<p>After claiming his ticket Monday morning, Michael received a check for $35,750.</p>
<p>Michael told officials he is considering paying off his car and saving the rest.</p>

*** play of chance. Tonight's mega millions. Jackpot is an estimated *** new tonight. $207 million. Now let's see if I can make you *** millionaire tonight and the chance to dream. I would like to be *** billionaire. I want to win that lottery in there. If I win, I'll probably uh take *** vacation, retire, buy *** house and probably *** boat. But the lottery is more than fantasies of egregious wealth. So why do we have lotteries are extremely old mechanisms of raising money for government. That date back. Israeli is the 15th century Jonathan Cohen is the author of $4 and *** dream state lotteries in modern America. He says the precise origins of the lottery are unknown. It's tough because the evidence is sort of mixed. There's some evidence, I'm not really convinced of it that like *** lottery was used to fund the construction of the great wall of china. Other records suggest roman emperor caesar augustus used *** lottery to help fund city repairs. *** lottery was played in parts of europe in the 14 hundreds. There's *** record from 14 45 of *** dutch town using *** lottery to raise funds to build *** wall around the city. In fact, the word lottery comes from the dutch word lot, which means fate. Eventually the lottery made its way to the U. S. *** lottery was used to fund the british colonization of Jamestown. And then in the early american republic in the colonial period it was used to fund infrastructure projects including the construction of churches and dormitories for such notable universities as Harvard Princeton and Yale Cohen says lotteries back then looked different, They more closely resembled raffles and tickets could be pricey. So sometimes people bought just *** share of *** ticket, but not everyone was on board with this form of gambling during the second great awakening. There is ***, *** bit of *** moral backlash in the 18 twenties, 18 thirties, states outlaw them after the Civil War. Actually, they come back very briefly. But then by the 18 eighties, 18 nineties, there's only one state lottery left in the country that was the notoriously corrupt Louisiana. State lottery officials bribed state lawmakers and agents sold tickets across America. It was depicted at the time as an octopus spreading. It's evil throughout the country. But in 18 90 Congress ban Interstate lottery ticket sales, effectively shutting down the last legal lottery in the us. Because of this American soured on lotteries for decades until 1964, when New Hampshire starts *** statewide lottery that was the New Hampshire sweepstakes it was called and it was absolutely insane compared to what we have for modern lotteries. Initially, *** horse race determines the winning ticket numbers. New Hampshire tried its luck at the lotto to bring in funds to see supplement its low state taxes. Its success sparked other states to follow. In 1974 massachusetts introduced scratch off tickets and four years later the rollover jackpot was born producing massive winning pots, national games like powerball and mega millions meant even larger possible winnings and americans continue to test their luck. Lotteries are legal in 45 states, and about half of americans say they play the lottery. According to *** 2016 survey. In 2021, Americans spent over $100 billion 292.2 million shot of winning the powerball jackpot. That means it's more likely you get struck by lightning, die from *** shark attack or get *** hole in one in golf twice in the same round than you are to win the lottery, but that does not keep people from lining up for *** shot. What keeps people playing the lottery is that it is *** form of pursuit of the american dream. Even losing tickets provide value to lottery players because they provide the chance for *** few minutes for *** few days for *** few hours to dream of *** new life and you can't dream unless you play, I'm feeling lucky. It's been *** good week

Are you the winner of the Powerball's $546 million jackpot? Tonight's numbers are: 17, 24, 48 62, 68 and Powerball 23.The jackpot, worth $282 million in cash, climbed after no ticket matched all six numbers in Monday night's drawing. According to Powerball officials, Monday's top-winning ticket was sold in New Jersey and matched all five white balls to win a $1 million prize. The last Powerball jackpot was won on April 19 when a ticket in Ohio matched all five white balls and the red Powerball to win a prize worth $252.6 million. Since then, there have been 32 consecutive drawings without a jackpot winner. If someone wins Wednesday's jackpot, they can choose one lump sum payment of $282 million or an annuity option that includes an immediate payment followed by 29 annual payments that increase by 5% each year. If no one wins Wednesday's jackpot, the next drawing will be Saturday, July 8. Powerball tickets cost $2 per play. Tickets are sold in 45 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

