<p>Federal prosecutors allege a 24-year-old soldier enlisted in the military so he could become better at killing Black people.</p>
<p>CNN and Rolling Stone reported that the Department of Justice charged Killian M. Ryan on Aug. 26 with one count of knowingly making a false statement on his application for a secret security clearance.</p>
<p>An Army spokesperson confirmed to CNN that Ryan was discharged on the same day for "serious misconduct."</p>
<p>According to the news outlets, the Justice Department began investigating Ryan for lying on an official form. During their probe, they found that he allegedly engaged in violent and racist online activity.</p>
<p>Although his criminal charges are unrelated to his racist online communications, federal prosecutors detailed their findings in court documents, the media outlets reported.</p>
<p>According to the news outlets, during their investigation, the Justice Department found Instagram messages of Ryan detailing how he planned to use combat training to kill Black people.</p>
<p>The news outlets reported that Ryan is charged for lying on an application for security clearance.</p>
<p>According to court documents, the then-21-year-old said he had not seen his biological father in 10 years. Still, it was later discovered that they had been corresponding through Instagram, where they both allegedly engaged with accounts that “associated with racially motivated extremism," the media outlets reported.</p>

<p>Federal prosecutors announced earlier this week that an Ohio man pleaded guilty to attempting to conduct a mass shooting of women at Ohio State University.</p>
<p>The U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of Ohio said 22-year-old Tres Genco, of Hillsboro, pleaded guilty Tuesday to one count of attempting to commit a hate crime.</p>
<p>According to prosecutors, Genco, who identified as "Incel," which is short for involuntarily celibate, faces a life sentence because it involved an attempt to kill.</p>
<p>"The Incel movement is an online community of predominantly men who harbor anger towards women," prosecutors said in a news release. "Incels advocate violence in support of their belief that women unjustly deny them sexual or romantic attention to which they believe they are entitled."</p>
<p>Genco was arrested and charged last July after investigators found many writings that dated back to 2019, prosecutors said.</p>
<p>According to court documents, investigators found in these writings, one including a manifesto, where he wrote that he would “slaughter” women “out of hatred, jealousy, and revenge…” and referred to death as the “great equalizer," prosecutors said.</p>
<p>On the day he wrote the manifesto, prosecutors said Genco also searched for sororities and a university in Ohio online, according to court records.</p>
<p>According to court records, investigators found that Genco conducted surveillance at the school on Jan. 15, 2020, prosecutors said.</p>
<p>The Cincinnati Inquirer reported that he wanted to conduct the shooting at the Ohio State University.</p>
<p>“Genco formulated a plot to kill women and intended to carry it out. Our federal and local law enforcement partners stopped that from happening,” said U.S. Attorney Kenneth L. Parker said in a news release. “Hate has no place in our country – including gender-based hate – and we will continue to work with our law enforcement partners to vigorously prosecute any such conduct.”</p>

<p>
Citizens are fighting back against crime. Many filled a meeting in Evanston on Monday evening to learn about ways they can stop it from taking over their streets. Some said they are feeling empowered to start right now.People form different neighborhoods joined police and city leaders to learn about what to watch for and what to do."We just want to make sure we have an idea of what to do when somebody suspicious comes in the neighborhood," neighbor Greg Turner said. With more than 350 shootings and at least 79 homicides in Cincinnati, neighbors are ready to fight back against crime. That includes Turner, who came looking for ways to protect his wife and neighbors."We live in a nice, quiet neighborhood, but right down the street it gets a little noisy, and there are things that I see on the news that happen there," Turner said.City leaders and Cincinnati police helped a packed room of people in Evanston's Recreation Center figure out how they can start neighborhood watch groups in the face of rising crime.Police encouraged people to mobilize and work with officers and their neighbors."We're seeing a tremendous uptick in certain areas of the city where the violence is increasing. One of the ways we can best combat that is to partner with the community. Start a neighborhood block watch where there's a general feeling in a neighborhood of somebody's got my back," Capt. Danita Pettis said.Police told people to observe, take notes of people and cars, and call when serious or violent crimes happen. They also covered scams and home security. Now, neighbors are talking and plan to take action."We want our neighborhood to be safer and like I said, go back to the way that it was when we first moved there, and we want to make sure we have the tools to keep it that way," Turner said.Cincinnati police said it's important neighbors be informed, alert and prepared.Officers said the national average is about one officer for every 2,000 residents, but not all are patrolling the streets and may be assigned to other beats. They said neighborhood watches reconnect people and empower conversations.Cincinnati police said when issues arise, people can call the non-emergency line at 513-765-1212, or 911 in the event of an emergency.Officers said it's always important people remain calm and state what type of crime is occurring along with details about the location, people involved and any vehicles, and elaborate if it is a serious crime or attack.

