<p>LONGMONT, Colo. (<a class="Link" href="https://www.thedenverchannel.com/news/local-news/teenage-lifeguard-helps-couple-deliver-baby-at-ymca-pool-in-longmont">KMGH</a>) — A teenage lifeguard in Longmont, Colorado, helped deliver a baby while at work.</p>
<p>“It’s a pretty calm day usually,” 18-year-old lifeguard Natalie Lucas said, talking about her regular Sunday shift.</p>
<p>Calm is was what she was expecting on a Sunday morning late last month. That’s when expectant mother Tessa Rider, who was nine months pregnant, visited the YMCA pool.</p>
<p>“Thought, 'Oh, I’ll go for a swim. It’ll be nice and cool,'” Rider explained.</p>
<p>Rider’s swim didn’t last long.</p>
<p>“It suddenly dawned on me we weren’t making it to the hospital and he was coming out right then and there,” she said.</p>
<p>“The husband tells me they’re having the baby, and I’m like, 'Alright.' And the adrenaline kicks in right then and there," Lucas said.</p>
<p>Lucas requested for someone to call 911, grabbed a medical bag and towels, and was right there Rider pushed.</p>
<p>“She was there to do anything we asked. And the first thing I could think of was could someone hold my back up. And she did, and it was perfect,” Rider explained.</p>
<p>“The baby was already kind of coming out, and it was quick. I would say less than five minutes that it all happened,” Lucas said.</p>
<p>Baby Tobin was born happy and healthy on the pool deck of the YMCA.</p>
<p>“Without her, I would not have been able to safely focus my attention that Tobin came out and that he was safe and healthy,” dad Matthew Jones said.</p>
<p>Right after the birth, someone snapped a photo of the four — dad, mom, baby and lifeguard.</p>
<p>“I stayed calm, I helped them through from beginning to end that Sunday. It was quite the crazy thing to happen, but I’m pretty proud of myself,” Lucas said.</p>
<p>Lucas is off to college in the fall, after an experience she wasn’t expecting, but one that she admits she’ll never forget.</p>
<p>“I do hope to send the little guy birthday cards here and there,” the teen said with a smile.</p>
<p>As for baby Tobin, he gets a lifetime membership to the YMCA.</p>
<p>“He’s definitely going to be a swimmer,” Rider joked.</p>

