A little bit of good news and a lot of luck coming out of a destructive wildfire burning near the California-Oregon border as a photojournalist saved a puppy wandering around the ruins of the McKinney Fire.Jonathan Rivas said he arrived at the community of Klamath River early Saturday morning, just hours after the wildfire broke out where he said there was a lot of damage, with trees and homes burned. Rivas said he was finishing filming one neighborhood when he heard yelping. "I heard a yelp in the distance, but I didn't really know what it was, I thought it was an injured deer or one of the wildlife that's there," the AIO Filmz photojournalist said. "All of a sudden, this little puppy comes and runs up to me. I was super shocked to see that come from the rubble there."The puppy was clearly excited to see Rivas in the video.Watch the full rescue below The puppy allowed Rivas to pick him up and put him in the back of his car. "He was very excited, he was wagging his tail, I am talking to him like I'm talking to my dog, I picked him up, put him in the trunk of my car," Rivas said.He gave him some water before dropping him off at a shelter. Rivas posted the video on social media, where he found the puppy's family. The puppy has been reunited with its family. "Reuniting it with their family and after hearing their story, it makes me feel good, I am just happy, I was at the right place at the right time," Rivas said.

In a heartwarming moment, Vanilla the chimpanzee finally had the opportunity to witness the sky for the very first time after spending 28 years in captivity. The emotional encounter happened at a sanctuary in Fort Pierce, Florida, where Vanilla now enjoys a life filled with freedom and companionship.Vanilla's caregivers shared that she spent most of her life confined in small cages at a research laboratory in New York, which has since been closed down. It was her first time being outdoors with more than 10 feet of fence around her on all sides, according to the rescue organization Save The Chimps.Video below: See more images of Vanilla and hear from the CEO of the organization that rescued her As Vanilla stepped outside her enclosure, she received a heartwarming hug from her chimp buddy, Dwight. Each fall, many humans descend upon their favorite bakeries and coffee shops for all things pumpkin-flavored. Some quick-thinking police officers who recently rescued a dog in Glendale, Arizona, proved that people aren't the only mammals who fancy pumpkin-infused goodies.A video posted to the Glendale Police Department Facebook page shows officers attempting to rescue a German shepherd after a passerby reported that it was stuck in a canal and was swimming back and forth. One of the officers removed his ballistic vest and gun belt and tried to swim to the dog and rescue it using a leash. The dog, however, "was skittish and did not immediately come" to the officer, according to the police department's Facebook post. That's when another officer remembered his wife packed a pumpkin muffin for his lunch and used it to successfully lure the dog back to safety. The dog was not hurt. See the rescue in the video player aboveOnce it was back on dry land, the German shepherd, whose name hasn't been released, enjoyed eating the pumpkin muffin."Gratefully, the dog was reunited with his owner who lived just down the street. Great work by our patrol officers," the police department said in the Facebook post, adding that the department was hopeful that the officer's wife was "able to whip up a new batch of muffins for him."Video below: Fire department saves dog stuck in underground pipe

<p>One of the officers removed his ballistic vest and gun belt and tried to swim to the dog and rescue it using a leash. The dog, however, "was skittish and did not immediately come" to the officer, according to the police department's Facebook post. </p>
<p>That's when another officer remembered his wife packed a pumpkin muffin for his lunch and used it to successfully lure the dog back to safety. The dog was not hurt. </p>
<p><strong><em>See the rescue in the video player above</em></strong></p>
<p>Once it was back on dry land, the German shepherd, whose name hasn't been released, enjoyed eating the pumpkin muffin.</p>
<p>"Gratefully, the dog was reunited with his owner who lived just down the street. Great work by our patrol officers," the police department said in the Facebook post, adding that the department was hopeful that the officer's wife was "able to whip up a new batch of muffins for him."</p>

