Ford Motor Company is recalling more than 150,000 vehicles for safety concerns related to airbags after losing track of some of the "obsolete" pieces.

In a notice posted this week, the company says some vehicles “may have had obsolete Takata service parts installed in collision and theft repairs after the Takata recall was completed.”

The company said a few dozen recalled pieces could not be located when the service part was purged, and they are recalling about 154,000 vehicles that may have had them installed during a repair.

“Following extensive investigation and tracing, Ford could not account for some of the obsolete Takata service parts, indicating they may have been installed on vehicles as part of collision or theft repairs,” the statement reads. They also said they were issuing the recall at the request of the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

This recall includes about 153,000 Rangers from 2004 to 2006.

Another recall, also over concerns about obsolete Takata air bag parts, includes about 1,100 vehicles. These include certain Rangers, Mustangs, GTs, Fusions and Edges from 2004 to 2012.

WEST CHICAGO, IL — Breathing new life into discarded items takes vision, and an artist is doing just that every time he walks past a discarded bin of knickknacks.

Most people would probably toss out a bucket full of old springs, valves, and rusty gears, but not Randy Meyers. He uses these recycled materials to create new-age, functional art.

“Most of these are used fittings or obsolete,” he said pointing to a bin full of parts.

Over the years, Meyers has painstakingly curated all the ‘junk’ in his garage.

“I never incorporate plastic, you know, maybe some wood, copper, aluminum. But it's all got to be pretty old and unique. It's got to have a look,” said Meyers.

For Meyers, the workshop clutter is a treasure trove of possibilities.

“They asked me, ‘What are you going to do with that?’ It's like, ‘You're never going to understand.’ I knew exactly. I'm going to have some big wire coming down and then I'll rewire that for a 110 light. It'll be a desk lamp.”

When he sees a random piece like a car bumper part, he has a vision of what he'll do with it.

“Oh, yeah, yeah. This is because people can relate to this. I mean, older people,” he said. “The kids nowadays wouldn't even believe that came off a car. [There’s] more steel in here than a car these days.”

Using old equipment, vintage car parts, gears, and pipe fittings, Meyers makes retro-futuristic designs with a turn-of-the-century aesthetic that would likely make Nikola Tesla and Thomas Edison envious.

“Everything is old that I'm working with like these are old lampshades from the 50s. The lamp would go in there and a big shade would screw on that and would shine down on something.”

The tinkering artist has created some 400 pieces, mostly lamps, all of them are now numbered and signed.

“There's a dimmer switch in this tin here. You can control the light,” he said, pointing to one lamp built out of a series of gears and an animatronic figurine. “I dim him way down just to make it look like that's a little factory, and this guy is cranking the crank and the generator to power the light.”

The first time he discovered he could make a cell phone speaker out of old record player parts he didn’t sleep all night.

“It’s louder than the phone itself.”

Like the gears spinning on his creations, his mind is always turning with ideas buzzing.

“Gauges, the bigger ones like this one, it's such a cool gauge. I'll probably just leave it the way it is, but if this was a little nastier, I would take the guts out of it, put a little quartz movement in it make a clock out of it," he explained.

The conservation artworks are show-stoppers at markets and local exhibitions.

But for Meyers, it’s not just about the sales. It’s about seeing the vision and reassembling the puzzle.

“I think creating something out of basically nothing is -- that's the magic," he said.

From the outside of Raymond's Office Machine & Supplies, you’d never know what lies beneath the alley shop. When you step inside, the more than 50 years of sales and service become evident.

“This is a Hermes. It’s a model 300 typewriter. These are made in Switzerland. It’s one of the top of the line portable manual typewriter," said Darwin Raymond, the owner.

To call Raymond’s skills unique would be an understatement. The same goes for his assistant, JJ the cockatoo.

“..like I said if he takes something apart, you can almost never get it back together," Raymond said.

Most of the time, he’s looking over Raymond’s shoulder as he plucks and pulls moves and maneuvers to fix every kind of typewriter. It's a skill Raymond never thought would be needed in 2021.

“Oh I thought it was dead 30 years ago and there wasn’t much going on, people just throwing typewriters away, going on with the new computers and printers and everything," Raymond said. "The typewriter stuff has come back. It’s evolved back.”

Not even the newest technology is distracting the younger generations from this 1800s invention.

“They are tired of all the computer electronic stuff. I think they are kind of going back," Raymond said. "Something that they can hit a key and see it print and it’s not going anywhere else.”

In the last two years, Raymond has watched them return to popularity.

“I get equipment and calls from all over the United States," Raymond said. "And they call me for all kinds of stuff. A lot of times they say, 'I want a certain typewriter, a certain type style, a certain color,' and because of what I have, probably 60, 70% of the time, I can fulfill what they want.”

If you want a typewriter to come back to life, Raymond is one of the few people who can make that happen.

“The problem with these is finding parts," Raymond said. “If I don’t have it, there are very few people I can get it from.”

Thousands of parts and dozens of machines all fixed for use.

“I have probably over 100 different machines down in my basement," Raymond said. “It’s just a resurgence. I can’t explain it. I don’t know why it is, but I am very thankful for it.”

There is one thing he is worried about.

“The problem is that there’s not a lot of younger people that want to work on them or learn how to work on them," Raymond said. “I’m just hopeful somebody will come along that will want to learn how to do that and maybe take over my position someday.”
