Back-to-School photos: Dos and Don’ts

It’s almost time to send the kids back to school, and that means Facebook will soon be flooded with those cute back-to-school pictures. But what information should you exclude from those pictures? And how much information is too much?We spoke to experts who say any information we put out there gets stored somewhere, even if our accounts are set to private.“We love seeing them from our friends and family, but we're certainly creating a digital footprint every time we do that,” said Heather Starr Fiedler, professor of social media at Point Park University. "We're still creating this digital log of information that can be used for lots of different reasons by lots of different people."Starr Fiedler says to stay away from posting any identifying information like your child’s full name, the school they attend, their teacher’s name or classroom number. You should also avoid photos of your child wearing their school uniform, especially if the school’s logo is on it. Make sure your street sign, house number or your child’s bus number is not in the photo as well. "Those are the things that I think are the most dangerous that we want to try to avoid," Starr Fiedler added.In addition to scammers, in the most extreme cases, you could be putting your child in harm's way by unknowingly offering up sensitive information to child predators. “Child predators online are looking to build profiles for people to build relationships, and they can use that information at a later date to form a trusting relationship,” said Scott Argio, assistant special agent in charge at the FBI’s Pittsburgh office. Argio says privacy settings can help, but there is one thing to keep in mind. “The main thing about posting things on social media is, you're posting it for the world to see," Argio said.Starr Fiedler says parents should also be cautious of putting any information out there that would help someone document you or your child’s habits. Like hints about when your kids get picked up, dropped off or start their after-school activities. “That's telling them we're not with our children right now. We're somewhere else," she said. Starr Fiedler adds that once your child has their own social media accounts, make sure you have those important conversations about safety and privacy.

Netflix to crack down on password sharing in early 2023

If you share your Netflix password with others, the streaming service will be cracking down on it beginning early next year.

Netflix unveiled how they plan to do just that Tuesday during its earnings report, the Associated Press reported.

In March, CNN reported that the company began testing two features, "extra member" and "profile transfer," with its customers in Chile, Costa Rica, and Peru.

The "profile transfer" allows viewers to transfer their current profile to a new account, the Associated Press reported.

The company launched the "profile transfer" on Monday in the U.S.

How it'll work is you'll hover over your profile icon in the dropdown menu on the homepage, select “Transfer Profile," then continue following the instructions, the company said on its website.

“We’ve landed on a thoughtful approach to monetize account sharing, and we’ll begin rolling this out more broadly starting in early 2023,” the company said in a letter to shareholders, USA Today reported. “After listening to consumer feedback, we are going to offer the ability for borrowers to transfer their Netflix profile into their own account, and for sharers to manage their devices more easily and to create subaccounts (“extra member”) if they want to pay for family or friends.”

According to CNN, a fee to add the “extra member” option has not been announced, but in Costa Rica, consumers paid $3.

The company also announced during Tuesday's meeting that it gained 2.4 million subscribers in its third quarter, which is a bounce back after it lost 1.2 million customers during the first half of 2022, the Associated Press reported.

The news outlet reported that Netflix hopes they'll add 4.5 million subscribers during the October-December period.

Cincinnati's first permanent food truck park opening in the East End

EAST END, Ohio (WKRC) - An empty parking lot in the East End will soon become Cincinnati's first permanent food truck park.

With about 140 of them now operating in the Tri-State, supporters wanted to create a place they'd be available any time.

Cove Food Park will be open May through November starting Wednesday at Rivertowne Marina on Kellogg Avenue. The lot will have trucks that serve lunch and dinner along with late-night food when there are concerts at Riverbend.

Operators are also working on a license to sell local craft beer. Until then, it's BYOB.

Videos in deaths of Floyd, Arbery take psychological toll on black community

Experts say disturbing videos surrounding the recent deaths of two men will take a psychological toll on many in the black community.

The images of the moments leading up to the deaths of George Floyd and Ahmaud Arbery have spread widely.

A psychology professor we spoke to says seeing those videos is comparable in a lot of ways to trauma.

“What concerns me most about it is people don't realize the impact of that and being exposed to it,” said Dr. Rheeda Walker, a professor of psychology at the University of Houston and the author of the recently released book,

“The Unapologetic Guide to Black Mental Health.”

Echoing these concerns, Rwenshaun Miller says the distribution of these videos is piling on during an already stressful time. Miller is the founder of a nonprofit aimed at increasing awareness for black mental health, called

Eustress, Inc.

“Especially during the time of a pandemic, you would think that you know one of the main concerns would be us addressing the issues when it comes to the virus, but now we also still have to deal with the weight of being black in America,” said Miller.

The National Alliance on Mental Illness notes that African Americans are 10% more likely to be impacted by psychological stress. However, only about 30% of black Americans with a mental illness will get treatment each year.

Both Miller and Walker suggest writing as a form of coping. Miller says it's good to have someone you can trust to talk it out with. Walker even takes it a step further, saying you could join or contribute to advocacy groups to channel your emotions into positive efforts toward change. Both strongly suggest taking breaks from social media or the news.

“Watch what you consume. It's one thing for us to be aware of what's going on, but then it's another thing to be obsessed with it,” said Miller.