<p>Some said they are feeling empowered to start right now.</p>
<p>People form different neighborhoods joined police and city leaders to learn about what to watch for and what to do.</p>
<p>"We just want to make sure we have an idea of what to do when somebody suspicious comes in the neighborhood," neighbor Greg Turner said.</p>
<p>With more than 350 shootings and at least 79 homicides in Cincinnati, neighbors are ready to fight back against crime.</p>
<p>That includes Turner, who came looking for ways to protect his wife and neighbors.</p>
<p>"We live in a nice, quiet neighborhood, but right down the street it gets a little noisy, and there are things that I see on the news that happen there," Turner said.</p>
<p>City leaders and Cincinnati police helped a packed room of people in Evanston's Recreation Center figure out how they can start neighborhood watch groups in the face of rising crime.</p>
<p>Police encouraged people to mobilize and work with officers and their neighbors.</p>
<p>"We're seeing a tremendous uptick in certain areas of the city where the violence is increasing. One of the ways we can best combat that is to partner with the community. Start a neighborhood block watch where there's a general feeling in a neighborhood of somebody's got my back," Capt. Danita Pettis said.</p>
<p>Police told people to observe, take notes of people and cars, and call when serious or violent crimes happen.</p>
<p>They also covered scams and home security.</p>
<p>Now, neighbors are talking and plan to take action.</p>
<p>"We want our neighborhood to be safer and like I said, go back to the way that it was when we first moved there, and we want to make sure we have the tools to keep it that way," Turner said.</p>
<p>Cincinnati police said it's important neighbors be informed, alert and prepared.</p>
<p>Officers said the national average is about one officer for every 2,000 residents, but not all are patrolling the streets and may be assigned to other beats.</p>
<p>They said neighborhood watches reconnect people and empower conversations.</p>
<p>Cincinnati police said when issues arise, people can call the non-emergency line at 513-765-1212, or 911 in the event of an emergency.</p>
<p>Officers said it's always important people remain calm and state what type of crime is occurring along with details about the location, people involved and any vehicles, and elaborate if it is a serious crime or attack.</p>

<p>For teachers and other educators, it has been a bumpy summer full of unknowns.</p>
<p>Used to delivering answers to students, they are now asking questions about what they can expect during the fall semester.</p>
<p>“It’s a lot of uncertainty,” said Jo Pustizzi, a high school teacher in Colorado Springs, Colorado.</p>
<p>The one thing Jo and her husband, Jim, who is also a public school teacher in Colorado Springs, can rely on is the source of income they have been generating from their Airbnb.</p>
<p>Seven years ago, the couple converted their cabin in the Rocky Mountains into a place to stay for out-of-towners looking to escape.</p>
<p>“Jo had to really convince me to do an Airbnb, because we had put so much work into the cabin that I didn’t want someone to abuse it,” Jim said.</p>
<p>Jo and Jim are far from the only ones as well. Airbnb says it has seen more teachers turn to the service as a way to supplement their income.</p>
<p>In 2019, Airbnb says teachers raked in $230 million through rentals. About $81 million of that came during the months of June, July and August, when they were not teaching.</p>
<p>It is a big jump from 2017, when teachers brought in $160 million, $54 million coming during the summer months.</p>
<p>“It’s kind of like our own little business, too, so it is fun,” said Jo. "It’s fun just reading reviews or talking to people on the phone.”</p>
<p>It gives the Pustizzis a way to live their lives a little more loosely as they near retirement age and worry about their pensions amid the pandemic.</p>
<p>It also gives them a chance to look back on reviews knowing they did what they do best: share information and experiences.</p>
<p>"People enjoy the same things that we enjoy and it’s cool,” said Jim.</p>
<p>“It feels good knowing other people are feeling good,” added Jo.</p>
<p>For a couple whose profession and passion is in flux, what more could you ask for?</p>

