<p>WASHINGTON — The reality is political violence is a real threat facing our country.</p>
<p>The Department of Homeland Security has issued bulletins and so has the FBI. Examples have even emerged in recent weeks of the threats officials of both political parties are facing. </p>
<p>This summer, after the Supreme Court decision on abortion, a man was arrested with a gun and charged with attempting to kill Justice Brett Kavanaugh near the justice's home. </p>
<p>In July, Congressman Lee Zeldin (R-NY) was attacked by a man at a political rally. </p>
<p>This past week, Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal <a class="Link" href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2022/09/08/congress-pramila-jayapal-threats-stalking/">revealed to the Washington Post</a> that an armed man yelled outside her home in Seattle for over an hour. </p>
<p>Also, there was the FBI raid at former President Donald Trump's residence at Mar-a-lago, and the FBI office in Cincinnati was attacked by a Navy veteran, who police say had extremist ties.</p>
<p>On Capitol Hill in 2017, there were around 3,900 threats against members of Congress, according to Capitol Police records. </p>
<p>Last year, there were over 9,600.</p>
<p><b>OPENING UP </b></p>
<p>One Member of Congress has been especially forthcoming about the threats he is facing. Congressman Adam Kinzinger (R-IL), one of only two Republicans on the January 6th committee, posted on Twitter audio of some of the threatening voicemails his office has received.</p>
<p>"I pray that it be God's will that you suffer," one caller said. </p>
<p>"We know where you live," another called threatened. </p>
<div class="TweetEmbed">
<blockquote class="twitter-tweet">
<p lang="en" dir="ltr">Threats of violence over politics has increased heavily in the last few years. But the darkness has reached new lows. My new interns made this compilation of recent calls they’ve received while serving in my DC office.</p>
<p>WARNING: this video contains foul &amp; graphic language. <a href="https://t.co/yQJvvAHBVV">pic.twitter.com/yQJvvAHBVV</a></p>
<p>— Adam Kinzinger (@RepKinzinger) <a href="https://twitter.com/RepKinzinger/status/1544327335830327301?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">July 5, 2022</a></p></blockquote>
</div>
<p><b>INCREASED SECURITY </b></p>
<p>Those threats, as well as others, have resulted in taxpayers footing the bill for more security for members of Congress. Typically, only those in senior leadership positions, like the Speaker of the House or the minority leader, are given protection.</p>
<p>In recent weeks, security officials at the capitol have approved $10,000 worth of security upgrades for the homes of members of Congress to pay for things like new alarms, doors or lighting.</p>
<p><b>ISSUE FOR VOTERS </b></p>
<p>Voters are beginning to take these threats seriously and some recent polls are showing the threat of political violence driving some voters this election.</p>
<p><a class="Link" href="https://www.cbsnews.com/news/political-violence-opinion-poll-2022-09-05/">In fact, a CBS/Yougov poll from late August</a> shows that 64% of Americans believe political violence will increase from here.</p>
<p>In January of 2021, after the January 6th attack, only 51% of Americans thought that. </p>
<p><a class="Link" href="https://www.nbcnews.com/meet-the-press/first-read/nbc-news-survey-finds-2022-midterms-entered-uncharted-territory-rcna44172">A recent NBC poll identified the threat of political violence</a> as a driving force among voters this election. </p>

					The FBI said on Thursday it had received credible information about a "broad" threat to synagogues in New Jersey.The FBI's Newark office released a statement urging synagogues to "take all security precautions to protect your community and facility."The alert was posted after officials discovered an online threat directed broadly at synagogues in New Jersey, a law enforcement official said. The posting, though, did not target any specific synagogue by name, the official said. The official could not discuss details of the investigation publicly and spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity.More specific details weren't released, and a message was left with the FBI in Newark.In Jersey City, Mayor Steven Fulop said police would be posted at the city's seven synagogues and foot patrols would be added in the broader Jewish community. In 2019, two assailants motivated by anti-Jewish hate killed three people in a kosher market in Jersey City, along with a police officer.Police officers armed with rifles guarded a synagogue one city over, in Hoboken, where the public safety director also announced increased patrols in Jewish communities.Five years ago, two New Jersey men were sentenced to 35 years in prison after being convicted for a series of attacks in 2012 that included the firebombings of two synagogues. They also threw a Molotov cocktail into the home of a rabbi as he slept with his wife and children.Democratic Rep. Josh Gottheimer, whose district encompasses part of the area in northern New Jersey affected by those attacks, said in a statement Thursday that recent comments by Kanye West and the social media post shared by NBA star Kyrie Irving have contributed to the problem."I am deeply concerned and outraged by today's alert from the FBI," Gottheimer said. "This is what happens after years of antisemitic comments from public figures, including, most recently, Kanye West, Kyrie Irving, and others," he said.___Associated Press writer Michael Balsamo in Washington contributed to this report.

