PITTSBURGH —

A two-lane bridge collapsed in Pittsburgh early Friday, prompting rescuers to rappel nearly 150 feet while others formed a human chain to help rescue multiple people from a dangling bus.

Pittsburgh Public Safety alerted the public to avoid Forbes Avenue and South Braddock Avenue in Frick Park near the city’s Point Breeze neighborhood.

The bridge that collapsed is known as the Fern Hollow Bridge.

The collapse comes just hours before President Joe Biden is scheduled to visit the city to talk about the $1 trillion infrastructure bill that includes bridge maintenance. Pittsburgh Mayor Ed Gainey said the White House reached out to him about the collapse.

White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki said Biden will proceed with the planned trip.

"Our team is in touch with state and local officials on the ground as they continue to gather information about the cause of the collapse," Psaki said.

Gainey said there were no fatalities reported and there were no serious injuries. Pittsburgh Fire Chief Darryl Jones said there were 10 minor injuries reported and three people were transported from the scene. None of the injuries were life-threatening. Three or four vehicles were on the bridge when it fell, Jones said.
