<p>RODANTHE, N.C. — The National Park Service says two beach houses have fallen into the waves along North Carolina's coast. The homes, which were unoccupied when they fell into the ocean, were located along Ocean Drive in the Outer Banks community of Rodanthe. </p>
<p> <iframe src="https://www.facebook.com/plugins/video.php?height=476&amp;href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2FCapeHatterasNS%2Fvideos%2F1124971368360690%2F&amp;show_text=false&amp;width=267&amp;t=0" width="267" height="476" style="border:none;overflow:hidden" scrolling="no" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen="true" allow="autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; picture-in-picture; web-share"></iframe></p>
<p>The park service confirmed the collapses on Tuesday and has closed off the areas around the fallen structures. Debris from the first fallen house has spread widely. Officials from the Cape Hatteras National Seashore say they'll be working closely with the homeowner to coordinate cleanup activities. This is the third time a Rodanthe home has fallen into the surf this year.</p>
<figure class="Figure" itemscope="" itemtype="https://schema.org/ImageObject"></figure>
<p>“Unfortunately, there may be more houses that collapse onto Seashore beaches in the near future,” David Hallac, superintendent of National Parks of Eastern North Carolina, <a class="Link" href="https://apnews.com/article/environment-north-carolina-national-park-service-950b7804ae04d5798665429cc5afa226" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> in a statement obtained by the Associated Press. “We proactively reached out to homeowners along Ocean Drive in Rodanthe after the first house collapse and recommended that actions be taken to prevent collapse and impacts to Cape Hatteras National Seashore.”</p>
<p>The coast of North Carolina is almost entirely made up of narrow, low-lying barrier islands. Hatteras Island is part of what’s known as the Outer Banks.</p>

<p>Authorities in North Carolina say several members of a Texas family were arrested for allegedly robbing a Waffle House they had just eaten at.</p>
<p>According to the Hillsborough Police Department, Tamiko Lashun Jones and Tony Eugene Lemon, both of Marshall, Texas, and Diamond Walton, of Longview, Texas, were arrested in Western North Carolina on Wednesday.</p>
<p><iframe loading="lazy" src="https://www.facebook.com/plugins/post.php?href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2FHillsboroughPoliceDepartment%2Fposts%2Fpfbid02SEWDbYPrzjHvEZrurmpJs8Q9Y2pZ2Rf4XGE9AJDJbJ6PX951z1jEPkkik7Vg43rJl&amp;show_text=true&amp;width=500" width="500" height="571" style="border:none;overflow:hidden" scrolling="no" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen="true" allow="autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; picture-in-picture; web-share"></iframe></p>
<p>Police said Jones, Lemon, and Walton were part of a family of six who entered the Waffle House and sat down to eat. </p>
<p>After the meal, police said Lemon allegedly took out a handgun and demanded money from the employees before he fled to a nearby gas station, where he had parked.</p>
<p>Officials said the suspects then left in two separate vehicles.</p>
<p>According to the department, they secured warrants Tuesday for the arrest of Jones, Lemon, and Walton.</p>
<p>They have each been charged with robbery with a dangerous weapon, conspiracy to commit armed robbery, and defrauding an innkeeper, police said.</p>
<p>Officials said the suspects have similar outstanding charges from an incident in Minden, Louisiana, that occurred a few days prior to Monday's robbery.</p>
<p>Police said the suspects could face additional charges.</p>

