A pilot has died during a single-jet crash at the Reno National Championship Air Races in Nevada on Sunday, according to officials. (Video above may be difficult for some people to watch.) The crash happened during the Jet Gold Race, according to the Reno Air Racing Association. Video shows the plane crash and immediately sparking a fire. The race was being livestreamed on the racing association's YouTube but has since been taken down. It was on lap three of six on outer pylon five, said Fred Telling, the CEO and president of the Reno Air Racing Association. The pilot who died was the only one on board when the plane crashed. It's unclear who the pilot was.All other pilots landed safely, Telling said. The races have been suspended due to the crash. The Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board are investigating.History of plane crashes at the racesIn 2011, 11 people died and another 70 people were seriously injured when a plane crashed into the grandstand at the Reno-Stead Airport at the 49th annual Reno National Championship Air Races. The National Transportation Safety Board report said the plane was pushed beyond its structural limits. Changes were then made to the races a year later for safety. In 2014, a wing malfunctioned before an experimental aircraft crashed and killed a retired Air Force pilot from San Jose. The pilot, Lee Behel, 64, died in the crash. No one else was injured. The races draw thousands of spectators every year to see the high-performance and experimental planes fly wingtip-to-wingtip as low as 50 feet off the ground. A baby girl, her parents and uncle who were kidnapped at gunpoint from their central California business two days ago were found dead Wednesday, the sheriff of Merced County said."Our worst fears have been confirmed," Sheriff Vern Warnke told reporters Wednesday night.Watch the surveillance video in the player above.A farmworker found the bodies close together in a Merced County orchard, he said. The announcement came after authorities released surveillance video of a man kidnapping 8-month-old Aroohi Dheri; her mother Jasleen Kaur, 27; father Jasdeep Singh, 36; and uncle Amandeep Singh, 39, on Monday.Authorities said they were taken by a convicted robber who tried to kill himself a day after the kidnappings."There's no words right now to describe the anger I feel and the senselessness of this incident," Warnke said. "I said it earlier: There's a special place in hell for this guy."Investigators, including crime lab technicians from the California Department of Justice, would be processing the crime scene through the night, Warnke said. He didn't immediately supply other details. The family members were taken from their business in Merced, a city of 86,000 people about 125 miles (200 kilometers) southeast of San Francisco in the San Joaquin Valley, California's agricultural heartland.Relatives of Jesus Salgado, 48, contacted authorities reporting that he had admitted to them he was involved with the kidnapping, Warnke told KFSN-TV on Tuesday. Salgado tried to take his own life before police arrived at a home in nearby Atwater, and he has since been hospitalized.Efforts to reach Salgado's family were unsuccessful Wednesday. The video released earlier Wednesday showed the suspect first walking by the property before talking to one of the men. Later, it shows him leading the men, who had their hands zip-tied behind their backs, into the back seat of Amandeep Singh's pickup truck. The suspect then went back to the trailer that served as the business office and led Jasdeep Singh, who was carrying her baby in her arms, out and into the truck before the suspect then drove away.Family members said nothing was stolen from the trucking company but that their relatives were all wearing jewelry. Warnke had said that after the kidnappings, an ATM card belonging to one of the victims was used in Atwater, about 9 miles (14 kilometers) north of Merced.Warnke said the kidnapper made no ransom demands in what he believes was a financially motivated crime.Relatives of the victims had earlier asked anyone who owns a convenience store or gas station in the area to check their surveillance cameras for images of the suspect or the family. They said they were worried the baby wasn't being fed because the family didn't have any baby food with them at the time of the kidnapping."Please help us out, come forward, so my family comes home safe," Sukhdeep Singh, a brother of the victims, said, his voice breaking. At the earlier news conference, Warnke said detectives had not been able to speak to Salgado, who has been under medical sedation in the hospital, but they were hoping to do so Wednesday with the help of doctors."I can tell you that every time he has even come near consciousness he has been violent," Warnke said.Salgado was previously convicted of first-degree robbery with the use of a firearm in Merced County, as well as attempted false imprisonment and an attempt to prevent or dissuade a victim or witness. He was sentenced to 11 years in state prison in that case, according to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation. He was released from prison in 2015 and discharged from parole three years later. He also has a conviction for possession of a controlled substance, the corrections agency said.Investigators have not found a link between Salgado and the family to show they knew each other before the kidnapping."As of right now, we believe it was random," Deputy Alexandra Britton said. "We don't have evidence to prove otherwise."Family members told KXTV-TV that the office for Unison Trucking Inc., the family's business, had only opened about a week earlier."My husband is very peaceful and calm person. We don't have any clue why they kidnapped them," said Jaspreet Caur, wife of the kidnapped uncle. The sheriff said detectives believe the kidnapper destroyed unspecified evidence in an attempt to cover his tracks. The sheriff's office said that firefighters on Monday found Amandeep Singh's truck on fire. Merced Police Department officers went to Amandeep Singh's home, where a family member tried to reach him and the couple. When they were not able to reach their family members, they called the Merced County Sheriff's office to report them missing, the office said.Merced County Undersheriff Corey Gibson said a farmer found a phone belonging to one of the victims on a street in Dos Palos, a town 30 miles (48 kilometers) southwest of Merced, and answered it when the family called it.Warnke said that while detectives have not established any motive or determined whether Salgado worked with any accomplices, he believes the suspect was driven by money and colluded with someone else.