Rioting raged in cities around France for a fourth night despite a huge police deployment and 1,311 arrests, with cars and buildings set ablaze and stores looted, as family and friends prepared Saturday to bury the 17-year-old whose killing by police unleashed the unrest.France's Interior Ministry announced the new figure for arrests around the country, where 45,000 police officers fanned out in a so-far unsuccessful bid to quell violence.Despite an appeal to parents by President Emmanuel Macron to keep their children at home, street clashes between young protesters and police raged on. About 2,500 fires were set and stores were ransacked, according to authorities. The funeral ceremony for the teen, identified only as Nahel, who was killed by police in the Paris suburb of Nanterre on Tuesday, began on Saturday. Family and friends were viewing the open coffin before it will be taken to a mosque for a ceremony and later burial in a town cemetery. As the number of arrests continued to mount, the government suggested the violence was beginning to lessen thanks to tougher security measures.Still, the damage was widespread, from Paris to Marseille and Lyon and even far away, in the French territories overseas, where a 54-year-old died after being hit by a stray bullet in French Guiana.Video below: French president says violence 'unjustifiable'France’s national soccer team — including international star Kylian Mbappe, an idol to many young people in the disadvantaged neighborhoods where the anger is rooted — pleaded for an end to the violence.“Many of us are from working-class neighborhoods, we too share this feeling of pain and sadness” over the killing of 17-year-old Nahel, the players said in a statement. “Violence resolves nothing. … There are other peaceful and constructive ways to express yourself.”They said it's time for “mourning, dialogue and reconstruction” instead. The slaying of Nahel stirred up long-simmering tensions between police and young people in housing projects who struggle with poverty, unemployment and racial discrimination. The subsequent rioting is the worst France has seen in years and puts new pressure on Macron, who blamed social media for fueling violence.Anger erupted in the Paris suburb after Nahel's death there Tuesday and quickly spread nationwide.Early Saturday, firefighters in Nanterre extinguished blazes set by protesters that left scorched remains of cars strewn across the streets. In the neighboring suburb Colombes, protesters overturned garbage bins and used them for makeshift barricades.Video below: Police in France conduct raids across country after violenceLooters during the evening broke into a gun shop and made off with weapons in the Mediterranean port city of Marseille, police said. Officers in Marseille arrested nearly 90 people as groups of protesters lit cars on fire and broke store windows to take what was inside.Buildings and businesses were also vandalized in the eastern city of Lyon, where a third of the roughly 30 arrests made were for theft, police said. Authorities reported fires in the streets after an unauthorized protest drew more than 1,000 people earlier Friday evening. In Friday's night violence, 917 people were arrested nationwide, 500 buildings targeted, 2,000 vehicles burned and dozens of stores ransacked. While the number of overnight arrests was the highest yet, there were fewer fires, cars burned and police stations attacked around France than the previous night, according to the Interior Ministry. Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin claimed the violence was of “much less intensity.”Hundreds of police and firefighters have been injured, including 79 overnight, but authorities haven't released injury tallies for protesters.Nanterre Mayor Patrick Jarry said that France needs to “push for changes” in disadvantaged neighborhoods.Despite repeated government appeals for calm and stiffer policing, Friday saw brazen daylight violence, too. An Apple store was looted in the eastern city of Strasbourg, where police fired tear gas, and the windows of a fast-food outlet were smashed in a Paris-area shopping mall, where officers repelled people trying to break into a shuttered store, authorities said.In the face of the escalating crisis that hundreds of arrests and massive police deployments have failed to quell, Macron held off on declaring a state of emergency, an option that was used in similar circumstances in 2005.Instead, his government ratcheted up its law enforcement response, with the mass deployment of police officers, including some who were called back from vacation.Video below: Aftermath of violent clashes between police and protesters in FranceDarmanin ordered a nationwide nighttime shutdown Friday of all public buses and trams, which have been among rioters’ targets. He also said he warned social networks not to allow themselves to be used as channels for calls to violence.“They were very cooperative,” Darmanin said, adding that French authorities were providing the platforms with information in hopes of cooperation identifying people inciting violence.“We will pursue every person who uses these social networks to commit violent acts,” he said.Macron, too, zeroed in on social media platforms that have relayed dramatic images of vandalism and cars and buildings being torched. Singling out Snapchat and TikTok, he said they were being used to organize unrest and served as conduits for copycat violence. The violence comes just over a year before Paris and other French cities are due to host 10,500 Olympians and millions of visitors for the summer Olympic Games. Organizers said they are closely monitoring the situation as preparations for Paris 2024 continue. The police officer accused of killing Nahel was handed a preliminary charge of voluntary homicide. Preliminary charges mean investigating magistrates strongly suspect wrongdoing, but need to investigate more before sending a case to trial. Nanterre prosecutor Pascal Prache said that his initial investigation led him to conclude that the officer’s use of his weapon wasn’t legally justified.Nahel’s mother, identified as Mounia M., told France 5 television that she was angry at the officer, but not at the police in general. “He saw a little Arab-looking kid, he wanted to take his life,” she said.“A police officer cannot take his gun and fire at our children, take our children’s lives,” she said. The family has roots in Algeria.Race was a taboo topic for decades in France, which is officially committed to a doctrine of colorblind universalism. In the wake of Nahel’s killing, French anti-racism activists renewed complaints about police behavior.Thirteen people who didn’t comply with traffic stops were fatally shot by French police last year. This year, another three people, including Nahel, died under similar circumstances. The deaths have prompted demands for more accountability in France, which also saw racial justice protests after George Floyd’s killing by police in Minnesota. This week’s protests echoed the three weeks of rioting in 2005 that followed the deaths of 15-year-old Bouna Traoré and 17-year-old Zyed Benna, who were electrocuted while hiding from police in a power substation in Clichy-sous-Bois.___Lewis Joly reported from Nanterre. Claire Rush in Portland, Oregon, and Angela Charlton in Paris, contributed to this report.

Bay Area native Kairan Quazi is an exceptional 14-year-old — next week he will become the youngest graduate in the history of Santa Clara University. On June 17, Quazi will be graduating with a degree in computer science and engineering from SCU.He can't drive or see an R-rated movie, but Quazi landed his first job as a software engineer for SpaceX which he'll be starting next month.Quazi was born in Pleasanton. His parents say he was speaking in full sentences at two years old."During third grade, it became very obvious to my teachers, my parents, and my pediatrician that mainstream education wasn't the right path for my accelerated learning ability," Quazi said. Not only was his IQ seen as profoundly gifted, so was his emotional intelligence. Quazi started at Las Positas Community College when he was nine years old and transferred to SCU when he was 11.If you ask him, he'll say he's had a fairly normal college experience."There wasn't anything to compare it to say oh this is different. But I really enjoyed it - I made a lot of close friends. I think after a few days the novelty of me being there wore off," Quazi said.At one point at Las Positas, Quazi was a stem tutor and became one of the most requested tutors on the staff.Higher education was fulfilling to the young mastermind."I went from being a third grade mutineer to really feeling validated intellectually," Quazi said.By the time he transferred to SCU, he had already started working with Intel Labs as the only undergraduate intern on his team.Quazi is grateful leaders gave him opportunities to see beyond his age."I think there is a conventional mindset that I'm missing out on childhood, but I don't think that's true. I think again that mindset would have me graduating middle school now and I don't think it makes sense for someone that's able to take rigorous graduate electives work in a prestigious co-op - I am joining SpaceX as a software engineer. I don't think it makes sense I would be trapped or that anyone whose abilities are beyond that to be trapped," Quazi said.On Tuesday, Santa Clara City Council congratulated Quazi for his past achievements and his future ones."In addition to you and your family who have given you all the space to grow like that, I would also like to compliment institutions like SpaceX and Intel that took basically exceptional out-of-the-box steps to make sure this thing happened," City Councilmember Raj Chahal said.Quazi currently lives in an apartment with his Mom in Santa Clara. They will be moving to Washington state in July as he joins SpaceX's Starlink team.ABC7 asked Quazi who has been his biggest supporter."My journey wouldn't have been possible if not for influential people and positions of power - again looking beyond my age but I would say my mom. She's been my rock through this entire journey and I know it's been very difficult on her as well. Again, now she's uprooting her life to move me to Washington. I'm eternally grateful for her," Quazi said.On Saturday, June 17, 1,598 undergraduates will be receiving their degrees from SCU. This is SCU's 172 graduation ceremony.

