<p>RODANTHE, N.C. — The National Park Service says two beach houses have fallen into the waves along North Carolina's coast. The homes, which were unoccupied when they fell into the ocean, were located along Ocean Drive in the Outer Banks community of Rodanthe. </p>
<p> <iframe src="https://www.facebook.com/plugins/video.php?height=476&amp;href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2FCapeHatterasNS%2Fvideos%2F1124971368360690%2F&amp;show_text=false&amp;width=267&amp;t=0" width="267" height="476" style="border:none;overflow:hidden" scrolling="no" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen="true" allow="autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; picture-in-picture; web-share"></iframe></p>
<p>The park service confirmed the collapses on Tuesday and has closed off the areas around the fallen structures. Debris from the first fallen house has spread widely. Officials from the Cape Hatteras National Seashore say they'll be working closely with the homeowner to coordinate cleanup activities. This is the third time a Rodanthe home has fallen into the surf this year.</p>
<figure class="Figure" itemscope="" itemtype="https://schema.org/ImageObject"></figure>
<p>“Unfortunately, there may be more houses that collapse onto Seashore beaches in the near future,” David Hallac, superintendent of National Parks of Eastern North Carolina, <a class="Link" href="https://apnews.com/article/environment-north-carolina-national-park-service-950b7804ae04d5798665429cc5afa226" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> in a statement obtained by the Associated Press. “We proactively reached out to homeowners along Ocean Drive in Rodanthe after the first house collapse and recommended that actions be taken to prevent collapse and impacts to Cape Hatteras National Seashore.”</p>
<p>The coast of North Carolina is almost entirely made up of narrow, low-lying barrier islands. Hatteras Island is part of what’s known as the Outer Banks.</p>

south Carolina. First and foremost, I want to thank my family, my parents who've had my back every step of the way. My four older brothers, my older brothers who taught me how to take *** punch, but more importantly, taught me how to throw *** punch. I love you guys, my son Boone who should be very much sound asleep right now. I hope one day you look back on this, it makes you proud. And I hope that you realize that big dreams are worth chasing and that to remember that if you ever get not down to always, always get back up and keep fighting campaign team. Thank you to chris Barron of the spin doctors. Right? I mean, it means so much that he's here because to be honest, my brothers would not have come here tonight unless he was here. Bill Wilson and D. J. T Streets. Thank you all so much. Thank you to the music farm for hosting us here, Tuesday evening, appreciate to, to center me MacLeod, thank you for putting yourself forward to run and for the spirited debate on the issues. And even though even though we are competitors, we're now on the same team and I look forward to working with you in the months to come as we bring our state out of the past and into the future and the Carlton boy, Calvin Mcmillan and cowboy Williams. Thank you for running and thank you for offering yourself for service to our amazing state and to even Governor Henry McMaster. Congrats, congrats, congrats on your hard, hard fought primary victory tonight, but the last last not least though, but the last not least the voters. You I mean, I cannot express my appreciation for your the trust that you've placed in me. And I promise you, I will never ever let you down. Yeah. So it is with great community and honor that I accept your nomination for governor of the great state of south Carolina. Oh yeah, go, go, go, go Look. Everyone, everyone in this room knows me, Everyone here knows me. And but for the people watching at home, just allow me to introduce myself. I'm joe Cunningham, first and foremost of my dad. I'm *** proud South Carolinian, an attorney, *** former ocean engineer, *** huge spin doctor Spam. Yeah. And most recently I had the honor of representing the low country in Congress. And look, I ran for Congress in the first place because I was sick of the divisiveness. I was sick of the partisanship and the selfishness. And so too many politicians more concerned with keeping their job than doing their job. And almost no one, almost no one was willing to work across the aisle to get things done. And after we flipped *** district that Donald Trump had won by 13 points, we got to work the change Washington and changed the way it operated. Our motto was low country over party. And it was more than just *** slogan. It was more of our, our North star in our guiding principle and I'm so proud that I had two of my bills make it through *** divided Congress and get signed into law by Republican president. One of those, one of those bills to help our veterans. Another another one of those bills. Yeah. Hell yeah, right Ethan knows what's up. Another one of those called the Holy Grail of Environmental Conservation Good. I brought the far left and the far right together to pass *** bill banning offshore drilling off the coast of south Carolina. We passed the bill to close the charleston loophole. Another bill to protect voting rights and so much more. But I also wasn't afraid to buck my own party. I stood up to democrats and stopped the congressional pay raise. I voted against *** budget to increase the debt and not just know, but hell no to those who wanted to defund the police. I was proud. I was incredibly proud to be ranked one of the most independent and one of the most effective members of Congress. Words, they've never been used to describe our current governor ever. And look, You know, *** couple weeks ago I turned 40 and someone reminded me that I am now officially as old as Henry McMaster's political career. You see, Henry Henry McMaster, mm mhm Yeah. Look, look, Henry master is not just *** career politician. He's *** forever politician. He was working in the halls of Congress before I was even born. Like he's running for us Senate. He's run for attorney general twice. He's running for lieutenant governor twice Governor three times and he was the chairman of the south Carolina Republican Party for over *** decade. Yeah. Henry McMaster. Henry McMaster is the oldest governor in south Carolina history and he's running to be the longest serving governor in south Carolina history. But the question is, the question is this, does, does he deserve and look, what can we expect? What can we expect from another four years under his leadership? And look, I appreciate his service and his long, long, long political career. We've got to be honest, We gotta be honest about his track record. Our schools remain at the bottom of every list or roads are ranked literally dead last in our country. We've been ranked the worst state for women in one of the worst states to start *** family, violent crime or violent crime and murder or an all time high. We're losing out on major economic projects because companies, they want to relocate where there *** good school safe. Rose *** healthy workforce and leadership with *** vision for the future. And right now we don't have any of that. And government master has shown little interest in attacking these challenges instead is focused on culture wars and national political fights that do nothing to help our state. He signed the most restrictive abortion man in America. But but now and now he wants to go even further and ban all abortions with no exceptions for rape, incest or the life of the mother. He vetoed *** bill to fix the roads. And while violent crime is an all time high in our state, the governor solution, it was to allow more people to carry guns in public. And as we know, as we know, shootings have skyrocketed this year. He helped kill the medical marijuana bill that would have finally given relief to veterans and people suffering from epilepsy or chronic illness. He opposed my plan to temporarily suspend the gas tax to help offset the rising costs at the pump. And until the court stopped, he wanted to send your tax dollars to private schools while at the same time underfunding our public schools and refusing to give our teachers *** raise. Oh, hey, look, look folks in south Carolina, We fire football coaches after one or 2 losing seasons. We do. Henry McMaster Is going on 40 straight losing seasons and he's asking for extension onto his contract. It's time for the people of South Carolina to stand up and say you're fired because Henry master because governor McMaster is the governor of the past and I'm running to be the governor of the future. How ah, because the future of our state, it's bright, but only if we look ahead, not behind and my plans as governor. They're ambitious because I think we have to be, you know, none of what I want to do is right. It's just simply overdue like dramatically dramatically raising teacher pay. So they are following treated like the heroes, they are right like legalizing marijuana and sports betting and then using that revenue to fix our roads and our schools like implementing term limits for all politicians. We'll tackle the gun violence epidemic so that, so that everyone, everyone can feel safe on the streets of their own communities. We're gonna protect our environment and we're gonna turn climate change from *** crisis into an economic opportunity to create good paying jobs here in south Carolina. We can, we can, and we will bring common sense change to south Carolina and friends. We're gonna do it without raising any taxes, right? Look, in the coming weeks, I'm gonna be outlining more of my vision for our state to ensure that, you know, that we don't continue to be left behind by our, by our neighboring states and to ensure that our best and there are brightest stay in south Carolina to raise their family and *** guarantee that every child, that every child in south Carolina has the opportunity in *** successful life, no matter where they're born, no matter where they live or what they look like or who they love. Folks. Look, I'm *** different kind of democrat and I'm gonna be *** different kind of governor, y'all know that y'all know that my film was south Carolinians, I'm asking you, I'm asking you to take *** chance on me and maybe your Republican, maybe maybe you never voted for *** democrat. May maybe maybe you don't vote at all. Maybe not even registered, but I want to change that. This campaign, our campaign, it's gonna give you something to be excited about. It's gonna give you something to be hopeful about, something to be proud of. I wanna give you something to vote for, not just something to vote against. Yeah. And look, I'm gonna be straight up with you. I'm gonna be honest, we may not agree on everything. But as former mayor of new york city, Ed Koch said, You know, if you agree with me on seven of the 10 things that say, vote for me. If you agree on 10 out of 10 things, I say, go see *** psychiatrist, but I can promise you one thing, I can promise you one thing we are gonna agree more than we disagree because I'm not interested in the division. I'm not interested in the culture wars and the wedge issues. While Governor McMaster wants to distract, deceive and divide, I want to unite, inspire and deliver. This isn't South Carolina is an amazing state with incredible people and this is *** state where we have chosen spend our lives and we we are the custodians of our future, there's nothing stopping us from moving forward and making the necessary change that we all know is required. The question is this is the question whether we are able to break out of our parts and corners, treat each other like human beings and focus on the things that really matter like our kids. You know, my four year old son Boone, he's my world, he's everything and I will work with anyone anywhere, any time to build *** better future for him and his whole generation. And I know you're and I know you're the same with your kids. You know, Henry ford once said if everyone is moving forward together, then success takes care of itself south Carolina, it's time for us to move forward together to turn the page on the, on the past and write *** new chapter for our state. Let's grab that pin together and go make history, Go to joe for south Carolina dot com, join our team. Thank you and may God continue to bless the great state of south Carolina. Thank you all so much.