											TODAY NEW DETAILS THIS MORNING AFTER A SHOOTING NEAR A HOME TIED TO A BENGALS PLAYER. RICHARD CHILES IS LIVE WITH WHAT POLICE KNOW SO FAR. PLUS THE FUTURE OF TICK TOCK IS UP IN THE AIR AS A GROUP OF LAWMAKERS FROM BOTH PARTIES INTRODUCE A BILL TO BAN IT. WELL, GRAB YOUR WINTER COATS, SEND SOME FREEZING STARTED MANY COMMUNITIES AS WE’RE SETTLING INTO SOME COOL MARCH AIR. WHEN THE RAIN RETURNS AND THE CHANCE TO SEE SOME SNOW THIS WEEKEND. THIS IS WLWT NEWS 5 TODAY LEADING THE WAY. WELL, THAT COOLDOWN CONTINUES. AND YES, WE’RE TALKING ABOUT THE CHANCES FOR THE FOUR LETTER S-WORD. SNOW ONCE AGAIN THIS WEEK. THANKS FOR BEING WITH US, ASHLEY KIRKLEN. AND I’M KELLY RIPPON. SO IT’S A GOOD DAY TO HAVE THOSE EXTRA LAYERS IF YOU’RE GOING TO BE OUTSIDE. NOTHING TOO CRAZY, BUT IT IS COLD. SO LET’S CHECK IN WITH WLWT. METEOROLOGIST RANDI RICO ON WHEN WE COULD SEE THOSE. I’M GOING TO GO WITH FLURRIES. I JUST FEEL LIKE I LIKE THAT SNOW. OH, THAT’S LIKE TOO MUCH, RIGHT? YEAH, IT’S AGGRESSIVE. YEAH, ESPECIALLY AFTER WE’VE BEEN IN THE SEVENTIES MULTIPLE TIMES. SO BY THE TIME WE GET TO THE WEEKEND, YOU THINK IT’S COLD NOW? TEMPERATURES TAKE A STEP BACK, KIND OF SETTING THE STAGE FOR THE POTENTIAL TO SEE SOME FLURRIES AND SNOW SHOWERS AS WE TRANSITION OUT OF THE WEEKEND AND INTO NEXT WEEK. NOW, RIGHT NOW, IT’S ALL DRY. IT’S COLD, RIGHT? IT’S RIGHT AROUND FREEZING RIGHT NOW, IT’S 32 DEGREES IN CINCINNATI. FLORENCE, INDEPENDENCE OF THE TAVIA, 29 IN HAMILTON, 28 RIGHT NOW IN SPRING BOROUGH. SO A COLD START. CLOUDS WILL BE MOVING IN HERE OVER THE NEXT FEW HOURS, BUT THIS MORNING, JUST THE LIGHTEST BREEZE AND IT FEELS LIKE THE MID AND LOW TWENTIES. SO YOUR CURRENT WIND CHILL IN CINCINNATI RIGHT NOW AT 25 AS WE GO THROUGH THE DAY. PLANNED ON TEMPERATURES TOPPING OUT PROBABLY IN THE UPPER 40 OR SO JUST A COUPLE OF DEGREES COOLER THAN YESTERDAY. BUT BECAUSE WE HAVE MORE CLOUDS AROUND, IT’S GOING TO SEEM A BIT CHILLIER THAN WHAT WE HAD YESTERDAY. RIGHT NOW, 32 FEELING LIKE 22 BY LUNCHTIME WILL BE AT 41 AND UPPER FORTIES TODAY. BUT THE TEMPERATURES TAKE A STEP BACK BY THE WEEKEND. I’M TRACKING THE TIMELINE FOR THE RAIN THAT BRINGS IN SOME COOLER AIR AND WHEN WE WILL BE TRACKING SOME SNOW SHOWERS ON THE RADAR COMING UP KELLY. ALL RIGHT. REALLY THANK