TO YOUR PHONE. WE’LL KNOW IT FOR 30 OR TRY OUT. A WOMAN IS ASKING THE COMMUNITY FOR HELP AFTER SHE LOST A BRACELET IN FORSYTH COUNTY. SHE EXPLAINED TO WXII SIZE MARIAN DEBONE WHY THE BRACELET MEANS SO MUCH TO HER. IT’S A HEART AND IT HAS. ON ONE SIDE, IT SAYS ZACHARY JAMES CLODFELTER, 730, 20, 21, AND ON THE OTHER SIDE IT HAS WINGS AT THE TOP. AND IT SAYS, YOUR HEART, YOUR WINGS ARE READY. BUT MY HEART WAS NOT WORKING. CLODFELTER WAS PREGNANT WITH HER THIRD CHILD, A BABY BOY, WHEN SHE STARTED HAVING COMPLICATIONS SINCE SHE DELIVERED HIM. BUT HE DIED SHORTLY AFTER I WOKE UP IN RECOVERY, AND MY HUSBAND WAS SITTING THERE HOLDING MY HAND AND I ASKED WHERE MY BABY WAS, AND HE SAID, HE’S BEING CARE OF. WE’RE GOING TO DO THE RIGHT THING. MORGAN’S BABY ZACHARY WAS CREMATED, AND SOME OF THE ASHES WERE PUT INTO THE BRACELET. I’M NOT ABLE TO PHYSICALLY HOLD MY BABY. BUT I ALWAYS WANTED TO HAVE A PIECE OF HIM WITH ME. WE. YOU KNOW, IT’S OKAY TO HAVE THIS URN SITTING ON THE TABLE THAT WE HAVE FOR HIM AT HOME. BUT TO BE ABLE TO WEAR A PIECE OF HIM, IT MEANT A LOT. MORGAN SAID SHE WAS WEARING IT WHILE RUNNING ERRANDS HERE IN THE WINSTON-SALEM ELAM CLEMMONS AREA MONDAY AND SHE GOT HOME. SHE REALIZED IT WASN’T ON HER WRIST ANY MORE. I LOOKED IN MY CAR THAT’S GOING BACK TO TARGET STARBUCKS. THE CHICK FILLET, THE LOWES FOODS AFTER ALL MY STEPS. NOW SHE’S ASKING THE PUBLIC THEIR HELP IN FINDING IT. I JUST HOPE THAT THEY LOOK DOWN AND HOPEFULLY SOMEBODY SEES IT, FIX IT UP AND THEY’RE GENEROUS ENOUGH TO FIND ME OR WHAT OF MY FAMILY MEMBERS AND RETURN IT BACK TO US. MORGAN’S CONTACT INFORMATION AND PICTURES OF THE BRACELET CAN BE FOUND ON WXII 12. WELCOME AND WINSTON SAL

<p>The outages began just after 7 p.m. Saturday after someone pulled up and opened fire on the substations, which are owned by Duke Energy, Moore County Sheriff Ronnie Fields said Sunday at a news conference, the Associated Press reported.</p>
<p>In response to the outages, a state of emergency was announced, including a curfew from 9 p.m. Sunday to 5 a.m. Monday, the Associated Press reported.</p>
<p>Moore County Schools, which was closed Monday, remained closed Tuesday, the district said in a tweet.</p>
<p>Fields said the incident is being investigated as a criminal act, adding that "it was targeted," the news outlet reported. </p>

Known infamously as the Unabomber. Ted Kaczynski was serving eight live sentences for his 17 year deadly reign of terror. When he died Saturday, prison officials tell CNN the ailing 81 year old was found unresponsive in *** cell overnight his cause of death not yet released in December 2021 Kaczynski was transferred to *** federal medical facility in Butner, North Carolina used to house inmates with health conditions. I think it's very important for transparency reasons to fully understand the circumstances, the death. But I would caution speculation at this point. We don't really have any reason to believe anything untoward happened here just yet. Andrew mccabe is *** former FBI deputy director who was with the bureau as agents closed the Unabomber case. It was in 1978 when Kaczynski started his campaign of violence by leaving *** mail bomb in *** parking lot at *** Chicago University. He would go on to plant explosives on an airplane, university buildings and by computer stores. He also mailed powerful bombs to university professors and business executives. By the time he was arrested in 1996 his 16 devices killed three innocent people and injured 23 others. His own words published in *** manifesto were what eventually led FBI agents to his off the grid primitive cabin in the woods of Montana tipped off by Kaczynski's own brother. He pursued this bombing campaign as *** way of striking back against technological advancement which he believed was damaging the environment in ways that needed to be stopped. Before becoming prolific bomber. Kaczynski was *** high school honor student in Illinois who enrolled at Harvard at just 16. It was during his college years that Kaczynski took *** dark turn, recalled his brother, Ted was withdrawing. There wasn't the desire to come home and enjoy the family as part of *** deal with prosecutors to dodge the death penalty. Kaczynski admitted to the bombings and was sent to Colorado's super max prison where he remained until his medical transfer at the time of Kaczynski's 1998 sentencing, the widow of victim Jill Murray wrote he will never ever kill again.

Ted Kaczynski, the man known as the “Unabomber,” was found dead in his prison cell Saturday morning, according to a Bureau of Prisons spokesperson. Kaczynski was found dead around 8 a.m. at a federal prison in North Carolina. A cause of death was not immediately known. He was 81. Kaczynski was arrested in 1996 after building and mailing bombs for 17 years. He first came to the attention of law enforcement in 1978 when his first bomb exploded in Chicago at a university. His bombs were untraceable, according to the FBI, and were delivered to random targets. The bombs he created killed three Americans and injured nearly two dozen more, according to the FBI.He lived in the mountains of Montana in a cabin. When he was arrested, authorities found bomb components, 40,000 journal pages that talked about the bombs and one live bomb, which was ready to be mailed. He pleaded guilty in January 1998. He spent two decades in a federal Supermax prison in Colorado then was moved to the federal prison medical facility in North Carolina.