<p>
Donald Trump on Tuesday notched a significant victory in South Carolina, where his preferred candidate easily ousted five-term Rep. Tom Rice, the first Republican to be booted from office after voting to impeach the former president last year. But another high-profile GOP target of Trump in the state, Rep. Nancy Mace, managed to hold back a challenger.Meanwhile, in Nevada, Trump's pick, Adam Laxalt, won his U.S. Senate primary, defeating a populist candidate who is arguably more representative of the Trump base.Takeaways from the latest round of primary elections:SPLIT DECISION IN SOUTH CAROLINARice and Mace have been objects of Trump's anger ever since a mob of his supporters stormed the U.S. Capitol to stop the certification of President Joe Biden's win.Their transgressions? Mace stated on national TV that Trump's "entire legacy was wiped out" by the attack, while Rice became an apostate for joining a small group of Republicans who voted with Democrats in favor of Trump's second impeachment."He threw a temper tantrum that culminated with the sacking of the United States Capitol," Rice told NBC News on Monday. "It's a direct attack on the Constitution, and he should be held accountable."Voters ultimately rendered different judgments on the duo, reflecting a split within the GOP about how to move forward from the Trump era. Rice's largely rural district is representative of Trump's America, where crossing the former president carries a steep cost. Even as Trump railed against both lawmakers, he chose to hold a rally in Rice's district earlier this year. That's because Mace's district, which centers on Charleston, is full of the type of moderate suburban voters who fled the GOP under Trump. It is one of the few districts in an overall red state where Democrats have been even moderately competitive in congressional races. The results demonstrate that the Trump factor can't be underestimated in solidly Republican territory, a potential warning sign for other Republicans, including Rep. Liz Cheney of Wyoming, who also voted to impeach Trump and has helped lead the House panel investigating the Jan. 6 attack. She's facing a competitive primary in August from a Trump-backed challenger.Another notable factor in the Mace contest: It amounted to a proxy battle between Trump, who is contemplating a 2024 White House campaign, and former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley, who is also considering a run.Trump backed former state Rep. Katie Arrington in the race, while Haley, a former South Carolina governor, effectively challenged Trump by campaigning with Mace.Video below: Katie Arrington concedes in South Carolina congressional raceTRUMP, MCCONNELL ALIGN ON LAXALT IN NEVADATrump and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell don't agree on much. One rare exception is Laxalt, who won Nevada's Republican Senate primary. The two Republican leaders haven't been on speaking terms since December 2020, when McConnell acknowledged that Biden defeated Trump. But they both endorsed Laxalt, who defeated retired Army Capt. Sam Brown, a West Point graduate and Purple Heart recipient who ran an unexpectedly strong campaign as a conservative outsider. The mutual support, which brought together the Trump and establishment wings of the party, demonstrates the intense focus Republican have placed on flipping the seat held by first-term Democratic Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto, who is considered among the most vulnerable senators. TEXAS HOUSE SEAT FLIPSA once solidly Democratic district in South Texas will now be represented by a Republican after Mayra Flores won a special primary election to finish the term of former Democratic Rep. Filemon Vela, who resigned this year to become a lobbyist.Flores, a GOP organizer who is the daughter of migrant workers, will only hold the seat for several months before the district is redrawn to be more favorable to Democrats. But her victory in the heavily Hispanic Rio Grande Valley is an ominous sign for Democrats. They are not only losing ground in a region they long dominated, but Flores' success as a candidate also demonstrates that Republicans are making inroads with Hispanic voters. Her win also has implications for Democrats' ambitions in Congress, denying House Speaker Nancy Pelosi an opportunity to add to her slim two-vote margin to pass legislation.FROM SOUTH CAROLINA TO THE WHITE HOUSE?Also in South Carolina, Republican Tim Scott coasted to an easy and unopposed primary win Tuesday for what he says will be his last term in the Senate. But another state is also on his mind — the presidential proving ground of Iowa. It's become an article of faith that there are no "accidental" trips to Iowa by ambitious politicians. And Scott, the Senate's sole Black Republican, has made several visits, including one last week.He certainly has the money to contend. As he campaigned for reelection to the Senate, Scott amassed a jaw-dropping $42 million. That's more than double the $15.7 million average cost of a winning Senate campaign in the 2018 midterms. It's also more than enough to launch a Republican presidential campaign in 2024.Even before his recent appearance at an Iowa Republican Party event, Scott has been raising his profile. He spoke at the 2020 Republican National Convention and delivered the Republican response to President Joe Biden's first joint congressional address. He's also visited New Hampshire, another early-voting presidential state, and delivered a speech at the Reagan Presidential Library, another frequent stop for Republicans eyeing the White House. A LEPAGE COMEBACK?Governor's races are often overlooked. But the general election contest in Maine is among a handful of governor's races that are likely to be competitive this year, along with Georgia, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin and Arizona.Tuesday's gubernatorial primaries were a mere formality, since the races were uncontested. But they locked in what promises to be a doozy of a general election between two longtime foes.Democratic incumbent Janet Mills is seeking a second term. She's a former district attorney, state lawmaker and Maine attorney general who frequently clashed with Republican Paul LePage when he was governor. Now LePage, who has described himself as "Trump before there was Trump," is challenging her.The contest will test the appeal of Trumpian candidates in New England. The Democratic Governors Association has already booked $5 million in TV ad time. That Mills and LePage are even competing against each other is somewhat of a surprise.LePage moved to Florida and swore off politics when he left office in 2019 following two raucous terms that often drew national attention for his indecorous remarks. But the draw of elected office was apparently too great. By 2020, he was back in Maine pledging to challenge his old nemesis.