TY: THAT BREAKING NEWS AT SCANDIA FUN CENTER IN SACRAMENTO COUNTY WHERE A BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION TURNED INTO A RESCUE OPERATION AFTER A ROLLER COASTER GOT STUCK HIGH UP IN THE AIR. ANDREA: KCRA THREE’S MELANIE WINGO JOINS US LIVE. MELANIE, NOT THE PLACE YOU WANT TO GET STUCK. WHAT HAPPENED? MELANIE: EVERYONE IS SAFE AND ON SOLID GROUND TONIGHT, BUT YOU CAN IMAGINE HOW NERVE-WRACKING IT MUST HAVE BEEN FOR THOSE TEENAGERS TO BE STUCK WAY UP HIGH ON THE TRACKS OF THIS ROLLER COASTER BEHIND ME. AS YOU CAN SEE, THAT COASTER CAR IS STILL STUCK ON ITS TRACKS UP THERE. WE DO WANT TO SHOW YOU SOME VIDEO FROM A LITTLE BIT EARLIER THIS EVENING. YOU CAN SEE SACRAMENTO METRO FIRE IN ACTION, RESCUING THE GIRLS FROM THE TOP OF THE ROLLER COASTER. FIRE CREWS SAY IT’S ABOUT 65 FEET UP, AND FOR SOME REASON, THE COASTER CAME TO A DEAD STANDSTILL ON THE TRACKS. AND THAT’S WHE RESCUE CREWS GOT CALLED OUT TO HELP. ONE-BY-ONE, THE TEENAGERS WERE PULLED TO SAFETY. VERY SLOWLY, VERY CAREFULLY, THEY MADE IT DOWN WITH FIRE CREWS’ HELP. IF YOU’RE WONDERING WHAT IT’S LIKE TO BE THAT HIGH UP WITH NOWHERE TO GO, NOT KNOWING WHAT TO DO, THIS IS THAT VANTAGE POINT. ONE OF THE GIRLS CAPTURED THIS VIDEO ON HER CELL PHONE. IT SHOWS WHAT SHE WAS SEEING FROM ABOVE AND ALSO THE MOMENTS FIRE CREWS CAME TO RESCUE THE GIRLS. ALL OF THEM GRATEFUL TO BE OFF THE RIDE. &gt;&gt; I HEART JUST STARTED BEATING AND WE WERE STUCK UP THERE. I ANXIETY WENT UP. LIKE I SAID, I DO NOT RECOMMEND IT. IT WAS A BAD EXPERIENCE. DON’T GO ON THAT RIDE. &gt;&gt; WILL YOU COME BACK? &gt;&gt; NO, I WOULDN’T. THEY GAVE ME A FREE SLUSHY. &gt;&gt; WE GOT STUCK AT THE TOP AND IT WAS REALLY COLD. &gt;&gt; THEY WERE GLAD TO BE SAFE. NO INJURIES REPORTED AND THEY WILL GO HOME AND SLEEP IN THEIR BEDS TONIGHT, SO THEY ARE EXCITED ABOUT THAT. IT WAS A SUCCESSFUL RESCUE. THIS IS WHAT OUR HEAVY RESCUE FOLKS AND LETTER TRUCK PERSONNEL TRAINED FOR. &gt;&gt; NO ONE WAS HURT, GLAD TO REPORT THAT. ALSO NO WORD YET ON WHAT CAUSED , THE COASTER TO STOP IN ITS TRACKS. SACRAMENTO METRO FIRE SAID IT MAY HAVE BEEN SOME SORT OF MECHANICAL FAILURE. WE WILL TRY TO SEE EXACTLY FROM THE FUND CENTERS PERSPECTIVE WHAT HAPPENED OUT HERE. A LOT OF IT RELIEVED GIRLS AND PARENTS AS WELL TONIGHT. REPORTING LIVE, MELANIE

After a runaway dog named Moose fell through the ice of a frozen creek, his community came to his rescue.Kellie and Louis Nicolao recently dropped Moose off with their dog sitter Nicolina Converso in Maryland before taking a trip to California. "Moose seemed pretty comfortable in my house," Converso told WJLA.But soon, Moose was on the loose. "I opened the door to pick up a tree on my patio and he just went on out. And we couldn't catch him. We just couldn't," Converso said. She eventually texted Moose's owners about his escape. From across the country, they reached out to a local Facebook group for help. Moose sightings were eventually reported to a group called "Operation Fur Fugitive." "I was getting phone calls and text messages and emails and Facebook messages. It was just non-stop," Converso said. Someone eventually saw Moose on a frozen creek in the area and community members gathered to help. On top of that, his owners returned just in time and were the perfect people to get him to safety.Turns out, Luis Nicolao is a U.S. Naval Academy water polo coach and was able to jump in and get Moose out of the frigid water. "I went from this point of complete despair to, here I got a chance to save his life," Luis Nicolao said. "It was overwhelming, it was awesome and to all the people, the community, you know we teach this all the time in sports and the academy, it's community over individual. It's team over individual. And everybody came together for this one little dog and I'll be forever grateful."