A North Carolina man who often teaches in Ukraine, recently received a message from one of his students, asking him to pray for his family. Sister station WXII spoke with Herbert Burns, Jr. of Winston-Salem, who is a board member for the Triad Success Partners. Before the pandemic began, Burns and several members of the organization would fly to Ukraine to teach people how to run businesses every year. For the past seven years, he said people from different industries — recreational facilities, agricultural, medical, marketing, faith, etc. — would take part in his leadership and marketing programs in Ukraine. This week, one of his students messaged him amid the Ukraine and Russia crisis."At 3:25 am two days ago, I got a message from Elsey Pronin, saying please pray for us." Burns said. "I was almost in tears. It broke my heart."Burns, Pronin, and a couple of other good friends gathered on a virtual meeting to pray together. Burns said he considers Pronin as family. "I felt like a family member in need. Because he’s like a dear family member. He’s like a brother to me. If you have children, and your children get hurt, you know how you feel for your children. I felt the same way for Elsey and his family," Burns said.Pronin told Burns that his family and many others were in danger. "He said there’s going to be thousands of refugees coming from the east and they’re going to need places to stay," Burns said. However, instead of running away from danger, Pronin traveled toward it."He was getting ready to head east into the storm to see how he can help others. He was headed toward the battle to see what he can do to save other people," Burns said. Burns said he last spoke with Pronin through Facebook messenger on Thursday. However, Pronin responded with "I can't talk."Burns still keeps in touch with a number of his students in Ukraine, he said, and worries about many of them."I can't reach out and physically help him. It just broke my heart. I can't reach out and grab him. Let me hug you. Let me help you. What can I do?" Burns said.

<p>LELAND, N.C. — Buildings are knocked down every day to make way for new construction. </p>
<p>But in one community, people are coming together to rebuild an old chapel to preserve and honor its history.</p>
<p>If you look past the cobwebs and chipped paint, this building has a story to tell.</p>
<p>“Reaves Chapel is located on the banks of Cape Fear River, and we’re estimating that it was built by former enslaved African Americans on the Cedar Hill Plantation right around the 1850s, 1860s,” Al Beatty, the president of the Cedar Hill/West Bank Heritage Foundation, said.</p>
<p>It was moved to the lot it sits on now in the early 1900s, just outside Wilmington, North Carolina.</p>
<p>“It became active and stayed active until roughly 2005,” Beatty said. “The church was deteriorating pretty rapidly.”</p>
<p>Beatty has been visiting this building most of his life. </p>
<p>“Around 1955, 1956 somewhere in that time frame,” he explained. </p>
<p>“I grew up in the community here. I can walk to the church from my house.”</p>
<p>So he decided to create the Cedar Hill/West Bank Heritage Foundation to restore it. </p>
<p>With the help of partner organizations and fundraising, renovations started about three months ago. </p>
<p>They are trying to preserve every part possible, including the original bell which currently sits in storage.</p>
<p>“Historic preservation is important for a variety of reasons. First of all, when you preserve the built history of a community it grounds your community, to give your community a sense of place, a sense of identity, of uniqueness,” Travis Gilbert, executive director of the Historic Wilmington Foundation, said.</p>
<p>The nonprofit provides resources in the community to preserve the area’s history. </p>
<p>It has also played a role in restoring Reaves Chapel.</p>
<p>“Our region has lacked the preservation and interpretation of Black historic sites, and the preservation of Reaves Chapel is one of many efforts to bring that history back to the forefront of our shared experience,” he explained.</p>
<p>“This particular structure is at the northern range of the Gullah Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor, which is a national park service corridor identified specifically because of the culture of the descendants of the people, the Gullah Geechee, from West Africa that were brought over specifically for their knowledge of rice cultivation,” Jesica Blake, associate director of the North Carolina Coastal Land Trust, said.</p>
<p>The land trust has partnered with Beatty’s foundation for the past six years to help buy and preserve the chapel.</p>
<p>“It’s American history that hasn't been told really well and this structure is a piece of that history,” Blake said.</p>
<p>“It’s the oldest building, African American structure in this area. You have to realize after slavery because of the laws and because of Jim Crow, African Americans weren't allowed to socialize at a lot of other public places, so churches and schools were very instrumental,” Beatty said.</p>
<p>He said the project sends a message about preserving this piece of the past. </p>
<p>“It’s not being wiped out as other history in the country had been,” he said.</p>
<p>The plan is for the building to be finished by the end of the year. </p>
<p>While it may never hold services again, Beatty and Blake hope it will be accepted by the state as a historical site, with the original bell and all.</p>
<p>“This was our venue for outside letting us know there was a bigger world than just here,” Beatty said.</p>