					<strong class="dateline">WASHINGTON —</strong> </p>
<p>Donald Trump on Tuesday notched a significant victory in South Carolina, where his preferred candidate easily ousted five-term Rep. Tom Rice, the first Republican to be booted from office after voting to impeach the former president last year. But another high-profile GOP target of Trump in the state, Rep. Nancy Mace, managed to hold back a challenger.</p>
<p>Meanwhile, in Nevada, Trump's pick, Adam Laxalt, won his U.S. Senate primary, defeating a populist candidate who is arguably more representative of the Trump base.</p>
<p><!-- article/blocks/side-floater --></p>
<p><!-- article/blocks/side-floater --></p>
<p>Takeaways from the latest round of primary elections:</p>
<h2 class="body-h2">SPLIT DECISION IN SOUTH CAROLINA</h2>
<p>Rice and Mace have been objects of Trump's anger ever since a mob of his supporters stormed the U.S. Capitol to stop the certification of President Joe Biden's win.</p>
<p>Their transgressions? Mace stated on national TV that Trump's "entire legacy was wiped out" by the attack, while Rice became an apostate for joining a small group of Republicans who voted with Democrats in favor of Trump's second impeachment.</p>
<p>"He threw a temper tantrum that culminated with the sacking of the United States Capitol," Rice told NBC News on Monday. "It's a direct attack on the Constitution, and he should be held accountable."</p>
<p>Voters ultimately rendered different judgments on the duo, reflecting a split within the GOP about how to move forward from the Trump era. Rice's largely rural district is representative of Trump's America, where crossing the former president carries a steep cost. Even as Trump railed against both lawmakers, he chose to hold a rally in Rice's district earlier this year.</p>
<p>That's because Mace's district, which centers on Charleston, is full of the type of moderate suburban voters who fled the GOP under Trump. It is one of the few districts in an overall red state where Democrats have been even moderately competitive in congressional races.</p>
<p>The results demonstrate that the Trump factor can't be underestimated in solidly Republican territory, a potential warning sign for other Republicans, including Rep. Liz Cheney of Wyoming, who also voted to impeach Trump and has helped lead the House panel investigating the Jan. 6 attack. She's facing a competitive primary in August from a Trump-backed challenger.</p>
<p>Another notable factor in the Mace contest: It amounted to a proxy battle between Trump, who is contemplating a 2024 White House campaign, and former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley, who is also considering a run.</p>
<p>Trump backed former state Rep. Katie Arrington in the race, while Haley, a former South Carolina governor, effectively challenged Trump by campaigning with Mace.</p>
<p><strong><em>Video below: Katie Arrington concedes in South Carolina congressional race</em></strong></p>
<h2 class="body-h2">TRUMP, MCCONNELL ALIGN ON LAXALT IN NEVADA</h2>
<p>Trump and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell don't agree on much. One rare exception is Laxalt, who won Nevada's Republican Senate primary.</p>
<p>The two Republican leaders haven't been on speaking terms since December 2020, when McConnell acknowledged that Biden defeated Trump. But they both endorsed Laxalt, who defeated retired Army Capt. Sam Brown, a West Point graduate and Purple Heart recipient who ran an unexpectedly strong campaign as a conservative outsider.</p>
<p>The mutual support, which brought together the Trump and establishment wings of the party, demonstrates the intense focus Republican have placed on flipping the seat held by first-term Democratic Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto, who is considered among the most vulnerable senators.</p>
<h2 class="body-h2">TEXAS HOUSE SEAT FLIPS</h2>
<p>A once solidly Democratic district in South Texas will now be represented by a Republican after Mayra Flores won a special primary election to finish the term of former Democratic Rep. Filemon Vela, who resigned this year to become a lobbyist.</p>
<p>Flores, a GOP organizer who is the daughter of migrant workers, will only hold the seat for several months before the district is redrawn to be more favorable to Democrats. But her victory in the heavily Hispanic Rio Grande Valley is an ominous sign for Democrats.</p>
<p>They are not only losing ground in a region they long dominated, but Flores' success as a candidate also demonstrates that Republicans are making inroads with Hispanic voters.</p>
<p>Her win also has implications for Democrats' ambitions in Congress, denying House Speaker Nancy Pelosi an opportunity to add to her slim two-vote margin to pass legislation.</p>
<h2 class="body-h2">FROM SOUTH CAROLINA TO THE WHITE HOUSE?</h2>
<p>Also in South Carolina, Republican Tim Scott coasted to an easy and unopposed primary win Tuesday for what he says will be his last term in the Senate. But another state is also on his mind — the presidential proving ground of Iowa.</p>
<p>It's become an article of faith that there are no "accidental" trips to Iowa by ambitious politicians. And Scott, the Senate's sole Black Republican, has made several visits, including one last week.</p>
<p>He certainly has the money to contend. As he campaigned for reelection to the Senate, Scott amassed a jaw-dropping $42 million. That's more than double the $15.7 million average cost of a winning Senate campaign in the 2018 midterms. It's also more than enough to launch a Republican presidential campaign in 2024.</p>
<p>Even before his recent appearance at an Iowa Republican Party event, Scott has been raising his profile. He spoke at the 2020 Republican National Convention and delivered the Republican response to President Joe Biden's first joint congressional address. He's also visited New Hampshire, another early-voting presidential state, and delivered a speech at the Reagan Presidential Library, another frequent stop for Republicans eyeing the White House.</p>
<h2 class="body-h2">A LEPAGE COMEBACK?</h2>
<p>Governor's races are often overlooked. But the general election contest in Maine is among a handful of governor's races that are likely to be competitive this year, along with Georgia, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin and Arizona.</p>
<p>Tuesday's gubernatorial primaries were a mere formality, since the races were uncontested. But they locked in what promises to be a doozy of a general election between two longtime foes.</p>

More than a year after the bodies of Maggie Murdaugh and her son Paul were discovered on the prominent Lowcountry family's property in Colleton County, South Carolina, charges in the double homicide may be filed as soon as this week.On Tuesday, family members were told disgraced attorney Alex Murdaugh would be charged this week in the murder of his wife and son. Video above: Murdaugh murders investigation: 1 year later Family members were notified by the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division, as a courtesy, Tuesday morning. John Marvin Murdaugh, Alex Murdaugh's younger brother, told WCIV SLED agents did not tell the family what charges Murdaugh will face but they would be in connection to the double homicide.Alex Murdaugh told authorities from the onset he discovered the bodies of his wife and son after they were shot to death the night of June 7, 2021. Murdaugh was eventually charged with dozens of fraud-related crimes after allegations he stole millions of dollars from his clients and from the family of the former Murdaugh housekeeper, Gloria Satterfield, who died after a fall at the Murdaugh home.Alex Murdaugh's attorney Jim Griffin provided sister station WJCL the following statement:"We have not been advised by anyone associated with law enforcement or the Attorney General's office that Alex will be charged with murder. I am aware that SLED advised the family that they intend to seek murder indictments from a grand jury later this week. We won't have any comment until charges are actually brought against Alex."This is a developing story. Check back for updates.

A South Carolina nonprofit is chipping away barriers and teeing up fun for Upstate adults and children with disabilities.By tee time Monday, nearly a hundred people with disabilities arrived at Upstate Carolina Adaptive Golf's monthly gathering at Top Golf.Founder Brandon Worley said it's about having a ball while using the game of golf to learn real-life skills. "Golf, essentially it's a game of misses," said Worley. "You don't hit every shot perfect in golf, right? And just like in life, you're not going to wake up every day and every day's going to be a perfect day. Having that perseverance to overcome, keep going, adapt, and do whatever it takes to get the job done."Worley started this nonprofit four years ago, inviting now-Coach John Robinson to the first meeting."I said, 'wait a minute, there's no way I can hit a golf ball in my wheelchair.' He goes, 'trust me,'" said Robinson.Robinson has spina bifida. After several back surgeries, Robinson uses a wheelchair. That meeting, specialized machinery helped him stand on his own for the first time in years to hit the ball. ”I cried like a baby," he said. "And he thought something was wrong, thought I was hurting, and I told him 'no, it's tears of joy.'"Now a golf coach for the nonprofit, Robinson uses his disabilities to relate to the children and adults who want to learn. "To see some of the kids here getting in the same equipment brings happiness to my heart," he smiled.Robinson and Worley said their goal is to train golfers to adapt to their circumstances and learn independence and growing confidence. Watch the video above for the full story.

