The University of Cincinnati will be transitioning to online learning for the first two weeks of its spring semester due to the high transmissibility of the omicron variant in Greater Cincinnati.University officials announced Tuesday that UC will move to remote operations beginning on Wednesday and will continue online operations until Jan. 24, when they will pivot back to full in-person activities. Students will engage in online learning when their classes begin on Jan. 10. "I'm not surprised, but it's not the best thing in the world. I'm used to it at this point because my freshman year was completely online," said UC student Mikaela Armstrong.UC leaders said the decision was made in order to "minimize the disruption" the omicron variant could cause, including quarantining and classroom absences. Therefore, classes and academic support services will be held online for the first two weeks of the semester."The goal of this in-person delay is for us to assess the impact of omicron on our populations; let the spike in transmissions run its course; implement additional measures for screening testing and vaccination; and assess the feasibility of providing faculty, staff, and students the opportunity to receive booster shots," UC officials wrote in a release Tuesday.UC leaders said they wanted to ensure that students and staff come back to a healthy and safe environment."I am concerned about how much it's (COVID) spreading more. Especially in our community, we didn't see it that much especially on campus as students last year, but kinda looking forward to do that little bit of online to make sure it passes a little before we jump right back in," said UC student Aidan Guessford.Certain in-person activities that are allowed for learning purposes during this time include clinical, lab, studio and performance activities just as students and staff practice social distancing and proper health measures.UC said students can return to campus residence halls as scheduled but those volunteering to return must participate in required COVID-19 testing, regardless of vaccination status. Officials said they're updating guidance on COVID-19 testing requirements on its public health website in the coming days. The university is asking that other in-person campus activities such as welcome back events either be canceled, minimized or moved to a remote format.Schools officials are strongly encouraging students, staff and faculty members to get their COVID-19 booster shot as soon as possible. This move comes the same day that Northern Kentucky University announced it is delaying the start of its spring semester due to the recent surge in COVID-19 cases.Due to the surge, NKU will delay classes for one week. All classes will start on Tuesday, Jan. 18.Ohio reported more than 37,000 new COVID-19 cases over the weekend. There were 37,626 cases reported from New Year's Eve and New Year's Day.

"I'm going to the bowl game!" exclaimed Kevin Tatum at the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport on Thursday."I got two boys at home, the grandparents are watching them. So go UC! Hopefully, my boys will cheer for them on Friday. And all I'm doing is waiting for my wife, so we can go through to the game," Tatum said."We have high hopes," said Monica Wenstrup, wife of Congressman Brad Wenstrup, who we saw at the airport on their way to the game. Brad Wenstrup has been a long-time UC fan."I've been a season ticket holder since the late 80s," said Brad Wenstrup. For him and his wife, Monica, it's been a thrilling season."We knew every game had to be won. So you just stayed on the edge of your seat all season long," said Brad Wenstrup.Friday's bowl game is no different."We're the underdog. That's not a bad position to be in. We've got high hopes because this team has outperformed every time they've had to," Brad Wenstrup said.Tatum said he and his wife, Molly, knew they'd be packing their bags once the game was announced."I was immediately searching for tickets, searching for flights. And I cannot wait," Tatum said. "I'm a huge UC fan. My wife graduated from there. I'm married into the UC family and I cannot be more excited for the team and the community."UC students Ryan Sawyer and Claudia Wright said they're ecstatic Cincinnati's being put on a pedestal."Cincinnati, Ohio. No one thinks of Ohio whenever they think of football. So I think this is going to be cool especially with Ohio State and stuff. It's awesome that Cincinnati is getting some recognition," Wright said.As for game predictions? "UC by four," Tatum said."UC's gonna win. I think so," Wright said."UC's gonna win. What kind of question is that?! Come on!" Sawyer said. And, of course, the politically correct prediction: "We got a great team with a lot of talents. And obviously Alabama does too. So I don't want to make any predictions," said Brad Wenstrup.I guess we will all have to watch and see.

