As consumers tighten their wallets amid increasing inflation rates, a surprising find by the parent company of two popular affordably-priced restaurant chains in the U.S. has revealed that wallets for those making even more money might be tightening.

That's because, according to Dine Brands, sales during three months this year grew by some 6% to 8% for customers in households making more than $75,000 a year.

It's unclear how Dine Brands CEO John Peyton got that data when he presented it recently.

But he suggested the jump in sales was because "guests that often dine at more expensive restaurants are finding Applebee's and IHOP because of their well-known value position."

As CNN reported, Applebees and IHOP saw sales drop, with customers in households making under $50,000 per year.

Sales overall for both companies have seen slight increases for stores open at least a year.

Both restaurants have increased menu prices this year as the United States deals with staffing shortages in the industry coupled with increased inflation.

Peyton said, "at times like these when economics are tough for our guests, our brands have particular expertise."

A woman was killed and two others were injured when a Denny's sign fell on their car in Elizabethtown, Kentucky, authorities said.

The incident happened Thursday afternoon as the area was reportedly dealing with high winds.

A witness said the wind blew the Denny's sign from its post, causing it to crush the car in the parking lot. The front of the vehicle's car was smashed.

A 72-year-old woman inside the vehicle was rushed to a hospital in Louisville in critical condition. However, she was later pronounced dead.

The two other individuals inside the car are expected to survive.

Police are investigating the incident.

A spokesperson for Denny's released the following statement:

"Denny's is aware of the incident that took place at our Elizabethtown location on Thursday. Safety is our top priority, and we are working with the authorities to better understand what led to this situation. Our thoughts are with all of those involved."

A roadblock is on the way for one of the region’s most popular bike trails because a new bridge will take all summer to install. The Loveland Bike Trail will be closed at a distance from downtown that takes about one minute to walk. The bridge will be closed for most of March and will reopen, but will then close down again from May until October. “I don't think it's going to make too many people happy. The timing is not what I would call the best,” said Loveland resident Julie Dolbier.“That is very disappointing because that is the riding season,” said Diana Hodges-Batzka. “It just means we will be going to the other parts of this wonderful trail that Ohio has.”That’s the concern. The trail is important to downtown Loveland businesses. Now, people hitting the trail at Loveland can’t go north toward Morrow and Lebanon, which is the most popular route.Loveland City Manager David Kennedy said the Ohio Department of Natural Resource’s plan was to replace the bridge in January, but supply chain issues pushed it back to the summer.“They're doing the right thing, timing, it's not good. It's not good for our businesses, but I'm absolutely supportive of the project,” Kennedy said.Business owners are remaining optimistic.“You’re always tempted to think worse-case scenario, but I think, for the most part, if you’re committed to doing good work, people want to come and find you anyway,” said the owner of Narrow Path Brewing Company, Chad Powers.

If you've dined out during the pandemic, you've probably noticed your local restaurants are operating with reduced or even dramatically reduced staffing. The Omicron variant is adding to an already existing staffing problem for the restaurant industry.

"We knew that it just was one more wave, one big variant, one bad winter away from disaster for a lot of restaurants, and that reality is quickly settling in at bars and restaurants throughout the country," said Caroline Styne, co-founder of the Independent Restaurant Coalition.

With food prices going up, along with the cost of just about everything, fewer customers have also been dining in at restaurants around the country. All of those challenges add to the already huge problem with staffing shortages in the restaurant industry, and some of those businesses say they're on the brink of closing permanently.

"It could be the end of January. It could be into March or April. But, it's not very long," said Bret Csencsitz, managing partner at Gotham Bar and Grill.

Restaurant Business Magazine cites the research firm Placer.ai, that reports restaurant visits for the week of Dec. 20 were more than 10% lower than the same time in 2019. And the National Restaurant Association in November said 77% of restaurants reported not having enough employees.

Some of those lucky enough to have enough workers say they're now having to pay them even when they're closed because the demand for labor is so high.

"I have no business, but please come work for us and we'll pay you. You know that's not normal logic and business," said Michael Dorf, CEO of City Winery.

Businesses say the whiplash of COVID-19 surges are driving them into the ground, as owners struggle to keep their doors open. Industry advocates say these current problems will have an economic ripple effect throughout the country.

"The financial hit to the country is huge when you lose restaurants to the neighborhood, to the community, and to the job market in general," Styne said.

As Ohio restaurants plan to reopen later this month, one restaurant is using shower curtains to create barriers between tables as it prepares to open its dining room.

The Twisted Citrus restaurant in North Canton, Ohio, will be among the restaurants that will begin welcoming customers into its dining room after in-person dining was suspended in March.

The curtains are being used to divide tables where it’s not possible to separate them by 6 feet.

“They will be disinfected after each seating. It's obviously not an ideal situation, but we are doing our best to comply with requirements placed upon us so that we can eventually reopen and get our employees back to work,” the restaurant said.

On Thursday, Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine announced that indoor dining would be permitted on May 21. The governor called the reopening of dining rooms a “risk.”

“But it's also a risk if you don't move forward,” DeWine added. “We're on a dangerous road that has never been traveled before in Ohio and the danger is that we relax and stop taking precautions. All of us collectively control this. I ask you to take calculated risks and make good judgments. Continue social distancing, washing your hands, and wearing face coverings. If you aren't concerned with what happens to you, do it for others."

Ohio is requiring employees to wear face coverings and for businesses to conduct temperature screenings at the beginning of shifts.