<p>Wednesday's Powerball drawing is now its seventh largest ever, reaching a projected jackpot of $680 million.</p>
<p>The jackpot increased after no one hit all six numbers in Monday's drawing, which was worth $625 million.</p>
<p>The numbers for Monday's drawing were 18, 23, 35, 45, 54 and a Powerball of 16.</p>
<p>The odds of winning the jackpot are about 1 in 292 million. There have been four winning Powerball tickets sold in 2022</p>
<p>The Powerball jackpot has grown since a winning ticket was sold on Aug. 3.</p>
<p>Powerball also has prizes of $4 up to $1 million. The odds of winning a smaller prize are about 1 in 25. Powerball said that Monday's drawing had 1.2 million winners of smaller prizes, including one person who hit all five white-ball numbers, winning $1 million.</p>
<p>Powerball is played in 45 states and Washington, D.C. Wednesday's jackpot is the largest Powerball has had since a winning ticket was purchased on Oct. 4, 2021 in California. That jackpot paid out $700 million.</p>

Video above: Attorney advises lottery winners what to do after they've wonThe Powerball jackpot keeps getting larger because players keep losing. It happened again Saturday night as no one matched all six numbers and won the estimated $825 million grand prize. That means the next drawing Monday night will be for a massive $1 billion, according to a statement by Powerball. The winning numbers Saturday night were: white balls 19, 31, 40, 46, 57 and the red power ball 23.The increased jackpot will be the second-largest in U.S. history. The biggest prize was a $1.586 billion Powerball jackpot won by three ticketholders in 2016.Although the advertised top prize will be an estimated $1 billion, that is for winners who receive their winnings through an annuity paid over 29 years. Winners almost always opt for cash, which for Monday's drawing will be an estimated $497.3 million. The $825 million jackpot for Saturday's draw increased from $800 million on Friday as a result of strong ticket sales, Powerball said.Players who missed out on the latest grand prize in the 30-year-old lottery shouldn't immediately toss away their receipts. A Florida ticket holder matched all five white balls in Saturday's drawing and increased the prize to $2 million by including the game's "Power Play" feature. Six tickets won a $1 million prize by matching five white balls, including two in California, two in Michigan, one in Maryland and one in Texas. Another 17 tickets won a $150,000 prize while there were 80 winners of $50,000 each. More than 3.8 million tickets won cash prizes totaling above $38 million, Powerball said.It has been nearly three months since anyone hit all six numbers and took the lottery's top prize, with a $206.9 million jackpot win in Pennsylvania on Aug. 3. Thanks to Powerball's long odds of one in 292.2 million, there have now been 37 consecutive draws without a jackpot winner.Powerball is played in 45 states, as well as Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Video above: Attorney advises lottery winners what to do after they've won There were no big treats from the Halloween night Powerball drawing, as none of the tickets sold matched all six numbers. The lack of a winner means the next drawing Wednesday night will be for a massive $1.2 billion jackpot. The winning numbers drawn Monday were: white balls 13, 19, 36, 39, 59 and the red power ball 13.The increased jackpot will be the 4th-largest in U.S. history. The biggest prize was a $1.586 billion Powerball jackpot won by three ticketholders in 2016.Massive lottery jackpots have become more common in recent years as lottery officials have adjusted game rules and ticket prices to pump up the top prizes. The most recent tweak came in August, when Powerball officials added an additional drawing day — going from two a week to three — to build larger prizes and boost sales.Although the advertised top prize Wednesday will be an estimated $1.2 billion, that is for winners who receive their winnings through an annuity paid over 29 years. Winners almost always opt for cash, which for Wednesday night's drawing will be an estimated $596 million. No one has hit all six numbers since Aug. 3, meaning there have now been 38 consecutive draws without a jackpot winner — a testament to how slim the odds are of winning the jackpot: 1 in 292.2 million.Powerball is played in 45 states, as well as Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