<p>A North Carolina community is heartbroken after a police trooper died in a tragic car crash Monday night.</p>
<p>Trooper John Horton was pronounced dead at a Spartanburg hospital after suffering injuries in a crash involving a police cruiser driven by his brother, Trooper James Horton.</p>
<p>A motorcyclist that John Horton had pulled over also died in the collision.</p>
<p>"He's one of the greatest men I ever met," said James Lovelace, a family friend of the Hortons.</p>
<p>Lovelace arrived on the scene after hearing the crash just outside his home in Rutherford County.</p>
<p>"I knew just as soon as I seen him who it was," Lovelace said. "He's gone. All his kids. His wife. Why couldn't they have picked somebody else?"</p>
<p>Some in the area came by Tuesday to place markers at the scene. Others came by to pay their respects to the men who died there.</p>
<p>Friends say James Horton — who goes by Nick — was inspired to go into law enforcement because of his older brother's dedication.</p>
<p>"It's probably like a bad dream to him this morning. Like a bad dream you just can't get out of," family friend Anthony Smith said.</p>
<p>Colonel Freddy L. Johnson Jr., the commander of the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, released a statement honoring the fallen trooper.</p>
<p>"Our hearts are broken with the loss of our friend and our brother, Trooper John Horton. For all involved in this tragic event the coming days will undoubtedly be difficult, but we are committed to stand alongside with them with our thoughts, prayers, and unwavering support," Johnson's statement read.</p>
<p>Back the Blue NC told <a class="Link" href="https://www.cnn.com/2022/01/04/us/north-carolina-state-trooper-john-horton-dies-after-hit-by-brother-trnd/index.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">CNN</a> that the organization started a <a class="Link" href="https://www.gofundme.com/f/benefit-for-family-of-trooper-john-horton?utm_campaign=p_cp+share-sheet&amp;utm_medium=copy_link_all&amp;utm_source=customer" target="_blank" rel="noopener">GoFundMe </a>to assist the family with funeral costs.</p>

<p>ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. — Authorities in North Carolina are investigating a deadly shooting that left three people dead, including a 3-year-old girl.</p>
<p>Police in Elizabeth City says the three people were reportedly shot to death inside a vehicle on Thursday.</p>
<p><a class="Link" href="https://www.dailyadvance.com/news/local/responder-3-people-shot-to-death-in-car-in-ec/article_0fe000bd-5ee5-5f27-a438-b43a4680bcb8.html">According to the Daily Advance,</a> the shooting happened around 5 p.m. </p>
<p>Police say once officers arrived on scene, they found several people who were suffering from gunshot wounds. The victims died as a result of their injuries. </p>
<p>Councilman Michael Brooks told News 3 the Pasquotank County Sheriff's Office told him two adults and a young child died from gunshot wounds.</p>
<p>Later Thursday night, Elizabeth City Police identified the victims as 18-year-old Jaquan White of Elizabeth City; 39-year-old De‘Shay Berry of Manteo; and 3-year-old Allura Pledger of Manteo. </p>
<p>A person at the scene told the Daily Advance law enforcement officers had blocked access to the neighborhood and were canvassing the area for gun shell casings.</p>
<p>This incident happened near where <a class="Link" href="https://www.wtkr.com/news/citizen-shot-fatally-wounded-by-police-while-search-warrant-served-in-elizabeth-city">deputies shot Andrew Brown Jr. as they were serving a warrant on April 21.</a></p>
<p>The car that was involved in the shooting was towed away around 9 p.m. The vehicle’s entire back window was shattered, due to what police say were gunshots.</p>
<p>Police have not released a motive nor any suspect information. </p>
<p>This is still an active investigation.</p>
<p>On Friday morning, News 3 arrived at the scene around 6 a.m., and there was still a police presence and the crime scene was still blocked off.</p>
<p>News 3 Reporter Anthony Sabella found what appeared to be bullet holes in cars and buildings around the crime scene.</p>
<p>One man who owns properties in the area, including a hair salon across the street from where the shootings happened said it sounded like a "war zone" Thursday night.</p>
<p>If you know anything about this shooting, you are asked to contact the Elizabeth City Police Department at (252) 335-4321 or call the Crime Line at (252) 335-5555. </p>
<p><i>Scripps station WTKR first reported this story.</i></p>