A man visiting Hilton Head Island in South Carolina with his family captured cellphone video of an alligator charging at a fisherman."My wife and three kids decided to go for a bike ride," said Micah Kimberlin, who recorded the video. "We came across a couple people standing and then we see an alligator...this gentleman is fishing kind of far away and it's headed directly towards him. That's when I started filming this alligator heading toward him." No one was injured. The alligator re-entered the pond shortly after charging on land. The South Carolina Department of Natural Resources said it is likely that the alligator associated humans with food."My opinion is it was probably an alligator that has been fed," said Morgan Hart, alligator project coordinator for SCDNR. "It has learned that people fishing there have given it food in the past. It is very hard to unteach an alligator that people mean food." Watch the video below Hart said if you're ever fishing in a pond with a gator, you should keep your distance."If you're seeing alligators, they're approaching you, they're interested in your bait, your line, your bobber, you should pull all that gear out, step away, give them time to move on," she said. Kimberlin's brother-in-law captured a photo of crews removing alligators from the pond where the incident happened.SCDNR wants to remind everyone that a fed gator is a dead gator."Once an alligator learns to approach people for food, that is a dangerous animal that has to be removed," Hart said.

<p>COLUMBIA, S.C. — There's a growing problem of people returning to prison after they're released. To prevent that, correction facilities implemented many rehabilitation programs.</p>
<p>One program getting recognition across the country allows incarcerated mothers to create music for their newborns to help keep them connected to their child while staying on the right path once they are released.</p>
<p>The Lullaby Project, developed by Carnegie Hall’s Weill Music Institute, pairs new and expecting parents and caregivers with professional artists to write and sing personal lullabies for their babies.</p>
<p>According to the program’s website, this can aid in childhood development and strengthens the bond between the parents and child.</p>
<p>Scripps national correspondent Tomas Hoppough was allowed to interview two incarcerated woman at the Camille Griffin Graham correctional Institute in Columbia, South Carolina. He was not allowed to reveal their faces, their full names or why they were incarcerated.</p>
<p>However, he was able to show you what motivates them to get on the right path and stay out of prison.</p>
<p>“My name is Ashley, I’m a mother of five.”</p>
<p>“I’m Brittany, I am a mother of two.”</p>
<p>Brittany and Ashely are two of four participants in the University of South Carolina’s inaugural session of the Lullaby Project partnered with South Carolina Department of Corrections. The women work with USC School of Music cello professor Claire Bryant.</p>
<p>"We're there in a place that literally does not have hope,” Bryant said. “That is a humbling experience, and it reminds me to remember why we play music and what the power of music can look like."</p>
<p>While Bryant, Ashley and Britany practice music in the visiting room, there are posters hung on the walls with lyrics to music that they wrote, which is something they’ve never before.</p>
<p>“It gives me joy and happiness even for just a little bit of time,” Ashley said. “You can take your mind off of everything that’s going on.”</p>
<p>“Next year, I’m going to be doing something like buy a cello and pay for some music lessons to be able to play it,” Brittany said.</p>
<p>The songs they are practicing are songs Brittany and Ashley wrote, inspired by their children.</p>
<p>“I had my son eight months before I got incarcerated,” Ashley said. “Then, I had my daughter three months ago while I was incarcerated.”</p>
<p>“I got incarcerated when I was 18 weeks pregnant,” Brittany said. “I just had my daughter a month ago. My song I wrote is called ‘My little shining stars.’ It means I’ll always love them no matter where I go.”</p>
<p>“My song is called ‘Mama’s world,’” Ashely said. “The meaning behind it is to let my children know that we’re through this right now, but it’s not going to be forever. I just want them to know they are loved, and how much they mean to me.”</p>
<p>Department of Corrections Director Bryan Stirling said programs like these matter because he believes it truly helps people turn their lives around.</p>
<p>"Most of the folks incarcerated in this state will be out in under five years,” Stirling said. “We have the lowest recidivism rate, or return back to prison rate in the country, and I believe it's because of all the programs we have here. Currently, it's at 19.2%."</p>
<p>The national average recidivism rate is 82% in the first 10 years of release.</p>
<p>Bryant has taken the songs both Brittany and Ashley wrote to USC, where her students and some professional musicians brought them to life and recorded it to give their newborns something from their mother to get through this moment when they’re not around</p>
<p>"So, it's like something that they can have for the rest of their lives. These babies are going to be able to hear and not know what they're going to be hearing,” Bryant said. “Five years down the line, they'll still have this song to look back on it's sort of like a memory that will exist forever.”</p>
<p>“This song will say ‘Hey, we got through this, and I was able to do this for you,’” Ashley said. “Especially since we are in a dark place.”</p>
<p>"Regardless of how bad your life is, or what kind of situation you're in you still have that unconditional love for your kid,” Brittany said. “That's what my song is about."</p>

A South Carolina woman is giving a peek into her relationship with a "momma bear" that she says she's recorded in photos and videos for about a decade.Susie, who did not want to give her last name, said her family's property adjoins a wildlife area, and judging from the images she's recorded, momma bear considers it her property too.The most recent video shows the adult female nursing her three cubs under a tree in her backyard."I took the video from our sunroom, zooming in with my cell phone," Susie said. She said the video was taken on May 20, and "momma bear and kids" stayed in her yard for about an hour and a half. "When she brings her family to our home, she will often take a long nap in the shade in the woods while her cubs climb trees, romp and wrestle in the backyard," Susie said. She claims this particular bear has been visiting her home for about a decade."These three cubs bring the count (of offspring) up to at least 10 cubs that we’ve had the privilege of watching her raise," Susie said. Susie says the photos on her phone of the mothering bear go back to 2017, "but she’s been coming around much longer than that."She chronicled the years from her photos and videos like this:In 2017-2018, she raised 1 cub In 2019-2020, she raised 2 cubs In 2021-2022, she raised quadruplets"And these triplets are her latest batch, probably born in January," Susie said.Susie said she has learned several lessons from the bear and her cubs through the years, some of them more painful than others."After she booted those two cubs out on their own in 2020, I was outside one evening, and could hear the cubs crying for her," she said. "It was utterly heartbreaking to hear them bellowing for her. I pray those cubs have fared well since."She's also learned that they have to take down their bird feeders when momma and the cubs come around, "or they will tear up the feeders to access the birdseed," she said.Susie says her house is evidently in momma’s regular territory, because she comes by every few days with the family, often lingering in the backyard. "Of course, we never know when she’ll show up, but when she does, if we’re outside--as my hubby was over Labor Day weekend when he was painting the house--we simply come inside until she and the kids mosey on," she said."I have to admit, it’s been awfully cute to watch the cubs rock on our deck rocking chairs and play on our deck lounge chairs," she said.Susie said she and her husband have had some close encounters with the momma bear over the years, and have a healthy respect for her. "She will charge if she believes we’re too close to the cubs," she said.Still, she describes the relationship she and her husband have with the bear:"This bear is such a good momma, and she’s been visiting our yard for so long, that we consider her and her family as almost a part of our family. In no way do we regard her or her cubs as pets (she could take us out with one swipe of her paw), but I worry about their safety and regularly keep momma and her cubs in my prayers."