FRANKFORT, Ky. — Gov. Andy Beshear gave an update Friday on COVID-19 cases and plans to reopen dining rooms across the commonwealth.

Watch a replay of the briefing in the player below:

Restaurants reopen Friday

Restaurants across Kentucky reopened at 33% dine-in capacity plus outdoor seating Friday. Restaurants have been instructed to limit parties to 10 or fewer guests, and to separate tables by at least six feet. Employees will be required to wear masks while interacting with customers.

The state also advises that restaurants use disposable menus, napkins, table cloths, disposable utensils and condiments when possible. Self-serve buffets and salad bars will also be closed if employees cannot offer buffet service.

Restaurants must also create mask policies for customers, which may include refusing to serve guests who aren't wearing a face mask while away from their table or around others.

For more guidelines for restaurants and customers, click here.

Beshear said bars will remain closed until July because it's harder to regulate social distancing inside bars than in restaurants, but bars can still operate as restaurants by offering food service at tables outside.

Additionally, the governor's restrictions on interstate travel expired Friday.

On Thursday, Beshear added new dates for reopening horse parks, auctions, large-group gatherings and more. See WCPO's timeline for the full list of event reopenings in Kentucky and around the Tri-State.

TIMELINE: Kentucky, Ohio and Indiana reopening plans

Voting in Kentucky's primary

Sec. of State Michael Adams unveiled a new web portal where Kentuckians can check their voter registration status and request absentee ballots for the primary elections.

There are four ways to vote in Kentucky: in-person on election day, June 23; in-person early voting before June 8; absentee by mail; and absentee ballots returned to your local elections board before election day.

Since the state is "not able" to mail ballots to everyone automatically, Sec. of State Michael Adams said those who want an absentee ballot to either mail back or return to local elections boards can visit GoVoteKy.com.

“It makes it easy to vote, and it makes it hard to cheat,” Adams said.

You can check your voter status and update your information at Elect.Ky.Gov. Both sites are mobile-friendly, Adams said.

The deadline to register to vote is Tuesday, May 26. The deadline to request a primary absentee ballot is June 15.

MORE: Kentucky gets in line with mail-in voting

Case numbers and testing

Beshear reported five new virus-related deaths Friday, and there have been 391 virus-related deaths among 8,426 total positive COVID-19 cases statewide. NKY Health reported 1,065 total local cases and 57 virus-related deaths as of Thursday.

More than 3,000 people have recovered from coronavirus, and more than 171,338 people have been tested so far. Beshear said though 40 virus-related deaths have been reported in just three days, the numbers continue to show a "plateauing" of cases.

A free drive-thru COVID-19 testing site will remain open in Erlanger at 25 Atlantic Ave this week. You can call 1-800-737-7900 to schedule an appointment.

For a complete list of coronavirus testing sites in Kentucky, click here.

Childcare reopening in June

Cabinet of Health and Family Services Sec. Eric Friedlander announced Thursday that in-home daycare will be able to open June 8, with center-based licensed childcare resuming June 15.

Friedlander said daycares would have to follow new guidelines, including staggering playground time, eliminating centerwide family events and field trips, and using centralized pick up/drop off locations to reduce exposure.

All adults and children over age 5 are asked to wear masks in childcare centers, Friedlander said.

For more guidelines on childcare and resources for parents, click here.

Ky. to distribute $300M in CARES funds

City and county governments across Kentucky can apply for part of $300 million in CARES Act funding for coronavirus response starting Thursday.

To apply, local governments with COVID-19-related expenses from March 1, 2020 to Dec. 30, 2020 must complete an application with expense documentation. These expenses can include personal protective equipment, food delivery to nursing homes and vulnerable populations, necessary telework and communications improvements, and others.

“Local governments have been instrumental in the fight against COVID-19 and are a lifeline in our local communities,” Beshar said.

Local governments must apply with the expense documentation on DLG’s website. Funding will be allocated to governments based on population size.

The restaurant industry has been one of the hardest hit in the last two months.

“The numbers that have come in so far about restaurant closures and restaurant job losses, have been nothing short of staggering,” said Sean Kennedy with the National Restaurant Association.

According to the National Restaurant Association, 8 million employees in the industry have lost their jobs. Since the pandemic began, that’s three times more jobs loss than other industry. In addition to job loss, total losses in revenue for restaurants stand at $80 billion with projections that could go up to $240 billion.

“It’s painful trying to manage this business,” said Ryan Fletter. “We are easily down 50% and I feel like we are enormously successful for being down only 50%. I have two restaurants and the other one is suffering a 90% loss.”

Fletter is the owner of Barolo Grill and Chow Morso Osteria in Denver. Like the 60% of restaurants around the country that are open, the establishments have been surviving on take-out orders for food. However, both have also been able to sell to-go cocktails, since Colorado began a temporary allowance for this at the end of March.

With no longer having dine-in service, selling liquor to-go with food has become a critical source of revenue.

“Everything is lifeline right now,” said Fletter. “You take that away and it would be like standing on top of our head while we are underwater.”

Colorado is not the only state to allow restaurants this additional stream of revenue. Around the country, 45 states have begun allowing restaurants and bars to now sell to-go cocktails and other liquor.

“That has actually been a huge revenue generator,” said Kennedy.

The National Restaurant Association believes the revenue stream has become a lifeline for the industry, but it is still not enough.

“We are really at our most dangerous point right now, and it is why we need a federal solution from congress if restaurants are going to survive into the fall,” explained Kennedy.

