Two small planes collided in Northern California while trying to land at a local airport Thursday and at least two of the three occupants were killed, officials said. The planes crashed at Watsonville Municipal Airport shortly before 3 p.m., according to a tweet from the city of Watsonville. The city-owned airport does not have a control tower to direct aircraft landing and taking off.Video above: Witness describes watching planes crash into each otherThere were two people aboard a twin-engine Cessna 340 and only the pilot aboard a single-engine Cessna 152 during the crash, according to the Federal Aviation Administration. Officials say multiple fatalities were reported but it was not immediately clear whether anyone survived. The pilots were on their final approaches to the airport before the collision, the FAA said in a statement. The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board, which did not immediately have additional details, are investigating the crash. No one on the ground was injured. The airport has four runways and is home to more than 300 aircraft, according to its website. It handles more than 55,000 operations a year and is used often for recreational planes and agriculture businesses.Watsonville, near the Monterey Bay, is about 100 miles south of San Francisco.Photos and videos posted on social media showed the wreckage of one small plane in a grassy field by the airport. One picture showed a plume of smoke visible from a street near the airport.Video below: Raw footage from the scene of the crash A photo from the city of Watsonville showed damage to a small building at the airport, with firefighters on the scene. The manager of the Watsonville Municipal Airport was unavailable for a phone interview in the hours after the crash. The airport accounts for about 40% of all general aviation activities in the Monterey Bay area, according to the City of Watsonville’s website. The Watsonville Police Department referred calls to the Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office, where a dispatcher had no information. Two other pilots also were hurt in aircraft crashes elsewhere in California on Thursday.A 65-year-old San Diego man received injuries that were major but not life-threatening when his single-engine plane crashed on a street near a busy freeway overpass in El Cajon, authorities said. The plane reportedly struck an SUV but nobody on the ground was hurt in the city nearly 20 miles northeast of downtown San Diego.Later, the pilot of an ultralight aircraft was critically injured when it crashed upside down on a building at the Camarillo Airport in Ventura County, about 60 miles from downtown Los Angeles.

A fatal plane crash in Watertown, Wisconsin, claimed the lives of a 73-year-old pilot and his 8-year-old grandson joining him for a flight up to northern Wisconsin.Summit View Elementary School sent a letter to inform families about the tragic loss of student Colin Strebe on June 14 due to an accident. The aircraft plunged into a grove of trees at Brandt Quirk Park near a residential area on Wednesday at approximately 9 a.m. Investigators spent much of Thursday at the site, where pieces of the wreckage were spread across the soccer field. The National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration were at the airport hangar to examine the evidence. According to reports from Federal Aviation Administration, the plane had just taken off from the Municipal Airport about 3 miles from the accident site. Sources say the flight was planned to Manitowish Waters.Investigators will collect as much information as they can from witnesses, and the wreckage itself, to determine, if they can, what led to this family tragedy in Watertown.Watertown police department said the Brandt Quirk Park would remain closed through the weekend for site cleanup.Police have yet to identify the victims, officially saying only that there were two victims. A wayward and unresponsive business plane that flew over the nation's capital Sunday afternoon caused the military to scramble a fighter jet before the plane crashed in Virginia, officials said. The fighter jet caused a loud sonic boom that was heard across the capital region.Hours later, police said rescuers had reached the site of the plane crash in a rural part of the Shenandoah Valley and that no survivors were found. The Federal Aviation Administration says the Cessna Citation took off from Elizabethtown, Tennessee, on Sunday and was headed for Long Island's MacArthur Airport. Inexplicably, the plane turned around over New York's Long Island and flew a straight path down over D.C. before it crashed over mountainous terrain near Montebello, Virginia, around 3:30 p.m.It was not immediately clear why the plane was nonresponsive, why it crashed or how many people were on board. The plane flew directly over the nation's capital, though it was technically flying above some of the most heavily restricted airspace in the nation.A U.S. official confirmed to The Associated Press that the military jet had scrambled to respond to the small plane, which wasn't responding to radio transmissions and later crashed. The official was not authorized to publicly discuss details of the military operation and spoke on condition of anonymity.Flight tracking sites showed the jet suffered a rapid spiraling descent, dropping at one point at a rate of more than 30,000 feet per minute before crashing in the St. Mary's Wilderness. The North American Aerospace Defense Command later said in a statement that the F-16 was authorized to travel at supersonic speeds, which caused a sonic boom that was heard in Washington and parts of Virginia and Maryland."During this event, the NORAD aircraft also used flares – which may have been visible to the public – in an attempt to draw attention from the pilot," the statement said. "Flares are employed with highest regard for safety of the intercepted aircraft and people on the ground. Flares burn out quickly and completely and there is no danger to the people on the ground when dispensed."Virginia State Police said officers were notified of the potential crash shortly before 4 p.m. and rescuers reached the crash site by foot around four hours later. No survivors were found, police said. The plane that crashed was registered to Encore Motors of Melbourne Inc, which is based in Florida. John Rumpel, who runs the company, told The New York Times that his daughter, 2-year-old granddaughter, her nanny and the pilot were aboard the plane. They were returning to their home in East Hampton, on Long Island, after visiting his house in North Carolina, he said.Rumpel, a pilot, told the newspaper he didn't have much information from authorities but hoped his family didn't suffer and suggested the plane could've lost pressurization."I don't think they've found the wreckage yet," Rumpel told the newspaper. "It descended at 20,000 feet a minute, and nobody could survive a crash from that speed."A woman who identified herself as Barbara Rumpel, listed as the president of the company, said she had no comment Sunday when reached by The Associated Press. The episode brought back memories of the 1999 crash of a Learjet that lost cabin pressure and flew aimlessly across the country with professional golfer Payne Stewart aboard. The jet crashed in a South Dakota pasture and six people died.President Joe Biden was playing golf at Joint Base Andrews around the time the fighter jet took off. Anthony Guglielmi, spokesperson for the U.S. Secret Service, said the incident had no impact on the president's movements Sunday. Biden was playing golf at the Maryland military base with his brother in the afternoon.A White House official said the president had been briefed on the crash and that the sound of the scrambling aircraft was faint at Joint Base Andrews.___Associated Press writers Chris Megerian and Zeke Miller in Washington and Christopher Weber in Los Angeles contributed to this report.

