Some of the Georgia Aquarium's most playful and popular mammals have tested positive for COVID-19.

The Asian small-clawed otters had been showing mild symptoms like sneezing, coughing and lack of energy. Veterinarians believe the otters caught the virus from an asymptomatic staff members.

The otters haven't had any contact with guests at the Atlanta facility, so they shouldn't post any risk of spreading coronavirus to visitors.

Researchers say animal to human transmission is rare. Although the otters are considered to be geriatric, the older animals seem to be recovering well.

However, they will remain off exhibit until they no longer test positive for COVID-19.