Kennedy and the National Restaurant Association have proposed stimulus package ideas for restaurants that include tax breaks and grant money for restaurants, but there has been little talk in Congress about it being part of the next stimulus package. For now, restaurants are relying on what has always kept them alive, their customers.

“We hope that everyone will continue to reach out to their local restaurant and participate in whatever program they are doing, whether it is food or beverages or both,” said Fletter. “It’s why we are alive.”

COVINGTON, Ky. — Kentucky's Supreme Court stopped two lower courts Friday from nullifying Gov. Andy Beshear's pandemic executive orders for now.

At a hearing that took up most of Thursday, Attorney General Daniel Cameron asked the Boone County Circuit Court for a temporary injunction on Beshear’s executive actions during the pandemic, including his latest order on masks in public. A Scott County court had already granted a similar injunction.

The court granted the injunction late Thursday to allow daycare ratios to increase from 10 children to 15 for every teacher, and for restaurants to allow social distancing at 3 feet back-to-back.

But both injunctions were stayed Friday by an order from the Kentucky Supreme Court, which means all of the executive orders, including Beshear's mask mandate, will stay in effect.

"Given the need for a clear and consistent statewide public health policy and recognizing that the Kentucky legislature has expressly given the Governor broad executive powers in a public health emergency, the Court orders a stay of all orders of injunctive relief until such time as the various orders are properly before the Court with a full record of any evidence and pleadings considered by the lower courts," the order reads.

Cameron's challenge would have allowed restaurants to distance tables only three feet apart if guests sat back-to-back, but some restaurant owners in Covington were not totally comfortable with the idea. Now, they are relying on city programs to help expand outdoor seating into the streets to be able to serve more customers.

Starting Friday, the parking area on Seventh Street in Covington’s Duveneck Square will be shut down every night from 6 - 11 p.m. so nearby restaurants nearby can set up tables and chairs as a way to make up for the 50% capacity limit and social distancing orders for indoor dining in Kentucky. Similarly, Roebling Point will be closed to traffic to provide more space for properly-distanced outdoor dining.

Bill Whitlow, owner and general manager of Rich’s Proper Food and Drink, welcomes the extra outdoor space since it means he can bring back extra staff.

“This area has been growing massively, so I think people are going to continue to come down here as they continue to feel comfortable, and with more tables we’ll have more reception,” he said.

Whitlow’s main goal is making sure customers feel comfortable enough to come out and dine.

“They ask about spacing. They call and ask what precautions we’re taking. People are scared, but people want to get out and normalize,” he said.

That’s why Whitlow said even if the challenge to the governor’s order is soon upheld, he’s not going to change a thing about the precautions at his restaurant unless he’s sure it is safe.

“So we’re going to continue to wear our masks,” he said. “We’re going to continue to have spacing six feet between tables.”

Josh Rhodes, project manager for Recover Covington, said the “out of the box” idea is all about the economic survival of these local businesses.

“Restaurants are pretty excited to have the additional space,” Rhodes said. “This is all about their survival.”