Five employees of an environmental consulting firm died Wednesday when a small airplane they were traveling in crashed outside an industrial area of Little Rock shortly after the plane took off, authorities said. The twin-engine plane crashed outside a 3M plant in Little Rock, a couple of miles south of Bill and Hillary Clinton National Airport, Pulaski County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Lt. Cody Burk said. The Federal Aviation Administration said five people were on board the plane. All passengers died in the crash. Burk did not immediately release the names or ages of the people on the plane. The Beech BE20 had departed the Little Rock airport and was headed to John Glenn International Airport in Columbus, Ohio, the FAA said.CTEH, an environmental consulting firm based in North Little Rock, said the five people on board the plane - including the pilot - were its employees. A company spokesman said the employees were responding to an explosion at an Ohio metals plant this week that killed one worker and sent more than a dozen to the hospital.“We are incredibly saddened to report the loss of our Little Rock colleagues,” Paul Nony, senior vice president of CTEH, said in a statement released by the company. “We ask everyone to keep the families of those lost and the entire CTEH team in their thoughts and prayers.”The crash occurred as a line of thunderstorms that the National Weather Service said included wind gusts of 40 mph (64 kph) moved through the Little Rock area. Burk said it would be up to investigators to determine if weather was a factor.Nearby residents said they saw an intense fire from the crash.Dennis Gordon told the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette he was standing on a street nearby the crash when he heard the wind pick up and then an explosion. Gordon told the paper that several smaller explosions followed, and then a huge fire.“It was just red, then it starts turning black, and there’s this burnt smell,” Gordon told the paper. The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board will investigate the crash.

