Spring is the kick-off season for farmers markets across the country, but the COVID-19 pandemic has brought many markets' plans to open screeching to a halt.

Sherri Schreiner says 70 percent of her vendors rely on the farmers market for income. Schreiner manages the Roswell Farmers Market in the bustling town outside of Atlanta, Georgia. She says she's received so many inquiries from local residents and vendors asking when the market will be back open.

"I just had to break it to my vendors that we weren’t going to start,” she said. “I had to cancel our musical performances.”

The Roswell Farmers Market can't open without their local city's permission amid current shelter-in-place restrictions. In the meantime, they're offering their local vendors a new way to market their products: online order and a drive through the market.

"They're doing better by being there in person, while they pick up their order, and people can drive by and point and say, 'I want that,'" explained Schreiner.

Jennifer Tice owns Indigo Soaps, which uses natural and locally-sourced ingredients. She says the cash flow to her business has been affected by many farmer's markets being shut down.

"People are still afraid to come out and shop," Tice said.

Tice usually relies on the Roswell Farmers Market to help sell her products. Right now, she's selling them at another local farmer's market that is open, but she says the number of customers shopping is down by at least one-third.

"Definitely not having that day-to-day or weekly interaction with us has been a huge impact for us and both myself and a lot of the other vendors that are there. They live for market season," said Tice.

For the farmers markets across the country that are still open, organizers have put restrictions on vendors.

"All of the vendors are required to wear masks and they’ve got hand washing stations at both locations at the beginning and end of the market. It's only supposed to be one shopper per household," said Tice.

Zach White, who sells plants and produce at several farmers markets, hopes states recognize that farmers markets are essentially outdoor grocery stores that support local businesses.

"You know, they’re out of eggs, they’re out of meats. You go to farmers markets,” he said. “I have friends that are down the road here from our home, they sell eggs right from the farm. I mean, they have their licenses and they sell at the farmers markets and they’re stuck at home and they want to sell their products.”

White owns Buice Family Farms and says normally 50 percent of his sales come from farmers markets. He and his family have had to find other ways to reach consumers while the markets are closed.

Lifeguards are making changes to how they do their job as beaches reopen or make reopening plans.

They already typically have sunglasses or some type of eye protection, and they use gloves. But now, masks and social distancing will be part of their job too.

The one place they say it will be difficult to reduce contact is with water rescues. Wearing a mask to do those isn't really an option.

They're asking anyone going to the beach to have an extra focus on safety, which will keep lifeguards safe and cut down on interactions.

Another issue right now is getting lifeguards hired.

“You're going to have to prove to that lifeguard and probably that lifeguard's parents that you're taking every step to protect them while they're on the job,” said Thomas Gill, Vice President of the United States Lifesaving Association.

Gill says if you can prove that, the demand is there. During the last recession and for a few years after that, he says it wasn't hard to recruit lifeguards because people needed jobs, which he expects to be the case now too.

They've changed testing and training to make sure they can be socially distant, but it's more of a challenge with brand new guards who require the most training.

The American Academy of Pediatrics is clarifying their stance on reopening schools this fall, pushing for science-based decisions and calling on Congress to provide necessary federal funding for campuses to reopen safely.

The AAP, joining together with the American Federation of Teachers (AFT), National Education Association (NEA) and AASA, The School Superintendents Association, said they share the desire to welcome children back to schools this fall, however safety concerns must be considered.

“Returning to school is important for the healthy development and well-being of children, but we must pursue re-opening in a way that is safe for all students, teachers and staff. Science should drive decision-making on safely reopening schools. Public health agencies must make recommendations based on evidence, not politics,” the statement reads.

They go on to say a one-size-fits-all approach is not appropriate, given the nature of the pandemic across the country.

The AAP released guidance last month discussing the physical, emotional and mental benefits of returning to in-person classes and offered suggestions for how districts could make safety plans. Including wearing masks, bringing lunch from home, keeping kids socially distant in classrooms and limiting classroom-to-classroom movement. Their guidance was based on information from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The guidance kicked off a discussion on the national level about whether students should return to schools or continue virtual learning this fall.

Wednesday, President Trump said he strongly believes schools should re-open to in-person learning. The president also said he thought the guidance from the CDC was too high of a barrier to schools re-opening. The CDC announced Thursday they would not be changing their guidelines at this time.

Disney announced plans Tuesday to reopen Disneyland Resort and Disney California Adventure Park by late April.

Both would have limited capacity at first to comply with state rules, according to Disney CEO Bob Chapek.

The announcement comes just days after California health officials said they would allow certain outdoor activities, including theme parks and ballparks, to resume with 15% capacity restrictions in April.

After a dangerous winter surge in COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations in California, that filled nearly every ICU bed in some parts of the state and necessitated temporary mobile hospital units to be set up, state officials say infection rates and hospitalizations have plunged.

Chapek said they will need time to get the two Southern California theme parks ready, after being closed for nearly a year.

"This includes recalling more than 10,000 furloughed cast and retraining them to be able to operate according to the State of California's new requirements. I am pleased to say the response has been great thus far, our Cast Members are excited to get back to work," Chapek said Tuesday about the reopening plans.

Indoor dining is still banned for the time being in California. California Adventure planned “A Touch of Disney” event in mid-March to allow people to sample food outdoors, explore stores and walk around the park.

Disney plans to restart fireworks shows at its theme parks in Florida and California in the latest move by the company to ease up on pandemic restrictions implemented last year.

The company said Tuesday that firework shows will resume at the beginning of July at Walt Disney World in Florida and on the Fourth of July at Disneyland in California. The fireworks shows had been put on hold to discourage people from gathering together after the parks reopened following virus-related closures last year.

The decision was the latest move by Disney to lift restrictions implemented last summer to stop the spread of the new coronavirus. Starting Tuesday, face masks were made optional for visitors to Disney World in Florida, provided they are vaccinated, though Disney workers weren't requiring proof of vaccination.

Disney World visitors who were not fully vaccinated still were being required to wear face masks indoors and on all rides and attractions, and all visitors, whether vaccinated or not, were still being required to wear face coverings on buses, monorails and the resort's aerial gondola.

"As we continue to see more communities adjust and ease COVID-19 guidelines, there's a new sense of optimism with many positive signs moving forward," Disney said in a blog post. "We're encouraged by it too, seeing more families making travel plans, friends dining out together more often and more Americans returning to work. And at Disney theme parks, we're gradually bringing back more of our beloved park experiences."