BECAME THE BACKDROP FOR REAL HEADLINES. >> THERE ARE SO MANY EXCITING THINGS THAT HAVE HAPPENED AT WALT DISNEY WORLD OVER THE YEARS, IT IS HARD TO PICK ONE. >> WE HAVE PICKED THE TOP FIVE. DISNEY WORLD’S FIRST FOOTNOTE IN HISTORY CAME TWO YEARS AFTER IT OPEN,ED NOVEMBER 17, 1973. >> PRESIDENT RICHARD NIXON WAS THERE SHORTLY AFTER WATERGATE AND WAS GIVING A SPEECH TO THE PRESS AT ONE OF THE BALLROOMS. THERE WAS A QUESTION AND ANSWER CTSEION AFTER AND HE BLURTED OUT -- >> I AM NOT A CROOK. >> AND THAT BECAME HUGE IN THE AMERICAN LEXICON AND A BIG POP CULTURE MOMENT. >> EVEN PEOPLE WHO KNOW NOTHING ABOUT RICHAR NDIXON PROBAYBL KNOW "I AM NOT A CROOK." MOST PEOE,PL HOWEVER, DO TNO REALIZE THAT WAS UTTERED ON THE GROUNDS O WALT DISNEY WORLD. >> PEOPLE HAVE GOTO TKNOW -- >> YEARS LATER, IT WAS THE BACKDROP FOR HEADLINES AGAIN, AND A BREAKUP THAT ROCKED ROCK ' ’N’ ROLL IN DECEMBER OF 1974, THE END OF THE BEATLES. >> THE WRITING WAS ALREADY ON THE WALL BY THE LATE 1960’S. >> BOB THOMPSON IS A POP CULTURE EXPERT AND PROFESSOR AT SYRACUSE UNIVERSITY. HE SAYS THE BREAKUP OF THE BEATLES UNRAVELED OVER A NUMBER OF YEARS, BUT BY DECEERMB OF 1970 FOUR, PAUL, GEORGE AND RINGO HAD ALL SIGNED THE PAPERWORK DISSOLVING THE PARTNERSP.HI >> AND THEY ONLY NEED ONE MORE SIGNATURE, JOHN LENNON. WHERE DOES HE HAPPEN TO BE WHEN THE DOCUMENTATIONS ARRIVE? THE POLYNESIAN RESORT IN NONE OTHER THAN DISNEY WORLD. SO WHILE DISNEY WORLD DIDN’T CAUSE THE BREAKUP OF THE BEATLES, THE OFFICIAL LAST CHAPTER IN THE BREAKUP OF THE BEATLES ACTUALLY HAPPENED WIINTH SIGHT OF THE MAGIC KINGDOM. >> CELEBRATIONS,OT N BREAKUPS, ARE MORE DISNEY’S STYLE, SO LET’S GET THE PARTY STARTEDITH W OUR NEXT TOP MOMENT FROM 1987. >> I AM GOING TO DISNEY WORLD. >> WORDS THAT HAVE NOW BEEN FIVE UTTERED BY EVERYONE FROM MI SS AMERICA TO REALY ITTV STARS. IT ALL BEGAN IN EARNEST WITH SUPER BOWL 21 MVP QUARTERBACK PHIL SIMMS AFTER THE NEW YORK GIANTS BEAT E BUTHFFALO BIS.LL >> THE STORY GOES HEAS W PAID, SOME REPORTS SAY $50,000, OTHERS $75,000. >> WHEN I HRDEA HIM SAY THAT, I THOUGHT THAT WAS SO COLD. -- SO COOL. YOU KNOW, DISNEY WORLD MEA ANS LOT TO NOT ONLY ME, BUT YOUR KIDS AND THE WHOLE WORLD. >> THAT VERY NEXT YEAR, AHEAOFD SUPER BOWL 22 IN 1988 DOUG WILLIAMS, QUARTERBACK FOR WASHINGT,ON D.C.’S TEAM, WAS APPROACHED. >> THE NIGHT BEFORE, ONE OF THE LADIES WHO WORKED FOR DISNEYT A THE TIME CAMTOE ME AND SAID, HEY, YOU KNOW, IF YOU WIN, YOU KNOW, YOU, WE WANT YOU TO YSA THIS. AFTER THE GAME, YOU KN,OW WALKING OFF THE GAME PEOPLE WAS AROUND ME. AND I HAD MY HELMET UP IN THE AIR. THE ONLY THING I WAS WORRIED ABOUT WAS THE FACT THAT WE WAS THE WORLD CHAMPION, AND NOTHING ELSE MATTERED, THEN I FELT SOMETHING HIT ME ON THE LEG. SHE WAS A SHT ORLADY. AND SHE SAID, HEY, DISNEY WORLD, DISNEY WORLD. AND I LOOKED DOWN, AND I JTUS TURNED AROUND AND SAID, HEY, I’M GOING TO DISNEY WORLD. >> IN 2020, DISNEY STEPPED BACK INTO THE SPORTS ARENA HELPING TO GIVE THE NBA A BUBBLE TO PLAY THEIR ASSEON AMID THE CODVI PANDEMIC. >> HAD WE KNOWN WT WHAWEREE ASKED TO DO AT THE TIME, I AM NOT SO SURE WE WOULD HAVE SAID WE COULD DO IT BECAUSEHE TREAS W SO MUCH UNKNOWN. WE DIDN’T EVEN KNOW AT THAT TIME -- OR NO ONE DID -- HOW THE VIRUS WAS TRANSMITTED. >> FROM JULY THROUGH OCTOBER, 22 NBA TEAMS PLAYERS, COACHES AND STAFF LIVED, WORKED AND PLEDAY AT DISNEY WORLD’S WIDE WORLD OF SPORTS, COMPLETING THE 2019-2020 REGULAR SEASON, THE NBA PLAYOFFS AND THE CHAMPIONSHIP GAME. >> THE SEASON IS OVER, THIS HISTORIC CHAMPIONSHIP. >> THE SEASON CONCLUDED WITH ZERO CASES OF COVID-19 IN THE BUBBLE. FARON KELLEY IS THE VICE PRESIDENT OF DISNEY SPORTS. >> TREHE WAS A DOCUMENTARYN O ABOUT THE DAY SPORTS STOPPED. AND I WATCHED IT, AND IT HAD FOOTAGE FROM THE BUBBLE D ATAN WE DID HERE. AND AT THAT MOMENT, IT HIT ME THAT WE HAD REALLY -- WERE PART OF HISTORY. >> DISNEY’S NEXT DEFINING POP-CULTURE MOMENT HAS TO DO WITH A PRINCESS. NOT THE ONE FROM THIS CAST BLEUT A REAL-LIFE PRINCESS, POSSIBLY THE MOST FAMOUS WOMAN IN THE WORLD AT THE TIME. >> IN 1993, DIANA, PRINCESS DIANA BROUGHT HER TWO BOYS FOR THEIR FIRST VISIT TO THE UNITED STAT,ES AND OF COURSE, THEY WTEN TO DISNEY WORLD AS A FAMILY, THE THREE OF THEM. >> PRINCE WILLIAM WAS 11 AND HARRY WAS ONLY 8. THE INTERNATIONAL PAPARAZZI AT THE TIME, ANXIOUS TO GET A PICTURE OF THE ROYALS WHO WERE AT THE PARK SSLE THAN A ARYE AFTER PRINCESS DIANA AND PRINCE CHARLES ANNOUNCED THEIR SEPARATION. >> OTHER PAPERS ARE SPECULATING >> THE BUZZ AROUND THEIR VISIT, DOMINATED THE LOCAL NEWS TOO BACK THEN. >> IT WAS REALLY QUITE A THRILL. I>>T MADE A BIG IMPACT ON WALT DISNEY WORLD BECAUSE PEOPLE ALL OVER THE WORLD SAY IF THEY CAN HAVE SUCH A GOOD TIME, I WOULD GO THERE TOO. >> OF ALL THE FAMOUS VISITS TO DISNEY AND MOMENTS THAT HAVE UNFOLDED ALONG MAIN STREET, THERE SEEMS TO BE ONE THAT PEOP RLEEMEMBER BEST, THR EIOWN. >> MILLIONS OF IMPORNTTA EVENTS HAVE HAPPENED OVER THE PAST 50 YEARS AT DIEYSN WOR,LD BUT THE MAIN EVENTS WERE NOT RECORDED. THEY ARE EVENTS YOU HEAV TO LOOK INTO PEOPLE’S PHOTO ALBUMS. YOU HAVE TO TALK TO PEOPLE ABOUT THEIR MEMORIES. A BIG STORY HAPPENS AT DISNEY WORLD EVYER DAYNOT, THE STORIES THEY GET REPORTED. FOR SOME PEOPLE THAT TRIP TO DISNEY WORLD, IT IS THE BIGGEST, SOMETIMES HAPPIEST MEMORY OF THEIR LIFE. >> THAT IS WHAT 50 YEARS OF MAGIC IS ALL ABO