<p>If Sheriff Aaron Appelhans has one message, it’s that change can happen anywhere.</p>
<p>Born in a big city, Appelhans never thought he’d go into law enforcement, but life has a way of changing directions when a local chief approached him about an officer job.</p>
<p>"Truth be told, I told him, I was like, 'I'm not a big fan of law enforcement. That's not something I think I really want to do,'" he laughed. </p>
<p>He ended up becoming something he loved. Ten years later, a new opportunity knocked—to become the Albany County Sheriff, and in turn, become Wyoming’s first-ever Black sheriff.</p>
<p>"I was like, well, there's an opportunity, you know, it's and I knew that the agency had a whole host of issues, some of which that I figured I could definitely deal with that," he said. </p>
<p>Although he’s had the position for about a year, he’s already made changes to the department.</p>
<p>"When you work within the system, you can see the things that it does well, you can see its flaws. You can see its loopholes, you can see all of its cracks," he said.</p>
<p>His main goal is to fix the culture. In a rural town in the middle of the country, he made the department more transparent in dealing with the public. He started making the path to drug and alcohol rehab for repeat offenders clearer and he focused on recruitment, specifically who he was recruiting.</p>
<p>"Law enforcement traditionally has a really terrible job in terms of recruitment. They recruit the same type of people over and over and over again. And it creates these situations you see across the country where maybe your police force doesn't necessarily represent the community that you serve," said Appelhans.</p>
<p>In less than a year, he’s filled 19 deputy positions with people of different backgrounds and ethnicities. Some of the people on the force haven’t liked the changes and left. Appelhans has even fired someone for past racist behavior, but he says all these are necessary steps toward cultural change.</p>
<p>"We're in the people business and we're not into excluding people, so we're going to be as inclusive as we possibly can."</p>
<p>He’s looking to hire three more people in the coming months, continuing to build his vision of a more inclusive, community-focused force. </p>
<p>As his story spreads of what he’s able to do in a small town, he wants to make it clear: change can happen in the most unlikely places, and anyone interesting in making that change shouldn’t be afraid to take that initial step.</p>
<p>"Sometimes you gotta be the first so that second, third and fourth can thrive as well," he said. "So, take that chance. Got to take that opportunity when it comes in and then go create that opportunity for yourself."</p>

Sonia Carmen Herok Stone was found dead in her California home on Oct. 15, 1981. Forty years later, the Monterey County Sheriff's Office has found her killer.Stone, 30 years old at the time, was a single mother, living alone with her young daughter. She worked for the Levi Strauss Company at the time of her death. The Sheriff's Office identified a suspect, Michael Scott Glazebrook, who was 25 years old at the time and Stone’s neighbor. The case went to trial in 1983 and resulted in a hung jury. As a result, The District Attorney’s Office decided not to retry the case. In 2020, detectives at the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office and Deputy District Attorney Matt L’Heureux re-examined the Stone case. They discovered that there were several pieces of evidence in the case file that could be tested using modern DNA technology. The items were sent to the Department of Justice DNA lab for testing. Detectives also got a search warrant for a new sample of Glazebrook’s DNA. They said they were able to obtain a new DNA profile easily because Glazebrook still lives and works in Monterey County. Earlier this month, the Sheriff's Office was informed that evidence from the Stone crime scene was a match to Glazebrook’s DNA profile. On Saturday night, detectives conducted surveillance at Glazebrook’s residence in the City of Seaside. At about 8 p.m., he drove away from his home. Glazebrook was stopped and taken into custody without incident. The now 65-year-old suspect was booked into the Monterey County Jail on a warrant for murder and his bail was set at $1 million. In honor of Stone, all detectives wore Levi's jeans during the operation to arrest Glazebrook.

The Hamilton County sheriff's cruiser and gun were stolen right out of her driveway.Sheriff Charmaine McGuffey said the car was locked and the alarm was set.According to a spokeswoman for the sheriff, the car was not damaged. How this even happened is still leaving a lot of people scratching their heads. The sheriff said she cannot explain it, and said the car is brand-new and uses a key fob.For community leaders, this is a prime example that crime can come knocking at anyone's door."If it could happen to the sheriff, it could happen to anybody. Let's be real," State Sen. Cecil Thomas said.Thomas has been pushing a strong message for people to stop leaving guns in their cars, making them easy to grab and go.Now, McGuffey is trying to figure out who stole her 9-millimeter service weapon and her county-issued vehicle Saturday morning. We talked with McGuffey by phone as she is in Arizona at a sheriff's convention this weekend."I had gone out to a barricaded individual out in Symmes Township. So, you know, when I got home, I locked up the car because it was just, yeah, I secured it in the vehicle and locked the car in my own driveway and got busy with something else I had to put my attention to," McGuffey said. "The next morning is when I discovered the vehicle had been stolen right out of my driveway."She said the cruiser was stolen in Columbia Tusculum and found in the Winton Terrace area on Saturday afternoon. The gun was gone, according to officials. McGuffey would not specify where the gun was stored in the car."I don't think by far, I'm the first police officer to have secured their weapon in their car, in their driveway. We have deputies that have shotguns and various things like that secured in their vehicles because they are subject to call-outs and things like that. So, I do not find that unusual. No, I don't," she said.Investigators are examining whether this may have been a key fob hacking situation, like we've reported on in the past, which allows crooks to get into cars."I hope the person who did this, whoever it was or whoever they are, will come to realize that this is not the way you should live and it's certainly not what you should do to your fellow people," McGuffey said. Now, another gun is on the streets.Thomas hopes it is found before it can be used to hurt someone."Guns are getting out here and one of the ways it's getting it, is these, breaking in cars," he said. The sheriff said a few of her personal items were stolen.McGuffey expects there will be protocol changes after this incident. She said this entire encounter makes her a human being and a victim of crime.Officials said the Hamilton County Sheriff's Office Criminal Investigation Section is handling the investigation.Thomas said when out in public places where you need to store your gun, you should put it in the trunk of your car and in a locked compartment, if possible. He also said trigger guard locks can make it difficult for anyone to use a gun they steal.