<p>
A state agent testifying Wednesday in Alex Murdaugh's double murder trial meticulously reconstructed activity from his iPhone and the cellphones of his son and wife the night they were killed to try to link the disgraced South Carolina attorney to the shooting deaths. The key evidence for prosecutors is a video from the son's phone of a dog at the kennels near where Murdaugh's son Paul was killed with a shotgun and wife Maggie was shot several times with a rifle at the family's Colleton County hunting lodge on June 7, 2021.The timeline from prosecutors said the video was taken about five minutes before the killings. Two friends of Paul Murdaugh testified later Wednesday that they were certain they heard Alex, Paul and Maggie Murdaugh's voices on it. In interviews with police, Alex Murdaugh said he was never at the kennels that night.Later Wednesday, Murdaugh's defense used that same data to suggest that Murdaugh's phone and his wife's phone were not together when her iPhone recorded a final change in orientation between portrait and landscape mode, indicating it may have been tossed on the side of the road about a half-mile from the family's property.Murdaugh, 54, is standing trial on two counts of murder in the shootings of his 52-year-old wife and 22-year-old son. Murdaugh faces 30 years to life in prison if convicted.Court ended Wednesday with a cliffhanger. Judge Clifton Newman said he would rule Thursday morning on whether evidence of Murdaugh possibly stealing from clients and his family law firm could be admitted.Prosecutors opened the door by asking one of Paul Murdaugh's friends in the last question of the day if he knew anything about Alex Murdaugh “being confronted on the morning of June 7, 2021, about $792,000 of missing fees from his law firm?” The friend answered no.Prosecutors said fear that this theft was about to be exposed led Murdaugh to kill his wife and son to get sympathy and buy time to cover up the crimes. The defense said it's absurd to think a lawyer would believe the brutal deaths of his family would not bring more scrutiny into his life.State Law Enforcement Division Lt. Britt Dove returned to the witness stand Wednesday on the fifth day of testimony. He specializes in retrieving and analyzing cellphone data.Dove went over a trove of information from the cellphones of Alex Murdaugh, his wife and son. There were phone call logs and texts, steps recorded, apps asking for information, GPS locations, changes when the phone went from vertical portrait mode to horizontal landscape mode and back, and — key to the prosecution's case — when the camera was activated. The last time the camera on Paul Murdaugh's cellphone came on was 8:44:49 p.m. when it took a video for under a minute, Dove said.Someone appears in the video to be trying to get an image of a wagging dog's tail. Voices are heard trying to get the dog to stay still and figuring out if it had a chicken or a guinea in its mouth. The video was meant for Rogan Gibson, who testified Wednesday he considered the Murdaughs a second family. “Can you think of any circumstances that you can envision, knowing them as you do, where Alex would brutally murder Paul and Maggie," defense lawyer Jim Griffin asked Gibson.“Not that I can think of," he responded. Paul Murdaugh read the final text on his phone at about 8:48:59 p.m. and 36 seconds later another text came in that he never read. Maggie Murdaugh's phone showed she last read a text 28 seconds later, Dove testified.Alex Murdaugh told police the night of the killings and three days later that he was never at the kennels with his family, instead taking a short nap several hundred yards away before leaving to visit his ailing mother. Computer data from the SUV indicated he started the vehicle at about 9:06 p.m. and drove off.At nearly the same time, Alex Murdaugh's phone called his wife's phone, which indicated its display came on and there was an orientation change. Defense attorney Phillip Barber suggested to Dove that the person who killed Maggie Murdaugh had her phone in their hand and was surprised at the call, throwing it out the window.Dove said he didn't have enough information, such as how the phone could have been thrown, to agree or disagree. There were no more significant changes to Maggie Murdaugh's phone until it was recovered from the side of the road the next day, Dove said. But about five minutes after she read the final text, Maggie Murdaugh's data indicated her cellphone camera turned on for one second. Dove told prosecutors that can happen when an iPhone is trying to detect a face to see if it is the owner wanting to unlock the phone. The defense suggested a different scenario — that in a panic, she tried to use her phone camera to take a photo of someone.“And if the perpetrator or perpetrator responded by shooting at her, would that explain why it went off in one second and there was a bunch of orientation changes very shorty thereafter?" Barber asked.“There’s a lot of possibilities could happen not knowing how a person reacts," Dove said.Prosecutors also had Dove read a message sent to the family on the day she was killed. Maggie Murdaugh texted someone that she was worried about her husband's health, and after a doctor's appointment that day, she was heading back to the lodge in Colleton County instead of the family's house on Edisto Island."Alex wants me to come home," she texted.Alex Murdaugh also faces about 100 charges related to accusations of money laundering, stealing millions from clients and the family law firm, tax evasion and trying to get a man to fatally shoot him so his surviving son could collect a $10 million life insurance policy. He was being held in jail without bail on those counts before he was charged with murder.Since the killings, Murdaugh’s life has seen a stunningly fast downfall. His family dominated the legal system in tiny Hampton County for generations, both as prosecutors and private attorneys known for getting life-changing settlements for accidents and negligence cases.

<p>COLUMBIA, S.C. — Recruiting and retaining prison workers is a growing issue for the country. The Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts a 10% drop in prison staffing in the next 10 years.</p>
<p>One state is leading the way to help close the gap in the shortage of correction officers.</p>
<p>“We were in bad shape just like everyone else; it’s a national problem," said Bryan Stirling, the South Carolina Department of Corrections director. “The unique challenge corrections have is the environment they have to work in.”</p>
<p>There is a growing crisis in our correction facilities. The lack of correctional officers is hurting facilities all over the country, even on the federal level.</p>
<p>The Justice Department budgeted for nearly 21,000 full-time officers in 2020 but only had nearly 14,000 of those positions filled in 2021.</p>
<p>The Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts there will be about 33,000 officer openings on average each year for the next 10 years.</p>
<p>“If you don’t have the core function of safety, you can’t reach the basic needs these folks have without staff,” Stirling said. “So, we have to do things differently. So, what does that mean? More aggressive recruiting, more aggressive pay scale."</p>
<p>In South Carolina, the state is trying to fix staffing issues, because those who work here know this job is can be demanding. Each officer is responsible for the safety of the public, the inmates, and their fellow officers. Staffing shortages make this job that much harder. That is why South Carolina has taken several different approaches to try and fix this.</p>
<p>“It could be a tough job, but any job can be a tough job,” said Lt. Genice Cole, with retention at Broad River Institute in SCDC. “We have increased the training to feel more comfortable and feel more welcome. It was previously four weeks. With it being eight weeks, we give them the opportunity to be inside in the housing units with staff that are certified to give them a little more comfort.”</p>
<p>“I have been doing this for three months,” said Alex Hassam, a recruit for SCDC. “Honestly, training has been fantastic. Communication has been good. There’s a lot of people to walk you through things to help you gain confidence. You’re never truly alone and always having somebody who has your back that is very nearby.”</p>
<p>South Carolina recently increased pay for their officers. According to Stirling, an officer can make more than $50,000 in their first year. The BLS reported the pre-pandemic starting salary average was around $32,000 a year.</p>
<p>“We have more aggressive recruiting, and a more aggressive pay scale. We just had a historic pay raise here in South Carolina; other states are doing pay raises as well. Other departments that hire are union based, and you can be close to six figures starting off. We are up 150 officers this year just in six months due to the raises given through the legislature.”</p>
<p>South Carolina has also lowered the age minimum to be a correctional officer to 18, which Stirling said has helped fill vacancies.</p>
<p>“We’re going to pair them with experienced officers, with someone that’s older inside the prison. We’re not going to just put them in a dorm by themselves,” Stirling said.</p>
<p>This staffing shortage issue is expected to grow, but South Carolina hopes other states can learn from each other and implement the best tactic for their situation.</p>

Nikki Haley, the former South Carolina governor and United Nations ambassador, announced her candidacy for president on Tuesday, becoming the first major challenger to former President Donald Trump for the 2024 Republican nomination. The announcement, delivered in a video, marks an about-face for the ex-Trump Cabinet official, who said two years ago that she wouldn’t challenge her former boss for the White House in 2024. But she changed her mind in recent months, citing, among other things, the country’s economic troubles and the need for “generational change,” a nod to the 76-year-old Trump’s age.