The first day of fall is just one week away and restaurants are preparing to take another hit.

“A lot of us are going into these months thinking, you know, how many more days can I survive until I have to close my restaurant?” said Kevin Boehm, a co-founder of the Boka Restaurant Group, an independent restaurant coalition.

Boehm is also a restaurant owner in Chicago, where COVID-19 restrictions have slashed indoor capacity. And he says outdoor seating won't be possible much longer.

The National Restaurant Association surveyed owners around the country. About three quarters say they're using patio space right now and hope to continue doing so for a least a few more weeks.

Outdoor dining is bringing in nearly half of their daily sales but keeping customers outside will soon get more costly.

“Equipment for outdoor dining, especially when it gets cold, get expensive, be it a tent for a parking lot, be it heaters or anything like that, that starts adding up in costs,” said Mike Whatley, VP of State and Local Affairs at the National Restaurant Association.

The association wants local governments to start grant programs for buying that equipment to keep temporary regulations in place that allow for more outdoor service.

The coalition hopes to see increased indoor capacity for cooler months. They're also lobbying for Congress to pass the Restaurants Act, which would create a $120 billion grant program for independent restaurants.

Boehm says there could be rolling closures through the winter.

“By the time we get to next summer, we're going to be looking at a much smaller array of restaurants, a lot less choices, a lot more chains, and the independent restaurant is going to be an endangered species,” said Boehm.

The National Restaurant Association says owners that are innovative are the ones that will make it through this crisis.

North High Brewing in Hyde Park Square officially opened its doors to business last Friday. The successful turnout amid a pandemic was just one surprise, and the number of job applications, yet another."Our staff is very small and the amount of applicants we got was overwhelmingly large, so it was very hard to pick the staff that we picked," General Manager Ryan Peirce said.A sign of the times, well over 100 applications for this 13 employee business."There are people that have been laid off all over Cincinnati, not even in the restaurant industry that have applied, and I even hired some of them," Peirce said. The pandemic has wreaked havoc on the restaurant community for almost a year now.According to preliminary data by the department of job and family services, Ohio's Leisure and Hospitality Industry lost 9,200 jobs in December and about 125,000 over the past year.Like North High Brewing, Lucy Blue Pizza in Anderson Township is also new, opening just three weeks ago.Owner Jim Thompson is happy Gov. Dewine recently moved curfew back to 11 o'clock."My business is based on late night," Thompson said.Like so many businesses, he had to close his two downtown locations when the pandemic first hit. He's finding more success in the suburbs."Out here in Anderson I knew there was lots of families," Thompson said. "We have had great success with people calling in and picking up food, it's been beyond our expectations."

