Remember when a new television season started in September? Not this year.

Looking forward to big-budget blockbusters coming to a theater near you next summer? Maybe not.

You've always heard great things about "Breaking Bad" or "The Wire" but you never got around to watching it? Now's your chance.

And it might be a while before you know how many Emmys your favorite show eventually takes home. The awards show, as with much in the TV and movie industry, is also very much uncertain right now.

But what you can count on is more reality shows, and maybe game shows, and probably more opportunities to binge shows that have already been on.

That's because about 160,000 actors who belong to SAG-AFTRA are about to go on strike, joining more than 11,000 members of the Writers Guild of America who have been on strike since May 2.

Prepping for the long-haul

Some movies are already complete, of course, like "Barbie" and "Oppenheimer," and set to hit theaters.

But any pipeline of new shows is already slowing to a trickle.

Data from film permits in California indicates that production of most shows and movies already has been halted by the writers' strike. Even though movies typically have a script in hand when they start shooting, revisions and changes mean a writer is usually needed while production proceeds.

Now with actors also going on strike, most remaining production will stop. The exception will be independent movies that are not associated with one of the major studios.

One group of television shows that will continue to produce new episodes is the traditional daytime soap operas. The writers of those shows are typically nonunion, and the unionized actors work under a different contract than the one that expired at 11:59 p.m. PDT on Wednesday.

But most other actors will stop working as soon as the union's government board votes to go on strike later Thursday. Rank-and-file members have already voted 98% in favor of authorizing a strike.

Actors will not be doing publicity for movies that are being released, including appearing on the red carpet at movie premieres or doing interviews on podcasts. Of course, the writers' strike brought an immediate halt to new episodes of U.S. late night shows, so the opportunity to do that sort of publicity was already limited.

How long will it last?

What isn't clear is how long this will continue. There are hopes in the industry that since writers and actors are out at the same time, that will put pressure on the studios to improve their offers and get everyone back to work sooner rather than later. The last time the writers and the Screen Actors Guild, the precursor of SAG-AFTRA, were on strike at the same time was 1960 — so long ago that Ronald Reagan was the SAG president leading that strike.

But everyone agrees the industry is going through unprecedented change as the ways that the public consumes shows are changing rapidly, and the economics are changing with it.

Disney CEO Bob Iger didn't seem to suggest there will be a solution in the near term, in comments Thursday morning.

"They are adding to a set of challenges this business is already facing that is quite frankly very disruptive," said Iger, who is set to receive more than $25 million in compensation this year, about SAG-AFTRA and Writers Guild in an interview on CNBC. "You have to be realistic about the business environment and what this business can deliver."

But the unions say their members are suffering because of the changes in the business, like the shrinking amount of broadcast residuals in the age of streaming, and they've been pushed to the point where they can't accept what the studios are offering.

"The studios and streamers have implemented massive unilateral changes in our industry's business model, while at the same time insisting on keeping our contracts frozen in amber," said a statement from Duncan Crabtree-Ireland, the union's chief negotiator, issued early Thursday morning. "The studios and streamers have underestimated our members' resolve, as they are about to fully discover."

So don't expect to see the return of many of your favorite shows any time soon.

After going dark for a year, the Golden Globes made a return to television Tuesday in a one-year audition to win back awards-season relevancy.

Stars and studios boycotted last year's ceremony, which was not televised, taking a stance that the Hollywood Foreign Press Association needed to make reforms when it came to ethics and diversity.

A "Wheel of Fortune" puzzle recently had contestants scratching their heads, while viewers grew frustrated at their numerous incorrect guesses.

The puzzle's answer was "another feather in your cap," but Laura Machado, a high school dean of students, was thrown off after her initial guess of "another feather in your hat," was incorrect.

Even when a "P" appeared on the board as the last letter of the last word, Machado's next guesses were lap and map, but the other contestants were stumped as well.

One viewer tweeted that unsuccessful attempts to solve the puzzle were "the most painful two minutes of Wheel of Fortune I've ever seen," while Josh Gad, the actor who voiced Olaf in "Frozen," also weighed in.

"God help us all," he said.

Previous "Wheel of Fortune" puzzles have stumped contestants, including one in which "Jolly good fellow" was guessed as "Jolly goof fellow."

But this incident had viewers enraged, with one headline reading, "Wheel of Fortune contestants spend two minutes reminding us America is in decline."

The show's longtime host, Pat Sajak, came to the contestants' defense.

"It always pains me when nice people come on our show to play a game and win some money and maybe fulfill a lifelong dream, and are then subject to online ridicule when they make a mistake or something goes awry," Sajak wrote in a post on Twitter.

