Bed Bath & Beyond is hoping its latest financial move will allow it to stave off bankruptcy.

The company announced a stock offering that it expects to bring in more than $1 billion. The money will be used to pay off some of its debt and attempt to rehab the struggling business.

Bed Bath & Beyond filed a report in January with the Securities and Exchange Commission that said it received notice of default on a loan from JPMorgan Chase Bank.

The company also plans to close 150 more stores across the country. The announcement comes about a week after the company said it would close 90 additional Bed Bath & Beyond stores.

The company also announced last week that it was closing all of its Harmon locations. They are mostly located in New York and New Jersey— with additional locations in California, Nevada and Florida.

If the stock selloff does not work, Bed Bath & Beyond warned that it will likely need to file bankruptcy.

The retailer initiated a new merchandising and inventory strategy in the third quarter of 2022. However, Sue Gove, president and CEO of Bed Bath & Beyond Inc., said they did not achieve their goals.

The company reported that sales declined more than 30% compared to the third quarter of 2021.

Welcome back to cheddar news. Everyone going above and beyond big bucks, home retailer, Bed Bath and beyond doubling down on efforts to compete with online retailers. The chain expanding in store pickup hours and shortening, wait times for same day delivery. Well, joining me now is rafi Massoud, executive vice president and chief digital officer at Bed Bath and beyond rafi. Thank you so much for taking the time this afternoon. I know your company in year one of a three year transformation. How's it going? It's going great, thank you for having me. Our digital first approach has power, consistent growth for many quarters in a row. Our customers are responding and PSS all time high and we continue to reinvent ourselves as an authority in home space. Um, and uh, and this week we announced our launch of buy online pick up in store 1-hour promise where customers are able to place an order on bed bath and beyond dot com. Bye bye baby dot com and come into our store within an hour and pick up their order. And we're also expanding our curb site services by allowing our customers to uh, come an hour ahead of store opening and pick up the curbside order. Just continuing to reinvent on ease and convenience for our customers. And I see investors like it. The stock of 50% year to date over the past 12 months, up close to 200%. So it seems like investors are embracing this transformation that's underway roughly what else is in. The pipeline for your company as it looks to innovate. Yeah, we continue to focus on elevating our customer experience. We're taking a data led approach uh listening to our customers over last year, and a half we have implemented over 200 changes on our digital platforms to make it more convenient and easy for our customers to shop from improving the speed of our mobile sites by 75% to making it more convenient and faster to shop from reducing the number of steps is used to take to check out from 7 to 3. Um The 2nd, 2nd part of our strategy is to unlock Omni always, which was the move from moving from a multi channel retailer to Omni channel retailer would launch of services like buy online pick up in store curbside and and same day delivery and adopting and embracing a digital first way of ways of working which is uh embracing agile and embracing data and moving with the speed of customer changes. What's the data that you can share as to how demand is changing with these innovations? Well, I'll share the digital results for our first quarter. Um digital contributed to 38% of our total revenue are net sales um and it's powered by our store network. So 30 30 plus percent of digital sales were fulfilled by our store channels. Um And we attracted over 11 million customers to our digital properties last year. New customers uh and our NPS is all time high. Our mobile app is resonating with our customers and we're making it more convenient and easy. Next week we are reopening our flagship store in Chelsea neighborhood in Manhattan where you will see a lot more digital innovations come to life, uh, layering on top of the in store experience. Mm hmm. Back to school season, Not too far out. And I know that historically that has been a positive time for your retailer students packing up buying things before they move into their college dorm or you know, in any sort of capacity there. What is the expectation or from bed bath when it comes to back to school season this year? So, we're uh, we're ready for back to back to college, back to school. We are making it easier for our customers who are heading back to college, easier to shop. Uh much more curated and stronger experience online with the new pack and hold or elevated pack and hold experience where our college customers can go online and go through a curated assortment back to college uh, products and merchandise and be able to place the order and pick it up days before they return back to college. Now, in terms of the expectation digital sales here, How quickly rafi our digital sales expanding. Just give us an indication as to that in store traffic and how that compares as a share of the pie to the digital component. Yeah, well, this past year and a half has taught all of us that predicting the future can be very dangerous. So how many channels will continue to be an essential difference uh, in our strategy to provide customers with that ease and experience. And we are moving from a omni channel retailer to an Omni Always retailer, uh, and continuing to elevate the experience and continue to double down on our Omni channel capabilities. Alright, Raffi Massoud. I know a lot of people they like those 20% off coupons. We got a lot of traveling and moving in coming in ahead of us. We'll leave it there. Raffy is the executive vice president, chief digital officer at bed bath and beyond. Thank you again.

Bed Bath & Beyond revealed the locations of 37 of the approximately 200 stores it plans to close by the end of this year. The plans, which were announced two years ago, are part of Bed Bath & Beyond's multi-year transformation that includes creating new, private labels, remodeling stores and focusing on e-commerce under CEO Mark Tritton. Affected locations will be closed by the end of February and are currently having liquidation sales.Bed Bath & Beyond is in the midst of remodeling 450 stores, representing about half of its locations, at a cost of $250 million. The company has been hit with falling sales and declining foot traffic in recent years as shoppers defect to competitors, such as Target and Amazon, which carry much of the same household basics that Bed Bath & Beyond sells.Tritton joined Bed Bath & Beyond from Target three years ago and has led the company through a turnaround over the past few years as housebound shoppers increased their spending on kitchen and home essentials. The retailer released earnings Thursday and missed analysts' expectations.
Retail is in the red across America as coronavirus-related closures have pushed already struggling retailers over the edge.

The apparel chain J.Crew is one of them. It has becoming the first major retailer to file for bankruptcy since the pandemic closures began.