Every year, Mike Wilson decks out his home in Harrison, Ohio, for the Christmas season. But things on Abigail Court in the Parks of WhiteWater neighborhood look a bit different in 2021, as the University of Cincinnati Bearcats prepare for their biggest game in program history against Alabama in the Cotton Bowl. What is usually an array of Christmas colors is now a sea of red and black, as the Wilsons cheer on the Bearcats from afar. For the Wilsons, the light displays are a labor of love. "Sometimes I get frustrated with the amount of time it takes leading up to Thanksgiving when I'm trying to get everything done and he's working on the lights forever," Sarah Wilson said of her husband. "But it makes it all worth it in the end."Sarah Wilson said he's slightly obsessed. But this year, he scored a touchdown, and he's the talk of Bearcat Nation. "This year, they made history," said Mike Wilson, who describes himself as one of Cincinnati's biggest fans. "They're actually in the College Football Playoff — the first time ever Group of Five team — so why not celebrate as much as we can?"Like so many in Cincinnati, Mike Wilson has waited for this moment his whole life. "Finally, something is going right for Cincinnati fans. We're there. I don't want to say we made it because we expect more, but man we're there," he said.Mike Wilson said he decided to add a little Bearcat flair to the annual light show in 2021. His wife — who normally cheers for that other team — didn't know what to expect. "When he first told me, I kind of blew it off a little bit," Sarah Wilson said. "But then once he posted it and I saw it I was like, 'OK, that's actually really cool.'"When asked if his neighbors think the display is just slightly obnoxious, Mike Wilson laughed. "Well that wouldn't be me if I wasn't," he said. Now, his entire street is filled with Bearcat believers. The only thing they need now is a little red and black magic in Dallas. "I think there's a chance. I don't see why they can't shock the world and beat 'em," he said.

Cincinnati is energized around the UC Bearcats as they count the days to the Cotton Bowl in Texas. It's now just about nine days away.On Tuesday, there was an incredible show of support for the football team with a drone show and fireworks at Nippert Stadium. The excitement is also keeping businesses around campus booming.Fans chanted, clapped and rooted for the football Bearcats during the show.It was a phenomenal display in the sky that seemed to send a bit of a warning to Alabama: this team and its fans mean business."We have just been non-stop busy. Extended store hours. Tons of online orders," DuBois Book Store Operations Manager, Ty Bonawitz, said.Counting down the days to the Cotton Bowl and fans are getting geared up for the Bearcats at DuBois Book Store.Bonawitz said as soon as they put out new stuff, it's gone, and they have to restock again."The biggest problem we're having right now is the cotton shortage that we're dealing which is kind of ironic going to the Cotton Bowl," Bonawitz said.Even the dogs are rooting on these cats — well, the book store owner's dog — who wanders around as shoppers pick their next piece of gear.People said they're making a mad dash to get ready for Texas."Roll tide cool, but no, they ain't cool for us. We've got to beat them. We've got to beat them," fan, Jason Stewart, said.Fans have a hearty appetite to see undefeated UC conquer in this historic appearance in the College Football Playoffs.Over at Mio's, Rich Owens knows the team does, too. They fed them on Monday."We had a whiteboard that we had every player on the team sign and then we're going to laminate it. We haven't titled it yet. We're hoping to put national champs on it," Owens said. It's a moment in Bearcat history that will stick with the kids.As the sun went down on Tuesday, there was a bit of an incognito pep rally to "Light Up Nippert Stadium."There were fireworks and there was also a drone show with messages to root on the team."The programming that went into it and the messages up in the sky. They were really neat," fan, Kerri Todd, said.Of course, there were also the signature UC chants to let Alabama know UC means business."I was excited. I was actually up there and he can vouch for me, I was jumping up and down. I was like, 'Oh my God, I can't wait,'" UC employee, Alex Coleman, said.Fans said some people are driving to Texas and booking houses a couple of hours away so that they can still get close.Even still, businesses believe turnout locally will be good.According to officials, more than 150 synchronized drones were used in the show. They also said a video shot at the event will be featured at some point during the Cotton Bowl.