A student died on Wednesday after being shot at a North Carolina high school, according to authorities. Authorities said the shooter is believed to be a fellow student and has been taken into custody.Winston-Salem police Chief Catrina Thompson, fighting back tears, told a news conference that Mount Tabor High School went into immediate lockdown as emergency responders, sheriff’s deputies and police officers arrived just after noon to search for the suspect, who she said was believed to be a student at the school. The student killed at Mount Tabor High School has been identified as William Chavis Raynard Miller Jr. He was taken to a hospital, where he died, Thompson said. "I haven’t cried in a while, but I've been crying since I left the hospital," said Forsyth County Sheriff Bobby Kimbrough Jr.The campus was placed on a lockdown after the shooting happened at about 12:05 p.m., and deputies with the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office confirmed all other students were safe. Agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives also responded to the incident, according to the agency’s Charlotte office.Police blocked roads to the school, which has an enrollment of more than 1,500 students, and numerous emergency vehicles were on the scene. Parents frantic for information parked their cars on the sidewalks several blocks from the school as police directed traffic away from campus. Students and parents could be seen walking toward a nearby shopping center.Christopher Johnson said his son told him that he heard the gunshots while in the school gym and students were told to hide because there was an active shooter on campus."It’s scary to know that it actually reached out and touched you this time. My son’s not a victim, but he’s part of this and he’ll probably remember this forever," said Johnson, whose son was still at the school awaiting transportation to a pickup point.

While cleaning a picture frame, a hope chest thrift employee found a nearly 150 year old marriage license nailed inside the back. It was so old only the year city and couples first name's William and Katie are eligible and this couple was married in New Jersey and somehow the certificate found its way to a thrift store on old Ocean highway in Bolivia north Carolina a unique find. So W. W. A. Y. Aired a story on the discovery not long after while home in upstate new york William and Katie Duckworth's great granddaughter, Irene cornish decided to log into ancestry dot com on a whim I haven't been on ancestry in quite a few months but was actually went on to research a family member on the other side and I happened to notice I had these messages, messages from viewers who were able to track cornish down. The cornish doesn't know how this love story began. She knows her great grandmother. Catherine have moved to America toward the end of the irish potato famine. Her great grandfather, William Dolworth had his own ventriloquist e and fire eating acts. But some questions still remain. Now though we don't know exactly why that marriage certificate was hidden in the back of that frame. We do know that according to ancestry dot com William and Catherine had a child out of wedlock two years before their marriage certificate was filed and how the frame wound up in north Carolina, sadly the family homestead, the person that inherited that in the family at one point basically sold everything that was in it to a local thrift shop and ultimately lost their homes. Though the mystery isn't completely solved, cornish says she feels more connected than ever to family. She's only heard stories about when my mother passed away five years ago. I don't have any family immediate family in the area where I live, so I feel a little isolated at times and so it just felt comforting that most of these people are reaching out somehow. I am connected in Brunswick county Peyton Furtado, W W A. Y News.

<p>CATAWA, N.C. – Narcotics investigators in North Carolina say they came across a firearm disguised as a toy while executing a search warrant at a home Wednesday.</p>
<p>The Catawba County Sheriff’s Office says it worked with the Newton Police Department to search the residence in Catawba after gathering evidence of narcotics possession at the location.</p>
<p>During their search, investigators say they seized quantities of cocaine, psilocybin mushrooms and marijuana, as well as $2,300 in cash and 20 guns.</p>
<p>The firearms included pistols, rifles and shotguns. The sheriff’s office says one of the weapons, a converted Glock model 19 pistol with a 50 round drum magazine, “had been altered to resemble a toy Nerf gun.”</p>
<p>The sheriff’s office noted that it’s not illegal to possess these types of firearms, but officers said the guns “are concerning to law enforcement.”</p>
<p>As a result of the search, 35-year-old Damien Alonzo Burch was arrested and charged with felonious possession of cocaine, felonious possession of mushrooms and misdemeanor possession of marijuana.</p>
<p>“Another success resulting from our area narcotics teams working together. Our agencies pooling their resources allows for a greater impact to be felt county wide,” said Sheriff Don Brown in a <a class="Link" href="https://www.facebook.com/CatawbaCountySheriff/posts/2428859550592846">statement</a>.</p>