YOU. DEVELOPING ON WLWT, LEARNING MORE AFTER AN ANDERSON TOWNSHIP TEENAGER WAS HURT AS NEIGHBORS SAY A GAME OF NERF WARS LED TO REAL GUNSHOTS FIRED. YEAH, OFFICIALS ARE NOW TELLING US THAT THE TEEN IS A STUDENT AT ANDERSON HIGH SCHOOL AND WLWT NEWS 5 RICHARD CHILES LIVE THIS MORNING WITH THE LATEST DEVELOPMENTS AS INVESTIGATORS SHARE A LITTLE MORE INFORMATION. GOOD MORNING, RICHARD. GOOD MORNING. STILL WORKING TO FIND OUT WHO MAY HAVE FIRED THAT SHOT AND THE EXTENT OF THE TEEN’S INJURIES. BUT WHAT WE’RE LEARNING AT THIS TIME, TEEN WAS ACTUALLY INVOLVED IN A GAME CALLED NERF WARS. AND I UNDERSTAND SHOTS FIRED. WE DO UNDERSTAND FROM TALKING WITH FOLKS IN ANDERSON HIGH SCHOOL, THIS TEAM WAS A STUDENT AT THAT SCHOOL. NOW, THE HAMILTON COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE CONTINUING THEIR INVESTIGATION TO THAT SHOOTING TAKING PLACE ON MONDAY. WHEN DEPUTIES RESPONDED TO THE CALL OF SHOTS FIRED. SHERIFF’S SAYS ONE TEENAGER WAS INJURED BUT HAVE NOT CONFIRMED WHETHER OR NOT THAT TEEN WAS SHOT OR HURT. AND SOME OF THE WAY NEIGHBORS TELL US SEVERAL TEENS WERE PLAYING A GAME CALLED NERF WARS INVOLVING TOY GUNS. WHEN MOMENTS LATER THEY HEARD REAL GUNSHOTS. TWO FIRE ROUNDS IN THE DARK AT TEENAGERS THAT ARE PLAYING A GAME IS VERY SCARY. AND IT MAKES YOU REALLY REEVALUATE. IF YOU WOULD WANT YOUR CHILD TO PLAY IN THESE NERF WARS. I GUESS. NOW THAT’S WHEN DEPUTIES ARRIVED TAPING OFF PARTS OF BENGALS RUNNING BACK JOE MIXON HOME AND EXECUTING A SEARCH WARRANT. LAST NIGHT. THE FORCE HILL SCHOOL DISTRICT CONFIRMING TO WLWT’S THAT THE PERSON INJURED WAS A STUDENT AT ANDERSON HIGH SCHOOL. IN A STATEMENT, SCHOOL ADMINISTRATORS SAID THE DISTRICT HAS BEEN IN CONTACT WITH THE HAMILTON COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE REGARDING THEIR INVESTIGATION INTO THE INCIDENT WHICH HAPPENED AFTER SCHOOL HOURS AND OFF SCHOOL PROPERTY. ANDERSON HIGH SCHOOL PRINCIPAL SAYS THE STUDENT IS RECOVERING AT HOME NOW. SO FAR, WE HAVE NOT RECEIVED ADDITIONAL INFORMATION FROM THE SHERIFF’S OFFICE IN REGARDS TO WHO MAY HAVE FIRED THE SHOT OR, AGAIN, HOW THAT TEEN WAS INJURED, WHETHER OR NOT IN THE INDIVIDUAL HAS IN CUSTODY OR WHETHER OR NOT ANY CHARGES WILL BE EXPECTED. REPORTING LIVE THIS MORNING, RICHARD CHILES WW T NEWS 5. ALL RIGHT. MORE