"Sitting at home, it seems incredible that they couldn’t solve it, but I knew in real time what was happening," another tweet from Sajak says.

Sajak wrote that the puzzle's first answer, "feather in your hat," is how a lot of people say it and so, the other contestants believed it was a good guess.

"Now imagine you’re on national TV, and you’re suddenly thrown a curve and you begin getting worried about looking stupid, and if the feather isn’t in your hat, where the heck can it be? You start flailing away looking for alternatives rather than synonyms for 'hat,'" Sajak wrote.

Sajak added that he's been "praised online for 'keeping it together' and not making fun of the players," but said he feels for contestants.

"Truth is, all I want to do is help to get them through it and convince them that those things happen even to very bright people," he tweeted.

In closing, Sajak asked viewers to stop mocking the players or calling them names and to "have a little heart."

"These are good people in a bad situation under a kind of stress that you can’t begin to appreciate from the comfort of your couch," he wrote.

LGBTQ representation on television is growing.

Advocacy group GLAAD reports it’s getting a boost mostly from streaming platforms.

GLAAD published its “Where We Are on TV” report this week.

It found that on traditional tv, broadcast during primetime, nearly 12% of characters are LGBTQ.

That’s an increase of 2.8% since 2021, marking a new record high since the group started tracking representation on television.

For the first time in the report’s history, lesbian characters make up the majority of LGBTQ characters on tv.

Racial diversity is also up.

The group added five new streaming services to its report, including Apple TV+, Disney+, HBO Max, Paramount+ and Peacock.

This helped drive up the number of LBGTQ characters on streaming to a total of 358.

However, the group did not see improvement in all areas.

GLAAD reported it only found two tv characters living with HIV and they both appeared on one show – FX’s Pose.

This marks a decrease from 2021.

The report also mentions no network has created a show that features an LGBTQ-majority cast the way some cable programmers have.

The Nielsen company estimates that 101.1 million people watched the Los Angeles Rams win the Super Bowl on NBC and Telemundo. That's an increase over last year's game won by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, which had 92 million television viewers.

Another close finish capped a thrilling playoff season for the NFL, which had several games decided in the last minute. Nielsen said that another 11.2 million people streamed the game on their devices, giving a total viewership of 112.3 million people.

The increase defies television trends lately, where most programs are down from year to year because streaming provides extra choices and lets people control when they watch.

As Sports Illustrated reported, the halftime show averaged 103.4 million viewers, which topped last year's show by 7%. Viewership for last year's show was at 96.7 million.

The audience watching the game on Telemundo made it the largest Spanish-language NFL game ever, according to SI.

Hollywood mourned actress and comedian Betty White on Monday on what would have been her 100th birthday. The actress, known for her quick wit and warm charm, died at 99 on Dec. 31.

A television legend, Betty White was welcomed into homes for years. She held onto an illustrious career before, and long after one of her most famous roles, that of Rose Nylund on "The Golden Girls."

People magazine has celebrated with a newsstand issue and a special commemorative issue devoting the covers to White's 100th. And fans can honor Betty White's life on her centennial in different ways. White was an animal lover and held a close connection to the Los Angeles Zoo where she was a member of its board of trustees. Fans can head out to the accredited zoo and go on "Betty's L.A. Zoo Tour."

The Betty White Challenge, which was trending on Twitter Monday, is a call to action and another way fans and fellow animal lovers can give back by donating to an animal rescue or charity group in her honor. White's fan club dues were donated to animal rescue charities.

The Hallmark Channel will also honor White's career by airing a 40-episode marathon of "The Golden Girls" on Jan. 17.

Willard Scott, former longtime weatherman for 'Today,' who was known for his outgoing, jovial personality, and for celebrating the lives of viewers who had reached their milestone 100th birthdays, has died, according to the NBC show. He was 87.The show said Scott died this week, according to fellow weatherman, Al Roker."We lost Willard Scott," Roker wrote on Twitter. "Passed peacefully at 87 surrounded by family, including his daughters Sally and Mary and his lovely wife, Paris. He was truly my second dad and am where I am today because of his generous spirit. Nominations for the 78th Annual Golden Globe Awards, celebrating the best in television and film, were announced Wednesday.

This year's nominees are a mix of old and new, highlighting what we've been watching from home while in quarantine.

Tina Fey and Amy Poehler will return as hosts of the event for a fourth time. The Golden Globes will take place — virtually or in some fashion — on Sunday, Feb. 28 on NBC.

TV pioneer Norman Lear will receive the Carol Burnett Award for his lifetime of achievement and actress/activist Jane Fonda will be presented the Cecil B. deMille Award for her outstanding contributions to the industry.