How was your food today? Good, good. Behind this long curly red hair and big smile right now. This is so new. This is my priority. Our brains. Five days of the week I am in here most of the day. If not in here, like I'm back there doing prep the other two days, I'm here but not in here. I'm in the office at Rosalie's off North Worcester Street in Strasburg. 18 year old Samantha Fry wears many hats. Leanna, there's that oatmeal. That's because she owns the place. How did you decide? Hm. I think I'm gonna purchase this restaurant. If you told me six months ago, I would, I was doing this. I would have been, you're crazy. I'm not, there's no way I'm doing that. Fry started working at Rosalie's as *** dishwasher at 16. As the years passed, she moved up in the ranks from kitchen prep cook. And as most high schoolers do these days, they go off to college after graduation and so did Fry first. It was business and environmental engineer. It changed *** little bit, but that's what I went to state for the half Manhattan. But when she came in for *** shift during winter break. An idea sparked when the past owners told her they wanted to sell the restaurant. I was thinking, I was like, wow, maybe that's something I might want to do because I had *** savings because I was saving up for college. So I had quite *** bit of money set away and I was like, I could possibly do this and she did. I'm the new owner. It's nice to meet you guys. She paid her down payment and took ownership in April. I'm glad you guys stop in because she was able to save her own money for *** down payment. That's, you know, I couldn't have done that. Rosalee is *** staple in Strasbourg. Definitely like ***, these guys come in twice *** day and this family almost every week, waitresses are awesome. The food's good cakes. Blueberries. Ok. Fry is not only an inspiration to her customers but her staff, I really think that, you know, she's just *** great example of, you know, *** young lady that's following her dreams and doing what she loves. Fry. Doesn't want to change the name of the right blueberry pancakes or update much, but she hopes her story has one clear message for her generation. You don't need college to make *** decent living. And I think that's what *** lot of people think nowadays. You're welcome, enjoy. I'll bring you some in Strasburg. Follow your instincts. Honestly, Bri Caswell, if it feels right. Just do it. News five? Ok, perfect. There you go.

<p>A boy who loved to visit a music store in Colorado received a generous gift from an anonymous customer.</p>
<p>A post on the <a class="Link" href="https://www.facebook.com/jbhartmusic/posts/10160220315792608">J.B. Hart Music Co., Inc. Facebook page</a> says Fallon, for years, would visit the Grand Junction store and ask to play the "Pantera" guitar, meaning the Dean Dimebag Darrell ML Guitar.</p>
<p>"We were shocked he knew some Dimebag riffs," the post says.</p>
<p>Fallon, who has Williams syndrome, a rare genetic disorder, was playing the guitar at the store when a customer took notice, according to the post.</p>
<p>"It moved this customer so much he returned to the store later, purchased the guitar, and asked us to give the guitar to Fallon anonymously the next time we saw him," the post says.</p>
<p>The guitar had been sitting in the store for eight months. Unbeknownst to the people at the store, Fallon had moved to Texas.</p>
<p>To their surprise, he visited the store over the holidays when he was in town for a visit. Fallon and his family had no clue a guitar was there waiting for him.</p>
<p>"It was a wonderful experience to gift Fallon his dream guitar as a gift from a kind stranger," the post says. "His mom burst into tears, and Fallon beamed with excitement. It was a special moment. There are still good people in this world."</p>

