SOUTHGATE, Ky. — More than 40 years after a fire tore through the Beverly Hills Supper Club, killing 165 people, the public will be able to discuss plans for a new development on the site of the fire Tuesday night.

In May, plans were announced to build a $65 million residential development on the site of the former restaurant. The 80-acre development, called Memorial Point, would include luxury apartments, single-family homes and an assisted-living center as well as a memorial to 165 people killed in the fire, officials said in a release.

The city of Southgate approved Ashley Builders and Vision Realty Group for the construction of the development.

"We're very excited about it," Southgate Mayor Jim Hamberg said. "I've been on this for 15 years, to get it this far, and it's very very satisfying, almost satisfying, to know we're almost there."

And while the development might look good to people from the outside, one survivor of the fire isn't convinced it's a good idea.

David Brock was there the night the Beverly Hills Supper Club caught fire and he said he will never forget that night.

"We couldn't get the door shut," Brock said. "By the time I was outside, the whole building was up in flames."

Brock said the developers of the site reached out to him in March for his opinion on the construction.

"I told them I didn't think they should build on top of where the people had perished," Brock said.

After speaking with Brock, the developers made some changes to their plan so they wouldn't be building on a particular portion of the site.

The Campbell County and Municipal Planning and Zoning Commission are holding a hearing at 6 p.m. Tuesday night to listen to other concerns people might have about the construction. The public can watch the hearing live on Facebook here.

SOUTHGATE, Mich. — A McDonald’s manager is being credited with saving the life of a man who went into diabetic shock in Michigan.

It started as a typical September day for Susan Causey, she had just pulled in to pick up her husband from the senior center in Southgate when the red flags went up.

"I could tell just by the way he was walking to the car that something was wrong. So, when he got in the car, he couldn't even talk," she said.

Causey's husband has diabetes. His sugar was dropping, and she knew she had to act fast.

"When you're a diabetic, you can drop so fast. You can go from shock to coma, and I knew he was at a very close point of coma," said Causey.

She said the closest place she could think of to get her husband help quickly was McDonald's. She pulled into the fast-food restaurant. The indoor section was closed, and there was a line of cars, but as soon as she got to the speaker, she yelled, "'I need a large orange juice. Can you please have someone run it out to me? My husband is in diabetic shock,'" she recounted.

Inside, workers turned to manager James Dalpiaz for help.

"I ran. And I said, 'I got it. I got it. I got it. I know what to do.' So, I'm pouring sugar in there. And they said, 'Oh, she only asked for orange juice.' And I said, 'I know what I'm doing, just trust me,'" said Dalpiaz.

You see, Dalpiaz's aunt also has diabetes, and he knew just what to do. Instinct kicked in. He ran out to Causey and her husband carrying an orange juice loaded with sugar.

"I didn't even think to tell him to put sugar in it. You know, when stuff like this happens, I don't care how many times it happens, I always get shook up," said Causey. "You've got to react pretty quick to it. And he did. So, he's my little hero forever."

Causey said because of her husband’s other health issues, the day could have really turned into a disaster if it weren’t for Dalpiaz. She went on Facebook later that day to give him a shoutout on a community page. And the response was overwhelming.

"I'm really humbled by all the responses I'm getting because I'm kind of shy guy, so I feel like I don't deserve it, you know, I'm just doing what was right," said Dalpiaz.

It’s that quick-thinking kindness that Causey and her husband won’t soon forget.

"I think there was an angel on my husband's shoulder that day ... it's weird how it all panned out," she said.

FRANKLIN COUNTY, Ind. — The Franklin County Sheriff’s Department is investigating a fatal crash that killed a woman Friday afternoon

Just after 2 p.m. on May 28, Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to a report of a fatal crash on State Road 1 near Old State Road 1 in Southgate.

Authorities said a husband and wife, Ronald and Vanessa Bailey, of Eaton Ohio, were traveling southbound on State Road 1 in separate vehicles. At the time the couple reached a left-hand curve at the top of a hill, a third vehicle, a 2015 Nissan Rogue travelled left of center and struck the Mazda 6 being driven by Vanessa Bailey head-on.

After being struck, the Mazda 6 went off the road and down a grassy embankment. The Franklin County Coroner pronounced 56-year-old Vanessa Bailey dead at the scene.

The male driver of the 2015 Nissan Rogue was transported to a Cincinnati-area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. He has not been charged at this time.

According to the news release put out by the Franklin County Sheriff’s Department, the driver said he possibly fell asleep while driving.

Ronald Bailey was treated by emergency crews at the scene.

The investigation is still ongoing.