WE SPOKE TO THE EXPERTS TO FIND OUT. WITH NO WINNER OF THE POWERBALL JACKPOT MONDAY, IT NOW GROWS TO AN IMPRESSIVE $1.2 BILLION, THE SECOND LARGEST JACKPOT IN GAME HISTORY AND NOW FOURTH LARGEST IN THE U.S. &gt;&gt; WE ARE ASKING YOU, PLEASE PLAY RESPONSIBLY, HAVE FUN, KEEP A BUDGET AND STAY WITHIN IT. REPORTER: LOTTERY OFFICIALS TELL US THERE HAS BEEN AN UPTICK IN PLAY AROUND THE STATE AND ARE JUST REMINDING PEOPLE TO PLAY WITHIN THEIR MEANS, WHICH RAISES THE QUESTION, WHAT DO YOU DO, IF YOU ACTUALLY WIN? &gt;&gt; THE MOST IMPORTANT THING IS, PROTECT A LARGE PART OF THOSE ASSETS RIGHT OUT OF THE GATE. REPORTER: BRIAN KRONEBERGER, A FINANCIAL ADVISOR WITH RBC WEALTH MANAGEMENT, HAS HAD A NUMBER OF LOTTERY WINNING CLIENTS. HE TELLS US, RIGHT NOW, BECAUSE INTEREST RATES ARE SO HIGH, THERE ARE PLENTY OF SAFE PLACES TO PARK THE ESTIMATED $400 MILLION. THAT’S WHAT YOU WOULD GET AS A LUMP SUM AFTER TAXES. KRONEBERGER ALSO SAYS IT IS IMPORTANT TO DO YOUR HOMEWORK TO MAKE SURE YOUR BEST INTERESTS ARE TAKEN CARE OF. &gt;&gt; WE HUMBLE, -- BE HUMBLE, BUT ALSO MAKE SURE THAT YOU SURROUND YOURSELVES WITH GOOD ADVISORS, THOSE ADVISORS, YOU ARE GOING TO LEAN ON A LOT OVER THE YEARS. &gt;&gt; EVERY SEVERAL CLIENTS I’VE HAD WITH A WINNING TICKET, THEY DON’T SLEEP UNTIL THAT WINNING TICKET IS INTENDED TO. AN ESTATE ATTORNEY CAN HELP WITH TAXES AND MAKING SURE ANYONE YOU WANT TO GIVE MONEY TO CAN BE PROTECTED, AS WELL. &gt;&gt; THAT’S GOING TO BE A CONSIDERABLE AMOUNT OF MONEY, MORE THAN THEY HAVE EVER USED BEFORE OR HAD ACCESS TO BEFORE. SO THEY MAY SAY, YOU KNOW, I WANT TO SHARE THIS WITH FAMILY MEMBERS, I WANT TO SHARE THIS WITH MY CHILDREN. REPORTER: PANOUSES ALSO RECOMMENDS STORING THE TICKET IN A VERY SAFE PLACE AND TAKING TWO TO THREE WEEKS TO IRON EVERYTHING OUT. IF NO ONE WINS TONIGHT’S JACKPOT, I AND TOLD -- I AM TOLD IT WOULD RULE OVER TO MORE THAN $1.5 BILLION, WHICH COULD MAKE IT THE LARGEST JACKPOT IN U.S. HISTORY. Monday night's record $1.9 billion Powerball jackpot drawing has been delayed due to a technical problem. The official results won't be known until Tuesday morning, the Multi-State Lottery Association said in a statement."Because of a technical problem tonight, we are unable to bring you the Powerball drawing at this time. As soon as we're able to resolve the issue and conduct the drawing, it will be available for viewing on Powerball.com and on our YouTube channel Powerball 39," the Powerball announcer said at 11 p.m. ET Monday. Watch the full announcement from Powerball in the video player above. The Powerball website currently says, “results pending.”The jackpot is nearly $400 million larger than the previous record jackpot and will keep growing until someone wins the prize. Only four previous jackpots have topped $1 billion, but none of those are close to the current prize, which started at $20 million back on Aug. 6 and over three winless months has grown ever more massive.A winner who opts for a lump sum payment would get an estimated $929.1 million, with the $1.9 billion for a winner who chose an annuity, paid annually over 29 years.Even as more people attracted by the giant prize drop $2 on a Powerball ticket, the game's ultra-long odds of 1 in 292.2 million means there still is a good chance that another drawing will pass without anyone winning the grand prize. That would push the jackpot for Wednesday's drawing to more than $2 billion.Powerball is played in 45 states, as well as Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

