The best soccer players in the world are set to take center stage when the FIFA World Cup begins Sunday in Qatar.

Taking place in the winter for the first time ever, 32 teams are vying to be crowned the winner of the world's biggest sporting event.

The hosting country is set to kick off the event when they take on Ecuador at 11 a.m. ET.

Team USA, which failed to qualify for the games in 2018, is playing in Group B and will face England, Iran, and Wales, which is a team the Americans have never faced.

The U.S. will open up its World Cup campaign on Monday when they take on Wales at 2 p.m. ET. They will face England the day after Thanksgiving on Nov. 25 at 2 p.m. and will play Iran on Nov. 29 at 2 p.m. ET.

The United States has had some mild success playing in the World Cup.

During its last two World Cup appearances, the team advanced to the Round of 16 before they were eliminated. In 2002, they advanced to the quarterfinals. They made it to the semifinals in 1930.

The U.S. has somewhat of a history with two of the teams in its group.

Against England, the U.S. tied them 1-1 in 2010 but defeated them 1-0 in 1950. Team USA lost to Iran in 1998.

WAUWATOSA, Wisc. (TMJ4) — The Wauwatosa Curling Club is growing the game by making it accessible to anyone willing to try.

"My mom and dad have been curling for 48 years. I started in late 2015, earlier 2016 when I first got hurt," said Jeffery Haagensen, a veteran and adaptive curler."Do it. I mean you can think about it but if you just come out and do it you'll have an absolute blast."

As a Veteran and suicide survivor, Haagensen knows what it's like to start all over.

"Finding programs like this was that balance between people is always pushing you to try new things, but you kind of wants to do it at your own pace," Haagensen said.

An avid curler, Allen Miller has seen what time on the ice can do for people.

"There are other clubs that do wheelchair curling, but this goes well beyond that. I guess I get emotional when I think about it because I've seen the results," he said.

For the Wauwatosa Curling Club, their adaptive program started with the veterans back in 2007.

"We forged a relationship with the spinal cord injury unit and they began bringing veterans from the VA to curl," Allen said.

Still to this day, proudly hosting veterans, Haagensen will admit a sport he ignored most of his life has its moments.

"It looks easy, it is not. That was the first thing I learned. It's not about the competitiveness though, when you talk to people about the relationship they have with their teammates," Haagensen said.

Allen and other club members seized a chance to reach a part of the community that is too often limited by society.

"In 2015, we started an adaptive program opened to members of the general community with all levels of physical ability and ages," says Allen. "It [the program] exposes people who normally do not get an opportunity to be out in the community. Not just to be out in the community, but to be out and experience something [curling] that the rest of us kind of take for granted."

Here's what happened during Day 12 at the Beijing Olympic Games:

Hockey

The United States is out of the men's hockey tournament at the Olympics in stunning fashion after blowing a late lead.

Marek Hrivik scored with 43.7 seconds left in regulation, Peter Cehlarik had the winner and Slovakia beat the U.S. 3-2 in a shootout Wednesday to knock the top-seeded Americans out in the quarterfinals. The U.S. led for almost half the game before the tying goal when Slovakia pulled its goaltender for an extra attacker to play 6-on-5.

The U.S. had gotten accustomed to playing tight games in the tournament, beating Canada by two goals and Germany by one. But blown coverage in front allowed Hrivik to knock a loose puck past goalie Strauss Mann, who was impressive until that point.

Coming up empty on four power plays, including three in the third period, came back to bite the Americans. Matty Beniers hit the post on one of the best scoring chances the U.S. had in the third, but the team could not crack Patrik Rybar, who was playing a second consecutive day in net for Slovakia.

Freestyle Skiing

Freestyler skier Alex Hall led a 1-2 American finish in the men’s Olympic slopestyle competition on Wednesday with a trick on his first run where he stopped his rotation midair and turned in the other direction before softly landing.

Hall’s opening run drew a score of 90.01, which no one could match in three runs. His teammate Nick Goepper turned in a creative run on his second pass to earn silver. Jesper Tjader of Sweden took home bronze.

The American men have captured six of nine Olympic medals since the event made its debut in 2014. Goepper has three of them, adding Wednesday to his silver from the 2018 Pyeongchang Games and bronze from the 2014 Sochi Olympics.

“So proud of the boys and so proud of how they skied,” said Skogen Sprang, the head coach of the U.S. freeski slopestyle pro team. “They've put in a ton of work and they stayed true to the way they want to ski and that’s what we’re all about in this sport. ... Landing it when it counts is huge."