<p>LOS ANGELES (AP) — Police body-camera video shows a harrowing rescue in California, where a small plane apparently lost power and crashed on railroad tracks shortly after takeoff from a suburban Los Angeles airfield. </p>
<p>The Federal Aviation Administration says the Cessna crashed around 2:10 p.m. Sunday and a Metrolink train came roaring through only minutes later. </p>
<p>Luckily, a police station was only blocks away and four officers were able to pull the bloodied pilot onto the pavement moments before the train smashed the plane to pieces. </p>
<p>No other injuries were reported. </p>
<p>A police sergeant who joined the rescue says he requested that Metrolink stop the train, but there may not have been enough time.</p>

Indonesia's National Search and Rescue Agency team was continuing a search operation for the 62 people aboard Sriwijaya Air Flight 182, which crashed into the ocean shortly after takeoff Saturday. The Boeing 737-500 plane was heading from Jakarta to the city of Pontianak, on the Indonesian side of Borneo, when it lost contact at 2:40 p.m. local time (2:40 a.m. ET), 11 nautical miles north of Jakarta's Soekarno-Hatta International Airport. There were 50 passengers — 43 adults and 7 children — on board, as well as 12 crew members, according to Indonesia's minister of transportation.Sunday, family members gathered at a victim identification center in Jakarta and at a crisis center in Pontianak, where they waited for any news of their loved ones. Here's what we know about the victims so far.Agus Minarni and Muhammad Nur Kholifatul AminAgus Minarni and Muhammad Nur Kholifatul Amin had traveled from their home in Mempawah, in Indonesian Borneo, to Jakarta, in Java, to attend the funeral of Amin's father — which was taking place in Ponorogo, in Java's east. While they were in Ponorogo, they were also able to spend time with one of their sons, who attends a boarding school there. When the couple returned to Jakarta, Minarni's brother Yudiansyah Yunus asked her for help in securing a place at a boarding school for one of his sons. That was the last time they would be in contact, Yunus told CNN.Minarni and her husband were supposed to fly home Jan. 5 on another carrier — Nam Air, he said. But when they arrived at the airport Tuesday, they were informed that in order to board the flight, they would need to take a coronavirus PCR test — a process that would delay them from flying for another two days.Once the couple got the results of their test, they were able to rebook their flight home — but this time, it would be on another carrier, Sriwijaya Air.Yunus says the loss of his sister has left a huge hole in the family and that he will miss her terribly. She was a kind person, he said, adding that she had always helped him and his younger sister in many ways. He added that she was an especially caring person and had treated her aunts and uncles with kindness.Yunus said he will take care of the couple's teenage children, who are now orphans. It is imperative that "all involved stakeholders, the airline and the government take this investigation seriously," Yunus said.He added that he hopes the Indonesian authorities will do their best "to at least find their remains in whatever form" so he can bury his sister "properly, like those who pass away normally.""That's all I hope," he said.A family of five in transitA family of five from Bangka island — an island to the east of of Sumatra — was missing and feared dead, according to aunt of the family, who spoke to CNN.The family released a statement Saturday saying that 26-year-old Rizki Wahyudi, his 26-year-old wife, Indah Halimah Putri, and their 7-month-old son were on the flight that crashed.Wahyudi's mother and cousin were also on the flight.Wahyudi worked for the Indonesian Forestry Commission in Ketapang, West Kalimantan — a province on the Indonesian side of Borneo — for the past three years. The family of five had been in the Bangka Islands visiting other family members and were headed back to West Kalimantan via Jakarta.Sunday, two of Wahyudi's uncles in Bangka submitted their DNA to help with the identification process.A pregnant mother and her family who were visiting relatives in JakartaRatih Windania, who was four months pregnant, was visiting family members in Jakarta with her 2-year-old daughter, Yumna; 8-year-old nephew, Athar Rizki Riawan; uncle Tony Islmail and aunt Rachmawati, according to Riawan's father, Iwan.Iwan said the group was meant to fly out on Jan. 1, but was delayed as they had to take COVID-19 tests prior to flying. On Jan. 9, the group was meant to get an earlier flight on Nam Air, but it was changed to the Sriwijaya Air Flight 182 for an "unknown reason," he said.In a story posted to her Instagram account before departing from Jakarta airport Saturday, Windania says goodbye to relatives who live in Jakarta.Windania also posted a cheerful photo of herself and her smiling daughter and nephew sitting on the plane moments before takeoff.Iwan told CNN his son Riawan was 8 years old but had an old soul, giving advice to his 16-year-old sister rather than the other way round. "Our big family feels lost now that he's gone," Iwan said, visibly emotional from his home in Pontianak.Father and businessman Yohanes Suherdi, 30Yohanes Suherdi was in Jakarta on a business trip and looking forward to returning to his family in Ngarak, a village several hours from Pontianak airport. His wife, Susilawati Bungahilaria, 32, told CNN she hopes Suherdi will be found safe and that the family will be able to reunite soon. The couple has a 5-year-old son, Rian Gusti Rafael.Bungahilaria said she spoke with her husband — whom she described as a "very good and sociable person" — shortly before takeoff."His last message to me was not to forget to take our son to see a doctor because he had a fever," she said.Sobbing, she said her son keeps asking when his father is coming home.Bungahilaria and Suherdi's father traveled Sunday to a crisis center set up in Pontianak, where they submitted physical items that could help with the identification process, including the father's DNA.