“You had this phenomenon where you had this overbuilt retail, combine that with the pressures from e-commerce, it was already a real volatile sector,” said Rick Stein with Urban Decision Group. “Then throw COVID-19 into it. It is likely that this will be the thing that kills off an awful lot of retail.”

Stein’s company has conducted a commercial analysis to quantify the impact the closures have had on retail.

“None of these businesses had plans for a zero-revenue situation,” said Stein. “We are estimating as many as 40% of existing small store clothing retailer could close.”

UDG’s research shows so many small apparel retailers are planning to close their stores for good because, in addition to zero or near zero revenue, they are struggling with reopening unknowns. One major unknown is how many customers will be allowed to enter their stores at one time. Another is if customers will even be able to try on clothes. The latter is one of the main reason customers come into brick and mortar store locations.

“When you put all those things together, it can spell the death nail for a lot of retail,” Stein added.

According to Coresight Research, around 15,000 stores are expected to permanently close this year, which is at least 50% higher than last year’s record high of 9,548 retail store closures.

Several major retailers, similar to J.Crew, will like shutter many stores but the companies won’t cease to exist. Most will start closing a mass number of stores after filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, which will allow them to restructure.

“The big push years ago was to be in every mall, to have locations everywhere, I think the exact opposite will be now,” said David Berliner with BDO.

Berliner believes most companies will invest in a stronger online presence and focus their physical storefront footprint at well-performing locations. Chapter 11 will allow most retailers to reorganize the business and do that.

So, it is likely that J Crew is just the beginning of the wave of retailers to file for bankruptcy, although we may not see too many doing so until all states reopen and social distancing restrictions are relaxed.

“Normally, you liquidate your inventory in some stores to benefit and provide liquidity for the other stores to continue. That can’t work right now because there is just no opportunity to do that,” said Berliner. “You can’t really do a going out of business sale online, at least no one has tried it the same way, so I think that is also partially holding them back.”

Berliner, Stein and most experts agree, retail was overbuilt in this U.S. already and mass closures of brick and mortar stores were going to happen. However, the volume of closures we’ll see in 2020 would’ve likely happened over several years. COVID-19’s impact has been speeding up those closures. It will also be linked to a domino effect caused by all the closures.

“We are going to have a phenomenon where certain malls are going to be weakened, because they may lose their anchors and some other stores,” said Berliner. “So certain retailers that were planning to stay open in certain locations may decide not to because that mall is now too weak.”

Surging shopper demand coupled with shipping container shortages and bottlenecks at ports has already triggered a tighter supply of products, from cars to shoes. In particular, some of America's biggest sellers of clothing and shoes cite one catalyst that has compounded the pressure: factory closures in Vietnam stemming from a second wave of the coronavirus outbreak there. That's led brands from PacSun to Nike to warn about the effects on their supply. In late December, Nike cut its full-year sales outlook due to supply chain issues, despite its CEO noting strong consumer demand.Nike makes about three-quarters of its shoes in Southeast Asia, with 51% and 24% of manufacturing in Vietnam and Indonesia respectively. But as the Vietnam government-imposed pandemic-related restrictions, including a mandatory shutdown of factories for several weeks from July into September, Nike said it incurred 10 weeks of lost production.Even when factories start to reopen, which the company expects to happen in phases beginning in October, ramping up to full production could take several months, Nike's chief financial officer Matthew Friend said in a recent earnings call. Half of Nike's clothing factories in Vietnam are currently closed, company executives said during that call.Vietnam accounts for a third of sports brand Under Armour's footwear and clothing production. Under Armour's CEO Patrik Frisk said during its most recent earnings call in August that it was closely monitoring the impact of factory shutdowns there on its supply chain there, calling it a "developing situation."Ugg, Coach and Michael Kors have exposureVietnam is a crucial supplier to the U.S. in particular for apparel and footwear."It's a very big partner of the United States. It's our second-largest source of apparel and footwear," said Steve Lamar, president and CEO of the American Apparel and Footwear Association, an industry group. China is the largest supplier of clothing and shoes, according to the AAFA.In July, Vietnam was caught in the throes of a coronavirus outbreak caused by a suspected new variant of the virus, which Vietnam's health minister said led to a fast spread of new infections in the nation's industrial zones. The government subsequently imposed strict lockdowns and temporarily shut factories there until mid-August, then extended it into September. Some factories are still closed. All of this means that production for everything from sneakers and sandals to jeans, dresses, T-shirts, jackets and more are stalled. In a research note last month, BITG analyst Camilo Lyon said athletic footwear brands such as Nike and Adidas are most at risk of having serious supply chain disruptions because "Vietnam has served as a strong manufacturing alternative to China in recent years."Other brands that have significant manufacturing exposure to Vietnam, he said, include Ugg maker Deckers Outdoor, Columbia Sportswear, Coach parent Tapestry and Capri Holdings (which owns the Michael Kors brand).Lyon estimates it may take five to six months for factories in Vietnam to be back up and running normally when the lockdown ends. And whenever they do come back online, he anticipates another issue: staffing."Vietnamese factories will also likely have trouble getting workers to come back to work post-lockdown," he said.Teen retailer PacSun is expecting an impact on the holiday season.Brieane Olson, president of PacSun, said in an interview in August with CNNBusiness that about 10% of its goods are sourced from Vietnam.Olson said the retailer was already dealing with a two-to-four-week delay for its back-to-school inventory this year because of the ongoing global supply chain delays. Now, she said, new products for the winter and holiday season are likely to also face another four-week delay, she said, making it a challenge to get new fashions and styles in jeans, tops, sweaters and sweatshirts into stores in a timely manner. And there's an additional effect on the consumer, Olson said: Having less product means the retailer will pull back on discounts "because there is no need for it," she said.
