At least two teens were shot in Cincinnati during the weekend.It's been a record year for Hamilton County Juvenile Court for all the wrong reasons and advocates hope to curb the violence.Investigators said one of the most recent gun violence victims was set to have surgery on Monday.They said he is just 15 years old and his mother was on the scene after he was shot.It's another case of a child touched by gun violence in our city."We've just got to get to the bottom of these shootings, man. Everybody be living in a peaceful way, it'd be a wonderful thing," said Mitchell Morris with the Cincinnati Works Phoenix Program.Community advocates said there are too many shootings with kids caught in the mix.Morris is saddened to see at least two more cases just this weekend."Please put them guns down. It's a better way. Whatever the disagreement is, whatever you're going through, disrespect thing, please let's talk to somebody," he said.On Saturday at about 9 p.m., Cincinnati police said two people were shooting at each other on Baymiller Street in the West End when a 17-year-old boy was hit.Investigators said he went to the hospital and is expected to be OK.Then, on Sunday night at about 10 p.m., Cincinnati police said a 15-year-old boy was shot near Montgomery Road and Rutland Avenue in Evanston.Police said he was stabilized at UC Medical Center and set to have surgery on Monday.As we first told you a few months ago, Hamilton County Juvenile Court officials said it's been a record year for the wrong reasons.They said 77 kids are in The Youth Center, with 80% of them charged with an offense involving a gun.Twenty-four are charged with felonious assault and 15 are charged with murder, officials told WLWT.Court officials said some face multiple counts.They said in total there have been 35 counts of murder and 39 counts of felonious assault filed this year.This year, Hamilton County Juvenile Court has launched a new assessment center to help get teens on the right track.Morris hopes more people will drop the guns and help the community instead."You had a group of people down in the West End passing out bikes to little kids and same thing in Walnut Hills, Avondale, you got groups of people doing wonderful work, there's lot of wonderful work being done," he said.Cincinnati police said they have no updates on how the 15-year-old boy is doing.Police said in that shooting, they are looking for two men wearing all black.They said they have no information about what led up to the gunfire but said there is surveillance video from the city's Real-Time Crime Camera Network.

A customer at The Omaha Bakery in Nebraska ordered two turnovers, and in return put forth a huge tip. "Everybody was freaking out in here, they were like 'you guys won't believe what just happened!'" employee Preston Rath said.Rath thought he was doing a typical transaction at the bakery."He ordered two turnovers which came to $5 and as I'm ringing them up he kind of snickers a little bit as he turns the screen back to me," Rath said.When the customer, Nicholas, turned the screen around, Rath noticed his $2,000 tip. "And I was like that's wrong, you put too much of a tip in there. And he goes 'if you don't hit OK, I'm going to reach around and hit OK,'" Rath said."You hear about these things in big cities and you see it on the internet, but you never think it's going to happen at your business," owner Michelle Kaiser said.Kaiser said the money will be dispersed between hourly employees only, no managers."He knew that it had been a rough time with COVID, he knew that people were struggling in general. He noticed our staff was working really, really hard," Kaiser said.Rath hopes the kindness that Nicholas showed doesn't stop with him. "You don't have to give random strangers $2,000 but even just saying 'have a good day' can help somebody go from a zero to a 10," he said.Watch the full story in the video above.

With just three days left in 2020, the number of homicides and shootings in Cincinnati have already broken records, marking the city's deadliest year.So far, there have been at least 90 homicides and at least 484 shootings.Police and community leaders hope to reverse the trend in 2021.They said there are a number of factors leading to this outcome, including the pandemic, job loss and in some cases, a lack of even basic necessities.Community outreach advocates said it has been harder to address these needs from a distance.At one homicide scene in Cincinnati, neighbors echoed how exhausting and overwhelming violence has become along their streets.Yet the same heartbreak has been felt across the Queen City, as 484 shootings, with 85 of them deadly, shatter a struggling society in the face of the pandemic."Right now, they're on defense mode, and not only defense mode, survival mode, and that's what's happening right now on the streets," Pastor Peterson Mingo said.Mingo works with the Cincinnati Police God Squad on those very streets, trying to connect with the disconnected.He said a feeling of togetherness, of community, has been nearly muted by COVID-19."Because of the pandemic, a lot of that is gone, and now, people who basically could be talked down of basically doing the things that they were thinking about doing and not having that buffer, someone to come there and basically mediate the situation for them," Mingo said.City of Cincinnati data sheds light on homicides in past years.In 2017, there were 73 homicides.In 2018, there were 61 homicides.Last year, there were 74 homicides.In 2020, there's been a nearly 22% increase from 2019, with at least 90 homicides.As of Sunday, data we calculated shows Cincinnati outranks Chicago at 29.6 homicides per 100,000 people.Chicago has counted 772 homicides in the same time-frame, which equates to 28.66 homicides per 100,000 people.The city reported 475 homicides in mid-December 2019.Police said connecting with the community through gun violence outreach workers, as well as work by the Gun Crimes Task Force will be a big part of efforts to reduce violence in 2021.More than 1,400 illegal or stolen guns have been recovered this year compared to 1,057 guns in 2019, according to CPD.Mingo said while this increase in gun violence is not a uniquely Cincinnati issue, it is a cry for help."It's nationwide, and if it's nationwide, then there's a common problem," he said.Mingo said people are struggling to pay bills, feed their families and survive, and he fears for what the city may look like on the other side of the pandemic when assistance fades.He hopes to see a more connected 2021 to stop the violence.Cincinnati police said they also plan to strengthen partnerships with federal officials to help curb shootings.They said oftentimes, shootings are sparked by risky behaviors, gambling in the streets and drugs by a small number of people.

We need hope and we need progress moving into the future," Dan Collins said.City council approved a "Designated Outdoor Refreshment Area" and pedestrian walkway to help restaurants and bars hurt by the pandemic.People can grab a boozy beverage in a sanctioned DORA cup and share in the Cincy love of spring.Officials said the hours will run from 11 a.m. until 1 a.m., once the DORA is up and going.Cold beer, libations and bourbon will be more mobile than ever before in time for Reds Opening Day."I think it's exciting. I think more people will actually come with it being outside," Liz Brohas said.Jackie Reau, with Game Day Communications, said DORA on The Banks will start with a toast on March 25 and an announcement of guidelines.She said there are plans to install signage, mapping and sidewalk tattoos throughout the district's 85 acres and there will be extra law enforcement.The DORA stretches from Paul Brown Stadium to Heritage Bank Center, from Second Street to Mehring Way."In the summer, they did that thing on like Newport on the Levee and it was really awesome to be outside and, like, just feel, like, more normal," Gretchen Hinkel said.Reau said officials are also working on guidelines to prevent groups from growing too large, and she said the district will follow mandates including social distancing.People we talked with are ready to take their cups outside."I think it's really exciting. I mean, during Bengals games, they kind of do a little mini-version of that right here and there's such a good response. Everyone loves being outside, carrying their drink from place to place," Olivia Kennedy said.Officials said you cannot bring your own beverage to the DORA.People who venture outside of the DORA with their cups could be on the hook for an open container violation.We also reached out to the mayor's office for more insight into the plans, guidelines and rules, but a spokeswoman did not return a call, text or email.