A police officer and K9 near Houston are used to helping others in their community. The crime-fighting duo has been on the streets of Deer Park for nearly six years. But during a recent tornado, it was the police dog himself who needed saving."He's put himself in harm's way for me before," Officer Joel Nitchman told KHOU. So one week ago, Nitchman got his chance to do the same for his narcotics K9 Roni. "I'll never forget the noise. That's when I knew this was a big tornado," Nitchman said. The pair had just returned to the police station after training when the winds started picking up. Roni was in his kennel in the squad car. "The thought of debris or the car flipping over. I couldn't do that to him, I couldn't have him out there during that," Nitchman said. Surveillance cameras captured Nitchman running outside with lightning flashing, barely able to see in front of him."I knew something was bad when things were hitting my face, I don't know what. I knew it was debris of some kind," Nitchman said. It was about to get much worse."Once I went around the car is when all heck broke loose," Nitchman said. The wind and rain was so strong he couldn't get Roni out."I could barely open his door. When I did, he's a smart dog. He saw what was going on outside, and he was like, 'I'm not coming out,'" Nitchman said. Nitchman knew he had seconds to get back indoors. At one point, visibility was down to zero around him. "I'm like coaxing him. Come on, buddy. Let's go," Nitchman said. Seconds later, the pair is seen rushing back around the squad car toward the safety of the station. The front door was nearly blocked by a fence that had been tossed around in the wind."Never been through anything like that before," Nitchman said. One week after that close call, the video has gone viral. Nitchman's being celebrated for choosing to put himself in harm's way to save his K-9 partner, but he says he did what anyone would have done, and he'd do it again in a heartbeat. "I love that dog. He's my hip attachment almost every day of the week. He's a part of our family. You can't leave a loved one like that. There's no way I was going to leave him like that," Nitchman said. One week later, the team is back on the job after an experience that he says only brought them closer together. Upon investigation, the National Weather Service reported that the tornado ended up being a category F3.

Two sisters from Iowa are being recognized as heroes for their quick thinking after saving two kids who fell through the ice in a pond behind an apartment building.Fifteen-year-old Jasmine Morris and 17-year-old Jacora Morris were scrolling through TikTok when they happened to look out their third-story window at the right time. Watch the full story in the video player above. "I immediately screamed, 'They're drowning! They're drowning!' And then me and my sister, we ran downstairs. The dog chased us. We were falling down the stairs to get back here," Jasmine said."I just stopped what I was doing. I just got up, and I was just running out. I was just in shoes, shorts and a tank top," Jacora said. The Morris sisters jumped into the icy water to help the kids."I am numb, and those kids, they have been in there longer than me, so they have got to be numb. At some point, they were going to just stop moving. And I didn't want them to stop moving, so it was just, come on! Get them out. You can get out later, just get them out is all I was thinking," Jasmine said. One boy was trapped underneath the ice with only a finger above the surface."I grabbed his middle finger and that is how I pulled him up and we got him up there. He was kind of heavy too, honey! I got him though," Jacora said. The sisters turned into heroes in seconds."You could see the relief and the happiness that he was out of the water and both of them were safe," Jasmine said. The rescue happened so quickly, medics didn't get there until it was over."I was amazed. Not many children would drop what they are doing, or adults, and just run out and wade into water up to their shoulders to pull two other kids out," West Des Moines EMS Division Chief Doug Harms said.Jasmine and Jacora's mom, Jaqueline Morris, said all those years of swimming lessons paid off."I am very proud! I don't even have the words to say. Wow, those were my girls," Jaqueline Morris said.Jasmine and Jacora don't want praise. They are just overjoyed at the outcome."I am just happy they're OK," Jasmine said.So what did the girls learn about themselves through all this?"That I have quick reaction skills! And when I have a sense to look up and do something, I need to look up," Jasmine said. The city of West Des Moines plans to recognize the sisters with a lifesaving award at a later date.

