Eight teenage girls were charged with murder Tuesday in the stabbing death of a 59-year-old Toronto man in what police are calling a "swarming" attack.

The man was found stabbed Sunday shortly after 12 a.m., following a report of an assault in the area of York Street and University Avenue. The man was taken to a nearby hospital where he later died, police said. Authorities did not release the man's name pending family notification.

The eight girls were found shortly after the attack and taken into custody and charged with second-degree murder, Detective Sgt. Terry Browne of the Toronto Police Service Homicide Unit said during a news conference Tuesday.

Three of the girls are 13, three of them are 14, and two of them are 16, according to a news release from the Toronto Police Service.

The group of teenagers "met each other through social media. They come from varying parts of the city," Browne said Tuesday.

"We don't know how or why they met on that evening and why that destination was downtown Toronto," Browne said, adding police believe the group may have been involved in an "altercation" earlier in the evening before the stabbing.

Browne said he would not call the group of girls a "gang" but noted they participated in a behavior known as "swarming," in which multiple attackers target a victim simultaneously. A number of weapons were also found with the girls, Browne added.

Three of the girls have had "prior contact" with police, Browne said.

CINCINNATI — A man is accused of stabbing his mother to death early Sunday morning in North College Hill.

Vanessa Quarles called 911 and said her son, 24-year-old T'ontae Farley, had a kitchen knife and was trying to get into her bedroom. She told the dispatcher that Farley was diagnosed with schizophrenia. While she was on the phone with the police, he was able to get into her room.

According to court documents, Farley stabbed his mother multiple times at her apartment on Daly Road. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Following the stabbing, an affidavit said Farley asked for a hug from officers, and when they asked why, he said, "Because I stabbed my mother."

Police charged Farley with murder. He is expected to be arraigned Monday morning.

CINCINNATI — Investigators are offering a reward for information that leads to the location of a 3-year-old boy who went missing in December.

A city administration official said in an email Tuesday that Crimestoppers is offering $2,500 for information in the disappearance of Nylo Lattimore, last seen Dec. 4, 2020.

Police found the toddler's mother, 29-year-old Nyteisha Lattimore, near the Purple People Bridge, dead from stab wounds on Dec. 12. Her boyfriend, 20-year-old Desean Brown, is currently being held at the Hamilton County Detention Center, charged with murder in the woman's death.

In the days following Nyteisha Lattimore's death, Cincinnati police announced they suspected foul play in the boy's disappearance.

Police asked that anyone with information about the case call Crimestoppers at 513-352-3040.

TOKYO, Tokyo —

A man with a knife stabbed at least 10 passengers on a commuter train in Tokyo on Friday and was captured by police after fleeing, fire department officials and news reports said.

NHK public television said one passenger was seriously injured. It said the suspect left his knife behind as he fled and later gave himself up at a convenience store. The Japanese capital is currently hosting the Olympics, which end Sunday.

The Tokyo Fire Department said nine of the 10 injured passengers were taken to nearby hospitals, while the tenth was able to walk away. All of those injured were conscious, fire department officials said.

A witness at a nearby station where the train stopped said passengers were rushing out of the carriages and shouting that there was a stabbing and asking for first aid. Another witness told NHK that he saw passengers smeared with blood come out of the train, as an announcer asked for doctors and for passengers carrying towels.

Dozens of paramedics and police arrived at the station, one of the witnesses said.

NHK said the suspect later walked into a convenience store and identified himself as the suspect on the news and said he was tired of running away. The store manager called police after seeing blood stains on the man's shirt. Police were questioning the man as they prepared his arrest, NHK said.

The stabbing occurred near Seijogakuen station, according to railway operator Odakyu Electric Railway Co.

Police declined to comment and no other details were immediately available.

While shooting deaths are rare in Japan, the country has had a series of high-profile killings with knives in recent years.

In 2019, a man carrying two knives attacked a group of schoolgirls waiting at a bus stop just outside Tokyo, killing two people and injuring 17 before killing himself. In 2018, a man killed a passenger and injuring two others in a knife attack on a bullet train. In 2016, a former employee at a home for the disabled allegedly killed 19 people and injured more than 20.

The mother of a Florida teenager accused of carrying out a brutal stabbing last month was charged with tampering with evidence on Saturday for allegedly washing a pair of bloody jeans her son had worn, according to an arrest warrant.Crystal Smith, 35, was booked into the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office Detention in St. Augustine, Florida, on a $25,000 bond, the sheriff's office said in a news release.Her son, 14-year-old Aiden Fucci, was charged last week as an adult with first-degree murder for the fatal stabbing of 13-year-old Tristyn Bailey, prosecutors have said. He allegedly stabbed her more than 100 times, according to authorities.According to an arrest warrant from the sheriff's office, deputies interviewed the boy, with his mother present, at their residence on May 9 after Tristyn had been reported missing. Video surveillance from the home shows that after the teen left with deputies, Smith went to her son's bedroom, retrieved what appeared to be a pair of jeans, took them to the bathroom and appeared to scrub them in the sink, according to the warrant.Later, during an interview at the sheriff's office, Fucci's parents asked him about anything that would be on his clothes from the night before, the warrant states. "(Smith) asked A.F. if he was sure there was nothing on them, A.F. responded 'I think so, why?' (Smith) could be observed giving A.F. a questioning look and whispered 'Blood,'" the warrant states.The jeans were located during a search of the home and tested positive for the presence of blood, the warrant states. The drain of the bathroom sink where Smith was seen scrubbing the jeans also tested positive for the presence of blood, according to the warrant."Crystal Smith will be held responsible for her role in this case and justice will be served for Tristyn Bailey and her family," the sheriff's office said Saturday in a news release. Smith entered the detention facility shortly after noon on Saturday and was released less than two hours later, the facility's website said. CNN is working to determine if she has legal representation.Her arrest comes just under a month after Tristyn's body was found on May 9, hours after her family had reported her missing in St. Johns County, Florida, the sheriff's office said. There were at least 49 defensive wounds to her head, hands and arms, according to R.J. Larizza, state attorney for the 7th Judicial Circuit."To say that it was horrific could arguably be made as an understatement," Larizza said.Fucci was initially charged with second-degree murder in connection with Bailey's killing, but the charge was upgraded to first-degree murder due to the nature of the crime, Larizza said.Witnesses told authorities that Fucci allegedly made statements that he intended to kill someone by taking them into the woods and stabbing them, prosecutors said. Larizza previously said the teens were seen on surveillance video on the day of Bailey's disappearance walking together.CNN has tried to contact an attorney for the boy from the St. Johns County public defender's office but has not received a response. The sheriff's office said the investigation is ongoing.