Valentina Orellana-Peralta's dream of becoming an American citizen and studying robotics ended days before Christmas on the dressing room floor of a Los Angeles clothing store, where she was fatally shot by police.A day after video released by the Los Angeles Police Department raised new questions about the fatal shooting Thursday, Valentina's mother described clutching her daughter and praying in the dressing room moments before the girl was struck by a round from a police rifle.A distraught Juan Pablo Orellana Larenas, who flew to Los Angeles from their native Chile, told reporters Tuesday that his daughter had once assured him the U.S. was "the safest country in the world."In tears, Valentina's mother, Soledad Peralta, described taking cover in a dressing room after hearing screams while shopping for a Christmas dress for the girl."We sat down and held each other and prayed," said Peralta, adding that Valentina fell to the floor after being shot. She spoke at a news conference outside LAPD headquarters alongside civil rights attorney Benjamin Crump and others."She died in my arms," her mother said. "I couldn't do anything. To see a son or daughter die in your arms is one of the greatest and most profoundly painful things you can imagine. Valentina meant the world to me and her family and friends. Now our sweet angel is gone forever. Valentina give us strength to find justice. My daughter, I love you."Orellana showed a skateboard his daughter had ordered online for Christmas — which he said she will now ride with the angels."I have no words to describe what I'm going through, especially during this holiday season," her father said. "I cannot sleep... All she wanted was to become an American citizen. I once told her, let's leave this country. 'No, papa,' she said. "This is the safest country in the world, a country of opportunity.' Now my daughter is dead at the hands of the state."Peralta said she was taken away and Valentina's body remained on the floor of the dressing room.LAPD on Monday released edited surveillance camera footage and police body camera videos showing the events that led to the shooting death of the teen by an officer firing at a suspect. The video shows a 24-year-old suspect identified as Daniel Elena-Lopez entering the Burlington Coat Factory store in North Hollywood with his bike and wearing a tank top and shorts. He takes the escalator upstairs with his bike.Moments later, he returns to the escalators wearing a multicolored jacket and long pants before swinging his bike lock at customers, according to police. He is seen attacking several female customers.Several body camera videos released by police show a woman on the floor covered in blood as officers arrive and attempt to find the suspect, who, according to a police statement on Friday, was a short distance away.An officer can be heard on the body camera footage firing three bullets toward the suspect, who later falls to the ground. Video shows the officer firing a rifle at the suspect.Valentina was killed by a gunshot wound to the chest, coroner records show."The girl's American dream has been taken from her," Valentina's uncle, Rodrigo Orellana, told CNN affiliate Chilevision from their native Chile this week."Everyone fled to dressing rooms and, unfortunately, the bullet found her," he said. "They're supposed to be the best police department in the world and they shot her."Police Capt. Stacy Spell said the investigation is in its early stages. The incident will also be reviewed by representatives from the California Department of Justice, the state Attorney General's Office and the Office of the Inspector General, according to Spell.Anthony Barksdale, a CNN law enforcement analyst and former Baltimore deputy police commissioner, said the video raises questions."Was the use of the patrol rifle justified?" he asked Monday night on CNN. "And ... if you're going to fire a (.223) round inside of a department store, those rounds can easily rip through a body and keep right on moving through the drywall. So the use of force must be looked at."Barksdale said that the suspect did not appear to be moving toward a victim or an officer when he was shot. The police department released three 911 calls and radio transmissions of the shooting.Police were called following numerous reports of an assault with a deadly weapon and a possible shooting in progress at the store. In one call a store employee tells the operator there's a "hostile customer in my store attacking customers" and "breaking things."While she is on the phone, the woman is also repeatedly heard yelling at people to evacuate the store. She explains to the operator that the suspect is using a bike lock to attack people. The suspect died at the scene. A steel or metal cable lock was found near his body, officials said. No firearm was recovered from the scene. The assault victim was transported to a hospital with head and arm injuries. Police do not believe the woman knew the suspect. The officer who fired the fatal shots is on "paid administrative leave, per department protocols for officer involved shootings, for at least two weeks," a police official told CNN.Last week, Police Chief Michel Moore said: "This chaotic incident resulting in the death of an innocent child is tragic and devastating for everyone involved. I am profoundly sorry for the loss of this young girl's life and I know there are no words that can relieve the unimaginable pain for the family."