<p>STREATOR, Ill. — A Golden Retriever is back home safe after getting trapped in a sinkhole.</p>
<p>The dog named Macy was discovered after another dog led its owner to the hole at a park in Illinois.</p>
<p>"This dog had fell into a five-foot hole, who has been missing for about 24 hours, from what I understand.” said Fred McClellan, Chief of the Streator Fire Department.</p>
<p>Firefighters were called in.</p>
<p>They tried getting Macy out with a ladder, but the older dog could not climb it.</p>
<p>That’s when the fire chief went into the hole himself and wrapped webbing around Macy so the rescue team could pull her out.</p>
<p>The team had to maneuver around, due to the unsteady ground.</p>
<p>"If you can see me falling. It was because the ground started to break on my one foot underneath, so I stepped across the hole to grab and then it collapsed again,” said McClellan.</p>
<p>Once Macy was free, she was a bit shaken.</p>
<p>But she is in much better spirits after reuniting with her owner.</p>

<p>Authorities in California say two people and their dog were rescued by helicopter after being trapped "snowed in" at a Northern California cabin for nearly two months.</p>
<p>Alongside aerial footage of the rescue, California Highway Patrol said on Facebook that a helicopter crew was sent to rescue them since they'd been unable to leave since Dec. 6 due to snow, blocked roads, downed trees, and they were running out of supplies.</p>
<p><iframe src="https://www.facebook.com/plugins/video.php?height=314&amp;href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2FCHPValleyAirOps%2Fvideos%2F1798384487025048%2F&amp;show_text=false&amp;width=560&amp;t=0" width="560" height="314" style="border:none;overflow:hidden" scrolling="no" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen="true" allow="autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; picture-in-picture; web-share"></iframe></p>
<p>The cabin's location was not specified, but the highway patrol said the Sierra County Sheriff's Office requested their help with Tuesday's rescue.</p>
<p>The agency said the pair and their dog were flown to a landing zone where Sierra County deputies met them.</p>

<p>ALTA, Utah — When an avalanche happens, one invaluable tool is avalanche dogs.</p>
<p>Many teams from around the West coast bring their dogs to Utah to get trained at Wasatch Backcountry Rescue’s Avalanche Dog Training school. </p>
<p>“These dogs are a great tool for us,” Andy Van Houten, President of the Wasatch Backcountry Rescue said. </p>
<p>“They've proven themselves valuable over the last several years as we've seen an increase in backcountry users.”</p>
<p>The school brings in students from all over the west coast including teams from Colorado, Idaho and California.</p>
<p>One of the 16 teams are Maia and Zak from Keystone ski resort in Colorado.</p>
<p>“Maia's a year and a half old she's a golden retriever,” Zak bloom, Maia’s dog handler said. </p>
<p>“She's done very well this week.”</p>
<p>The one-year-old is a friendly camera-loving star in the school but while it's fun in the snow for her, saving lives is no laughing matter.</p>
<p>“We've spent all week burying each other in the snow and letting these dogs find us,” Brown said. </p>
<p>“Just hoping everybody progresses with the idea that we can hopefully save somebody.”</p>
<p>Golden retrievers like Maia are among a variety of dog breeds building their resumes.</p>
<p>“What we generally look for is kind of the hunting breed,” Van Houten said. </p>
<p>“We want a dog that's pretty resilient out in the harsh weather and then we also want a dog that's gonna work hard that's trainable.”</p>
<p>Being friendly is also a part of the mission.</p>
<p>“We do a lot of interactions around the guests here at the resort and we do a lot of outreach education so we want dogs that are friendly” Van Houten explained. </p>
<p>“If you're at the resorts come up to say hi talk to the handlers we're happy to explain what we do how it.”</p>
<p>While training on the ground is one thing, training in the air is the mission of the final day of training.</p>
<p>“What we do is we hot load teams down here in the lower mountain,” Van Houten said. </p>
<p>“We fly them up to a site on the hill to simulate getting flown into a live rescue.”</p>
<p>As the week of training comes to a close and the dogs are mastering their air rescue skills, dogs like these will be ready to save lives in an emergency.</p>