The Powerball jackpot grew to an estimated $747 million after no one beat the odds and won the top prize in Saturday night’s drawing. The numbers drawn were: 2, 8, 15, 19, 58 and Powerball 10.The $747 million Powerball jackpot up for grabs Monday night is the ninth largest in U.S. lottery history and the latest in a string of huge lottery prizes. Someone in Maine won a $1.35 billion Mega Millions prize less than three weeks ago and a California player won a record $2.04 billion Powerball jackpot last November. The jackpots grow so large because the tough odds offer just a miniscule chance of matching all six numbers and winning the top prize. That enables the jackpots like Saturday night’s $700 million top prize to roll over and increase for months. The last time someone overcame the odds of one in 292.2 million and won the Powerball jackpot was Nov. 19, 2022.The $747 million estimate is for a winner who is paid through an annuity over 29 years. Winners usually opt for cash, which for Monday night’s drawing would be $403.1 million.Powerball is played in 45 states, as well as Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Someone in Washington state overcame steep odds Monday night to win an estimated $747 million Powerball jackpot. The winning numbers were 05, 11, 22, 23, 69 and the Powerball 07.Lottery officials did not immediately make an announcement of a winner, but the Powerball website says there was a jackpot winner in Washington state. The site also says the jackpot for the next drawing on Thursday has dropped to $20 million. It was the first Powerball jackpot win since Nov. 19, 2022. That winless streak allowed the prize to grow larger and larger until it stood as the ninth-largest in U.S. history. The $747 million jackpot Monday is for a winner opting for an annuity paid over 29 years. Higher interest rates have allowed annuity payments to increase compared with earlier jackpots, when rates were lower. Most winners prefer cash, which for Monday night's drawing would be $403.1 million. The game's abysmal odds of 1 in 292.2 million are designed to build big prizes drawing more players. That strategy certainly has worked recently, as someone in Maine won a $1.35 billion Mega Millions prize in January and a California player hit a record $2.04 billion Powerball jackpot last November. No one has claimed either of those prizes.Powerball is played in 45 states, as well as Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

<p>A Michigan woman stumbled upon an email that said she won $3 million in the Michigan lottery and it wasn't a scam.</p>
<p>Laura Spears said she bought her winning ticket online at MichiganLottery.com.</p>
<p>“I saw an ad on Facebook that the Mega Millions jackpot was getting pretty high, so I got on my account and bought a ticket,” said Spears.</p>
<p>Unknowingly, she matched five white balls in the Dec. 31, 2021, Mega Millions drawing.</p>
<p>“A few days later, I was looking for a missing email from someone, so I checked the spam folder in my email account," Spears said. "That’s when I saw an email from the Lottery saying I had won a prize. I couldn’t believe what I was reading, so I logged in to my Lottery account to confirm the message in the email. It’s all still so shocking to me that I really won $3 million!”</p>
<p>Spears told the Michigan Lottery that she plans on retiring early and sharing her winnings with her family.</p>
<p>The 55-year-old said she isn't done playing the lottery. However, she has made some changes to her email account.</p>
<p>“I definitely added the Michigan Lottery to my safe senders list just in case I ever get lucky enough to receive another email about a huge prize,” Spears said.</p>