<p class="body-text">Valentina Orellana-Peralta's dream of becoming an American citizen and studying robotics ended days before Christmas on the dressing room floor of a Los Angeles clothing store, where she was fatally shot by police.</p>
<p>A day after video released by the Los Angeles Police Department raised new questions about the fatal shooting Thursday, Valentina's mother described clutching her daughter and praying in the dressing room moments before the girl was struck by a round from a police rifle.</p>

<p>A distraught Juan Pablo Orellana Larenas, who flew to Los Angeles from their native Chile, told reporters Tuesday that his daughter had once assured him the U.S. was "the safest country in the world."</p>
<p>In tears, Valentina's mother, Soledad Peralta, described taking cover in a dressing room after hearing screams while shopping for a Christmas dress for the girl.</p>
<p>"We sat down and held each other and prayed," said Peralta, adding that Valentina fell to the floor after being shot.</p>
<p>She spoke at a news conference outside LAPD headquarters alongside civil rights attorney Benjamin Crump and others.</p>
<p>"She died in my arms," her mother said. "I couldn't do anything. To see a son or daughter die in your arms is one of the greatest and most profoundly painful things you can imagine. Valentina meant the world to me and her family and friends. Now our sweet angel is gone forever. Valentina give us strength to find justice. My daughter, I love you."</p>

Springdale police asked for the public's help Tuesday. They're seeking leads in a two-year-old homicide.Josue Lopez-Ramirez was a Guatemalan immigrant who police said came to the United States with his family for a better life. His life came to an end when he was just 18 years old."When you stand there and see a mother who just watched her son be taken from her, you never forget that," said Springdale police Chief Tom Wells. Wells was at this scene that night. It was the day before Thanksgiving, 2019.Lopez-Ramirez had just picked up his mother from work and had returned to their apartment on Chesterdale Road."They pulled in to their parking stall in front of their apartment building, and before they were even able to get out of the car, a suspect car pulled in behind them, kind of blocking them in," said Springdale police officer Keenan Riordan. A group of men got out of the car. Police said they first attempted to rob Lopez-Ramirez's mother and then him."And one of the suspect's shot him. He was shot one time, however, multiple shots were fired," Riordan said. The suspects took off. Police collected evidence and followed several leads, but nothing has led investigators to the suspects.Tuesday, police urged the public to help them get answers."Maybe the suspects spoke about the accident. Maybe they acted suspiciously," Riordan said. "Maybe they'll talk about it at Thanksgiving dinner. Maybe they talked about it at Thanksgiving dinner two years ago, and I'm hoping that will jar a memory or something like that now that the holidays are upon us again." The hope is to bring closure to a family who is still suffering."It is our interest to see justice for people who are victimized in this community, and it's also our experience, people talk about crimes. They just do," Wells said. Police said they don't know why Lopez-Ramirez and his mother were targeted. They said it was possibly a crime of opportunity. Another theory is that they were followed home. The only description police have of the suspects is what Lopez-Ramirez's mother gave them. She said it was a group of either three or four black men wearing dark clothes and in a dark-colored car.Anyone with information is asked to call Springdale police or Crimestoppers at 513-352-3040.

<p>New research shows U.S. teens who use electronic cigarettes prefer ones made by Juul Labs, and mint is the top flavor for many of them. That suggests a shift after Juul's sweeter flavors were removed from retail stores.</p>
<p>The results are in two studies published online Tuesday in the Journal of the American Medical Association. They include a U.S. government report based on a survey indicating that the U.S. teen vaping epidemic shows no signs of slowing down.</p>
<p>An estimated 28% of high school students and 11% of middle schoolers surveyed earlier this year had vaped within the past month. That amounts to over 5 million young users, versus about 3.6 million last year.</p>
<p>The results follow the Trump administration's call in September to ban virtually all vaping flavors.</p>

<p>PHOENIX, Ariz. — (<a class="Link" href="https://www.abc15.com/news/uplifting-arizona/this-az-12-year-old-wrote-her-own-book-and-launched-a-podcast">KNXV</a>) Neva Lee Recla may only be 12 years old, but she's already accomplished a lot in her short lifetime —- and there are no signs that she's slowing down anytime soon. She's working hard to make her goals and dreams a reality, and inspire a few others along the way.</p>
<p>At 7, she wrote and published her first book, "When Pigs Fly: The Parent's Guide to Inspire Your Young Entrepreneur," and launched her own podcast, "Super Power Kids," where she produced 100 episodes and totaled two million downloads.</p>
<p>Her podcast featured famous entrepreneurs, such as Cathy Lee Crosby, the original Wonder Woman from the 1974 TV film, and the founder of CEOSpace, Berny Dohrmann.</p>
<p>"I think a kid doing business is a bit unheard of," Neva said.</p>
<p>For her podcast, she said: "I liked incorporating what they did and I tried making it fun in like the kid world."</p>
<p>Neva has been an entrepreneurial go-getter her entire life, according to her mom, Tonya Dawn Recla.</p>
<p>She said. Neva asked to have her own business cards when she was two and even showed signs of networking while hanging out on the playground with other kids.</p>
<p>"She’d bring kids over, put out (her) hand, say 'Hello nice to meet you,' and what we saw happening was just developing that confidence," her mom said.</p>
<p>Inspiring her child and letting Neva lead the way on her own adventures is what Tonya said she focused on.</p>
<p>"Get to know your child, not through anyone else’s lens, not through what you think they should do, not through who you want them to be, not through what you wish you had done, just listen, and let them guide (the way)," she said.</p>
<p>Last year, Neva enrolled at ASU Digital Prep, an online K-12 school, where she is working on her second podcast, "Leave it to Neva," where she plans to share her passions, journey, and business advice with others.</p>
<p>"Not just inspire kids to do business but to show everybody that they’re loved and accepted for who they are and showing everybody that they don’t have to go on this path alone," Neva said. "I would say take what you love and turn it into a way to help people and know that it doesn’t have to be picture perfect."</p>