THE DAY LATER IN THE YEAR. HAPPENING RIGHT NOW, THE JURY IN THE TRIAL OF ALEC MURDOCH IS DETERMINING WHETHER OR NOT THE DISGRACED LOW COUNTRY ATTORNEY KILLED HIS WIFE AND SON. THE JURY BEGAN DELIBERATIONS SHORTLY BEFORE 4:00 THIS AFTERNOON. IT COMES AFTER SIX WEEKS OF TESTIMONY AND WHAT SOME ARE CALLING SOUTH CAROLINA’S TRIAL OF THE CENTURY. OUR TAGGART HOUCK HAVE BEEN FOLLOWING THE TRIAL SINCE THE BEGINNING AND HE JOINS US LIVE OUTSIDE THE COURTHOUSE IN CARLTON COUNTY WITH WHAT WE’RE LEARNING. DAGEN. YEAH, WELL, THOSE DELIBERATIONS COULD LAST UNTIL 10:00 TONIGHT. MEDIA IS ADVISED TO STAY CLOSE BY. THERE’S A PRETTY LARGE PRESENCE HERE OUTSIDE THE COUNTY COURTHOUSE, BUT THIS IS ALL PART OF A BUSY DAY THAT ACTUALLY BEGAN WITH A CHANGE IN THE JURY. WE’RE GOING TO REPLACE THURSDAY BEGAN WITH THE REPLACEMENT OF A JUROR AFTER SHE ALLEGEDLY DISCUSSED THE CASE WITH TWO PEOPLE OUTSIDE THE TRIAL. AND WE DO APPRECIATE YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE IN CLOSING ARGUMENTS, THE DEFENSE CRITICIZED SLEDS INVESTIGATION AND SAID MURDOCK’S DRUG INDUCED PARANOIA WAS THE REASON HE LIED ABOUT BEING AT THE SCENE. MINUTES BEFORE THE MURDERS. HE LOT COMES. THAT’S WHAT ADDICTS DO. ADDICTS LIE. HE LIED BECAUSE HE HAD A CLOSET FULL OF SKELETONS THAT HE DIDN’T WANT ANY MORE ANYMORE. SCRUTINY ON HIM, BUT ADDED THAT DOESN’T MAKE HIM A KILLER. ON BEHALF OF ALEX, WE HAVE A BUSTER. HALF OF MAGGIE. YOU KNOW, HALF OF MY FRIEND PAUL. I RESPECTFULLY REQUEST YOU DO NOT COMPOUND A FAMILY TRAGEDY WITH ANOTHER. THANK YOU. IN REPLY, THE STATE CALLED THIS A COMMON SENSE CASE. HOW CAN YOU BELIEVE THEM WHEN THE ULTIMATE ISSUE WHEN THEY SAID THEY DIDN’T? WHEN THE ONLY THING THEY CORROBORATED FOR YOU THROUGHOUT THE INVESTIGATION, THROUGHOUT THIS TRIAL AND THROUGHOUT MR. WARD’S CROSS-EXAMINATION THAT HE’S A LIAR. AND THAT’S ALL YOU CAN JUDGE. PEOPLE ON. AND WHY WOULD HE LIE ABOUT WHERE HE WAS IF HE WERE INNOCENT? I THINK HE LOVED MAN. I THINK HE LOVED PAUL. BUT, YOU KNOW WHO HE LOVED MORE THAN THAT. YOU KNOW, HE LOVED MORE MEN. AND HE WAS GOING TO MAKE SURE THAT THAT LIFE WANTED TO MAKE SURE THAT LIFE. HE LOVED ALEX AND HE EXERCISED THIS GREATEST POWER OF CHOICE TO MAKE SURE THAT 15. SO IF ALL OF YOU WILL NOW GO TO THE JURY ROOM AROUND 350, THE JURY BEGAN DELIBERATIONS. AND WHILE IT’S NOT REALLY CLEAR WHEN A VERDICT COULD BE REACHED, IT HAS BECOMING CLEAR THAT THIS WILL NOT RUN INTO THE WEEKEND. THE JURY, BY THE WAY, IS NOT SEQUESTERED IN CUMBERLAND COUNTY, TAGGAR

Disgraced South Carolina attorney Alex Murdaugh was convicted of murder Thursday in the shooting deaths of his wife and son in a case that chronicled the unraveling of a powerful Southern family with tales of privilege, greed and addiction. The jury deliberated for less than three hours before finding Murdaugh guilty of two counts of murder at the end of a six-week trial that pulled back the curtain on the once-prominent lawyer’s fall from grace.Murdaugh, 54, faces 30 years to life in prison without parole. His sentencing has been scheduled for Friday morning.Through more than 75 witnesses and nearly 800 pieces of evidence, jurors heard about betrayed friends and clients, Murdaugh’s failed attempt to stage his own death in an insurance fraud scheme, a fatal boat crash in which his son was implicated, the housekeeper who died in a fall in the Murdaugh home, the grisly scene of the killings and Bubba, the chicken-snatching dog.In the end, Murdaugh’s fate appeared sealed by cellphone video taken by his son, who he called “Little Detective” for his knack for finding bottles of painkillers in his father’s belongings after the lawyer had sworn off the pills. Testimony culminated in Murdaugh’s appearance on the witness stand, when he admitted stealing millions from clients and lying to investigators about being at the dog kennels where the shootings took place but steadfastly maintained his innocence in the deaths of Maggie and Paul Murdaugh.“I did not kill Maggie, and I did not kill Paul. I would never hurt Maggie, and I would never hurt Paul — ever — under any circumstances,” Murdaugh said.Murdaugh’s 52-year-old wife was shot four or five times with a rifle and their 22-year-old son was shot twice with a shotgun at the kennels near at their rural Colleton County home on June 7, 2021.Prosecutors didn’t have the weapons used to kill the Murdaughs or other direct evidence like confessions or blood spatter. But they had a mountain of circumstantial evidence, led by a video locked on Paul Murdaugh’s cellphone for more than a year — video shot minutes before the killings that witnesses testified captured the voices of all three Murdaughs.Alex Murdaugh, 54, had told police repeatedly after the killings that he was not at the kennels and was instead napping before he went to visit his ailing mother that night. Murdaugh called 911 and said he discovered the bodies when he returned home. But in his testimony, Murdaugh admitted joining Maggie and Paul at the kennels, where he said he took a chicken away from a rowdy yellow Labrador named Bubba — whose name Murdaugh can be heard saying on the video — before heading back to the house shortly ahead of the fatal shootings.Murdaugh lied about being at the kennels for 20 months before taking the stand on the 23rd day of his trial. He blamed his decadeslong addiction to opioids for making him paranoid, creating a distrust of police. He said that once he went down that path, he felt trapped in the lie.“Oh, what a tangled web we weave. Once I told a lie — I told my family — I had to keep lying,” he testified.Prosecutor Creighton Waters grilled Murdaugh about what he repeatedly called the lawyer’s “new story” of what happened at the kennels, walking him moment by moment through the timeline and assailing his “fuzzy” memory of certain details, like his last words to his wife and son.A state agent also testified that markings on spent cartridges found around Maggie Murdaugh’s body matched markings on fired cartridges at a shooting range elsewhere on the property, though the defense said that kind of matching is an inexact science.Murdaugh comes from a family that dominated the local legal scene for decades. His father, grandfather and great-grandfather were the area’s elected prosecutors for more than 80 years and his family law firm grew to dozens of lawyers by suing railroads, corporations and other big businesses. The now-disbarred attorney admitted stealing millions of dollars from the family firm and clients, saying he needed the money to fund his drug habit. Before he was charged with murder, Murdaugh was in jail awaiting trial on about 100 other charges ranging from insurance fraud to tax evasion.Prosecutors told jurors that Murdaugh was afraid all of his misdeeds were about to be discovered, so he killed his wife and son to gain sympathy to buy time to cover his tracks.Murdaugh’s lawyers will almost certainly appeal the conviction based on the judge allowing evidence of the financial crimes, which they contend were unrelated to the killings and were used by prosecutors to smear Murdaugh’s reputation.