one lucky person wonder Harbaugh and I was like, I could have been me, I would love to Be that one. I hit that mega, that big pot so I can help my family and friends, you know, I think it's crazy. I think it's amazing and I really hope it's somebody local. I didn't participate in this one. I usually only buy it when it's real big and sometimes me and my friends will go in on one together. This one I just kind of ignored and somebody else one. I think it's just luck. Pure luck all around how you look at it on everything. This luck be the right place at the right time and it's, this is a good store too. So maybe that had something to do with it. We were here grocery shopping yesterday and it went through my mind. Maybe just for fun. I should buy it. And then I thought, no, never mind. And I didn't do it. And dog on someone one. Mhm. Last time it was 150 million that we had here and I believe after taxes, he walked out with About 75, 70 or 75 million and he's still around town. You see him every once in a while, still playing lottery, did you

After 40 drawings without a big Powerball winner, a single ticket sold in California matched all six numbers drawn Monday and was the lucky winner of the nearly $700 million jackpot prize, officials said. The winning numbers drawn Monday night were 12, 22, 54, 66 and 69. The Powerball was 15.Thanks to nearly four months of futility and final ticket sales, the Powerball jackpot has climbed to $699.8 million, making it the seventh largest in U.S. lottery history. No one has won the game's grand prize since June 5.This was the first jackpot won on a Monday night since Aug. 23, when the game launched a third weekly drawing, officials said.According to California Lottery's Twitter account, the winner was from Morro Bay. The winner will be able to choose between the annuity option paid over 29 years or the cash option of $496 million. Both prize options are subject to taxes. There were five $1 million-winning tickets sold; two in Massachusetts and one each in Virginia, Florida and Arizona. The 41st drawing set a record, topping the previous mark of 36 drawings that ended in January 2021. The longer the game goes without a grand prize winner, the larger the payout will grow. The jackpot drought is by design, as the game's long odds of 292.2 million to one are intended to generate massive prizes that draw more players. Lottery officials have noted that despite the long wait for a winning jackpot ticket, plenty of people have won smaller prizes, including 2.8 million players in Saturday's drawing alone. Those winnings ranged from $1 million to $4.Powerball is played in 45 states plus Washington, D.C., the U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico.

<p>Lottery officials have noted that despite the long wait for a winning jackpot ticket, plenty of people have won smaller prizes, including 2.8 million players in Saturday's drawing alone. Those winnings ranged from $1 million to $4.</p>
<p>Powerball is played in 45 states plus Washington, D.C., the U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico.</p>

<p>DES MOINES — The biggest lottery prize in more than eight months is growing larger after no ticket matched all five numbers and the Powerball in Saturday night’s drawing. The estimated jackpot for the next drawing on Monday is $670 million. The jackpot has slowly climbed thanks to 40 consecutive drawings without a grand prize winner. There hasn’t been a bigger Powerball jackpot since a $731.1 million prize was won on Jan. 20. The odds of winning the jackpot are one in 292.2 million. The estimated jackpot amount refers to an annuity option. Most winners take cash, which for Monday's drawing would be an estimated $474.8 million, before taxes.</p>