<p>BIRMINGHAM, Mich. (WXYZ) — A 15-year-old who was sent to a detention center for not completing schoolwork will be released from custody to her mother.</p>
<p>The Michigan Court of Appeals made the ruling Friday.</p>
<p>Grace had gotten into legal trouble last year, and as one of the conditions of her probation, she had to attend school and complete classwork, which <a class="Link" href="https://www.wxyz.com/news/oakland-co-teen-to-be-released-after-being-sent-to-detention-center-for-not-completing-schoolwork#:~:text=BIRMINGHAM%2C%20Mich.,from%20custody%20to%20her%20mother.&amp;text=The%20Michigan%20Court%20of%20Appeals%20made%20the%20ruling%20Friday.&amp;text=She%20was%20ordered%20to%20a,after%20not%20completing%20online%20coursework.">her mother tells</a> ProPublica her daughter was doing until the pandemic hit. She was <a class="Link" href="https://asnn.prod.ewscripps.psdops.com/news/national/judge-rules-michigan-teen-to-stay-in-detention-center-after-not-completing-online-homework">ordered to a juvenile detention </a>center for violating probation after not completing online coursework.</p>
<p>Oakland County Judge Mary Ellen Brennan ruled on July 20 to keep Grace in detention after violating probation by failing to complete online school work.</p>
<p>Brennan said she had to consider the actions that placed Grace on probation to begin with. Last fall, arguments between the teen and her mother turned violent. The judge says the mother was the victim and the daughter the aggressor.</p>
<p><a class="Link" href="https://www.propublica.org/article/thousands-demand-that-michigan-freegrace-after-the-teenager-was-incarcerated-for-not-doing-her-schoolwork">ProPublica</a>, a nonprofit publication, brought attention to Grace's story.</p>
<p>"This is a student with disabilities who was struggling with remote learning situation and ended up in detention because of that," said Jodi Cohen, a reporter with ProPublica Chicago.</p>
<p>"In school the student gets one-on-one support from teachers and is allowed extra time to complete assignments because of (ADHD) and other disabilities," Cohen said.</p>
<p>Without that support and the daily structure she was used to, Grace struggled. So she reached out to her special education teacher, "to say she needed help and that one-on-one tutoring began the day after the violation against probation was filed against her," Cohen said.</p>
<p>ProPublica's investigation also found the situation may have been influenced by race in addition to Grace's learning disabilities. Grace is Black. "The case may also reflect, some experts and Grace’s mother believe, systemic racial bias. Grace is Black in a predominantly white community and in a county where a disproportionate percentage of Black youth are involved with the juvenile justice system," the <a class="Link" href="https://www.propublica.org/article/thousands-demand-that-michigan-freegrace-after-the-teenager-was-incarcerated-for-not-doing-her-schoolwork">ProPublica investigation</a> stated.</p>
<p><b>The following statement was released on behalf of Grace's mother:</b><br /><i>"She is enjoying her daughter being home, and will determine her and Grace’s interest in speaking publicly next week. In the interim, they are both extremely and deeply appreciative of the outpouring of support from around the country, and for Grace’s release; she is anxious to be with her family."</i></p>