A Silverton dad said he spent hours on Wednesday in search of a COVID-19 test for a child, but he said it was no easy task.He said many places were busy, with lines, and some had no appointments.Derek Drifmeyer said he offered to help a friend whose 11-year-old daughter was feeling pretty lousy.Little did he know, it would turn into an hours-long trip for a test."I felt bad for her. We're driving all over town trying to find a place to get a test and she's sick, just wants to be at home resting," Drifmeyer said.He said finding a COVID-19 test for his friend's daughter took more than four hours, starting at about 10 a.m."Went to Walgreens to buy a test. Found out that they were sold out of the take-home tests. Tried to schedule a test with CVS. Every location I tried, it was booked up. Same with Walgreens," Drifmeyer said. After trying an urgent care, where people were waiting in line for a test, Drifmeyer said they were eventually able to get a test at her primary care provider in a garage. The Ohio Department of Health said it is expanding testing as demand soars."We also continue to see rising numbers of Ohioans tested for COVID-19 and increasing positivity rates now hovering at a seven-day average 13.3 percent. Testing is an important strategy to help mitigate the spread of COVID-19. If you're concerned that you might have COVID there are many options for testing," Ohio Chief Medical Officer Dr. Bruce Vanderhoff said. "In addition to being able to get a test at many pharmacies and community providers, we've also partnered with many of our libraries and local health departments, where you can pick up a free, rapid BinaxNOW test, which can be administered from the comfort of your home with the help of a telehealth provider."Vanderhoff said demand for testing is high, so he urged everyone to make sure a test is available by searching a map on the Ohio Coronavirus website to find a provider. At the same time, officials warn that emergency rooms are not for routine testing."We need to be able to provide our community with the very best, efficient and quick care for acute conditions," Premier Health System Chief Medical Officer Dr. Marc Belcastro said.Drifmeyer said the entire COVID-19 situation is frustrating. He said people should wear masks, get vaccinated if they can and keep trying for a test."We were doing well with COVID the numbers were down and people got pretty lax and now they're shooting back up," Drifmeyer said.He also said he recovered from a breakthrough case himself about a month or so ago.Walgreens did not respond to our request for comment.CVS Health told us testing has been in high demand, but stores have been able to keep up with it in most locations.A spokesman told us people can purchase at-home COVID-19 tests over the counter, limited to six per person, or they can be purchased online and delivered to their door in 24 to 48 hours.CVS Health provided this statement to WLWT:"Daily COVID-19 testing volume is currently running ahead of average daily volume year-to-date, and significantly ahead of average daily volume in the second quarter. COVID-19 home test kits are the top-selling item in our stores. We continue to be able to meet the demand for COVID-19 testing in most locations, even with increasing numbers of patients seeking out tests at one of our nearly 5,000 CVS Pharmacy locations across the country offering testing with same day and future day appointments in most geographies. Patients are encouraged to schedule an appointment on CVS.com or the CVS Pharmacy app, where they have the option to seek either a rapid COVID-19 test, with results available within hours, or a COVID-19 test at the pharmacy drive-thru windows. The self-swab collected at the CVS Pharmacy drive-thru window is processed by an independent, third-party lab and those results are generally available within 1-2 days."CVS Health said it has also established a new partnership to expand the availability of at-home COVID-19 testing kits in 7,000 of its stores as of last week.According to CVS Health, it is partnering with Quidel Corporation to make its "non-prescription QuickVue® At-Home OTC COVID-19 Test" available at thousands of locations across the United States and online.CVS said the packages contain two self-administered rapid antigen tests.

