A jury in Portland, Oregon, has convicted a novelist — who once wrote an essay titled “How to Murder Your Husband" — of fatally shooting her husband.

Daniel Brophy died four years ago.

KOIN-TV reports the Multnomah County jury of seven women and five men delivered a guilty verdict Wednesday on a second-degree murder charge after deliberating over two days.

He was shot and killed as he prepped for work at the Oregon Culinary Institute in Southwest Portland.

His wife Crampton Brophy was arrested three months later, in September of 2018.

Prosecutors determined that the writer’s motive for killing her husband was to cash in on his life insurance policies, so she could alleviate herself from debt.

Crampton Brophy’s 2011 essay was not used as evidence during the trial.

Sentencing will take place on June 13.

One of Crampton Brophy’s attorneys said the defense team plans to appeal.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Authorities say a 43-year-old man who remains hospitalized in serious condition is suspected of fatally shooting a woman following a confrontation between him and anti-police protesters at a Portland, Oregon, park.

Portland police identified the suspect as Benjamin Smith.

Detectives were working with prosecutors to review potential charges.

It wasn't immediately clear if Smith had an attorney who could speak on his behalf.

Authorities also identified the victim of Saturday's park shooting as 60-year-old Portland resident Brandy Knightly.

Police said she died of a gunshot wound, the Associated Press reported.

According to the Portland Police Department, the scene at Normandale Park on Saturday was "extremely chaotic" after a confrontation between an armed homeowner and armed protesters.

Oregon's largest city is experiencing a sharp rise in gun violence.

Police said two men and three women were also injured in the shooting and were taken to a nearby hospital.

Their status has not been released.

KOIN-TV reported that social media flyers indicated that a march for Amir Locke, a Black man fatally shot by Minneapolis police on Feb. 2, was happening at the park at the same time the shooting occurred.

A bust honoring the only African-American to accompany Lewis and Clark on their 1800s expedition of the western U.S. was toppled in Portland, Oregon, earlier this week.

Oregon Public Broadcasting and KOIN-TV report that the statue of York in Portland's Mt. Tabor park was knocked over and damaged overnight Tuesday into Wednesday.

The York statue appeared in the park under mysterious circumstances in February. The artist is unknown, and the bust was put up without formal permission.

The bust has been a point of political controversy, as it was put up in the spot where a statue that honored newspaper editor Harvey Scott once stood.

Scott, a former editor of The Oregonian, was a respected journalist in his time, but he was also opposed to some modern social norms like women's suffrage. The statue of Scott was toppled in October amid months of protest following the death of George Floyd.

Oregon Public Broadcasting says that city officials are hoping to salvage the bust of York.

"Unfortunately, the numerous racist responses to the memorial of a Black man forced to participate in the Corps of Discovery Expedition have not been a surprise," Portland Parks and Recreation Director Adena Long stated. "The latest act of vandalism is incredibly disappointing for me, and I'm sure the majority of Portlanders will miss seeing York at the top of Mt. Tabor."

Every day at Becky's Diner in Portland, Maine, is a race against the clock. Food is constantly coming in and out of the kitchen there. But the family-owned business recently got involved in a much different race, the race to vaccinate America.

With vaccination rates slowing, Becky's Diner decided to expand its menu and started offering COVID-19 vaccines to patrons.

"It offered it to people who worked down here, who maybe didn’t want to make an appointment at a local pharmacy," said Zack Rand whose mom opened the diner more than 30 years ago.

Vaccination clinics are nothing new for Becky's Diner. During the H1N1 outbreak, they also helped to facilitate vaccination clinics. It's an idea that could become a critical model for communities nationwide.

Dr. Dora Anne Mills is with MaineHealth. She pushed hard for the idea because it gave health officials a chance to reach working-class Americans where they are.

"We were there at 4:30 a.m. We ran into a lot of fishermen getting coffee and they thought ‘I’ll get a vaccine, it’s easy, it’s convenient,'" Dr. Mills said.

More than 200 people got their vaccine at this diner recently. While that number may seem small, it comes at a critical point in the pandemic. Daily vaccination rates have plummeted in recent weeks. At the country's peak vaccination point in April, about 3.4 million people were getting shots daily. The U.S. is now averaging fewer than 1 million shots per day, a nearly 70% drop.

"People under 50 are busy. They’re working. They have kids. They’re not going to take time off to go to a doctor’s office or clinic, so we need to go to where they’re at," Dr. Mills added.

It’s young adults who public health officials are really trying to get to right now. What public health officials like Dr. Mills are realizing is that answering some questions for folks in person, often overwhelmingly helps to combat vaccine hesitancy.

"I’ve found the people who are vaccine-hesitant, just have a few questions. They just need some concerns addressed. They need to have a conversation, that’s all it is," she added.

With those dropping numbers, it makes clinics like the one at Becky's Diner even more important. Like much of the country, Maine is incredibly rural. At some clinics there, maybe 10 or 15 people come in to get a shot during a week and Dr. Mills is OK with that.

"This is what we have to be doing across the country," she noted.

In the coming weeks, vaccine clinics will start popping up at local breweries, music venues, churches, and mosques across the state because at this point, every shot matters.

A Black-owned rideshare service by women for women is being rolled out in Portland. It's called Go Girl Ride.

The owner's mission is to provide a service for women and non-binary people to ride and feel safe.

Founder Trenelle Doyle says the idea was sparked while she was an Uber driver and would hear stories about people feeling unsafe in other rides.

She says it's also something she experiences firsthand. Pairing that with rising sex trafficking crimes, Doyle says she wants to inspire change.

Go Girl Ride is launching on Juneteenth.

Doyle says that's the perfect launch date because it's about the liberation of Black people.

After being rolled out in Portland, the ride-share service will expand to other cities that have high rates of sex trafficking.