Residents near Ottawa used a kayak to save a woman whose car plunged into icy water after she drove on a frozen river, police said in a statement. The residents didn't know why the driver was on the Rideau River on Sunday. People who witnessed the incident posted videos on social media showing the vehicle speeding across the ice.Lynda Douglas Kurylowicz, who posted a series of photos online — including one of the driver taking selfies while standing on the sinking car — told CNN she grabbed her phone after she heard the car driving on the ice.Kurylowicz said she was in disbelief when she saw the car driving on the frozen river and described the driver's decision to take a selfie during the ordeal as "cavalier."Shortly afterward, Kurylowicz called 911 when she heard the ice crack and saw the car start to sink."While I was on the phone with 911, people were getting ropes and things to try and help her (the driver)," Kurylowicz said. The driver started climbing out of the car while two men ran to get a kayak, which they tied a rope to. Then, standing on the ice before the open water, the men flung the kayak into the river and pulled the driver to safety, Kurylowicz added.Ottawa police said the driver, who was not injured during the incident, was charged with one count of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle.Police said the vehicle was still in the river and warned people not to venture out on the ice to catch a glimpse of it."Another reminder that 'No Ice Is Safe Ice'. Please use extreme caution this winter season!" police said.

Six days after a landslide caused the first floor of this home in Seattle's Magnolia neighborhood to collapse, firefighters are working and family and friends are waiting. We got a little cry this morning after the sound of a whimper this morning, neighbors called the Seattle Fire Department because of the landslide that happened last week. It is not safe to enter the home. And so right now we're exercising extreme caution for our own crews. They cut through walls and tossed out debris and hours in Got her, they discovered Sammy safe. Family friend Remy Olivier carried the black lab down a ladder to her owner and finally, in that moment of reunion, hopeful embrace. After all this loss, I did not expect this to go so well. Color is color is cool.

<p>Several Hilltown, Pennsylvania, police officers helped save a distressed horse from a burning barn last week, which was captured by an officer’s body-worn camera.</p>
<p>Officer Matthew Reiss told KYW-TV that he did not have much time to get Phoebe the horse out of the barn.</p>
<p>"Quickly improvise, and come up with a solution to get that animal out,” Reiss said.</p>
<p>Other horses were in the barn at the time of the fire and were rescued by friends and family, but Phoebe was reportedly too spooked to follow.</p>
<p>That’s when the officers and horse trainer Lena Obernesser teamed to get Phoebe out. Obernesser used a shirt to cover her eyes and push the horse to safety as Reiss used a rope to pull Phoebe to safety. Phoebe then ran to safety.</p>
<p>"She was definitely terrified, the cops were fantastic though, they jumped right in,” Obernesser told KYW. “I saw the footage and I was just in awe. Like oh my God, thank God they were here."</p>
<p>Obernesser credited the officers for rescuing Phoebe.</p>
<p>“They really stepped up, we had so many people reaching out,” she said. “it was, I was so proud to be a part of this community."</p>
<p>After a week, Phoebe is reportedly in good health. The condition of the barn is still being calculated, but members of the community have started a fundraiser to help the Red Wing Farm care for their horses.</p>

<p>The Gabby Petito case has highlighted another issue – making sure we give attention to other missing and unidentified people in the United States.</p>
<p>Right now, there is a gaping hole in how police report missing people and track them. </p>
<p>The <a class="Link" href="https://namus.nij.ojp.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">National Missing and Unidentified Persons System</a> – or NamUs – is a federally funded online database for missing, unidentified or unclaimed people in the U.S. </p>
<p>It's often described by cold-case experts as law enforcement's most effective and accurate missing person databases. </p>
<p>The problem is many people just aren't using it.</p>
<p>Unlike national and state databases law enforcement is currently required to report to, this system lets users post pictures, track DNA and it can be accessed by anyone at any time.</p>
<p>Ten states – including New York and California – have passed laws mandating law enforcement use NamUs. </p>
<p>Additionally, legislation is quickly moving through Texas and Pennsylvania.</p>
<p>Florida remains among the majority of states that make reporting to NamUs voluntary for law enforcement.</p>
<p>With an estimated several thousand people still missing and unidentified in the sunshine state, Hernando County detective George Loydgren agrees it's time Florida makes NamUs a requirement for law enforcement.</p>
<p>"It's a no-lose situation," Loydgren said. "It doesn't take that long to input the data and you reach a wide audience. If it inevitably helps you locate a missing person, that's what you want to do."</p>
<p><i>Katie LaGrone at Newsy first reported this story.</i></p>