<p>Nearly a full day after making landfall in Florida, Tropical Storm Elsa is still dumping heavy rainfall and bringing dangerous winds to the Southeast U.S.</p>
<p>As of Thursday morning at 5 a.m. ET, Elsa was located near the Georgia-South Carolina border with sustained winds of 40 mph. The <a class="Link" href="https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/graphics_at5.shtml?start#contents" target="_blank" rel="noopener">National Hurricane Center</a> (NHC) forecasts that the storm will continue to move northeast through the weekend, hugging the Eastern Seaboard up into Canada.</p>
<p>The NHC says Elsa poses a threat for "limited flash and urban flooding" across the Carolinas on Thursday. Tropical storm conditions are expected on the coasts of North Carolina throughout the day, and the Mid-Atlantic will see similar conditions in the region by Thursday night.</p>
<p>Later in the week, the system will dump heavy rainfall from the Mid-Atlantic into New England, which could lead to additional flooding.</p>
<p>Elsa made <a class="Link" href="https://www.wtxl.com/news/national/tropical-storm-elsa-kills-1-in-florida-injures-10-in-georgia-as-it-moves-up-east-coast" target="_blank" rel="noopener">landfall</a> in the "Big Bend" region of western Florida on Wednesday morning. Since then, officials have blamed the system for at least one death in Jacksonville. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis described that fatality as a "freak accident" on Thursday, saying that a tree fell on a moving car.</p>
<p>He added that Elsa had "as minimal impact as could have been anticipated" on the rest of the state.</p>
<p>In addition to the one fatality, a tornado spawned by Elsa injured another 10 people at an RV park on a Navy base in southern Georgia.</p>
<p>The system <a class="Link" href="https://www.wxyz.com/news/world/hurricane-elsa-races-toward-haiti-amid-fears-of-landslides" target="_blank" rel="noopener">killed three people in the Caribbean</a> earlier this week. </p>
<p>According to the Associated Press, one person died in St. Lucia. In the Dominican Republic, a 15-year-old boy and a 75-year-old woman died Saturday in separate events after walls collapsed on them.</p>

When Jeff Benesch realized he likely didn't have much life left to live, he decided to make the most of it. Benesch has been in and out of a North Carolina hospital for the last few months with congestive heart failure. After he recently learned that he's not eligible for a heart transplant, Benesch chose to tie the knot with his soulmate. "They told us it could be days, it could be weeks, it could be months," Sarah Myler, Benesch's girlfriend of nine years, told WRAL. "It could be any time. They don't know."Myler and Benesch got married outside of Duke Hospital, thanks to hospital staff and family members. A hospital minister performed the ceremony, while nurses organized the event. "It was important for us to have the moment together," Myler said. "I wanted that as a memory. And he wanted that as a memory."Myler said nurses lined up chairs to make an aisle and decorated for the occasion the couple says they'll cherish forever. "It's what you do for the person you love," Myler said. "You're there for them. It's till death to us part. But it's beyond that. It's forever for us. Forever — however long we have. It's forever for us." Watch the video above to learn more about this story.

The body of a fourth tuber has been found in a North Carolina river following a deadly accident in which a family on a recreational float went over a dam, local officials said Sunday. The Rockingham County Sheriff’s Office confirmed in a news release that Isiah Crawford, 7, was the person who was found in the Dan River.Another tuber, Teresa Villano, 35, is still missing. The search for her continued on Sunday, including near the Virginia state line, officials said.Emergency Services Director Rodney Cates said officials knew it was likely the victims could surface overnight Sunday as a result of increased river flow with the release of water from Belews Lake.Emergency services officials said they continue to "stand firmly behind the decision made to suspend search efforts until we had new leads upon which to search." Two watercraft searched for Villano again Sunday morning with no results. Another search was conducted near the Virginia state line, which was also unsuccessful. Emergency Services Director, Rodney Cates said the agency's thoughts and prayers go out to the victims and families of the tragic incident. Cates thanked the first responders from multiple agencies who assisted with the search operation. He also thanked the community for their support during the operation. Authorities said nine people were floating on the water on the Dan River Wednesday evening when they went over the dam near the Duke Energy facility. But emergency officials said it wasn’t until around 3 p.m. Thursday that they received a 911 phone call from a Duke Energy employee. Emergency crews rescued four people out of the water Thursday who were taken to the hospital. Page said they had a floatation device with them when they were rescued from the water."I can't imagine going over the dam and I can't imagine being down there from dark on Wednesday, 8:30, nine at night, to yesterday at 3:30 or four o’clock in the afternoon. That's got to be tough. I can't imagine that," Page said.Emergency crews rescued 35-year-old Rueben Villano, 14-year-old Eric Villano, 18-year-old Irene Villano, and 14-year-old Karlos Villano who were clinging to the dam in the river authorities said. Later that night, the bodies of 27-year-old Bridish Crawford, 30-year-old Antonio Ramon and 14-year-old Sophie Wilson were recovered. The Associated Press contributed to this report.