Kamila Valieva became the first woman to land a quad in the Olympics — two of them, in fact — and her historic free skate put a stamp on the Russians' dominant run to the gold medal in the team event at the Beijing Games on Monday.

The 15-year-old Valieva opened with a huge quad salchow and followed with the difficult triple axel before landing another quad, this time a toe loop in combination with a triple toe loop. The only blemish on her program came when she fell on her quad toe loop late in the program, but by that point, her first gold medal in Beijing was assured.

Another one could come shortly in the individual event, where the Russians are favored to sweep the podium.

They finished with 74 points in the team event to win their second gold medal in three editions of it. The U.S. earned the silver after back-to-back bronze medals at the past two Olympics, thanks largely to a winning dance program from Madison Chock and Evan Bates, while Japan climbed onto the team podium for the first time.

The celebration by Team USA was tempered by word shortly before the medal ceremony that Vincent Zhou had tested positive for COVID-19 after his free skate Sunday as part of regular screenings. Zhou was being tested again and needed to return a negative result or he would miss the start of the men's competition.

His positive test is certain to stress the rest of the American team, including Nathan Chen, whose quest for individual gold begins with Tuesday's short program. The two have been part of the same practice group since arriving in Beijing.

The Americans were the talk of Capital Indoor Stadium after Day 1, when Nathan Chen won the men's short program, ice dancers Madison Hubbell and Zachary Donohue earned the highest score in their discipline and the pairs duo of Alexa Knierim and Brandon Frazier finished third with one of their best short programs.

Valieva wiped out their hard-earned lead all by herself Sunday, then the Russians kept putting distance between the field.

Anastasia Mishina and Aleksandr Galliamov, the reigning world champs, took maximum points in pairs to begin the final day of the team event, even though they inexplicably collapsed to the ice on their final lift. And their ice dancers, Victoria Sinitsina and Nikita Katsalapov, finished second to Chock and Bates to clinch the gold medal.

That left no pressure on Valieva to unload the first quad — and then the second — by a woman in Olympic competition.

“In our team we’ve got Kamila Valieva, and Mark Kondratiuk too, and Sinitsina and Katsalapov, and Mishina and Galliamov, so probably every skater wants to keep the standard high and not let the team down,” Galliamov said.

The only controversy, both in Russia and abroad, was the decision to use the same lineup throughout the team competition. Two substitutions are allowed and only those who skate in the team event earn a medal, leaving some to suggest that Anna Shcherbakova or Alexandra Trusova deserved an opportunity to perform for the Russian team Monday.

Then again, that would have kept Valieva from being the one to make quad history.

Meanwhile, the Americans began their day watching a shaky program from Knierim and Frazier score just 128.97 points, last among the five nations, leaving Team USA and the Japanese team deadlocked for silver with two disciplines to go.

Sinitsina and Katsalapov's performance to a Rachmaninov piano concerto was timeless and elegant, but they lost a point for an overly long lift sequence to score 128.17 and give Chock and Bates the opening they needed.

Performing their avant-garde alien-astronaut love story, the U.S. champions skated with the kind of emotion and precision that could land on them on the dance podium before the Beijing Games are done. Their score of 129.07 was their highest in international competition and, more importantly, edged the Russians by less than a point.

“I honestly had no expectations,” said Chock, who along with Bates captained the American team. "I heard the Russians’ (score) right before we skated and I was like, ‘Oh, that’s such a hefty score.’ And then it was like: ‘All right, focus.’”

With maximum points from ice dance, the only way the Americans could squander their long-sought silver medal would be for Kaori Sakamoto of Japan to win the women's free skate and for Karen Chen to finish last for their team.

Chen made sure that wouldn't happen, following her shaky short program with a redemptive free skate.

The 2018 Olympian landed all five of her triple jumps, including the triple loop — paired with a double loop — that sent her spilling to the ice on Sunday. As the Cornell student wrapped up her program, set to a piano concerto by Japanese violinist Takako Nishizaki, she had to cover her face in a failed attempt to hold back the tears.

“Just coming back from yesterday is a huge thing for me,” Chen said. “I knew I could have landed that loop. I knew that I’ve been training so well and I’m just waiting for that moment. And for today, to go out there and to do that, was just such an incredible feeling. I know it’s the team event, but still it’s an incredible feeling."

BEIJING, Beijing —

Team USA earned its first medal of the 2022 Winter Olympics in snowboarding but it didn't come from reigning two-time Olympic slopestyle champion Jamie Anderson.

Instead, fellow American Julia Marino won the silver, bested in the final moments of the competition by Zoi Sadowski Synnott of New Zealand for gold with her best score of 92.88 points.

