AKRON, Ohio — Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy won its first state baseball championship Sunday afternoon with a 4-1 victory over Archbold in the Division III state final at Canal Park.

"It's unbelievable," CHCA coach Tony Schulz said. "The CHCA community is awesome. I couldn't be more humbled, couldn't be more honored to bring a state title back to our campus."

CHCA (23-8) won the program's first state title in its fourth state tournament appearance. The Eagles were a 2014 state runner-up.

Junior Cooper Robinson threw a two-hitter to help lead the Eagles. He struck out 11 Archbold batters and allowed just one run on one walk. His command was superb all day, Schulz said.

Junior Colin Ames was 2-for-3 including a double, two RBI and a run scored. Junior Ty Yelton was 2-for-3.

Ames hit with a double to left center in the bottom of the second inning that scored sophomore Johnathan Russell and junior Andrew Brock. Ames later scored on an error.

Junior Jack Vogele reached on a fielding error which allowed Yelton to score. Vogele said the state title has meant so much to the team.

"It's the best feeling in the world," Vogele said. "It almost made me cry tears of joy. Nothing can relate to this."

Rain accompanied the Eagles along the way to Akron. This weekend's state tournament was postponed a day due to weather. But, the Eagles made the most of its opportunity.

CHCA defeated Barnesville 7-1 in a Division III state semifinal on Friday.

On Sunday, the state final was delayed nearly an hour due to rain but the Eagles didn't seem to mind. CHCA scored four runs in the second inning to take an early lead on Archbold.

It is the first Ohio High School Athletic Association state baseball title for a Greater Cincinnati team since Moeller (Division I) won in 2015.

Later today, Elder (25-8) plays New Albany (28-5) in the Division I state final at 7 p.m.

AKRON, Ohio — Elder High School won't soon forget its 2021 baseball team.

The Panthers completed their memorable season as the Division I state runner-up late Sunday night at Canal Park in Akron. New Albany defeated Elder 6-5.

Despite an early deficit, the Panthers rallied late in the game with a thrilling sixth inning.

The Panthers (25-9) scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning and almost tied the game in a remarkable turn of events.

Elder senior Marco Sabato had a two-run single with one out in the sixth to help close the gap at 6-3. His single scored senior Brian Weber and junior Jeremy Ward. Weber had a one-out single up the middle to start the offensive attack.

Later, sophomore Kevin Hilton scored on a passed ball to make it 6-4. Sabato scored when sophomore Luke Vaughn singled left through the left side to close the gap to 6-5.

But the Panthers stranded runners at first and third to end the inning.

New Albany (29-5) was able to close out the game in the bottom of the seventh inning on three batters for its second state baseball title.

New Albany earned the early momentum Sunday night in a game that didn't start until after 9 p.m. due to the state tournament being delayed earlier in the day due to rain.

New Albany scored three runs in the top of the first inning to take an early lead.

The Panthers responded in the bottom half of the first inning when senior Zak Schlachter singled up the middle with two outs to score Vaughn to close the gap to 3-1.

New Albany scored two runs in the third and one in the fourth inning for a 6-1 lead.

Elder reached the state final for the first time since 2010, when it was a Division I state runner-up.

The Panthers defeated Toledo St. John's Jesuit 4-1 in the state semifinal on Saturday. It was the seventh consecutive win for the Panthers, who also won regional and district championships on the journey to Akron.

Elder coach Mark Thompson also earned his 600th career win in the Panthers' 3-0 win over Beavercreek in the district final May 27 at Vandalia Butler.

Elder earned its 21st trip to the state tournament. Elder has won 12 state titles in program history.

New Albany was in its second state baseball tournament. New Albany won the Division III state championship in 2004.

AKRON, Ohio — The Ohio High School Athletic Association announced Wednesday afternoon that the state baseball tournament in Akron has been postponed a day due to expected rain and storms on Thursday.

The scheduled start times and order of games all remain the same, but the state tournament will shift to a Friday-Saturday-Sunday schedule.

The 93rd state baseball tournament was scheduled to begin Thursday at Canal Park in downtown Akron. Instead, it will start Friday morning.

Due to pitch count limitations in baseball, the OHSAA always wants to keep both semifinal games of each division on the same day so that both finalists played their semifinal games on the same day.

Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy is scheduled to play the first overall game in this year's tournament at 10 a.m. Friday. The Eagles (21-8) plays Barnesville (24-7) in a Division III state semifinal.

Badin (27-5) is scheduled to play Carroll Bloom-Carroll (27-5) in a Division II state semifinal at 4 p.m. Friday instead of Thursday.

Elder (24-8) plays Toledo St. John's Jesuit (24-6) in a Division I state semifinal at 4 p.m. Saturday instead of Friday.

The state championship games are scheduled for Sunday.

Home of the Cleveland Indians’ AA affiliate Akron RubberDucks, Canal Park first hosted the OHSAA baseball state tournament in 2019.

Tickets that have been purchased will automatically work for the re-scheduled game time—there is nothing different the user needs to do.
