Nearly every day, more people are being indicted for their involvement in the siege on the U.S. Capitol on January 6.

It was a sobering day for many who never thought they would witness something like that happen.

It was also a pivotal day for violent extremism, as the insurrection showed today’s greatest terrorism threat does not come from abroad, but rather from our fellow Americans.

“The public face of terrorism and how the public perceives terrorism has changed,” said Austin Barber, a graduate assistant at the University of Arkansas’ Terrorism Research Center, our country’s oldest terrorism research center.

Barber is currently working on a project called Dotcoms to Pipe Bombs, a research initiative that studies how online extremism manifests itself in our real world. On Nov. 3, the TRC received an $893,721 grant from the National Institute of Justice for the research project. It hopes to shed more light on how and why radical extremism exists in hopes we can better identify it and mitigate its harm.

“There’s been domestic terrorism in the United States for a very long time, but we’ve only started now, as a public, started to pick up on it,” said Barber.

In 2001, after 9/11, it may have been unheard of to think our greatest threat comes from our very own, but today, it is fact as the Center for Strategic and International Studies found white supremacists and like-minded extremists conducted two-thirds of terrorist plots and attacks in the United States in 2020.

“Around 2008, 2009, with the election of Barack Obama, with the great recession, we saw an increase in patriot groups and militia groups,” said Jeff Gruenewald, the director of the Terrorism Research Center.

Post 9/11, most of the TRC’s research looked at violent extremism and how it fueled terrorism, but since then, Osama Bin-Laden has been killed, and seven other top-ranking al-Qaeda leaders have been killed or captured as well.

It has shifted Gruenewald’s research to U.S. nationals as last year the U.S. Department of Homeland Security concluded that “racially and ethnically motivated violent extremists, specifically white supremacist extremists, will remain the most persistent and lethal threat in the homeland.”

“It was before the insurrection that we knew that there was violent potential on the far-right, but I think it more so brought it to the public’s attention,” said Gruenewald. “Yesterday, it was radical Islamic terrorism. Today, it’s extreme far-right, but we need to be collecting data and analyzing patterns for all movements.”

This is not to say foreign terror attacks do not exist. Al-Qaeda’s influence is as strong as ever. Today, there are four times as many jihadist terrorist groups designated as such by the U.S. State Department as there were on 9/11, but due to their disorganization and hyper-politicized nature of our country, experts believe the greatest threat comes from our very own.

“We are starting to understand that there’s a lot more to it than the one face value,” said Barber.

Alaska Airlines said they've banned 14 passengers after a fight broke out during a mid-air flight from DC to Seattle.

In an email to EW Scripps, an Alaska Airlines spokesperson said the incident happened Thursday on Alaska Flight 1085 from Washington Dulles International Airport.

The spokesperson added that several passengers were "non-mask compliant, rowdy, argumentative, and harassed our crew members," and the airline banned 14 of them.

"Their behavior was unacceptable," the spokesperson said in an email. "We apologize to our other guests who were made uncomfortable on the flight. We will not tolerate any disturbance onboard our aircraft or at any of the airports we serve."

The in-flight incident comes a day after a deadly riot erupted after Trump supporters stormed the US Capitol.

On Thursday, American Airlines told EW Scripps in an email that they had increased staffing at DC-area airports as a precautionary measure.

As Trump supporters prepared to fly home Thursday after Wednesday's violent riot, the Association of Flight Attendants (AFA) issued a statement suggesting that those who flew into DC and participated in the Capitol's breaching should be banned from flying.

AFA linked to a video that showed issues arising on an American Airlines flight from Dallas to DC in that same press release.

Alaska Airlines added that they had banned 302 passengers for violating their mask policy since it went into effect on Aug. 7.

NEW YORK (AP) — The manager for actor Chuck Norris says the "Walker, Texas Ranger" star was not present at last week's deadly riot at the Capitol in Washington.

A photo of a man resembling Norris apparently with a member of the mob began trending online.

USA Today reported that a Twitter user shared an Instagram story screenshot that was a Capitol rioter selfie with someone that looked like Norris.

According to USA Today, the tweet read, "Wait, so are we just not going to mention the fact that Chuck Norris was at the MAGA insurrection?"

But Norris manager Erik Kritzer tells The Associated Press on Tuesday the person in the photo is not Norris.

Kritzer acknowledged that the man photographed looked somewhat like Norris but said, "Chuck is much more handsome."

"Walker, Texas Ranger," in which Norris played karate-kicking lawman Cordell Walker, ran on CBS from 1993 to 2001.

In 2016, he announced his support for President Donald Trump.

A woman in Texas facing charges in connection with the riots at the U.S. Capitol has asked a federal judge for permission to vacation in Mexico.

According to court records, Jenny Cudd told the judge that the four-day trip this month is a "work-related bonding retreat" to Mexico's Riviera Maya from Feb. 18-21, USA Today reported.

According to court documents, Cudd, a small business owner from Midland, Texas, faces misdemeanor charges of knowingly entering a restricted building and disorderly conduct on Capitol grounds,

According to court documents, Cudd was arrested on Jan. 12 after federal agents caught wind of her posting statements on social media and boasting in a TV interview about being at the Capitol on Jan. 6.

She was released on her own recognizance, according to USA Today.

Cudd’s next court appearance is on Thursday and she's been ordered to stay away from nation's capital except for matters related to her case, the Seattle Times reported.

The judge has not issued a response to her request.

Federal authorities arrested a Chicago police officer on Friday for his alleged role in connection to the Jan. 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol.

Karol J. Chwiesiuk was arrested at his residence in Chicago, according to a criminal complaint.

He was charged with knowingly entering or remaining in any restricted building or grounds without lawful authority and violent entry and disorderly conduct on U.S. Capitol grounds.

According to Chicago Sun-Times, Chwiesiuk was released on a $15,000 unsecured bond on Friday after appearing before a U.S. Magistrate Judge in Chicago.

According to the complaint and accompanying photos, Chwiesiuk wore a sweatshirt with the Chicago Police Department logo while inside the Capitol.

The affidavit said geodata from his cell phone placed him inside the U.S. Capitol building on Jan. 6 between 2:37 p.m. and 3:24 p.m.

The newspaper reported that the police department stripped Chwiesiuk of his powers and assigned him to desk duty.