South Lake Tahoe's Anderson, the favorite to win the event, failed to make the podium and came in 9th place.

The slopestyle snowboard final was a windy Saturday for the 12 women qualifiers, which also included Southern California's Hailey Langland who finished 11th.

The competition is scored by a panel of judges that grade performances based on execution, difficulty, amplitude, variety and progression of the run. The slopes are full of several different features snowboarders can use depending on their creativity.

The format of the final is that the best score of three rounds is the final score.

Tess Coady from Australia won a bronze medal with a score of 84.15 points.

How Anderson fell short

Anderson fell in her first round. By the second round she was in 8th place with a score of 60.78 points, her best of the three rounds, before falling again in her third round.

At Anderson's Olympic debut at the 2014 Sochi Games, she became the first-ever women’s Olympic slopestyle gold medalist. In PyeongChang, she won gold in slopestyle and silver in big air.

She grew up in South Lake Tahoe and said when she got on a snowboard for the first time, "I, like, fell in love with the winter season."

She’s now based in Whistler, a town in British Columbia.

Ahead of taking off for the Olympics, she announced her engagement on social media to Canadian snowboarder Tyler Nicholson.

“What I love about our partnership is that we are willing to work through the challenging and darker times to rise above to the lighter vibrations and in doing so, we are a stronger team!” she wrote.

President Joe Biden and first lady Jill Biden will meet with members of the 2020 US Olympic Team Saturday in a livestreamed virtual reception.The first couple, who are spending the weekend at their Delaware home, "will virtually meet with members of Team USA to congratulate them on their accomplishments, thank them for representing their country so proudly, and hear about their journeys to and competition in the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games," according to the White House.In a pre-recorded message posted Saturday, the president applauded the Olympic athletes for their work leading up to and throughout the Olympic games, acknowledging, "I know getting to the Olympics is a long journey, and the pandemic made it especially difficult and draining, it made the impossible even harder. An Australia team that beat Team USA in a pre-Olympics exhibition was no match for the Americans in a tournament elimination game.Breanna Stewart scored 23 points and filled up the box score with crooked numbers as the Americans won their Olympic quarterfinal with Australia by a 79-55 score in Japan.Their 53rd-straight Olympic win sets the Americans up for a semifinal fight with Serbia.Team USA went down 5-2 very early but Stewart took over, scoring 10 points in a 14-1 run leading into a timeout. She'd finish the first half with 20 points.The Americans led 26-12 after one quarter, Stewart well on her way to upping the ante following 9, 15, and 17 points in her first three games of the Olympics.Australia, of course, didn't quit and opened the second quarter with a 13-2 run spurred by a 3-point play from Stephanie Talbot and a straight-up 3-pointer from Leilani Mitchell, who had nine points in the first half.It was a red herring, though, as Team USA dominated at both ends of the floor. The Americans held Australia to 30 percent shooting, blocking five shots while dishing out 24 assists (led by Chelsea Gray's eight). Coach Dawn Staley got everyone in the game, but it was all about Stewart. She shot 8-of-10 from the floor including 2-of-3 from beyond the arc, grabbing five rebounds to go with two blocked shots, a steal, and three assists. Stewart also drew six fouls.Brittany Griner had the highlight of the game, one of her two blocks and emphatic standing denial. TOKYO —

Caeleb Dressel is expected to be the star of Day 7 at the Tokyo Games as he seeks his third gold medal in Friday night coverage of the Olympics.

The U.S. women's soccer team plays the Netherlands in a rematch of the World Cup final, and Allyson Felix can become the most decorated female Olympian in track and field.

Both the U.S. men's and women's water polo teams play and Hannah Roberts in BMX freestyle will try to become the youngest U.S. medalist in cycling since 1912. She’d also be the first female teenager to win an Olympic cycling gold medal.

Swimming

Lilly King took silver and Anne Lazor won the bronze in the women's 200 meter breaststroke at the Tokyo Aquatics Center. Shortly after, Ryan Murphy captured the silver medal in the men's 200 meter backstroke event.

Caeleb Dressel is the favorite in the men’s 100-meter butterfly, an event he won at the past two world championships and is the world record holder. He's already won two golds in Tokyo.

Katie Ledecky will be attempting to earn her 10th career medal as a big favorite in the women’s 800-meter freestyle. A victory would give Ledecky six individual golds over her career, which would be the most of any female swimmer. Ledecky is currently tied with Hungarian great Krisztina Egerszegi after winning gold in the 1,500 free.

The mixed 4x100 medley relay makes its Olympic debut. The chaotic event features teams comprised of two men and two women, but there are no restrictions on which swimmers take each of the four strokes.