QUESTIONS THIS MORNING ABOUT THE DEATH OF A NEWBORN BABY IN NORTHERN KENTUCKY WHO WAS FOUND ALONE INSIDE AN EMPTY HOME LAST WEEK. FALMOUTH POLICE WERE CALLED TO MOUNTJOY STREET FOR A REPORT OF AN ABANDONED NEWBORN WHEN OFFICERS ARRIVED IN TIME. THEY SAY THE HOUSE WAS VACANT AND THE BABY WAS UNRESPONSIVE AND NOT BREATHING. THE BABY WAS RUSHED TO HARRISON MEMORIAL HOSPITAL, WHERE THE NEWBORN LATER DIED. POLICE ARE LOOKING TO INVESTIGATE THE CIRCUMSTANCES SURROUNDING THE BABY’S BIRTH AND DEATH, AS WELL AS WHO THE BABY’S FAMILY IS. AN OHIO DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCE OFFICER IS IN JAIL, ACCUSED OF SHOOTING BOTH OF HIS PARENTS. 911 CALLS REVEAL IT STARTED WITH AUSTIN SNIDER’S PARENTS TELLING POLICE HE WAS DRUNK AND TRYING TO BREAK INTO THE HOUSE. THE DISPATCH DISPATCH ASKS IF HE HAS ACCESS TO A GUN. THE SNYDERS TOLD THEM HE IS AN ODIN, OUR OFFICER, AND THE CALLS RECORDED THE MOMENT POLICE SAY SNYDER SHOT HIS PARENTS. POLICE TOOK HIM INTO CUSTODY WITHOUT ANY MORE VIOLENCE. BUT NEIGHBORS CALLED THE INCIDENT UNSETTLING. I’M A LITTLE BIT UPSET AND A LITTLE BIT NERVOUS. I’M NOT LIKE, SCARED SCARED BECAUSE I KNOW IT WAS PROBABLY AN ODD THING, BUT I’M JUST WORRIED THAT HE’LL GET LIKE SIX MONTHS OR SOMETHING AND COME BACK AND LIVE ON THE STREET. SNYDER RIGHT NOW, BEING HELD IN THE CLAREMONT COUNTY JAIL AND FACING TWO COUNTS OF FELONIOUS ASSAULT, BOT

					St. Bernard and Elmwood Place school district officials have announced an increased police presence at their schools after two students were accosted by a male Tuesday. Superintendent Mimi R. Webb announced that police will have a visible presence in and around all of the St. Bernard-Elmwood Place school buildings. "As always, the safety of students and staff is our top priority," she wrote in a statement. On Tuesday evening, two female students were walking home when they were stopped by a man on the street. Later, an unidentified voice message indicated that this man threatened to come to the school Wednesday. Administration, staff, and law enforcement are said to be keeping an eye out for suspicious behavior. Anyone with information on the incident is asked to contact the school office at 513-482-7121. Additional questions can be directed to your school's principal.

