Recently, rumors about the iPhone 9 or iPhone SE 2 have been percolating, and there's a lot to be excited about. The phone would mark the first follow-up to the 2016 iPhone SE, which was a huge success for Apple. Part of its popularity was the SE's $399 price, making it the first "budget" iPhone. But a significant part of the appeal was how small it was. It's absolutely tiny by today's standards.

CNET editors Vanessa Hand Orellana and Patrick Holland really want the iPhone 9 to be small and they're worried that if it's not, many people (including them) won't buy it. With the iPhone XR and 11, Apple proved it can create phones packed with value. But hopefully the company can make a truly small and modern iPhone.

The Motorola Razr is one of a handful of foldable phones you can actually buy along with the Samsung Galaxy Fold, Royole Flexpai and Huawei Mate X. But it's the first to bridge the void between a modern Android phone and the familiar clamshell design of the past. I spent a week with the Motorola Razr and it's got more personality than its rivals. The Razr survived snow, two airplane trips, half a dozen cab rides, a hotel, various pockets, a backpack and a house with a cat. But as much as I'm enamored with the $1,500 flip phone, I still have anxiety about its long-term durability.

The iPhone SE from 2016 was Apple's first budget phone and a new version of it called the iPhone 9 or iPhone SE 2 might be coming out this spring. Rumors of an iPhone SE 2 have been percolating for a couple of years, and the timing couldn't be better.

But in order for the iPhone 9 to be a success it needs to recapture some of that original iPhone SE mojo. With the iPhone XR and 11, Apple proved it can create phones packed with value. And it seems likely that the company could do the same for a truly budget iPhone.