Bearcats fans are energized and ready to watch the team take on Alabama in Texas. It's a historic moment and fans said they've been waiting a long time. They said they are excited looking ahead to the Cotton Bowl. It's history in the making."We are going to cheer them on as hard as we can and it's so exciting," UC senior, Shannon Williams, said.UC students are fired up."I couldn't be more excited. It's been electric on campus and I'm ready to go to Dallas and see what we can do," UC senior, Nick Meinert, said.So are UC parents."Amazing. I'm so excited. I can't wait to see what they do. Go Bearcats," Debbie Conley said. They're all thrilled to seat the Bearcats not only undefeated, not only the AAC champs but number four in the College Football Playoff rankings. The team is set to take on Alabama in the Cotton Bowl on New Year's Eve.On Sunday, as the announcement echoed over the speakers in bars, people were elated with Bearcat pride. We even found former UC football Bearcat Jordan Roth beaming in the moment."We had the stars line up for us and not to mention, we took care of business with everybody giving us their best every single week and we're the last ones standing and the only undefeated football team in the country," he said. He's excited to see the showdown against Alabama in Texas and he knows this team is ready."Defense. They're going to have to go out. They're going to have to execute just like any time else out there, but I think our corners are the best in the game. I think our pass defense is going to be fantastic. I just think that hard edge style of play, man, we're going to bring it," Roth said.Fans were rowdy in the best way supporting the Bearcats and a fantastic win on Saturday night. Many people said they're already making travel plans to get to Dallas and do it all over again later this month for the hometown team.

<p>CINCINNATI — University of Cincinnati fans celebrated the Bearcats' perfect regular season Friday at local restaurants and bars.</p>
<p>“I’ve been a superfan! I grew up in Cincinnati, I’ve had season tickets since 2006, I don’t even remember the first game I went to — that’s how big of a superfan I am,” Joseph Kelly said.</p>
<p>Kelly, a junior at UC, watched the team play East Carolina with his friends on Short Vine — a staple for students and alumni.</p>
<p>“It’s awesome. I couldn’t have been in school at a better time," Kelly said.</p>
<p>A few East Carolina fans did sneak into the watch party — including Byron Walton's nephew.</p>
<p>"Hey, it's a holiday weekend," Walton said. "We have a lot of family in from out of town. It's so great to get everyone together."</p>
<p>Walton said the two have a nice rivalry, though his nephew admitted he was nervous to go to bar. While they are not on the field, fans felt the pressure for the Bearcats to complete a perfect regular season — especially with the College Football Playoff on the line.</p>
<p>"We came out of the gate slow," Walton said. "You can feel the anxiety, you can feel that weight, but once that settles...the team does what they do."</p>
<p>And what they did was win. Now, Bearcats fans are hoping the team wins the AAC championship Dec. 4 in hopes of becoming the first team outside of a Power Five conference to compete in the four-team playoffs.</p>
<p>"The OSUs, the Alabamas, they get this every year," Kelly said. "UC fans don't get this every year, so I think it's just awesome that we finally get to experience it. Hopefully, we can keep this rolling for years and years and years."</p>

<p>CINCINNATI — Two former University of Cincinnati men's soccer players have announced they are transferring to Northern Kentucky University less than a month after UC discontinued its program. </p>
<p>Former UC freshman midfielder <a class="Link" href="https://twitter.com/benheggee/status/1257353176929492999">Ben Hegge</a> (Moeller graduate) and former UC freshman forward <a class="Link" href="https://twitter.com/robinson_samm/status/1255928701478481921">Sam Robinson </a>(Talawanda) announced on Twitter their intentions to transfer to NKU and play for the men's soccer program.</p>
<p>"It's awesome," Hegge told WCPO. </p>
<p>Both players decided to transfer from UC after Athletic Director John Cunningham announced April 14 the men's soccer program was being discontinued immediately after a comprehensive review of the department's budget.</p>
<p>The UC men's soccer program was started in 1973 and the team had an all-time record of 385-408-84.</p>
<p>Hegge said it was a hectic experience the past few weeks especially with final exams going on, too. Hegge said he reached out to NKU and really believes in the coaching staff and their commitment to the program. He also considered the University of Dayton.</p>
<p>In the end, NKU proved to be the best fit. </p>
<p>"Selfishly, it's fantastic for the Welker family who went to the majority of his home games last year at UC," Welker told WCPO. "Mason and Levi (two of Welker's sons) love watching him play."</p>
<p>Welker couldn't overstate how significant of a loss the UC men's program would be for college recruiting in the Cincinnati area, but he said Monday he is very glad Hegge was able to land with the Norse.</p>
<p>"For Moeller this just continues another pathway and pipeline for our guys to continue to play high-level Division I soccer in front of their families here locally," Welker said. "We're so pumped for Ben and so happy he was able to land at a great location that plays a great style of soccer."</p>
<p>The Norse (7-10-1 in 2019) picked up two significant wins over 2019 Horizon League tournament champions Wright State and 2018 Horizon League tournament champions University of Illinois at Chicago. NKU is coached by Stu Riddle, who completed his third season with the Norse in 2019.</p>
<p>"I hope to reach out to Coach Riddle and get a game or two at NKU's stadium to hopefully provide even more exposure for Moeller guys in the future," Welker said.</p>