Aric Hutchinson is still trying to wrap his head around the idea that his wife is no longer here on Earth with him after the couple were involved in a car crash that proved fatal for her on their wedding night in South Carolina. Now, the groom has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the alleged drunk driver involved in the crash and a number of local establishments where the driver had been "bar hopping" throughout the day, according to a news release from an attorney representing Hutchinson and the lawsuit. While he doesn't remember the crash itself, Aric Hutchinson remembers one of the last things his new wife, Samantha Hutchinson, 34, said to him: "She wanted the night to never end," he said during an exclusive interview on "Good Morning America" on Friday.South Carolina authorities say Jamie Lee Komoroski, 25, drove her car into the newlywed couple’s golf-cart-style vehicle. The bride died of blunt force injuries, according to the Charleston County Coroner’s Office. Aric Hutchinson, his brother-in-law and the couple’s nephew were also injured in the crash, GMA reported."She (Komoroski) stole an amazing human being that should not have been taken," Aric Hutchinson said. The lawsuit, which is also an injury lawsuit filed by the brother-in-law and nephew, claims Komoroski visited the El Gallo Bar and Grill in Charleston before making her way to Folly Beach, where she began bar hopping on Center Street, with stops at several bars and restaurants.Video above: Husband attends paddle vigil for bride killedCNN has reached out to the other establishments named in the suit and is awaiting comment. "Despite being noticeably and visibly intoxicated at each of these establishments," the lawsuit states, "Jaime Komoroski continued to be served, provided, and/or allowed to consume additional alcohol at each of them."Chris Gramiccioni, an attorney representing Komoroski in the criminal case said he and his client "ask that there not be a rush to judgment.""We cannot fathom what the families are going through and offer our deepest sympathies," the statement said. "Our court system is founded upon principles of justice and mercy and that is where all facts will come to light.""The state grants restaurants and bars a license for the privilege to serve alcohol, and with that privilege comes a responsibility to the community to serve patrons responsibly and to deny service to individuals who are visibly intoxicated," Danny Dalton, Hutchinson’s attorney, said.Komoroski was a new employee of a local restaurant, Taco Boy, and her supervisor is accused of “organizing, arranging, and supervising an employee function/meeting knowing that excessive amounts of alcoholic beverages would be purchased for, served to, and consumed by the employees attending the function/meeting,” the lawsuit says."We can confirm with absolute certainty that Jamie Komoroski did not set foot in Taco Boy, nor did anyone on our team serve her alcohol at the restaurant," Taco Boy said in a statement in response to the lawsuit. "We have confirmed this by watching 16 hours of video footage from multiple cameras, staff interviews with everyone working that day, and by reviewing all sales receipts."Komoroski's blood alcohol level was over three times the legal limit at the time of the crash, according to a South Carolina Law Enforcement Division toxicology report. She is now charged with one count of reckless homicide and three counts of felony DUI resulting in great bodily harm, online court records show. Two broken legs, broken bones in his face, subsequent injuries and multiple surgeries later, Aric Hutchinson is finding comfort being back in the apartment the couple shared, he said.“It's hard but it's also nice, he said. "It's got Sam written all over the house."Komoroski remains in custody, jail records show."If this (lawsuit) stops one person from getting in their car while intoxicated, or helps someone have the courage to step up and stop that from happening, or helps an establishment really take a hard stand on over-serving people – that's something positive that can come out of out of this," Dalton said Wednesday.

A North Carolina man was arrested Thursday in connection with the kidnapping and murder of a 4-year-old girl in Lexington County, South Carolina, more than three decades ago, according to the Lexington County Sheriff's Office.Thomas Eric McDowell, 61, has been charged with murder, kidnapping and first-degree burglary in the disappearance and death of Jessica Gutierrez.Gutierrez disappeared from her home sometime after 11:30 p.m. on June 5, 1986, according to a missing person poster distributed by the sheriff's office and the FBI.Authorities later identified McDowell's fingerprint, according to a redacted arrest warrant. It's unclear where authorities found the fingerprint or when it was identified as belonging to McDowell. In the same warrant, authorities said McDowell was later identified in a photo lineup, and he told other people he had kidnapped and killed the girl. The sheriff's office said the girl was never seen again, and her body was never found.Lexington County Sheriff Jay Koon said after taking "a fresh look at the case" last year, special agents from the FBI and the state prosecutor's office visited the area. South Carolina law enforcement agents helped interview more than 125 people. A video featuring an emotional interview with Jessica's mother, Debra, was also circulated when the case was reopened. But it's unclear what development in the case led to McDowell's arrest, and a spokesperson for the sheriff, who provided the arrest warrants and other information, didn't supply an answer to this question when pressed by CNN."If you're not safe at home, where are you going to be safe?" asked the girl's mother, Debra Gutierrez, in an interview last year with law enforcement officials. The mother said she "had mental breakdowns" following her daughter's disappearance.McDowell was living in Lexington County in 1986. The Wake Forest Police Department arrested him at his home Thursday morning, about 20 miles north of Raleigh. He is being held in the Wake County Detention Center, according to the sheriff's office, which also said the case will be prosecuted by the South Carolina Attorney General's Office.CNN has contacted the South Carolina Attorney General's Office for additional information and is awaiting comment. At a hearing Friday afternoon in Raleigh, North Carolina, McDowell, represented by a public defender, was ordered held without bond until he is extradited to South Carolina.

<p><!-- article/blocks/side-floater --></p>
<p>Gutierrez disappeared from her home sometime after 11:30 p.m. on June 5, 1986, according to a missing person poster distributed by the sheriff's office and the FBI.</p>
<p>Authorities later identified McDowell's fingerprint, according to a redacted arrest warrant. It's unclear where authorities found the fingerprint or when it was identified as belonging to McDowell.</p>
<p>In the same warrant, authorities said McDowell was later identified in a photo lineup, and he told other people he had kidnapped and killed the girl.</p>
<p>The sheriff's office said the girl was never seen again, and her body was never found.</p>
<p>Lexington County Sheriff Jay Koon said after taking "a fresh look at the case" last year, special agents from the FBI and the state prosecutor's office visited the area. South Carolina law enforcement agents helped interview more than 125 people. A video featuring an emotional interview with Jessica's mother, Debra, was also circulated when the case was reopened.</p>
<p>But it's unclear what development in the case led to McDowell's arrest, and a spokesperson for the sheriff, who provided the arrest warrants and other information, didn't supply an answer to this question when pressed by CNN.</p>

<p>"If you're not safe at home, where are you going to be safe?" asked the girl's mother, Debra Gutierrez, in an interview last year with law enforcement officials. The mother said she "had mental breakdowns" following her daughter's disappearance.</p>
<p>McDowell was living in Lexington County in 1986. The Wake Forest Police Department arrested him at his home Thursday morning, about 20 miles north of Raleigh. He is being held in the Wake County Detention Center, according to the sheriff's office, which also said the case will be prosecuted by the <a href="https://twitter.com/AGAlanWilson/status/1479219908936450059?s=20" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">South Carolina Attorney General's Office</a>.</p>

<p>At a hearing Friday afternoon in Raleigh, North Carolina, McDowell, represented by a public defender, was ordered held without bond until he is extradited to South Carolina.</p>

<p>But his estate has been held up by 14 years of legal battles. </p>
<p>Now the South Carolina Supreme Court has ruled unanimously that Tomi Rae Hynie, a former partner of Brown's who claimed to be his wife, was not legally married to the singer due to her failure to annul a previous marriage, and therefore has no right to his estate. </p>
<p>Brown's union with Hynie has long been the center of the evolving legal troubles following his death at the age of 73 on Christmas Day 2006.</p>

A woman who was attacked by an alligator Thursday morning in Hilton Head, South Carolina, is alive thanks to some quick-thinking neighbors. According to the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office, the attack happened at around 8:15 a.m. on Rookery Way in Hilton Head Plantation.Deputies say the woman had been walking her dog next to a lagoon behind her home when an eight-foot-long alligator grabbed her legs.At that point, a neighbor heard the commotion and saw the woman being dragged into the water, according to the sheriff's office. The neighbor called for her husband who grabbed a shovel and beat the alligator until it released the victim."The victim’s legs were damaged; however, the full extent of her injuries is unknown, nor do we know if there were any other injuries to the victim," a Hilton Head Plantation (HHP) representative said in an email to residents. The victim was taken to Memorial Health in Savannah and was able to talk to her daughter while en route to the hospital. The South Carolina Department of Natural Resources captured and euthanized the alligator and will examine it to see if it was being fed. "We are very grateful for the quick thinking and brave neighbors who fought off the alligator and held onto the victim who was being pulled into the water by the alligator. We are also most grateful for the work of our Security Officers and HHI Fire and Rescue, who treated the victim at the scene and transported the victim to the hospital, SCDNR, for their quick response to remove the alligator and the Beaufort County Sherriff’s Deputies for their quick response and assistance," the HHP representative said. "Our thoughts and prayers go out to the victim and her family."HHP added that they believe the victim lived alone. As of Thursday afternoon, there was no information available on the victim's injuries or condition. Her dog was uninjured.“This is an unfortunate incident. We advise residents to be aware of their surroundings, especially if they are taking walks with small pets near lagoons that are habitats for alligators,” said Joheida Fister, Hilton Head Island Fire Rescue Deputy Chief. A longtime resident of Hilton Head Plantation, Neal Warner, told sister station WJCL he's seen alligators in the area before, but they never bothered anyone."I would see them pop into the water, they would never ever linger for us," Warner said.Warner told WJCL he is now afraid to walk his own dog in the area where the attack happened, despite the alligator being removed."It's just not worth it, there are other places to safely walk," Warner said. You may remember, there have been alligator attacks in Sun City and Sea Pines as well. Both of those incidents also involved someone walking their dog. Watch the video above for more on this story