An officer with the Ohio Department of Natural Resources is being remembered for his strong work ethic and passion for the job.Jason Lagore died Tuesday night of an apparent heart attack while responding to a rescue at Rocky Point Lake in Highland County. "He assisted on countless, countless search and rescues, bringing closure to families and also finding people and being able to help them," said LaGore's friend, Shaun Lentini. Tuesday night, LaGore was trying to help a teenager who fell into icy water.Around 6:30 p.m., a 13-year-old boy started screaming for help near a private dock. A nearby contractor heard his cry and called 911."I'm at Rocky Fork. I had some little kid come up to me and said his sister's in the water dead," the caller said. "He come running up to us saying, 'Somebody please help me, please help me.'"The Paint Creek Joint Fire District responded to the scene. "By the time our crews got there, she was under the ice," said Lt. Branden Jackman. Jackman said they called in additional units from Hamilton and Franklin counties to help."The water was 36 degrees. Ya know, you look at water and think, 'It's just water.' A 36-degree water is no different than a three-story house fire. They'll both kill you just as quick," Jackman said. The 16-year-old's body was recovered about four-and-a-half hours later. The coroner said she drowned. He is waiting until all of her family members are notified before he releases her name.Sometime during the rescue-recovery mission, LaGore fell in the water after suffering a medical emergency. First responders tried to save him. He died at the hospital. The Highland County Coroner said preliminary results indicate LaGore had a heart attack."It affects us all. We all feel it because we're all family," Jackman said. Lentini said LaGore had a big heart and big vision. He said LaGore began the K9 program for the division of parks and watercraft at ODNR and has since led the first K9 academy. He had worked for ODNR for the past 15 years."He was well respected. He did a lot of training around all of Ohio. He worked with a lot of organizations with search and rescue," Lentini said. "When he wasn't working, he loved hunting. He was a guy that I went over his house for dinner and he'd send me home with some deer."Lentini said LaGore was a big family man. He is survived by his wife, Michelle, two small sons and his K9 partner, Sarge. The FOP Lodge 149 has started a fundraiser for LaGore's family. On April 9, 19-year-old Lauren Rhodes received her dose of the Johnson &amp; Johnson COVID-19 vaccine. She posed for a picture, grinning widely and proudly showing off the band-aid on her arm."I was like, 'One and done,'" she said. The Gretna, Nebraska, teenager went home that night and felt all the common, mild post-vaccine side effects."Fatigue and exhaustion," said Rhodes. "And then it just kind of got worse and worse."She said she felt sick for weeks and the whole time, she and her family thought it was from the vaccine."We just figured this is a reaction," said Liz Rhodes, Lauren's mother. Then other symptoms arose. Her legs buckled and her face drooped. She started showing symptoms that didn't match up with other peoples' vaccine reactions."If you asked me to squeeze your hand, I couldn't even squeeze it. Pick up my phone, I couldn't do it," said Rhodes. She visited Dr. Carmella Imig at the CHI Health Gretna Clinic. Imig told the family to go to the hospital, where an MRI highlighted a tumor pressing on Rhodes' spinal cord."They said, 'This can't wait. We have to get this out now,'" Rhodes said.On May 7, Rhodes was admitted to the hospital for surgery." was in the part of the cervical spine where if something would not have been done, she could have lost all function of her arms and legs," Imig said.Rhodes spent the next two months undergoing physical, occupational and speech therapy. She just completed therapy and is ready to be a normal college student again."I'm cleared for everything now," said Rhodes. "I can drive, I can bend, sit up, scoot, walk upstairs.""We feel like we got our daughter back," said Rod Rhodes, her father.Imig is thankful Rhodes got her vaccine, showed some symptoms and stopped by her office to get it checked out."It was actually a blessing that she did," Imig said. "Because it led her to the care that she needed."Imig said the symptoms of Rhodes' tumor coincidentally followed her COVID-19 vaccine side effects. She said the two are not related at all.Rhodes doesn't regret getting her shot and she encourages others to get it as well."Do it. I did it for myself, my family, my school. Protection," she said. "Even if it did cause a side effect, it made me aware of and we got it taken care of."

<p>"We just figured this is a reaction," said Liz Rhodes, Lauren's mother.</p>
<p>Then other symptoms arose. Her legs buckled and her face drooped. She started showing symptoms that didn't match up with other peoples' vaccine reactions.</p>
<p>"If you asked me to squeeze your hand, I couldn't even squeeze it. Pick up my phone, I couldn't do it," said Rhodes.</p>
<p>She visited Dr. Carmella Imig at the CHI Health Gretna Clinic. Imig told the family to go to the hospital, where an MRI highlighted a tumor pressing on Rhodes' spinal cord.</p>
<p>"They said, 'This can't wait. We have to get this out now,'" Rhodes said.</p>
<p>On May 7, Rhodes was admitted to the hospital for surgery.</p>
<p>"[The tumor] was in the part of the cervical spine where if something would not have been done, she could have lost all function of her arms and legs," Imig said.</p>
<p>Rhodes spent the next two months undergoing physical, occupational and speech therapy.</p>
<p>She just completed therapy and is ready to be a normal college student again.</p>
<p>"I'm cleared for everything now," said Rhodes. "I can drive, I can bend, sit up, scoot, walk upstairs."</p>
<p>"We feel like we got our daughter back," said Rod Rhodes, her father.</p>
<p>Imig is thankful Rhodes got her vaccine, showed some symptoms and stopped by her office to get it checked out.</p>
<p>"It was actually a blessing that she did," Imig said. "Because it led her to the care that she needed."</p>
<p>Imig said the symptoms of Rhodes' tumor coincidentally followed her COVID-19 vaccine side effects. She said the two are not related at all.</p>
<p>Rhodes doesn't regret getting her shot and she encourages others to get it as well.</p>
<p>"Do it. I did it for myself, my family, my school. Protection," she said. "Even if it did cause a side effect, it made me aware of [the tumor] and we got it taken care of." </p>

