Families may be putting off eye exams over COVID-19 concerns, but one mom in Florida says keeping an eye out for warning signs is crucial right now as eye doctors adapt to keep kids safe and rebound after extra time at home.

Toddlers tend to fall when they're learning how to walk. Just like Erin Miller's daughter.

"My daughter was 15 months old," said Miller. "She seems to be falling a lot."

So they took her to a free public vision screening put on by For Eye Care Foundation on Florida's east coast.

"She was screened by Dr. Cano and he gave my mom a printout and said that there were some red flags," Miller said.

Turns out, she's nearsighted in one eye but farsighted in the other.

It's called amblyopia, or lazy eye. It's a condition that can lead to permanent damage if not caught early.

"If we can screen these children before their eyes mature they can be treated and prevent visual loss," said Dr. Cano.

That's why Dr. Cano says you shouldn't put off a visit to the eye doctor because of the pandemic. There are tools available to keep kids safe.

"One of the nice devices that we use, which I happen to have with me, is this device," Cano said. "It allows us to be over six feet away from the child."

Keeping social distance while keeping eyes healthy, Florida Society of Ophthalmology also offers resources for quick and easy at-home vision tests to help parents and guardians whose children might be spending more time at home.

Miller's daughter is two now and doing just fine with her glasses, and they're grateful to have caught the issue early.

"Incredibly grateful," said Miller. "I'm a special educator. I understand the importance of early intervention."

It's a good reminder to keep a close eye on your child's vision.

"We feel very blessed that we were in the right place at the right time," said Miller.

Right now, fewer than 20 percent of preschool children are screened for vision problems, according to the Florida Society of Ophthalmology.

CINCINNATI — Looking to work part-time for a professional sports team on game day? FC Cincinnati is hosting an in-person job fair Saturday at Duke Energy Convention Center focused on hiring about 400 people for positions at the new TQL Stadium.

“We are known for our fun, enthusiastic, energetic environment at our games. This is a beautiful, brand new TQL Stadium, and we are looking for people to help us create that environment, that can be helpful to guests and fans and be a part of this fun energy,” said Kimberly Eppert, director of human resources for FC Cincinnati and TQL Stadium.

From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, the organization will look to fill part-time guest experience ambassador roles, like ticket scanners, ushers, wheelchair and elevator attendants and game day retail associates.

“It’s nice extra income for folks who want to be a part of a professional sports team,” Eppert said. “Anybody who’s looking to go into a career in sports, this is a great opportunity to get a behind-the-scenes, from the inside-out look at what it takes to put on an event.”

Eppert recommends job hunters bring their documents to complete an I-9 form with them to Duke Energy Convention Center -- and don’t forget your best smile. Qualified candidates will get an interview and possibly an offer on the spot, and they will be photographed for their stadium credentials Saturday.

The fair will also offer validated parking at Sixth and Plum Streets.

To pre-register for Saturday’s job fair at Duke Energy Convention Center or apply directly for stadium jobs, visit www.tqlstadium.com/jobs. If you can't make it to the in-person event, Eppert said the team is conducting virtual job interviews daily.

"I think it's just a really fun thing to be a part of this historic time in our community, where we're opening a brand new sports arena," Eppert said.

The stadium opens in the West End on Saturday, May 1, and FC Cincinnati faces Inter Miami CF on May 16, the club’s first home opener at TQL.

CHICAGO — Travel should see a massive rebound this Memorial Day weekend. By some estimates, an increase of 60% from last year’s record low. With increases in vaccinations, relaxed mask mandates, and many people ready for "revenge travel," Americans are expected to take to the air and roads with a vengeance.

“We're going to spend more money, maybe take more trips or stay longer,” said Jeanette McGee with AAA.

Updated CDC guidelines say fully vaccinated people taking proper precautions can travel domestically at low risk.

“It's not completely back to normal yet, and I think for a lot of people, they will want to stay a little closer to home or travel to areas that they have a lot of comfort with for a while,” said Melanie Lieberman, senior travel editor with the travel and lifestyle media platform The Points Guy.

According to AAA, 34 million Americans are planning Memorial Day road trips, with another 2.5 million expected to travel by air.

“There are a lot of people traveling, so, you know, those COVID roads, where there were open roads and not so much traffic, that's not so much the case anymore,” McGee said.

The top five road trip destinations this holiday weekend:

1. Las Vegas, Nevada
2. Orlando, Florida
3. Myrtle Beach, Florida
4. Denver, Colorado
5. Nashville, Tennessee

Pent-up demand also means vacationing will be expensive. Flight prices have been climbing since April.

“This is a popular time for people to travel anyway,” said Lieberman. "Families are reconnecting. There are a lot of factors converging, and all of this is compounded by the fact that there’s still reduced inventory.”

Low inventory and high demand for rental cars could leave some scrambling for a ride. Rental car pricing in places like Arizona, Hawaii, and Florida has spiked by 300%.

“As much as $134 a day, if not more,” said McGee. “So, definitely best to plan ahead when you're looking at rentals.”

Experts say there will be a pain at the pump as well.

“Gas prices are the most expensive we've seen since 2014, and they're not going to get cheaper anytime soon,” said McGee.

For those hoping to avoid crowds, travel experts suggest reconsidering travel to some of the most popular vacation destinations.