lottery jackpots are huge and they've been getting bigger and bigger in recent years. In March of 2018, Richard wald New Jersey 1, 533 million and in 2016, the powerball went for 1.6 billion Compare, these are 2,011 when the biggest winning of the year was 208 million. The increase is exciting. I mean, a $1 billion dollar payout, but the truth is, your odds to win the lottery have never been worse and it's all due to intentional marketing ploys that make it harder for you to win. There are two major jackpot Interstate lotteries in the United States mega millions and Powerball, both part of the multi state lottery association. In the next 60 seconds, you could become a millionaire. Powerball began in 1988 under the name Lotto America. This Friday. The big game jackpot is the big game came a few years later in 1996, soon to become mega millions since they started, there has been pressure to sell more tickets and create more bucks. This is where odds manipulation comes in, mega jackpots, get a lot of media attention and the lotteries. No, this massive mega millions. Jackpot still up for grabs. $536 million billion dollars up for grabs. Lotto fever in this New Year mega millions. Jackpot now growing and growing, you likely know plenty of people who would never buy a lottery ticket for a $50 million jackpot, but we'll certainly spend a few bucks and a $400 million pipe dream, you're not in the game. If you don't have a ticket. This willingness survive, but only at higher levels has led to these two lotteries to drastically lower the odds of winning the jackpot in order to create more buzz, more media fervor and more ticket sales. The way this is achieved however, is by making winds far less likely so that the jackpot rolls over more often and gets higher more frequently in 2010. The odds of winning the mega millions, jackpot was one in 100 and 75 million. Not great, right? Well with revisions of 2013, those odds moved to one and 258 million. That means that each ticket is one third less likely to win the jackpot in october of 2017 mega millions. Change the odds again. Now each ticket has a one in 302 million chance of winning the jackpot. That means that in the span of about five years, your chances of winning the jackpot were cut by almost half. Oh and the price of the ticket, it doubled. So every ticket has become half as effective and twice as expensive and powerball's followed a similar path to mega millions. So the question remains, why why make an already impossible dream even more impossible while with fewer people winning bigger jackpots more frequently for higher prices. The multi state lottery association is making a lot of money. People are generally unaware of their chances and the sneaky changes made to the game over the past few years. They just here, they have a chance to win hundreds of millions of dollars and are willing to spend a few bucks to have a shot. You can't win bobby unless you play, and there's no question it's working. Mhm.

The giant Powerball jackpot got even bigger Friday as officials raised the estimated payout to $635 million ahead of Saturday night's drawing. The grand prize was increased from an earlier estimate of $620 million, reflecting a surge in sales from players attracted by the potential payoff. The more people who buy tickets, the larger the prize grows. The jackpot is now the 10th largest ever won, though still far less than the record $1.586 billion prize set in 2016While the jackpot increases, the chance of winning all that money remains minuscule, at one in 292.2 million. Those odds are the reason the jackpot has grown so large, as there have been 39 drawings in a row without a grand prize winner. The jackpot amount refers to the payout for winners who choose the annuity option, which provides 30 payments over 29 years. Nearly all winners opt for cash, which for Saturday's drawing would be an estimated $450 million.Powerball is played in 45 states plus Washington, D.C., the U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico.

If you ever win the lottery, you will need to set up a plan quickly to stay sane and rich money talks News recommends you start by staying as anonymous as possible to avoid people, not to mention scammers coming out of the woodwork. To try to get a cut. Find an attorney and advisor, preferably a certified financial planner specializing and working with people who suddenly come into money. Consult your advisers before you sign the winning ticket. Hire a certified public accountant that can help you deal with the taxes on your winnings. Again consult someone who deals with big numbers. The side of the lump sum or annual payments is right for you, Forbes recommends. You don't make any major lifestyle changes for the 46 months after winning. Finally, get used to saying no, even to yourself.

Above video: 5 things you shouldn't do if you win the lottery There has been a jackpot winner in the $730 million Powerball, the first to get the top prize in months. Thanks to math and bad luck, lottery players had another shot at a giant jackpot Wednesday night as a $730 million Powerball prize was on the line. The Powerball jackpot was the fifth-largest ever, and it came only a day after nobody won the even-larger Mega Millions prize, which now stands at $970 million. Winning numbers for Wednesday night’s Powerball drawing were: 40-53-60-68-69 and a Powerball of 22.It was the first time both lottery jackpots topped $700 million. The biggest prize was a $1.58 billion Powerball jackpot won by three people in 2016.No one had won either of the jackpots since mid-September, allowing the prizes to grow steadily for months. Such a long stretch without a winner is rare but also reflects the incredibly small odds of winning — one in 292.2 million for Powerball and one in 302.5 million for Mega Millions.Maryland lottery spokeswoman Carole Gentry said Tuesday night's Mega Millions drawing saw $260 million in sales, resulting in 36% of all possible number combinations being covered. The prizes listed are for winners who choose an annuity option, paid over 30 years. Most winners opt for cash prizes, which for Mega Millions would be $716.3 million and $546 million for Powerball. Those prizes also would be subject to federal taxes, and most states would take a cut as well.Mega Millions and Powerball are both played in 45 states as well as Washington, D.C., and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Powerball also is offered in Puerto Rico.