<p>Commissioners of a North Carolina county have voted to remove Coca-Cola machines from their office buildings in response to the company's criticism of Georgia's new voting law.</p>
<p>According to <a class="Link" href="https://www.wxii12.com/article/co-commissioner-upset-over-criticism-of-ga-voting-laws/36570551#" target="_blank" rel="noopener">WXII-TV</a>, commissioners of Surry County — a county located on the state's northern border — voted 3-2 to remove Coca-Cola machines from the buildings.</p>
<p>Coca-Cola has faced criticism among conservatives in recent months after the CEO James Quincey <a class="Link" href="https://www.newschannel5.com/news/national/growing-number-of-us-companies-express-concern-about-georgias-elections-law" target="_blank" rel="noopener">denounced a law</a> that rolled back absentee voting, early voting hours and limited ballot drop boxes in the company's home state of Georgia.</p>
<p>Surry County Commissioner Eddie Harris, who supported the measure, said the commissioners were hoping to take a stand against "cancel culture" — the act of boycotting a company or person due to political leanings or past behavior.</p>
<p>"Yes, we are trying to cancel Coca-Cola to use their tactics against them," Harris told <a class="Link" href="https://www.wral.com/we-are-trying-to-cancel-coca-cola-nc-county-bans-coke-machines-in-office-buildings/19706500/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">WRAL-TV</a>.</p>
<p>Harris told WRAL that he accepts that President Joe Biden's win in the 2020 election was legitimate but said "millions of Americans" believe the last election was "not fair" and that more laws like Georgia's will make future elections more secure.</p>
<p>Trump administration cybersecurity officials said late last year that the 2020 election was the "most secure election in American history."</p>
<p>Harris also told WXII that the response to the boycott has been "mostly positive."</p>
<p>WXII also reported that the Coca-Cola machines have not yet been removed from the buildings. Coca-Cola Consolidated — a bottling company — has reached out to the commissioners to set up a meeting.</p>

A 12-year-old in North Carolina used the downtime he had during the pandemic to take on a few extra classes in school. Now, one year later, Mike Wimmer, of Salisbury, is getting ready to graduate high school and college — in the same week.Wimmer completed four years of high school and a two-year associate's degree all in one year. He will graduate from Rowan-Cabarrus Community College on May 21, and from Concord Academy High School on May 28, where he is valedictorian. But this wasn't always Wimmer's plan, he said.Related video: Parenting Tips to Encourage Your Child’s Optimum CapabilitiesThe student was taking dual enrollment classes and realized that at the pace he was going, he just needed a few more classes to get his associate's degree by his high school graduation. He said his GPA at Rowan-Cabarrus Community College is 4.0, while his high school GPA is 5.45.A love of roboticsDespite being several years younger than his classmates, Wimmer said he gets along well with them — and was even nominated to Homecoming Court last year.Wimmer, who has an interest in robotics, told CNN that he's "the math and science guy." He's always had an affinity for technology — he got his first iPad when he was 18 months old, and wondered how it worked. He learned almost all of his programming and robotic knowledge through trial and error and online videos, according to his website, Next Era Innovations. He also created his own startup, called Reflect Social, which "combines popular social media platforms with Internet of Things (IoT) devices, providing a new dynamic social experience," according to its website.Wimmer's goal for the startup is to simplify how smart home technology works, with the ultimate goal to help others."My entrepreneurial goal is to build technology that enables people to live better lives," he said. What the future holdsWimmer's parents said they are proud of the person their son has become."If one door's locked, he'll find out another way around to figure out how to accomplish his goals," his mother, Melissa Wimmer, told CNN.With graduation just a few weeks away, Wimmer said he's weighing many options for his next steps. Those options include job offers in and out of the United States, more school, or a fellowship that will allow him to grow his startup. But he said he wants people to know that he's still a kid — he makes time for normal kid activities, such as playing basketball and building legos."A lot of people think I've given up my childhood or somehow lost it," Wimmer said, "and I say to them that I'm having the time of my life."

<p>Wimmer, who has an interest in robotics, told CNN that he's "the math and science guy." He's always had an affinity for technology — he got his first iPad when he was 18 months old, and wondered how it worked.</p>
<p>He learned almost all of his programming and robotic knowledge through trial and error and online videos, according to his website, <a href="https://nexterainnovations.com/index.php" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Next Era Innovations</a>.</p>
<p>He also created his own startup, called Reflect Social, which "combines popular social media platforms with Internet of Things (IoT) devices, providing a new dynamic social experience," <a href="https://reflect.social/#welcome" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">according to its website</a>.</p>
<p>Wimmer's goal for the startup is to simplify how smart home technology works, with the ultimate goal to help others.</p>
<p>"My entrepreneurial goal is to build technology that enables people to live better lives," he said.</p>
<h3>What the future holds</h3>
<p>Wimmer's parents said they are proud of the person their son has become.</p>
<p>"If one door's locked, he'll find out another way around to figure out how to accomplish his goals," his mother, Melissa Wimmer, told CNN.</p>
<p>With graduation just a few weeks away, Wimmer said he's weighing many options for his next steps.</p>
<p>Those options include job offers in and out of the United States, more school, or a fellowship that will allow him to grow his startup.</p>
<p>But he said he wants people to know that he's still a kid — he makes time for normal kid activities, such as playing basketball and building legos.</p>
<p>"A lot of people think I've given up my childhood or somehow lost it," Wimmer said, "and I say to them that I'm having the time of my life."</p>

