A charter school principal in Tallahassee, Florida, did not follow procedure before a lesson on Michelangelo's statue of David was given to sixth graders, school board Chair Barney Bishop III told CNN.

Due to this and other issues, she was asked earlier this week to either resign or be terminated from her position, Bishop said. She chose to resign.

Hope Carrasquilla, the former principal at Tallahassee Classical School, told CNN that things had been escalating over the past year.

"My board chair has not been happy with me," she told CNN, adding that she did not always follow every policy and procedure.

Agreeing with Carrasquilla's assessment, Bishop told CNN that over time it had become evident the school needed to go in a different direction and with different leadership, and he had expressed that to her on many occasions.

"She was not let go because of Michelangelo's David lesson," he said.

"Our school is two and a half years old. Every year we show that picture in the Renaissance Art class taught to our sixth graders," he added. The problem that arose in this instance was that the procedure for notifying parents of the upcoming lesson was not followed, according to Bishop.

"We aren't trying to ban the picture," he said, referring to the statue of David. "We think it's beautiful, but we are going to make sure the concept of parental rights is supreme in Florida and at our charter school," he added.

Last year, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis signed the Parental Rights in Education bill into law, which states in part, "The parent of each public school student has the right to receive effective communication from the school principal as to the manner in which instructional materials are used to implement the school's curricular objectives."

As a public charter school, Bishop told CNN, "We agree 100% with what Gov. DeSantis is doing with education in Florida. Parents decide what their children get to learn," he said.

"It does not mean that parents are telling us what we are going to teach their children. We are going to make sure that parents specifically know what we are going to show their kids, what we are going to talk to their kids about and any keywords that might be a triggering event. This gives parents the opportunity to say, 'Wait a minute. My child isn't old enough to hear that,'" he added.

Bishop and Carrasquilla agree this was the step that was missed regarding the lesson on the 500-year-old sculpture.

Bishop said about 97% of the sixth-grade parents were fine with the lesson, but the school did receive complaints from others.

"If there is a parent that has a problem and we haven't followed our process -- we have to make sure that mistake doesn't happen. That's why we adopted the process of a two-week notice and one-week notice," he said.

Carrasquilla's resignation was effective immediately and the school promoted one of the deans as the new principal.

Tallahassee Classical School enrolls about 500 students, and according to its website, it is a classical, tuition-free public charter school under Leon County Schools and governed by a non-profit board of trustees.

The principal placed on leave last month from Lakota East High School will be “reassigned” to a different job in the school system as district officials advertise for her replacement, the superintendent said this week.

In Superintendent Matt Miller’s Facebook chat Wednesday evening, he said that “we did post (advertise) a position for the next principal at Lakota East," the Journal-News reports.

On May 4, according to documents first obtained through a public records request by the Journal-News, then-Lakota East Principal Yejide Mack was ordered on paid leave but no reason was noted in her personnel records though there was a reference to an investigation by district officials of the first-year principal.

“I really can’t comment on the personnel issue with our former principal other than there will be a reassignment in the future,” Miller said during the Facebook Live chat watched by more than 1,000 viewers.

Mack’s attorney, Kelly Mulloy Myers, did not respond to phone or email requests seeking comment.

Mack’s departure coincided with Lakota East’s preparations for its graduation ceremony last month. Under Mack’s supervision, the school had switched from its traditional, gender-specific cap and gown colors of black for boys and white for girls to all black for all students.

Miller later apologized in a message sent to Lakota East school parents and students for the change and said the traditional, gender-specific colors would be restored as was done prior to last month’s commencement ceremony.

As with Mack’s departure last month, Lakota officials again released no announcement Wednesday or Thursday to news media, nor posted any message on the district’s website pertaining to the status for the principal who oversaw a school of more than 2,600 students.

As of Thursday evening, Mack was still listed as principal on the Lakota East High School’s website staff directory.

Lakota East is one of the largest high schools in Ohio according to enrollment, and the Lakota school system, with 16,800 students, is the ninth-largest in the state.

A a review of Mack’s personnel file this week, there was no resignation letter from Mack nor any notation of a change in her employment status beyond the previously released May 4 district directive placing her on leave.

Miller said during his Wednesday online chat the advertisement for candidates for the Lakota East principal’s job was posted for “five or six days now and we’ll close that on Monday.”

“We’re getting some really good applicants on that,” Miller said.

A surprise move at one of the largest school districts in Ohio. A high school principal has been placed on paid administrative leave pending the conclusion of an investigation.

Dr. Yejide Mack is not allowed to have any contact with students or staff and is banned from any school district property or at school events. But the question the veteran educator is asking is why.

“I am a leader who leads strictly with students in mind,” Mack said.

She is a first year principal at Lakota East High School but her 18-year career in education was dealt a blow this week.

Mack was told Tuesday the administrative leave starts with less than two weeks remaining in the school year. In a letter from Rob Kramer, executive director of human resources said the administrative leave with full will be for an indefinite period of time.

“I am disappointed in this decision to say the very least,” Mack said.

In a memo sent to parents, the superintendent said the district is not at liberty to discuss details of the matter and Mack said she has received support throughout the year and doesn't understand and what happened.

Mack's attorney Kelly Mulloy Myers said, “There is no legitimate basis for placing Dr. Mack a leave of absence. We look forward to a full investigation and resolution.”