<p>GEAUGA COUNTY, Ohio — Danny Tiller is a typical 13-year-old. The Ohio boy plays football and wrestles for the 8th-grade team at Berkshire Local Schools. But earlier this month, Tiller did <a class="Link" href="https://www.news5cleveland.com/news/local-news/oh-geauga/geauga-county-8th-grader-saves-man-from-drowning-while-on-family-vacation">something not so typical</a> for a teenager—he saved a life.</p>
<p>“It was a fight-or-flight kind of thing,” said Tiller.</p>
<p>The Tiller family vacationed in Alabama over Labor Day weekend and went swimming at the Little River Canyon National Preserve.</p>
<p>“It’s a pretty wide river, and the part where you jump off the rocks, it turns into a waterfall and it gets pretty deep,” he said.</p>
<p>Danny’s mom, Faith, watched as he and his family members jumped into the water and as a man jumped in shortly after them.</p>
<p>Danny and his family members successfully navigated the current and swam back to land, but Faith says she was confused to see Danny jump back into the river.</p>
<p>“I saw Danny jump back in and I was like, ‘Why is he jumping back in?’” she said.</p>
<p>But Danny jumped back in because he saw the man who had been on the cliff edge with him struggling against the river’s current.</p>
<p>“I saw him flail his arms and he asked for help, and I jumped in feet first,” Danny said. “I grabbed him under the shoulder and under his arm.”</p>
<p>It was a scary sight for his mom and dad to watch as they ran to help.</p>
<p>“I was watching from above and by the time Danny got to him, he was completely under the water,” said Faith.</p>
<p>Danny eventually got the unconscious man to the edge of the river, where his brother and cousins helped get him up.</p>
<p>“I noticed he wasn’t breathing, so I just started doing chest compressions on him,” he said.</p>
<p>While the 13-year-old wasn’t formally trained, he said he knew some general training.</p>
<p>“I heard you’re supposed to do it to the ‘Stayin' Alive’ song,” he said. “My mother is a nurse and she kind of says things and I just kind of picked it up from other places.”</p>
<p>His efforts were successful, and the man regained consciousness.</p>
<p>“By the time I got there, he was just starting to breathe,” said Faith.</p>
<p>Danny said he hasn’t talked to the man since the event, but said he just wanted to help.</p>
<p>“I saw him struggling and there was no one around me, so he probably wouldn’t have made it if I wasn’t there. It was a fight-or-flight kind of thing,” he said.</p>
<p>He proved to be a heroic and humble 13-year-old.</p>
<p>“I am just very proud of him,” said Faith. “I know that he has greatness in his future.”</p>

