VINNYTSIA, Ukraine (AP) — Ukrainian officials say Russian missiles that struck a city in central Ukraine killed at least 23 people and wounded more than 100 others, including children, while dozens were missing.

Officials say cruise missiles fired from a Russian submarine in the Black Sea struck a medical center, stores and residential buildings in Vinnytsia, a city southwest of Kyiv, the capital.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is accusing Russia of intentionally aiming missiles at civilians and repeating his call for Russia to be declared a state sponsor of terrorism.

One military analyst thinks Thursday's attack mirrors previous ones on residential areas that Moscow has launched "to try to pressure Kyiv to make some concessions."

Thus far, only six bodies have been identified, according to National Police Chief Ihor Klymenko.

Klymenko said 39 people are still missing.

According to Ukraine’s State Emergency Service, out of the 23 people reported dead, including three children under the age of 10.

The emergency service agency said 66 people were hospitalized, including five in critical condition and 34 who suffered severe injuries.

Russia has been banned from international gymnastics and curling events in response to its invasion of Ukraine.

The International Gymnastics Federation says Russian and Belarusian athletes or officials will not be allowed to participate in sanctioned competitions until further notice.

The World Curling Federation has banned Russia from its championships for the rest of the season.

Both sports had previously canceled events scheduled in Russia.

International sports organizers have scrambled to deal with the repercussions of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, which began shortly after the end of the Beijing Olympics.

The French soccer league suspended coverage of its league in Russia with broadcaster Match TV.

News of the sports ban comes after the International Olympic Committee recommended earlier this week that Russian and Belarusian athletes not be permitted to participate in international competitions due to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

On Tuesday, the International Skating Union announced they were banning Russian and Belarusian figure skaters from events.

Russian and Belarusian athletes were also booted from the Paralympics on Friday, Newsy reported.

Two ballet dancers for the National Opera of Ukraine are trading in their ballet slippers to take up arms to fight for the Ukrainian military.

Principal dancer Oleksii Potiomkin joined up with the armed forces and has been sharing pictures of himself on Instagram wearing camouflage, according to Vanity Fair Italy and Pointe Magazine.

The story of Potiomkin fighting for Ukraine after Russia launched an attack on the country last week went viral when Ukrainian-American writer Natalia Antonova posted about him on Twitter.

According to Ukrainian journalist Tetiana Danylenko and Oleksandra Matviichuk, the head of the Center for Civil Liberties in Ukraine, ballerina Lesya Vorotnyk has also joined the military to fight the Russian troops.