<p>NEW ORLEANS — Desmond Ridder twice connected with tight end Josh Whyle for touchdowns, and No. 2 Cincinnati remained unbeaten with a 31-12 victory Saturday over a struggling but feisty Tulane squad that kept the game competitive deep into the second half.</p>
<p>Jerome Ford rushed for 65 yards and a touchdown — his 14th this season — for Cincinnati (8-0, 4-0 American Athletic Conference), which briefly trailed in the second quarter and led by just two points at halftime.</p>
<p>Ridder passed for 227 yards and three touchdowns to go with his 47 yards rushing, but also was sacked in the end zone for a safety and intercepted. Whyle caught four passes for 79 yards.</p>
<p>Tulane (1-6, 0-4), which was playing without starting quarterback Michael Pratt because of his concussion during last weeks loss at SMU, lost its sixth straight, but did have a few standout performances.</p>
<p>Running back Tyjae Spears, coming back from a knee injury that wiped out his 2020 season, rushed for 106 yards on 19 carries, highlighted by his 47-yard touchdown in the first half.</p>
<p>Third-string QB Kai Horton, a freshman, started for Tulane because backup Justin Ibieta also was hurt. He completed seven of 16 passes for 79 yards. He was intercepted twice and sacked four times.</p>
<p>The Green Wave regularly employed direct snaps to running backs in hopes of easing the burden on Horton and also throwing off the Bearcats. While that didn’t produce a victory, it kept Cincinnati from putting the game out of reach until the fourth quarter.</p>
<p>After Cincinnati scored first on Ridder’s 16-yard touchdown pass to a wide-open Whyle, Tulane surprisingly surged into the lead in the second quarter with a series of successes that began with linebacker Marvin Moody wrapping up Ridder in the back of the end zone for a safety.</p>
<p>On the ensuing possession, Spears’ long TD run made it 9-7.</p>
<p>The Bearcats responded by driving 80 yards for a score in five plays, highlighted by Whyle’s 28-yard catch, Ridder’s 37-yard scramble and Ford’s 3-yard TD run in which he pushed through a pack of defenders.</p>
<p>Cincinnati looked primed to pull away when Evan Prater intercepted Horton’s screen pass in Tulane territory, but Macon Clark intercepted Ridder several plays later, returning it to midfield.</p>
<p>Soon after, Horton fumbled as he was sacked by Malik Vann, but the loose ball bounced up to 6-foot-4, 305-pound offensive lineman Rashad Green, who bowled his way forward for a 15-yard gain.</p>
<p>That set up Merek Glover’s 41-yard field goal to make it 14-12 at halftime.</p>

<p>CINCINNATI — The UC Bearcats football team released a statement Friday in solidarity with other sports teams and leagues protesting racial injustice.</p>
<p>In a statement posted to social media Friday, players said they "stand firm on the pillars of UC’s mission to enrich our university, city, state and global community."</p>
<p>"A melting pot of educated and engaged citizens, we cannot sit idly by as the direct plight and injustices of the Black community are routinely streamed, posted and publicized," the statement read. "Our hearts are heavy as we continue to process the most recent tragedies of Jacob Blake, Breonna Taylor, George Floyd and countless others."</p>
<p>Players also posted support for the Black Lives Matter movement.</p>
<p>"As student-athletes at the university, we stand in solidarity in the fight for racial equality and social justice," the statement continued. "We will continue to use our voices as advocates for positive change. This is bigger than us. This is bigger than sports.”</p>