An officer with the Ohio Department of Natural Resources is being remembered for his strong work ethic and passion for the job.Jason Lagore died Tuesday night of an apparent heart attack while responding to a rescue at Rocky Point Lake in Highland County. "He assisted on countless, countless search and rescues, bringing closure to families and also finding people and being able to help them," said LaGore's friend, Shaun Lentini. Tuesday night, LaGore was trying to help a teenager who fell into icy water.Around 6:30 p.m., a 13-year-old boy started screaming for help near a private dock. A nearby contractor heard his cry and called 911."I'm at Rocky Fork. I had some little kid come up to me and said his sister's in the water dead," the caller said. "He come running up to us saying, 'Somebody please help me, please help me.'"The Paint Creek Joint Fire District responded to the scene. "By the time our crews got there, she was under the ice," said Lt. Branden Jackman. Jackman said they called in additional units from Hamilton and Franklin counties to help."The water was 36 degrees. Ya know, you look at water and think, 'It's just water.' A 36-degree water is no different than a three-story house fire. They'll both kill you just as quick," Jackman said. The 16-year-old's body was recovered about four-and-a-half hours later. The coroner said she drowned. He is waiting until all of her family members are notified before he releases her name.Sometime during the rescue-recovery mission, LaGore fell in the water after suffering a medical emergency. First responders tried to save him. He died at the hospital. The Highland County Coroner said preliminary results indicate LaGore had a heart attack."It affects us all. We all feel it because we're all family," Jackman said. Lentini said LaGore had a big heart and big vision. He said LaGore began the K9 program for the division of parks and watercraft at ODNR and has since led the first K9 academy. He had worked for ODNR for the past 15 years."He was well respected. He did a lot of training around all of Ohio. He worked with a lot of organizations with search and rescue," Lentini said. "When he wasn't working, he loved hunting. He was a guy that I went over his house for dinner and he'd send me home with some deer."Lentini said LaGore was a big family man. He is survived by his wife, Michelle, two small sons and his K9 partner, Sarge. The FOP Lodge 149 has started a fundraiser for LaGore's family. Two police officers and bystanders saved an 8-month-old baby who became trapped underneath a car after a driver hit a mother and baby in Yonkers, New York, police said.Around 8:30 a.m. Friday, the driver swerved around a corner, struck a curb and hit a parked car before hitting the 36-year-old mother, according to a news release from the Yonkers Police Department. Surveillance video from the scene shows she was crossing the street with her baby when she was hit.The car then crashed into a barber shop, pinning the baby underneath the car, police said. Two officers who were getting breakfast at a nearby bagel shop responded when they heard the collision and found the mother in the wreckage of the crash inside the barber shop, police said."The officers with the help of bystanders heroically LIFTED THE VEHICLE off of the baby so she could be rescued and given medical aid. The officers then rendered medical aid to both victims while requesting the necessary additional resources to the scene," the release said. The mother suffered a broken leg and her baby sustained a skull fracture and third-degree burns to her back and foot, police said. Both were transported to a local hospital for treatment and are expected to survive their injuries, police said. The owner of the barber shop suffered a minor cut. The identities of the victims were not released.A felony complaint filed in court named David Poncurak, 43, as the driver, and alleged that Poncurak was driving while intoxicated, "as shown by observations of the defendant, which included the odor of an alcoholic beverage on his breath, glassy eyes, and impaired speech."Poncurak and his female passenger weren't injured. Police said the driver had a suspended license and they found an alcoholic beverage inside the car.Poncurak was arrested and charged with second-degree aggravated vehicular assault causing serious physical injury to more than one other person, according to the complaint.CNN has reached out to Poncurak's attorney for comment."It is always a tragedy when someone is injured by the reckless and criminal acts of another person, and that is only amplified when those injured include an infant," said Yonkers Police Commissioner John Mueller in a statement."The actions taken are nothing short of heroic. The individual arrested in this incident will now have to face the consequences of his alleged behavior," Mueller said.

<p>“They went into the restroom together,” said Yolanda Fernandez with the police department. “At that point, things changed.”</p>
<p>WFTS learned the victim used her cell phone to send an urgent message to the bar’s Facebook page while the violent attack was underway.</p>
<p>Management at The Dog Bar shared the message with WFTS. It reads in part, “Help me, please call the police.”</p>
<p>“When I first saw the message, I don’t think I really even stopped to think about what was going on,” said manager Stephanie Marble. “I just felt like I needed to act.”</p>
<p>Marble and a trusted customer immediately went to the restroom area, pounding on every door.</p>
<p>Marble soon rescued the victim, escorting her to a safe space, and called the police.</p>
<p>“Pretty traumatized by the event, still,” said Marble. “I think it’s going to take a little while for it to leave me.”</p>
<p>According to the police report, the victim said, “I don’t give you permission.” She reportedly told officers she did not attempt to fight Matchett, fearful of what might happen due to his level of aggression.</p>
<p>Police arrested Matchett, charging him with sexual battery. Matchett has an extensive criminal history in Pinellas County, but nothing of a violent nature.</p>
<p>Vlad Cruz, a customer in the bar, says he spotted Matchett after the attack and tracked him walking down Central Avenue until police arrived.</p>
<p>“I was able to follow him down the street for a bit just to keep eyes to make sure he didn’t disappear anywhere," Cruz said.</p>
<p>Police are giving credit to both staff and that customer for their swift action Sunday.</p>
<p>“I hope more people take the opportunity to take action or speak out,” said Cruz.</p>