Video above: San Francisco businesses check for vaccinationFor a moment in late spring and early summer, it seemed that restaurant operators were starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel. The COVID-19 vaccines were publicly available, and more Americans were getting the shot. States and cities eased their pandemic restrictions, including mask mandates and capacity limitations for indoor dining. People started making more reservations, and sales spiked. But that moment has passed. Now, with COVID-19 cases surging once again as the delta variant of the coronavirus rampages largely through the unvaccinated, restaurants are wondering what's ahead. So far, the sector is still looking good, but growth is softening. According to the Census Bureau sales at bars and restaurants grew 1.7% from June to July. That growth is slower than from May to June when sales grew 2.4%.Some restaurant owners are starting to see disruptions in the form of slowing sales, no-shows, nervous guests and supply chain hiccups. Some wonder when they can start to go back to normal, how bad things will get, and if they'll be able to pull through. Sales drop and people mask upNya Marshall's Detroit restaurant, Ivy Kitchen, had been open about six months when COVID-19 hit. After a rough year, she finally felt like the situation was starting to look up in the spring."Things were improving," she said. "People were coming back out." Marshall was finally able to start seeing momentum around the restaurant. The local community was "really embracing who we are," she said. But about six weeks ago, things took a turn, she said. Ivy Kitchen's sales are down about 24% since that time, she said."The delta variant is unnerving to people," she said. She's noticed that customers are once again wearing masks indoors, even though fully vaccinated people are not currently required by law to do so in Michigan. Some patrons have also asked to remain socially distant.Marshall is worried about the possibility of another shutdown. "I have fear of a shutdown every single day," she said. "I'm pretty sure we will not survive another shutdown," she said. "We barely survived this last one."More no-shows and requests for outdoor diningLaurie Thomas, executive director of the Golden Gate Restaurant Association and owner of San Francisco restaurants Rose's Cafe and Terzo, said that she's noticed a rise in no-shows, or customers who make reservations but don't show up or cancel.During the first weekend in August, after San Francisco reinstated its mask mandate due to rising infections, "we were running like 15% to 20% no-shows, which is very disappointing," she said. Typically, that figure is about 5% to 10%.And "we started to see reservations shift drastically to outside," she added.Soon after California lifted its mask mandate for vaccinated individuals in June, reservations "switched back to inside because unfortunately, our summer in San Francisco was cold and foggy," Thomas said. But in the first two weeks of August, "we started to see ... a marked shift outside again."Ideally, "we want people to sit everywhere," she said. "Because in order for a restaurant to survive, we need to be fully booked."New requirements started in the city on Friday. Now, people who want to eat indoors must show proof that they are fully vaccinated.Thomas is supportive of the vaccine mandate. If customers are not vaccinated, "it's not as safe for our employees," she said. But, she added, "I'm very worried that we're going to have that ... are going to be surprised" by the rule. "And that's not what we want."Reopening plans on hold and supply chain complications Steve Sarver owns a small chain of soup and salad spots called Ladle & Leaf. Going into the pandemic, he had eight locations open in downtown San Francisco, which primarily catered to the office crowd. But now, with a growing number of companies putting off return-to-work plans, only two of those locations are open for business, and one is closed permanently.A month or so ago, Sarver had hoped to open the remaining five in September. Now, he's not sure. "It's very hard for me to predict what our opening plan will be," he said. "It's hard to predict when people will want to return to the financial district."Dick's Drive-In, a small Seattle chain of quick-service restaurants, is in a different situation. Dick's mostly serves customers who take their orders to-go. But the surge in COVID-19 infections is still having an impact on Dick's because it's disrupting the company's supply chain.Watch video above: Indoor vaccine mandate begins in NYC"This week it's straws, last week it was salt, a couple weeks ago it was mustard," president Jasmine Donovan said in a recent interview. Each disruption poses a unique challenge. On one occasion, Donovan said, a major distributor shut down while quarantining employees after someone tested positive. Donovan's team had to send a van to pick up the products. Sometimes items are slow to come because of labor shortages along the supply chain."It's just a mad scramble every day to make sure we have what we need to serve our customers," she said. "Our people are under a lot of stress. And we just really appreciate everyone's patience and understanding."

She's noticed that customers are once again wearing masks indoors, even though fully vaccinated people are not currently required by law to do so in Michigan. Some patrons have also asked to remain socially distant.

Marshall is worried about the possibility of another shutdown. "I have fear of a shutdown every single day," she said. "I'm pretty sure we will not survive another shutdown," she said. "We barely survived this last one."

More no-shows and requests for outdoor dining

Laurie Thomas, executive director of the Golden Gate Restaurant Association and owner of San Francisco restaurants Rose's Cafe and Terzo, said that she's noticed a rise in no-shows, or customers who make reservations but don't show up or cancel.

During the first weekend in August, after San Francisco reinstated its mask mandate due to rising infections, "we were running like 15% to 20% no-shows, which is very disappointing," she said. Typically, that figure is about 5% to 10%.

And "we started to see reservations shift drastically to outside," she added.

Soon after California lifted its mask mandate for vaccinated individuals in June, reservations "switched back to inside because unfortunately, our summer in San Francisco was cold and foggy," Thomas said. But in the first two weeks of August, "we started to see ... a marked shift outside again."

Ideally, "we want people to sit everywhere," she said. "Because in order for a restaurant to survive, we need to be fully booked."

New requirements started in the city on Friday. Now, people who want to eat indoors must show proof that they are fully vaccinated.

Thomas is supportive of the vaccine mandate. If customers are not vaccinated, "it's not as safe for our employees," she said. But, she added, "I'm very worried that we're going to have [customers] that ... are going to be surprised" by the rule. "And that's not what we want."

Reopening plans on hold and supply chain complications

Steve Sarver owns a small chain of soup and salad spots called Ladle & Leaf. Going into the pandemic, he had eight locations open in downtown San Francisco, which primarily catered to the office crowd. But now, with a growing number of companies putting off return-to-work plans, only two of those locations are open for business, and one is closed permanently.

A month or so ago, Sarver had hoped to open the remaining five in September. Now, he's not sure. "It's very hard for me to predict what our opening plan will be," he said. "It's hard to predict when people will want to return to the financial district."

Dick's Drive-In, a small Seattle chain of quick-service restaurants, is in a different situation. Dick's mostly serves customers who take their orders to-go. But the surge in COVID-19 infections is still having an impact on Dick's because it's disrupting the company's supply chain.

Watch video above: Indoor vaccine mandate begins in NYC

"This week it's straws, last week it was salt, a couple weeks ago it was mustard," president Jasmine Donovan said in a recent interview.

Each disruption poses a unique challenge. On one occasion, Donovan said, a major distributor shut down while quarantining employees after someone tested positive. Donovan's team had to send a van to pick up the products. Sometimes items are slow to come because of labor shortages along the supply chain.

"It's just a mad scramble every day to make sure we have what we need to serve our customers," she said. "Our people are under a lot of stress. And we just really appreciate everyone's patience and understanding."

