ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. — Authorities in North Carolina are investigating a deadly shooting that left three people dead, including a 3-year-old girl.

Police in Elizabeth City says the three people were reportedly shot to death inside a vehicle on Thursday.

According to the Daily Advance, the shooting happened around 5 p.m.

Police say once officers arrived on scene, they found several people who were suffering from gunshot wounds. The victims died as a result of their injuries.

Councilman Michael Brooks told News 3 the Pasquotank County Sheriff's Office told him two adults and a young child died from gunshot wounds.

Later Thursday night, Elizabeth City Police identified the victims as 18-year-old Jaquan White of Elizabeth City; 39-year-old De‘Shay Berry of Manteo; and 3-year-old Allura Pledger of Manteo.

A person at the scene told the Daily Advance law enforcement officers had blocked access to the neighborhood and were canvassing the area for gun shell casings.

This incident happened near where deputies shot Andrew Brown Jr. as they were serving a warrant on April 21.

The car that was involved in the shooting was towed away around 9 p.m. The vehicle’s entire back window was shattered, due to what police say were gunshots.

Police have not released a motive nor any suspect information.

This is still an active investigation.

On Friday morning, News 3 arrived at the scene around 6 a.m., and there was still a police presence and the crime scene was still blocked off.

News 3 Reporter Anthony Sabella found what appeared to be bullet holes in cars and buildings around the crime scene.

One man who owns properties in the area, including a hair salon across the street from where the shootings happened said it sounded like a "war zone" Thursday night.

If you know anything about this shooting, you are asked to contact the Elizabeth City Police Department at (252) 335-4321 or call the Crime Line at (252) 335-5555.

Scripps station WTKR first reported this story.

ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. — For nearly a dozen nights, Josh Grooten has taken to the streets of his hometown, Elizabeth City.

“Basically, I wanted to support my community,” Grooten said. “We're just out here making a stand. We just want the tape. That's what we want — we want the tape.”

Monday night, Grooten and others marched down Ehringhaus Street with police following closely, hours after Andrew Brown Jr.’s funeral.

Brown was shot and killed by a Pasoquotank County sheriff's deputy on April 21. His death added to the list of officer-involved deaths that have led to protests across the country, including several days of peaceful ones in Elizabeth City.

“It's crazy what's going on right now, and I love my daddy to death,” one of Brown’s sons said at his funeral Monday.

Brown's family and civil rights leaders, including Rev. Al Sharpton, joined the message protesters have voiced for nearly two weeks since Brown's death, calling for answers and the release of the body cam footage related to the shooting.

“This must stop,” Sharpton said. “I come in Jesus’s name to stand up for a Black man that might've had a record, but he had a right to live his life.”

Meanwhile, for Grooten, he said what drives him to keep protesting is to keep the pressure on.

“We want answers, and we're asking for answers, and we won't stop until we get answers,” he said.

Law enforcement did not respond when asked if any arrests were made during Monday night's demonstrations.

While video footage of the shooting has not been made public, the sheriff's department showed Brown's family and their lawyers a a 20-second portion of the video last week. Brown's claims the video showed an "execution."

An autopsy commissioned by Brown's family and their lawyers showed that he was shot five times during the incident — four times in his arm, and once in the back of the head.

Meanwhile, the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) and FBI are both investigating the shooting, and Governor Roy Cooper has called for a special prosecutor to handle the case.

ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. — Nearly three weeks after his death, Andrew Brown Jr.’s family and attorneys watched more body cam footage from the deadly deputy shooting of the 42-year-old Black man.

As they went inside the Public Safety Center, protesters and activists gathered outside, echoing calls for accountability, transparency and public release of the video.

“Transparency precedes trust,” said Rev. Dr. T. Anthony Spearman, President of the North Carolina NAACP. “These family members certainly deserve to be able to trust those who are sent to protect them.”

Peaceful protests continued Tuesday night after Brown's family and attorneys viewed more footage capturing the incident.

“He wasn’t in the wrong at all. What’s in the dark is going to come to light,” said Brown’s son, Khalil Ferebee.

“My father did not deserve to die at all,” said another one of Brown’s sons, Jha’rod Ferebee. “He did not deserve to get killed.”

Emotions were high after family and attorneys viewed the video.

“They [Brown’s sons] had to go through and endure something over the last two hours that not many of us can ever imagine,” Brown family attorney Bakari Sellers said. “For them, this is a pain that induces anger, outrage, disbelief, shock. This is pain for this community. This is pain for Black men and women all across the country.”

Attorneys, family members and protesters say they'll continue raising their voices peacefully.

“If you want peace, go out here and give us justice,” Sellers said.

Pasquotank County Sheriff Tommy Wooten II said in a video posted to Facebook Tuesday, "We showed all the footage authorized by the courts to the Brown family."