A 16-year-old was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries after a shooting in Avondale Monday evening. The shooting happened at the intersections of Reading Road and Rockdale Avenue near the Family Dollar store at around 7:30 p.m.According to Cincinnati police, a 16-year-old was shot and taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.Witnesses at the scene told WLWT that a teenage boy was crossing Reading Road when a car crept up and shot him. The vehicle then took off, witnesses said. Police have not released any suspect information."I ran outside without my walker because a child is just something you run for," said neighbor Jennifer Foster.Foster rushed to the scene at Reading Road and quickly realized the teen is someone she knows."I just passed him this morning, you know, and he knocked on my door yesterday morning, he said, 'Ms. Jenn, this your package because you're the only one ordered dog treats for your dog' and I said, 'Thank you baby' and he went on up the stairs and stuff," she said.On the street corner, a sign from Cincinnati Works promoted fatherhood and brotherhood. The neighborhood is trying to stop violence in the streets.Mitch Morris says it's a sad night in the city."My guys was just up here working, tonight. We came out here at 4:30 p.m., and worked and worked until it started raining. Right over here in this lot right here and so after it started raining, we called it off. Wasn't a half hour, hour later, we got a call there was a shooting up here. So we're back up here now," he said. With more than a dozen markers on the ground and frustration and heartache in the air, the community is traumatized by another shooting."All I know is somebody's hurt real bad right now. It's a family that we just need to pray for," Morris said.WLWT will provide updates when more information is available.

At 4:32 p.m. on Tuesday, someone called 911 to report a disturbance on Legion Lane in Columbus."We got these... grown girls trying to fight us. Trying to stab us. Trying to put our hands on our grandma. Get here now," the unidentified caller said.Neighbors said 16-year-old Ma'khia Bryant made that call. Columbus police have yet to identify the caller. Chief Michael Woods said he didn't know if Bryant was the caller."We do not know that. Again, that will be (the Bureau of Criminal Investigation) interviewing all the witnesses to determine who made those phone calls," Woods said. The caller's phone number was redacted in a computer-aided dispatch report obtained by WLWT.Footage from Officer Nicholas Reardon's body camera paints a picture of what happened once he arrived at 4:44 p.m. — 12 minutes after the 911 call.As Reardon stepped out of his car, people can be heard yelling. Reardon yells, "Hey."As he approaches a group of at least seven people, a female is seen falling to the ground during a scuffle with another person. That other person, who was later identified as Bryant, had a knife in her right hand. Reardon draws his gun as Bryant starts to run at a girl wearing all pink.At the same time, an unidentified man kicks the girl who is already on the ground. At that point, Reardon is focused on Bryant who still has the knife in her right hand.Bryant is seen drawing her hand back and then up, over the girl in pink who is pinned against a car. That is when Reardon fired his weapon four times.Bryant fell to the ground and the girl in pink took off running. After the shooting, the knife can be seen laying on the ground.Officers performed chest compressions on Bryant while others rushed to separate witnesses.Bryant died a short time later at an area hospital.Investigators have not yet identified the girl in pink, the man who kicked the other female or any other witnesses."Those are witnesses, so they were referred to (the Bureau of Criminal Investigation). So, (the Bureau of Criminal Investigation) would have that investigation. But again, that's part of their investigation," Woods said.A spokesperson for Ohio's Bureau of Criminal Investigation said he did not know how long it would take the division to complete its investigation.

It's the "welcome home" 17-year-old Owen Hansen's been waiting for for 98 days."This is so much people," he said. "I didn't expect this at all."A motorcade of Owen's friends and family escorted the teen's vehicle to the Emanuel Lutheran Church in Council Bluffs, Iowa, for a "welcome back" celebratory party Thursday evening.Owen hadn't been home to Council Bluffs since February when a snowboarding accident paralyzed him from the shoulders down.Dozens of his classmates, teammates, friends and family filled the room to show their support.Owen spent the past three months in the hospital and at Madonna Rehabilitation."It's been tough. Therapies, waking up in the morning, half the day full of therapy," he said."The COVID rules were hard. It could only be me and my husband there the whole time and what 17-year-old boy wants to hang out with his mom and dad for 98 days?" said Owen's mom, Jolene Hansen.Doctors said he is well enough to be back, but he still faces a lot of therapy."So we'll have PT and an OT come to the house for the first four weeks," said Hansen. "Then we'll be taking him to Madonna in Omaha for rehab."His family is also trying to raise money to build a home that's accessible for him."We have to have a lot of special equipment to move him and for him to be able to do things on his own," Hansen said. The family is thankful for the community's support."It's pretty overwhelming. It just makes my heart very happy," Hansen said."It's amazing and unbelievable, really. Just how many people care," Owen said.