Giannis Antetokounmpo ended one of the greatest NBA Finals ever with 50 points and a championship Milwaukee waited 50 years to win again.Antetokounmpo had 50 points, 14 rebounds and five blocked shots as the Bucks beat the Phoenix Suns 105-98 on Tuesday night to win the series 4-2.It was the third game this series with at least 40 points and 10 rebounds for Antetokounmpo, a dominant, debut finals performance that takes its place among some of the game's greatest. He shot 16 for 25 from the field and made an unbelievable 17-of-19 free throws — a spectacular performance for any shooter, let alone one who was hitting just 55.6% in the postseason and was ridiculed for it at times. He hopped around the court waving his arms with 20 seconds remaining to encourage fans to cheer, but it was way too late for that.Their voices had been booming inside and outside for hours by then, having waited 50 years to celebrate a winner after Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Oscar Robertson led the Bucks to the championship in 1971. In a season played largely without fans, the Bucks had 65,000 of them packed into the Deer District outside, a wild party that figured to last deep into the Midwestern night. Confetti rained down inside as fans chanted "Bucks in 6! Bucks in 6!" — which began as a hopeful boast by a former player turning out to be a prophetic rallying cry.The Bucks became the fifth team to win the NBA Finals after trailing 2-0 and the first to do it by winning the next four games since Miami against Dallas in 2006.Chris Paul scored 26 points to end his first NBA Finals appearance in his 16th season. Devin Booker added 19 points but shot just 8 for 22 and missed all seven 3-pointers after scoring 40 points in each of the last two games. The teams that came into the NBA together as expansion clubs in 1968 delivered a fine finals, with the last three games all in the balance deep into the fourth quarter. The Bucks won them largely because of Antetokounmpo, a two-time MVP in the regular season who raised his game even higher in the finals and was voted the NBA Finals MVP.The Larry O'Brien trophy was presented to the Bucks by NBA Commissioner Adam Silver. it's my customers that I owe this to. They bring out the best in me. It's them, I couldn't do it without your help. It gives you hope that you know, we're turning the corner and that they were kind of on the back nine of this and hopefully we can get back to normal soon. This is what my people need right now. I have single moms that work here. I have high school kids that work here. You know, people with families and mortgages and car payments. So it was very welcome. We now know what it really does mean to the community and how much it is helping these places to survive and thrive during this time here at stitch, we celebrate the ways everyday people are making this country a kinder place to live. One incredible story at a time. One of the industries hardest hit by the pandemic was the service industry across the country. Good Samaritans have been stepping up and supporting their local restaurants in any way they can. Here are a few stories of patrons that are making a difference in their communities. One tip at a time in our first story, a beloved Taco Bell employee received the tip of a lifetime jodi cco, affectionately known as Taco Bell joe was given a tip he'll never forget. It's my customers that I owe this to. They bring out the best in me. It's them. I couldn't do it without your help. He's made such an impact that the community gifted Joe a check for over $6,000 Tricia Philly B started a Facebook group for local foodies to share news about their favorite restaurants during the pandemic. Then they decided to take it a step further. Members of the group voted on their favorite employee to help me. What won by a landslide. I'm gonna do my best to live up to it. It's a light a little candle in every heart Of every person that I meet, Joe has been an employee for over 20 years but never knew how many lives he impacted. You could have the worst day. By the time you get through the drive through there, you're just smiling. He just brings a smile to everybody's face. Um just interacting him with him in the drive thru just brings so much joy to just be part of this and to see this man so touched. Um it is life changing for me. So very, very grateful. They give me strength, they give you wisdom. They gave me vitality in our next story. We'll hear about a mystery regular who left thousands in tips at several bars in his community. One of the most mind blowing things that's happened to me in 10 years of doing this when Connor opened an envelope that a customer left him, he had to double check that it wasn't a mistake trying to figure out for a second whether that was what was intended. And then obviously, you know, you realize, you know, he left $2021 for 2021. It was pretty clear symbolism. I basically got months worth of rent in a tip. The mysterious good samaritan later came forward to reveal he had tipped five other bars that night. My mission that night was to support the local bars. Ernie also donated $1 million to the bar stool, sports restaurant fund that was set up to help small local businesses. I usually cook, I don't get take out that often, but when I do, I can just see the problems that are there and I encourage anybody that can do it. Please support the industry. It gives you hope that, you know, we're turning the corner and that we're kind of on the back nine of this and hopefully we can get back to normal soon Next. A restaurant rescue challenges taking over this community and helping struggling small businesses ultimately burning. There's $2500. This is the Venmo Challenge. It's a challenge where Stan Anderson collects donations through mobile payment apps to help local restaurants, they Venmo me or cash app or Paypal or chase basil, whatever and they give us money and they trust us to go than to restaurants like here and decide to give the money to the restaurant tours stan stopped by Bernie's pizza to give them a special surprise. Bernie and I both didn't sense anything, we didn't know anything that was, you know, what was gonna happen stan has already raised over $18,000 for struggling businesses through the Venmo challenge and now can add Bernie's pizza to the list. I was this something you kind of just took upon yourself to start? Well I don't know other than I can and what I mean by that is that anybody can, his work in the community hasn't gone unnoticed by the people he's helped. Great, good man, help me allow it helps take care of a few maybe extra bills that are laying around that are like 500,000 here whatever onto a story where another group on facebook decided to step up and help out local restaurants. When the Omaha Food lovers facebook group was founded, it was with the attention of simply sharing favorite places to eat locally during the pandemic though they realized they would be able to help restaurants that were struggling. We now know what it really does mean to the community and how much it is helping these places to survive and thrive. During this time, members of the group have supported multiple businesses in the area. I know it sounds dramatic. They're really, they say master stand and we're still here um serving people because they just kept telling others about us for new businesses like Kuantan john's food truck, support from the group has helped them stay afloat. That rug got pulled out from under us real quick. So we had had to pivot. So Omaha food lovers essentially was our assistance. It was support from members of this group that helped porky butts barbecue to get out there and support restaurants. Me right now, times have been tough and you know, there's a lot of restaurants in oh FL and places like myself that get a lot of publicity, but don't forget about the mom and pop shops and the smaller places support them all. Next, when an entire restaurant staff fell on hard times, a facebook group stepped in. Best friends diner has been hit hard during the pandemic. The first thing you try to cut back on of course is labor hours. Um So we shut down monday and Tuesday. We are now down to one server per shift. The tipping north country facebook group set out to help the staff when they learned about how badly the restaurant was struggling. It's a way of giving back to strangers. We raise money throughout the week and donate to a random service worker. You know, whether it be A server, a cook, it could be a mailman, it could be anybody and anybody in the service industry or local barber and whatnot. The group raised over $1,500 to tip the entire staff. With each staff member getting $130. apiece might seem small to some and large to others. You know, $130 is definitely, you know, I mean it's more than what anybody had in their pockets at the time, right? So um it was great to be able to get back. This is what my people need right now. I have single moms that work here, I have high school kids that work here, you know, people with families and mortgages and car payments. So it was very welcome. A restaurant owner received a birthday gift from barstool sports that helped save his business. Hello, is this Anthony? Oh my God. Oh my God! David, are you telling me what I need to hear? Yeah, yeah, we want to help you guys out. I'm going to cry right now, Anthony's Italian kitchen has been hit hard by the pandemic. It's lost over $300,000 and was months behind on rent. And I think tim solely deserves a big shout out here because he has really kept this place alive. And uh, he's a wonderful landlord. Tony submitted a video to barstool sports for its small business funds. I'm now in trouble, barstools, ceo Dave Portnoy saw the video and reached out to Tony to share the good news. I'm in a slump place right now. I don't quite know how to react and I've never caught at a loss for words, Tony will receive $25,000 every month that he needs it from the bar stool Sports fund. What a feeling that phone call is. Feel. It's just absolutely magic. It's magic. Somebody's telling you, they're going to give you money for a year and here's what he said. Jim, I'm gonna help you for one year. I mean, that's phenomenal. We hope you enjoyed these stories of good Samaritans across the country, doing their part to help restaurants and restaurant tours, if possible, get out there and support your favorite local businesses. Yeah, yeah.