A 4-year-old boy who was riding in an SUV with his mother died after a small plane struggling to return to a South Florida airport crashed into them on a residential street, officials said. The boy, Taylor Bishop, and two people on the plane died in the Monday afternoon crash, which was recorded by a neighbor's security camera, fire officials said. The boy's mother, Megan Bishop, was also injured, but was released from the hospital later Monday, Pembroke Pines Fire Chief Marcel Rodriguez told news outlets. Two people on the plane also died, Rodriguez said. The Beechcraft Bonanza plane had just taken off from North Perry Airport in Pembroke Pines and was returning just before 3 p.m., the fire chief said. He said it may have experienced mechanical issues after taking off.“The car literally looks like it’s just in half," neighbor Salah Elshaer, who called 911, told WSVN. Megan Bishop was able to get out of the vehicle and was trying to free Taylor, officials said. Firefighters eventually freed the trapped child, and they were taken to the hospital, where the boy died.A neighbor's door camera recorded the crash, showing the plane nose-diving into the SUV as the woman was driving down a street. The plane's wreckage then hurtles along the pavement, leaving a line of flames in its wake. The plane also took out a power line when it crashed, officials said.“We heard like a tremendous boom. It was like a bomb,” Anabel Fernandez, the woman who lives at the home where the video came from told our sister station WPBF. “We ran outside and we saw the fire. And everything was on fire outside in the street.”The names of the two victims on the plane have not been released. The Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the crash.

Ten officials have been indicted in Iran over the 2020 military shootdown of a Ukrainian passenger plane that killed 176 people, Iranian media reported Tuesday, an announcement coming just as Tehran begins indirect negotiations with the West over its collapsed nuclear deal with world powers. The timing of the announcement comes after Iran faced withering international criticism last month for releasing a final report into the shootdown of Ukraine International Airlines flight No. PS752 that blamed human error but named no one responsible for the incident. Tehran military prosecutor Gholamabbas Torki made the comment Tuesday while handing over his office to Nasser Seraj. The semiofficial ISNA news agency and the Iranian judiciary's Mizan news agency both reported the remarks, without elaborating. Video — Bodies recovered at site of Iran plane crashFollowing three days of denial in January 2020 in the face of mounting evidence, Iran finally acknowledged that its forces mistakenly downed the Ukrainian jetliner with two surface-to-air missiles. In preliminary reports on the disaster last year, Iranian authorities blamed an air defense operator who they said mistook the Boeing 737-800 for an American cruise missile. The shootdown happened the same day Iran launched a ballistic missile attack on U.S. troops in Iraq in retaliation for an American drone strike that killed a top Iranian general.

One of two planes that collided in the air near Denver deployed a parachute and slowly drifted to the ground, where two people walked away from the aircraft, a sheriff's office spokesman said Wednesday. The other plane, a small cargo turboprop, landed at an airport, according to Arapahoe County Sheriff's Office spokesperson Deputy John Bartmann. The lone person on board that plane was also unharmed. The collision occurred over Cherry Creek State Park at about 10:25 a.m., he said. Bartmann said it was not yet known which aircraft was responsible."You expect something a lot worse. This was amazing," Bartmann said. "We've had several plane crashes in our jurisdiction. Never have we seen a parachute be deployed and bring the plane down safely."The plane that used a parachute was a Cirrus SR22."It came down nice and slow," he said. The other aircraft was a Metroliner, officials said.A tweet from the National Transportation Safety Board said the incident happened as the planes were landing. The agency is sending a team of investigators. The debris field stretched "pretty far," Bartmann said. He said if people find plane parts in the park, they should not touch them, and instead call the sheriff's office. Watch the video above to learn more about this story.