<p>ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. — For nearly a dozen nights, Josh Grooten has taken to the streets of his hometown, <a class="Link" href="https://www.wtkr.com/news/protests-continue-in-elizabeth-city-following-andrew-brown-jr-s-funeral" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Elizabeth City</a>.</p>
<p>“Basically, I wanted to support my community,” Grooten said. “We're just out here making a stand. We just want the tape. That's what we want — we want the tape.”</p>
<p>Monday night, Grooten and others marched down Ehringhaus Street with police following closely, hours after <a class="Link" href="https://www.wtkr.com/news/national/mourners-gathering-monday-for-funeral-of-andrew-brown-jr" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Andrew Brown Jr.’s funeral</a>.</p>
<p><a class="Link" href="https://www.wtkr.com/news/citizen-shot-fatally-wounded-by-police-while-search-warrant-served-in-elizabeth-city" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Brown was shot and killed</a> by a Pasoquotank County sheriff's deputy on April 21. His death added to the list of officer-involved deaths that have led to protests across the country, including several days of peaceful ones in Elizabeth City.</p>
<p>“It's crazy what's going on right now, and I love my daddy to death,” one of Brown’s sons said at his funeral Monday.</p>
<p>Brown's family and civil rights leaders, including Rev. Al Sharpton, joined the message protesters have voiced for nearly two weeks since Brown's death, calling for answers and the release of the body cam footage related to the shooting.</p>
<p>“This must stop,” Sharpton said. “I come in Jesus’s name to stand up for a Black man that might've had a record, but he had a right to live his life.”</p>
<p>Meanwhile, for Grooten, he said what drives him to keep protesting is to keep the pressure on.</p>
<p>“We want answers, and we're asking for answers, and we won't stop until we get answers,” he said.</p>
<p>Law enforcement did not respond when asked if any arrests were made during Monday night's demonstrations.</p>
<p>While video footage of the shooting has not been made public, the sheriff's department showed Brown's family and their lawyers a a 20-second portion of the video last week. Brown's claims the video showed an "execution."</p>
<p>An autopsy commissioned by Brown's family and their lawyers showed that he was shot five times during the incident — four times in his arm, and once in the back of the head.</p>
<p>Meanwhile, the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) and FBI are both investigating the shooting, and Governor Roy Cooper has called for a special prosecutor to handle the case.</p>

<p>ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. — Nearly three weeks after his death, Andrew Brown Jr.’s family and attorneys <a class="Link" href="https://www.wtkr.com/news/after-reviewing-more-body-cam-footage-of-andrew-brown-jr-s-death-attorneys-to-address-public">watched more body cam footage</a> from the <a class="Link" href="https://www.wtkr.com/news/citizen-shot-fatally-wounded-by-police-while-search-warrant-served-in-elizabeth-city">deadly deputy shooting</a> of the 42-year-old Black man.</p>
<p>As they went inside the Public Safety Center, protesters and activists gathered outside, echoing calls for accountability, transparency and public release of the video.</p>
<p>“Transparency precedes trust,” said Rev. Dr. T. Anthony Spearman, President of the North Carolina NAACP. “These family members certainly deserve to be able to trust those who are sent to protect them.”</p>
<p>Peaceful protests continued Tuesday night after Brown's family and attorneys viewed more footage capturing the incident.</p>
<p>“He wasn’t in the wrong at all. What’s in the dark is going to come to light,” said Brown’s son, Khalil Ferebee.</p>
<p>“My father did not deserve to die at all,” said another one of Brown’s sons, Jha’rod Ferebee. “He did not deserve to get killed.”</p>
<p>Emotions were high after family and attorneys viewed the video.</p>
<p>“They [Brown’s sons] had to go through and endure something over the last two hours that not many of us can ever imagine,” Brown family attorney Bakari Sellers said. “For them, this is a pain that induces anger, outrage, disbelief, shock. This is pain for this community. This is pain for Black men and women all across the country.”</p>
<p>Attorneys, family members and protesters say they'll continue raising their voices peacefully.</p>
<p>“If you want peace, go out here and give us justice,” Sellers said.</p>
<p>Pasquotank County Sheriff Tommy Wooten II said <a class="Link" href="https://fb.watch/5qYwdO9bNk/">in a video posted to Facebook</a> Tuesday, "We showed all the footage authorized by the courts to the Brown family." </p>