The supply chain shortage just got fowl: Chick-fil-A is limiting the number of sauces it's giving out to customers because of limited stock. The chicken chain said Wednesday that industry-wide supply chain issues, which are affecting essentially every aspect of the economy, has resulted in a "shortage of select items" that Chick-fil-A serves, including sauces. In response, Chick-fil-A is only giving customers one dipping sauce cup per item ordered at many of its 2,600 U.S. restaurants."We are actively working to make adjustments to solve this issue quickly and apologize to our guests for any inconvenience," the company said in a statement. The chain said it's working to fix the sauce supply problems as quickly as possible.Fast food restaurants have been hit especially hard in recent months with both a labor shortage and supply chain issues. For example, ketchup packets have come in short supply amid heightened demand. Heinz recently announced a 25% increase in production. The fried chicken wars are putting a strain on the poultry population. Major chains, including KFC, Buffalo Wild Wings and Wingstop, are "paying steep prices" for chicken and suppliers are having trouble keeping up demand because of difficulties attracting workers.Luckily for Chick-fil-A, the company says it hasn't been affected by the chicken shortage.

Restaurants were one of the first businesses forced to close when the novel coronavirus outbreak began in the United States, and now they are one of the leading industries with businesses announcing permanent closures.

“What we have seen over the last three weeks has been nothing short of a tidal wave,” said Sean Kennedy, who is with the National Restaurant Association. “3% of all restaurants have already announced they are closing their doors forever.”

That number, according to the National Restaurant Association, could jump as high as 11% in just the next few weeks.

“We are a $2.5 trillion driver for this economy, employing one out of every 10 workers,” said Kennedy, “More important than that we are such an institution for local communities, we drive up real estate, housing prices, we are the anchors for so many communities, and we want to make sure we can continue doing that but it is going to be a real struggle moving ahead.”

The National Restaurant Association is calling on Congress to tailor specific help to the restaurant industry in the next stimulus package, because while many restaurants are trying to stay open, through offering take-out and delivery, most cannot survive this way much longer.

“Virtually every restaurant is adopting some type of carry out or delivery model, even if they never had one before,” added Kennedy. “At the same time, 70% of operators have already laid off their workforce, a lot more layoffs are going to occur.

Kennedy explained the restaurant industry has had to lay off 3 million people already and that number is climbing steadily. The National Restaurant Association believes at this rate, it could be as much as 7 million jobs lost in the restaurant industry, if there isn’t an immediate response from Congress.

In the meantime, the National Restaurant Association has been fundraising, and has announced a grant program to help restaurant workers laid off or financially impacted by the pandemic. Restaurant workers who need help can apply for the grants at

                RERF.US

.

“So far, we have raised over $10 million for this program. It is a series of $500 grants,” said Kennedy. “100% of the proceeds that we take in are going directly to affected workers.”

Most Americans, social distancing at home, are cooking on average 21 meals a week. Those who can afford to still eat out once or twice a week could save their local favorite restaurant and thousands of jobs.
