The United States has been charging visitors for electronic travel authorization since 2009, and now the United Kingdom and the European Union are rolling out entry fees, too.Visa waiver schemes have been around for a while. The United States has the $21 ESTA, valid for two years, and Europe will be introducing the 7 euro ETIAS (about $7.50 on exchange rates this week) in 2024. That one will last you three years.The United Kingdom, you may recall, rather famously fled the EU coop a couple of years back. Now it’s revealed the price tag for its own scheme, the ETA (Electronic Travel Authorisation): £10 (about $12.50) for two years.Admittedly, that’s only about the price of a large fish and chips, but it does mean access to the nations that gave us the Tower of London and Edinburgh Castle will be more expensive than a pass to the home countries of the Eiffel Tower, the Coliseum, the Sagrada Familia and the Acropolis combined.The plan is for the scheme to be rolled out for people who don’t require a visa to enter the United Kingdom – including U.S. and EU nationals – by the end of 2024, with the first nation to join the scheme being Qatar later this year.

If you're traveling over the holidays, you know it's a stressful experience. From crowds to screenings, traffic and worries about boarding on time, an airport in Reno, Nevada, is hoping to soothe passengers.

A volunteer organization called Paws 4 Passengers brings certified therapy dogs into terminals to encourage smiles and change the overall mood.

"It's always stressful traveling. so seeing dogs here makes everybody feel good," Sheri Heimerdinger told KOLO as she waited to pick up her mother at the Reno-Tahoe International Airport.

Sheri Harwell of Paws 4 Passengers said the dogs help calm those who might be nervous about flying.

"They just bring warmth, love and joy to all the people here," she said.

Harwell said she's also seen the dogs seek out a belly rub from people they sense may need them the most.

"If we see a child that's really crying and upset and having a fit. We'll try to go over. That's what Brooke does. She'll go over there and just sit there with that little kid and calm them down," Harwell said. "The parents are always saying thank you, thank you, thank you."

Paws 4 Passengers was founded in 2013 and currently has a team of 30 therapy dogs.

And it's not just weary passengers who enjoy their visits with the dogs.

"When those vests go on, that's their job and they know it and they love coming here and just greeting people," Harwell said. "That's their job, that's what they love to do."

TORONTO (AP) — The Canadian government says that passengers must have a negative COVID-19 test taken within three days before they arrive in the country.

Intergovernmental Affairs Minister Dominic LeBlanc said Wednesday the measure will be implemented in the next few days.

According to public health minister Bill Blair, there will be more border officials at Canada’s ports of entry to ensure those arriving understand the new rules.

Canada already requires those entering the country to self-isolate for 14 days.

The decision came a day after the premier of Canada's largest province said he had ordered his finance minister to end a Caribbean vacation, saying he is "extremely disappointed" the official went abroad at a time the government is urging people to avoid nonessential travel because of the pandemic.

According to The Associated Press, Ontario's finance minister Rod Phillips resigned from his position Thursday after going on a vacation to the island of St. Barts during the pandemic and seemingly trying to hide the fact by sending social media posts showing him in a sweater before a fireplace.

The AP reported that Ontario Premier Doug Ford accepted Phillips’s resignation as minister hours after Phillips returned home.
