New app aims to help detect kidney disease at home

BOSTON, Mass. — Often known as the silent killer, kidney disease impacts an estimated 35 million Americans.

Now, there's a new Smartphone app aiming to help break down barriers and diagnose patients early.

Paula LeClair is with a company called Healthy.io. A few weeks ago their app, "Minuteful Kidney: Home Urine Test," received FDA clearance. No trip to the doctor's office is needed.

"What we want to do is test everyone early and the earliest easiest way to do that is through the urine," LeClair said.

Instead, using a urine sample at home, people can run a screening test using their smartphone. Results usually appear in less than a minute.

"It’s not until late stages that they become symptomicatic, if they become, they are close to needing dialysis or a transplant," LeClair added.

There are broader implications to all this as well. People of color are four times more likely to have chronic kidney disease. The hope is that by breaking down barriers, especially for people who may not have access to a primary care provider, early detection can still be possible.

"It's such a large problem," she noted.

While this is the first app of its kind to be FDA approved for at-home kidney screenings, it's part of a growing list of FDA-approved mobile medical apps, including EKG readers, blood-pressure cuffs and pulse oximeters.

FDA approves first smartphone app to deliver doses of insulin

Your smartphone will now have the ability to deliver doses of insulin after the US Food and Drug Administration clears it.

On Thursday, Tandem Diabetes Care announced that the FDA had approved it to deliver insulin through its mobile app, t:connect.

“This FDA clearance further validates our commitment to innovation and the diabetes community by providing one of the most requested feature enhancements,” said John Sheridan, president and CEO of Tandem Diabetes Care, in a press release. “With the improvements in diabetes management provided by Tandem’s Control-IQ technology, giving a meal bolus is now the most common reason a person interacts with their pump, and the ability to do so using a smartphone app offers a convenient and discrete solution.”

The company said it would be offered in the United States for no additional cost to new t:slim X2 insulin pump customers.

"The updated t:connect mobile app is designed to offer t:slim X2 insulin pump users the ability to program and cancel bolus insulin requests through the convenience of their compatible smartphone," the company said.

If the iPhone 9 (SE 2) is truly small, we'd pay $999 for it

Recently, rumors about the iPhone 9 or iPhone SE 2 have been percolating, and there's a lot to be excited about. The phone would mark the first follow-up to the 2016 iPhone SE, which was a huge success for Apple. Part of its popularity was the SE's $399 price, making it the first "budget" iPhone. But a significant part of the appeal was how small it was. It's absolutely tiny by today's standards.

CNET editors Vanessa Hand Orellana and Patrick Holland really want the iPhone 9 to be small and they're worried that if it's not, many people (including them) won't buy it. With the iPhone XR and 11, Apple proved it can create phones packed with value. But hopefully the company can make a truly small and modern iPhone.