That sets up some odd-looking but thrilling races where big leads can quickly evaporate.

Track & Field

Activity has hardly started at Olympic Stadium but Friday gives a preview of what could be the race of the Olympics.

The women's 400-meter hurdles opening round puts Sydney McLaughlin and Dalilah Muhammad in action. The two have lowered the world record each of the past three times they’ve raced in a major competition. McLaughlin currently holds it at 51.90.

In the mixed 4X400 relay, a medal for the Americans would push Allyson Felix past Merlene Ottey of Jamaica as the female Olympian with the most track and field medals. She currently has 10 medals.

Water Polo

The U.S. women’s water polo team faces the Russian Olympic Committee in its first game since its first loss at the Olympics since 2008. Trying for its third consecutive gold medal, the U.S. lost 10-9 to Hungary in group play on Wednesday. It was the United States’ first loss since Jan. 16, 2020, at Australia. It dropped to 130-4 since it won gold at the 2016 Games.

Alex Obert and the U.S. men’s water polo team take on Krisztian Manhercz and Hungary. Obert scored twice during a tough 12-11 loss to Italy on Thursday, and Manhercz had five goals on five shots in a 23-1 victory against South Africa.

The U.S. is looking to strengthen its position for a likely berth in the quarterfinals.

Early Morning Soccer

The U.S. women’s national soccer team has advanced to the quarterfinals in Japan.

The Americans face the Netherlands — the team’s opponent in the 2019 World Cup final in France — on Friday in Yokohama. If they lose, they will go home.

Freestyle BMX

Hannah Roberts, a three-time BMX freestyle world champion at the age of 19 and the first woman to land a 360 tailwhip in competition, will try to become the youngest U.S. medalist in cycling since 1912. She'd also be the first female teenager to win an Olympic cycling gold medal.

Roberts since 2019 has won three world cup titles, three world championships and has a Pan American Games gold medal.

For the late crowd

Olympic first-timers Sarah Sponcil and Kelly Claes, the youngest U.S. beach volleyball team ever to qualify for the Summer Games, have a chance to finish with a perfect 3-0 record when they play Brazil in the round-robin finale.

The U.S. women’s volleyball team will play the Russian Olympic Committee live, and the men's trampoline final will also be held.

Tennis begins to wind down. The women's singles final is the headliner, along with the bronze medal matches for men's singles, women's singles, women's doubles and mixed doubles.

The third round of the men's golf tournament will also be played.

TOKYO —

Reigning Olympic gymnastics champion Simone Biles is out of the team finals after apparently sustaining an injury during the vault.

The 24-year-old U.S. star, considered to be the greatest gymnast of all time, huddled with a trainer after landing her vault. She then exited the competition floor with the team doctor.

Biles returned several minutes later. She took off her bar grips, hugged teammates Grace McCallum, Sunisa Lee and Jordan Chiles before putting on a jacket and sweatpants.

"Simone has withdrawn from the team final competition due to a medical issue," USA Gymnastics said in a statement. "She will be assessed daily to determine medical clearance for future competitions."

The Americans will be forced to finish the rest of the competition without her, severely hampering their bid to claim a third straight Olympic title.

The U.S. began finals on vault, with Biles going last. She was supposed to do an “Amanar,” a vault that begins with a roundoff back handspring onto the table followed by 2 1/2 twists. She seemed to change her mind in mid-air, doing just 1 1/2 twist instead.

She walked off the podium and was tended to by team doctor Marcia Faustin before making her way out of the arena.

Biles arrived in Tokyo as the unquestioned star of the Games but struggled, at least by her high standards, during qualifying. In a social media post on Monday, she admitted she felt like the weight of the world was on her shoulders and that the Olympics “were no joke.”

Biles won five medals in Rio de Janeiro five years ago and had a chance to actually top that after advancing to all five finals. It remains to be seen whether she will be available for the all-around final on Thursday night and the event finals later in the Games.

After two rotations, the United States trails ROC 2.5 points.

NEW YORK (AP) — Olympic outfitter Ralph Lauren has unveiled a bright graphic look in Team USA uniforms for the closing ceremony of the Tokyo Games.

The uniforms to be worn by more than 600 American athletes and those competing in the Paralympics include a lightweight jacket made in part of recycled plastic bottles.

The white drawstring jacket includes a navy collar and hood, along with striped red, white, and blue cuffs.

It will be worn with slim stretch white denim pants made of U.S.-grown cotton.

All had been ready to go when the Games were postponed last summer due to the pandemic.

According to The Associated Press, the Olympics are slated to open July 23 and end Aug. 8.