<p>
On the fifth anniversary of the Pike County murders, a status hearing in Pike County Court turned into a surprise plea deal in the killings.Eight members of the Rhoden family were brutally murdered in what Gov. Mike DeWine called the biggest case in Ohio's Bureau of Criminal Investigation history. The youngest charged, Jake Wagner, agreed to a plea deal to avoid the death penalty.DeWine stood alongside family members of those who were killed and teared up talking with us about the emotions of this day."Five years ago, today, I was here, we met with family members in the church and I committed to them that we would find who did this and that we would bring them to justice. There was a lot of justice done today," DeWine said.On the five-year anniversary of the Pike County murders, an emotional DeWine stood outside the Pike County Courthouse.Thursday brought a victory in a case he'd held close to the heart since he was Ohio's attorney general.Wagner agreed to a deal, pleading guilty to 23 counts including eight counts of aggravated murder for the killings of eight members of the Rhoden family in 2016.They were shot execution-style at four homes."That removes the sentence of death from, as a possible sentence, that will not be possible, at that point, to impose a possible death sentence. Do you understand that?" the judge said."I do, your honor," Wagner said.Prosecutors said there was a growing custody dispute between Wagner and Hannah Rhoden over their daughter. They outlined meticulous planning by Jake Wagner, Angela Wagner, George "Billy" Wagner and George Wagner IV, including buying phone jammers and hacking Facebook accounts, forging custody documents and building silencers for guns.Jake Wagner apologized in court. His attorneys said he knows he will die in prison."Family's been through hell. While today, I'm sure was a very gratifying day, it couldn't have been an easy day. They've got to be leaving here just totally exhausted and, you know, emotionally spent. But these are tough people, these are strong people," DeWine said.Prosecutors said Jake Wagner clearly implicated the other Wagners in his statements. They also said he led them to weapons and vehicles used in the killings. In addition to a series of life sentences, Jake Wagner could also owe hundreds of thousands of dollars in fines.Prosecutors said Jake Wagner's deal also includes an agreement that will allow Angela Wagner, George "Billy" Wagner, and George Wagner IV to avoid the death penalty, but that means Jake Wagner will have to testify in each of their trials.

<p>"Five years ago, today, I was here, we met with family members in the church and I committed to them that we would find who did this and that we would bring them to justice. There was a lot of justice done today," DeWine said.</p>
<p>On the five-year anniversary of the Pike County murders, an emotional DeWine stood outside the Pike County Courthouse.</p>
<p>Thursday brought a victory in a case he'd held close to the heart since he was Ohio's attorney general.</p>
<p>Wagner agreed to a deal, pleading guilty to 23 counts including eight counts of aggravated murder for the killings of eight members of the Rhoden family in 2016.</p>
<p>They were shot execution-style at four homes.</p>
<p>"That removes the sentence of death from, as a possible sentence, that will not be possible, at that point, to impose a possible death sentence. Do you understand that?" the judge said.</p>
<p>"I do, your honor," Wagner said.</p>
<p>Prosecutors said there was a growing custody dispute between Wagner and Hannah Rhoden over their daughter.</p>
<p>They outlined meticulous planning by Jake Wagner, Angela Wagner, George "Billy" Wagner and George Wagner IV, including buying phone jammers and hacking Facebook accounts, forging custody documents and building silencers for guns.</p>
<p>Jake Wagner apologized in court.</p>
<p>His attorneys said he knows he will die in prison.</p>
<p>"Family's been through hell. While today, I'm sure was a very gratifying day, it couldn't have been an easy day. They've got to be leaving here just totally exhausted and, you know, emotionally spent. But these are tough people, these are strong people," DeWine said.</p>
<p>Prosecutors said Jake Wagner clearly implicated the other Wagners in his statements.</p>
<p>They also said he led them to weapons and vehicles used in the killings.</p>
<p>In addition to a series of life sentences, Jake Wagner could also owe hundreds of thousands of dollars in fines.</p>
<p>Prosecutors said Jake Wagner's deal also includes an agreement that will allow Angela Wagner, George "Billy" Wagner, and George Wagner IV to avoid the death penalty, but that means Jake Wagner will have to testify in each of their trials.</p>