<p>SHARONVILLE, Ohio — Princeton head football coach Mike Daniels will be the new director of on-campus recruiting for the Army West Point football program, he told WCPO Tuesday.</p>
<p>"To be able to go to an institution that is one of the finest in the world is special," Daniels said. "You're talking about a kid that grew up in the Lincoln Heights area. To be able to go and put myself in a situation, scenario like West Point is amazing. Talk about discipline, honor and just being leaders of the world; I'm very excited about that opportunity."</p>

<p>He expects to start his new position in early March.</p>
<p>Daniels, a former University of Cincinnati and Princeton High School football standout, coached the Vikings for four seasons after accepting the head coaching position in March 2017.</p>
<p>Princeton had a 6-2 overall record including 6-1 in the Greater Miami Conference during its last season. The Vikings were 6-5 in 2019, when they reached the postseason for the first time since 2007. </p>
<p>"We got it back to where Princeton is a great destination for premier student-athletes," Daniels said. "That's probably the thing I'm most proud of."</p>
<p>The GMC formed in 1966. Fifty-three years later, in 2019, Daniels became the first Black head coach to make the playoffs in the GMC, according to WCPO's Reggie Wilson.</p>
<p>Daniels, a 2003 Princeton graduate and member of the school's athletics hall of fame, said the high school will always be with him personally and professionally.</p>
<p>He said he enjoyed being able to engage the community and the tradition of Princeton athletics, and Princeton's next head coach will inherit a talented team.</p>
<p>"Whoever it is, it's going to be a team that is ready to go win now," Daniels said. "I'm very excited for whoever that is."</p>
<p>Princeton athletic director Joe Roberts told WCPO the school will begin its search for the next head coach immediately.</p>
<p>Daniels received national recognition for his coaching resume during his time at Princeton, where he instructed some high-profile college recruits.</p>
<p>He was named Football Scoop's <a class="Link" href="https://footballscoop.com/news/footballscoops-2020-21-minority-coaches-watch-list/">2020-21 Minority Coaches Watch List</a> in early December and participated in the 2020 NFL Bill Walsh Minority Coaching Fellowship with the Cincinnati Bengals last summer, among other internships in the NFL.</p>
<p>He also previously coached at UC, Kennesaw State and Buffalo prior to Princeton. He spent three seasons (2011-13) at Statesboro High School in Georgia.</p>
<p>It was at Kennesaw State where he connected with some coaching colleagues who are now on Army's staff.</p>
<p>Daniels said he's looking forward to enhancing Army's on-campus recruiting experience.</p>
<p>"I'm excited about the opportunity, I really am," he said.</p>
<p>As a football player, Daniels was a four-year letterwinner at UC (2003-07) where he was a triple threat as a wide receiver, running back and returner. </p>
<p>He served as the team captain and earned the Jim Kelly Spirit Award in 2007 under then-head coach Brian Kelly.</p>
<p>A 2013 Princeton Athletic Hall of Fame inductee, Daniels was named the 2002 Ohio Division I state offensive player of the year, according to Princeton.</p>

The desperate search continues in South Florida as 147 people remain missing in the condo collapse. One of the missing is a UC grad.Dr. Brad Cohen attended the UC College of Medicine from 1993-97. Cohen's dear friend, Mitchel Sutin, calls him a one-of-a-kind person."You don't meet many people in the world that have a manner which is mild yet very focused but very empathetic, and he was all those things," Sutin said.Cohen is an orthopedic surgeon that owns his own practice while also very involved in the North Miami Jewish community. After the collapse, Sutin sent Cohen a message."In the car I texted him, I said call me immediately, how are you? and he and I talk frequently and he's always very responsive," Sutin said.A text message still hasn't been returned.Sutin wants everyone in Greater Cincinnati to know how much brad cherished his time in the Midwest, and he talked about it often."I remember him telling me how he liked the chili in Cincinnati, because they're famous for that over spaghetti. He would tell me it was a great place to go to school, nice people, nice relaxed environment, and he learned a lot," Sutin said.He called him a brother and a people person who touches the lives of everyone he knows and helps."His general nature was someone who would go above and beyond his general nature is of someone who would do more, not just enough," Sutin said.A gofundme has been set up for the family during this time.