<p>Somebody has finally won the big Powerball jackpot. So far, we know the winning ticket was sold a store in Maryland. The single ticket is worth more than $731 million.</p>
<p>Maryland does allow its lottery winners to remain anonymous. The state itself has only had three Powerball winners ever, including the latest one.</p>
<p>It's not really considered a "lucky" state if you compare it to places like Indiana, where they've had 39 Powerball winners, or Missouri, where they've had 31.</p>
<p>So, is there such a thing as a lucky state? Experts in math and statistics say no.</p>
<p>“Every lottery ticket has the same odds, no matter where it's bought, no matter when it's bought,” said Dr. Lew Lefton, a Georgia Tech University faculty member who teaches math.</p>
<p>Lefton says it's expected to have clusters of winners, whether its broken down by state, zip code, or even gender.</p>
<p>It would be strange if the winners were evenly distributed by state.</p>
<p>“Random processes always have clusters and empty spaces. If you think about just throwing random points of paint on a canvas, some of them are going to be close together. Some of them are going to be far apart. That's just normal,” said Lefton.</p>
<p>Population density doesn't really have an effect on the chances of winning. Buying more tickets also doesn't really increase your chances of winning. It just increases the jackpot.</p>
<p>“The real odds are increased, but it's incrementally increased. It's so small that it's not substantial unless you start buying literally hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of tickets,” said Lefton.</p>
<p>Lefton says if you're going to play the lottery, you're better off buying just one ticket.</p>
<p>“Don't expect to win, but just enjoy the uncertainty of being wealthy for a moment and the possibility. That's enough entertainment for your $2,” said Lefton.</p>
<p>The jackpot for tomorrow night's Mega Millions drawing is up to nearly $1 billion.</p>

What would you do with an extra $100,000? Des Moines resident Bradly Hanawalt said he asks himself that every day after learning too late that he had a winning Powerball ticket. Hanawalt said his wife purchased the winning lottery ticket Nov. 26, 2019, at a QuikTrip. "My gut dropped," he said. "A chance to have $100,000 was awesome."According to Hanawalt, the lottery ticket expired Nov. 30, 2020. He said he tried to claim the prize on Feb. 8, 2021 after finding the ticket in his wife's car."It doesn't hurt because I didn't have that money, but it hurts because I could have had that money," Hanawalt said. "I have six daughters. It would have helped with bills and everything else."Hanawalt said his wife had COVID-19 in November and that he argued for an extension with the Iowa Lottery. The Iowa Lottery did not grant extensions on claiming prize money because the organization did not close during the pandemic."We feel great empathy for those folks (…) but Iowa law, Powerball law … the administrative rules are very clear," said Mary Neubauer, with Iowa Lottery. "Once a prize is expired it cannot be claimed."Neubauer said Iowa Lottery issued a statewide release about the unclaimed Powerball prize before it expired."We put out a reminder in the final week saying, 'Please, please check. Look at home. Check the sun visor on your car. If you have a pile of tickets, check them,'" she said. Despite checking the winning ticket too late, Hanawalt said he is focused on counting his blessings instead of his lottery losses."It’s money I didn't have, but I have everything I want," he said. "I'm blessed to have six healthy kids. I'm walking again. We're all healthy and happy, and we're loving life."Hanawalt said his wife believes luck will strike again and that she continues to buy lottery tickets each week.Watch the video above to learn more about this story.