<p>The National Butterfly Center in McAllen, Texas, announced it is closing its doors for the immediate future due to receiving threats.</p>
<p>On Wednesday, the center said the North American Butterfly Association board of directors decided to close "in the wake of recent events" targeting them.</p>
<p>"The safety of our staff &amp; visitors is our primary concern," <a class="Link" href="https://twitter.com/NatButterflies/status/1488902023135301645">said Dr. Jeffrey Glassberg</a>, president and founder of the North American Butterfly Association. "We look forward to reopening soon when the authorities and professionals who are helping us navigate this situation give us the green light."</p>
<p>The <a class="Link" href="https://mailchi.mp/nationalbutterflycenter/v4jla7bmp9-5505325?e=15f8f8f2a5">center</a> first closed for three days last week due to receiving an onslaught of threats from a former state official and the We Stand America event.</p>
<p>The <a class="Link" href="https://apnews.com/75f46de1e489c978deaa93cad02ba9a5">Associated Press</a> reported that the center has dealt with harassment in recent years after waging legal challenges against the Trump administration over the use of the center's land to build a wall between Mexico and the U.S.</p>

<p>
					A teacher at an Iowa high school is under arrest accused of leaving a series of threatening notes around school referencing gun violence. Local police said an investigation into a series of anonymous handwritten notes led them to Abraham Lincoln High School teacher Katrina Phelan, 37. Police said all the notes referenced committing gun violence on school property and were found in Phelan's classroom or by Phelan herself. According to police in an affidavit, all four notes in question were either found and recovered by students in Phelan's classroom or by Phelan herself.The affidavit says Phelan admitted to writing the notes and said they were written on paper from her classroom. Police said she confirmed the handwriting on the note was hers, but couldn't recall writing them. The affidavit also states that when asked why she was writing these notes, Phelan responded by saying "it was out of concern, worry and frustration over the lack of control of her classroom."When asked what she hoped to accomplish by writing these notes, investigators said Phelan told them maybe to bring attention to the fact that it's "not a safe place."Investigators said they determined Phelane had no intentions or means of carrying out the threats. They describe one note posing as an unnamed student who said they were tired of being made fun of. Phelan faces charges of Threats of Terrorism. The three counts are Class D felonies, punishable by up to 5 years in prison. The following email was sent to ALHS parents: The Council Bluffs Police Department has concluded its investigation into the threatening notes found at school a few weeks ago. They have determined the source of the notes to be a school employee. Investigators concluded there was no intent or means to carry out the threats. However, the employee has been charged with a crime, has voluntarily surrendered to the police, and will no longer be employed by the Council Bluffs Schools. We appreciate the detectives and their diligence in solving this crime.During that investigation, students provided us with information that was helpful. This is what we expect from students at ALHS.We want all students, parents and staff members to have confidence that our schools are safe and supportive environments.Mrs. Bellows, Principal

<p>FORT MITCHELL, Ky. — Mike Wong met some new customers Friday at his restaurant, Oriental Wok on Buttermilk Pike, when he and his staff served a packed house. The surge in customers, many said, was meant as an act of support for the business after it received a series of anti-Asian threats.</p>
<p>"This is one or two people," Wong told WCPO. "Totally, the community will support me."</p>
<p>Local police camped outside the restaurant much of the day Thursday after Wong reported a series of threatening messages aimed at his staff in the aftermath of Tuesday's Atlanta-area mass shootings that left eight people dead, the majority of whom were of Asian descent.</p>
<figure class="Figure" itemscope="" itemtype="https://schema.org/ImageObject">
<div class="Figure-container">
<p>Rob Pieper (WCPO)</p>
</div><figcaption class="Figure-caption" itemprop="caption">Mike Wong, speaking with WCPO on March 19, 2021, owns Oriental Wok on Buttermilk Pike in Fort Mitchell, Ky. His family has owned and operated multiple restaurant locations since the 1970s.</figcaption></figure>
<p>The shooting renewed focus on what has been a measurable increase in anti-Asian and anti-Pacific Islander rhetoric and aggression over the last year. What was already a pervasive problem, local leaders say, has been made worse throughout the course of the COVID-19 pandemic.</p>
<p>"I think it's horrible," said first-time customer, Judy Cosset. "It's just a horrible thing that these people had to deal with because of what going on with the virus. We literally read what was going on and felt like we needed to come and support the organization and the community."</p>
<p>The restaurant posted a message on Facebook Thursday explaining why police were called to their premises and how hateful threats are nothing new.</p>
<p>"Our homes and cars have been egged, we are pummeled with daily calls telling us to 'go back to China' along with other crude and violent threats. We walk our staff to their cars to ensure safety every night," the statement reads.</p>
<p>"It breaks my heart because nobody deserves..." said another customer, Amy Bostic. "Hate, to me, is just ignorance, and these people definitely do not deserve it. They've done nothing wrong."</p>
<p>Cosset said part of her motivation to visit the restaurant Friday evening was to send a message that the threats they've received do not align with her community's values.</p>
<p>"That's just not the way that we think," she said. "That's not the way that we feel, and we wanted them to know that."</p>
<p>Wong said the response from the community was overwhelming.</p>
<p>"We love all the people, the country," he said.</p>