“We want to be informed, that's important. We want to know what's going on, but maybe take it in smaller doses or maybe turning things on later in the day rather than starting the day with this exposure,” said Walker.

Walker says it's important to pay attention to your feelings. Don't just ignore them. And even if you're a bit overwhelmed, it's okay to step back.

Netflix testing feature that seeks to prevent users from sharing passwords

LOS ANGELES, Calif. — The days of sharing your Netflix account with friends and extended family may be numbered. The streaming giant appears to be running a test cracking down on password sharing.

As first reported by The Streamable, a select number of Netflix users began receiving a message this week asking them to verify their accounts via email or text. If they can’t, they’re prompted to start their own account with a free 30-day trial.

“If you don’t live with the owner of this account, you need your own account to keep watching,” the message reads, according to screenshots. It’s not yet clear if users need to be on the same IP address to be considered in the same household.

Netflix has commented on the crackdown in a statement, saying, “This test is designed to help ensure that people using Netflix accounts are authorized to do so.”

Although it’s commonplace now to share passwords with others, especially during the pandemic, Netflix’s terms of use do explicitly say its service and any of its content “are for personal use and non-commercial use only and may not be shared with individuals beyond your household.”

Netflix has been the king of streaming for years now, but with more and more platforms popping up, customers are having to choose which services to keep paying for and the company is likely trying to retain its dominance in the market.

A survey conducted by research company Magid found about a third of subscribers to platforms like Netflix share their password with someone outside their household. With so many services to pay for, people often split the burden, each paying for a few and sharing their accounts with each other.

As for Netflix pricing, after a 30-day trial, you can pay $8.99 a month for the streamer’s “basic” plan, where only one screen can stream at any given time. The next plan, “standard,” costs $13.99 per month and Netflix can be streamed on two screens at a time. The company’s “premium” plan costs $17.99 a month and four screens can stream at the same time.

Judge expected to rule in Cincinnati homeless case on Monday

CINCINNATI (WKRC) - The fight between Cincinnati's homeless and the court will likely resume on Monday when a judge is expected to make a ruling on the latest move to ban homeless camps in all of Hamilton County.

The current camp in Over-The-Rhine has been home for almost two weeks. The latest motion to remove them comes after reports of drug use and public urination at the camp.

Within the past few weeks, a large number of Cincinnati's homeless have moved from one spot to the next after multiple court orders. From being banned on public property to the threat of removal from private property, the community waits for the next ruling.

"Not only are they trying to make it impossible for people to survive, but they're trying to tell each of us what we can do in our own spaces," Josh Spring of the homeless coalition said.

Last week, Hamilton County Prosecutor Joe Deters told 700 WLW's Bill Cunningham that he'd let the group at 13th and Republic Streets stay throughout the weekend.

"The Mayor (Cincinnati's John Cranley) asked me to give him a couple more days," Deters said. "I don't have a problem with that if they are actively trying to relocate these people on 13th and Republic. I don't have a problem with them but I don't make that call. The call is made by Judge Robert Ruhleman."

While the number of homeless camping out in the city has decreased, there are some who refuse to go to one of the man shelters in the city.

"I would never go to a shelter," Loa, a woman living at 13th and Republic, said. "That's where the insects, the body bugs and the people that really don't have the capacity to fend for themselves are. So they're really messed up emotionally and physically. The food, I wouldn't feed to a rat."

The previous ban was for public property in the county. The land at 13th and Republic is private but Deters says that it is a public nuisance that doesn't matter whether it's on public or private land.

Cincinnati Police's active shooter training saved lives in downtown shooting

LOWER PRICE HlLL, Ohio (WKRC) - At any moment, Cincinnati Police officers are ready to stop a shooter.

They train often at the Cincinnati Police Academy.

“All of the police officers that are out on the street for the city of Cincinnati have had active shooter training and that doesn’t stop after police recruit school. Every year, we are bringing these officers back,” Lt. Bruce Hoffbauer said.

That training helped stop an active shooter Thursday morning. Within minutes, four officers were at the Fifth Third building and were able to find and stop a man who was shooting at anyone he saw.

“What happened yesterday and the way the officers reacted, they fell right back on their training,“ Hoffbauer said. “So we are teaching our officers that they have to go directly into the gunfire to save the lives of innocent people."

Officer Steve Peponis is the physical fitness and defensive tactics instructor at the Cincinnati Police Academy. He said, “As soon as we hear that gunfire, that has to be kind of our 'Go' symbol," he said.

The training has changed over the years. Veteran officers remember when they used to wait before engaging a threat. Now, they are trained to go in immediately.

Peponis said, “It kind of goes against a lot of the tactics that we’ve trained for for our entire police careers when we are addressing an active shooter."

Hoffbauer added, "If we stop and we don’t aggressively go after the threat, more people could be injured or killed.“

The images of the people who were killed or hurt will stick with the officers, but the way they reacted proved that their training works.

“We’re human beings. Just as everyone running from that scene is scared, we're scared also," said Peponis. "I like to tell recruits that bravery isn't the absence of fear. Being brave is to be able to take some action despite that fear."

Hoffbauer said, "They saved lives because they reacted to their training, and that's what we want all of the officers to do."

The lieutenant also added that officers who did not respond directly to the building were still essential that day. Many had to slide into other roles to cover the rest of the city.