<p>Nikki Haley, former President Donald Trump’s first U.N. ambassador and former governor of South Carolina, shared her thoughts on whether he will run for office again, and criticized him for his role in stoking the violent riot on the U.S. Capitol building.</p>
<p>"We need to acknowledge he let us down," Haley told<u><a class="Link" href="https://www.politico.com/interactives/2021/magazine-nikki-haleys-choice/?nname=playbook&amp;nid=0000014f-1646-d88f-a1cf-5f46b7bd0000&amp;nrid=0000014e-f109-dd93-ad7f-f90dc3060000&amp;nlid=630318"> Politico</a></u> magazine for an article published Friday. "He went down a path he shouldn't have, and we shouldn't have followed him, and we shouldn't have listened to him. And we can't let that ever happen again."</p>
<p>In an in-depth article in <u><a class="Link" href="https://www.politico.com/interactives/2021/magazine-nikki-haleys-choice/?nname=playbook&amp;nid=0000014f-1646-d88f-a1cf-5f46b7bd0000&amp;nrid=0000014e-f109-dd93-ad7f-f90dc3060000&amp;nlid=630318">Politico</a></u> magazine, Haley, who had remained in touch with former President Donald Trump after leaving her appointment and walked a fine line of being an ally and critic, said she had an emotional reaction to his speech on Jan. 6.</p>
<p>“Somebody is going to hear that, and bad things will happen,” Haley is quoted as saying about Trump’s comments specifically targeting former Vice President Mike Pence. “When I tell you I’m angry, it’s an understatement.”</p>
<p>Despite her reaction, Haley <u><a class="Link" href="https://www.politico.com/interactives/2021/magazine-nikki-haleys-choice/?nname=playbook&amp;nid=0000014f-1646-d88f-a1cf-5f46b7bd0000&amp;nrid=0000014e-f109-dd93-ad7f-f90dc3060000&amp;nlid=630318">said</a></u> she thought an impeachment “is a waste of time.”</p>
<p>When asked if Trump should be held accountable, Haley said she thought Trump is “going to find himself further and further isolated.”</p>
<p>“I think his business is suffering at this point. I think he’s lost any sort of political viability he was going to have. I think he’s lost his social media, which meant the world to him,” Haley <u><a class="Link" href="https://www.politico.com/interactives/2021/magazine-nikki-haleys-choice/?nname=playbook&amp;nid=0000014f-1646-d88f-a1cf-5f46b7bd0000&amp;nrid=0000014e-f109-dd93-ad7f-f90dc3060000&amp;nlid=630318">is quoted</a></u> as saying.</p>
<p>She also confidently said she doesn’t believe Trump will run again for president.</p>
<p>“I don’t think he’s going to be in the picture,” she told <u><a class="Link" href="https://www.politico.com/interactives/2021/magazine-nikki-haleys-choice/?nname=playbook&amp;nid=0000014f-1646-d88f-a1cf-5f46b7bd0000&amp;nrid=0000014e-f109-dd93-ad7f-f90dc3060000&amp;nlid=630318">Politico</a></u>.</p>
<p>Millions of Americans remain supportive of the former president, and statements from Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene, and a Mar-a-Lago visit from House leader Kevin McCarthy, indicate Trump will remain a figure within the party.</p>
<p>Haley admits that support and loyalty for Trump will not just go away now that he is no longer in office.</p>
<p>“Nor do I think the Republican Party is going to go back to the way it was before Donald Trump. I don’t think it should. I think what we need to do is take the good that he built, leave the bad that he did, and get back to a place where we can be a good, valuable, effective party,” Haley <u><a class="Link" href="https://www.politico.com/interactives/2021/magazine-nikki-haleys-choice/?nname=playbook&amp;nid=0000014f-1646-d88f-a1cf-5f46b7bd0000&amp;nrid=0000014e-f109-dd93-ad7f-f90dc3060000&amp;nlid=630318">said</a></u>. Adding, “at the same time, it’s bigger than the party. I hope our country can come together and figure out how we pull this back.”</p>
<p>Haley told the magazine she last talked to Trump in December, but did not push back on his baseless claims of widespread voter fraud, saying she believes the former president “genuinely, to his core, he believes he was wronged.”</p>

A lifeguard is recovering after he was bit by a shark while on duty on South Carolina's Hilton Head Island. The lifeguard was bitten around 11:45 a.m. Tuesday morning at the Palmetto Dunes Resort, according to Mike Wagner, operations manager of Shore Beach Services. Hilton Head Island Deputy Fire Chief Joheida Fister says the victim suffered several deep lacerations to the upper body, but was in stable condition.Crews transported the lifeguard to the airport so he could be flown to Savannah, Georgia, for treatment. Wagner says the injuries were non-life-threatening.Local shark expert, Chip Michalove of Outcast Sport Fishing, says the shark was likely a blacktip. The species is typically in shallow water this time of year, whipping through schools of menhaden, according to Michalove. Just last week, a surf instructor was bitten by a shark just south of Hilton Head on Georgia's Tybee Island.

<p>Nearly a full day after making landfall in Florida, Tropical Storm Elsa is still dumping heavy rainfall and bringing dangerous winds to the Southeast U.S.</p>
<p>As of Thursday morning at 5 a.m. ET, Elsa was located near the Georgia-South Carolina border with sustained winds of 40 mph. The <a class="Link" href="https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/graphics_at5.shtml?start#contents" target="_blank" rel="noopener">National Hurricane Center</a> (NHC) forecasts that the storm will continue to move northeast through the weekend, hugging the Eastern Seaboard up into Canada.</p>
<p>The NHC says Elsa poses a threat for "limited flash and urban flooding" across the Carolinas on Thursday. Tropical storm conditions are expected on the coasts of North Carolina throughout the day, and the Mid-Atlantic will see similar conditions in the region by Thursday night.</p>
<p>Later in the week, the system will dump heavy rainfall from the Mid-Atlantic into New England, which could lead to additional flooding.</p>
<p>Elsa made <a class="Link" href="https://www.wtxl.com/news/national/tropical-storm-elsa-kills-1-in-florida-injures-10-in-georgia-as-it-moves-up-east-coast" target="_blank" rel="noopener">landfall</a> in the "Big Bend" region of western Florida on Wednesday morning. Since then, officials have blamed the system for at least one death in Jacksonville. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis described that fatality as a "freak accident" on Thursday, saying that a tree fell on a moving car.</p>
<p>He added that Elsa had "as minimal impact as could have been anticipated" on the rest of the state.</p>
<p>In addition to the one fatality, a tornado spawned by Elsa injured another 10 people at an RV park on a Navy base in southern Georgia.</p>
<p>The system <a class="Link" href="https://www.wxyz.com/news/world/hurricane-elsa-races-toward-haiti-amid-fears-of-landslides" target="_blank" rel="noopener">killed three people in the Caribbean</a> earlier this week. </p>
<p>According to the Associated Press, one person died in St. Lucia. In the Dominican Republic, a 15-year-old boy and a 75-year-old woman died Saturday in separate events after walls collapsed on them.</p>
