NEW YORK CITY — Former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin plans to seek a new trial and judge in her defamation lawsuit against the New York Times.

The revelation came Wednesday when Judge Jed Rakoff disclosed the news during a conference call with lawyers, the Associated Press reported.

According to the AP, Rakoff said in an order last week he informed jurors while they were still deliberating that he had ruled against the former Republican vice presidential nominee the day before.

The judge added that several jurors told his law clerk that they found out about the ruling from pop-up news notifications on their phones but that the messages didn't affect their decision during deliberations.

The jurors delivered their verdict the next day, rejecting her claim that The Times acted with malice with a 2017 editorial erroneously linking her campaign rhetoric to the mass shooting that injured former congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords.

The Times acknowledged the editorial had wrongly suggested Palin's political action committee helped inspire a 2011 Arizona shooting that killed six, quickly fixing the errors, which the paper said was an "honest mistake."

New York Times hockey reporter Robin Herman was a trailblazer, breaking down gender barriers by becoming the first female journalist to interview players inside a men’s professional sports locker room in the U.S.

On Tuesday, her husband former Times editor Paul Horvitz told the newspaper that she passed away from ovarian cancer.

She was 70.

Herman began covering the New York Islanders in 1974. Female sports reporters during that time were not allowed to enter a professional men's locker room like their male counterparts to interview players after games.

That all changed in 1975 when Herman and local radio reporter Marcelle St. Cyr were granted permission by the team's coaches to enter the locker rooms following the NHL All-Star Game in Montreal.

Herman recalled the event for an article for The Times several weeks later, saying the "mini sports history” moment, which she had hoped would go unnoticed turned into a “circus scene," the Associated Press reported.

She later went on to cover other things for the newspaper, while also making stops at The Washington Post. She also wrote a book and taught at Harvard.

According to The Boston Globe, Herman will be laid to rest at a cemetery in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and other top Democrats called for an investigation on Thursday after The New York Times reported that the Justice Department under President Donald Trump seized the communications data of members of the House Intelligence Committee.

"The news about the politicization of the Trump Administration Justice Department is harrowing," Pelosi, D-Calif., said in a statement. "These actions appear to be yet another egregious assault on our democracy waged by the former president."

The Times reported Thursday that the DOJ subpoenaed Apple for data from at least two committee members, as well as aides and family members, in 2017 and 2018. The Times report anonymously cited committee officials and two other people briefed on the inquiry.

Among those whose records were seized was California Rep. Adam Schiff, then the top Democrat on the committee.

Rep. Schiff: Subpoenas were extremely broad

Schiff, now the panel's chair, said in a statement Thursday night: "Though we were informed by the Department in May that this investigation is closed, I believe more answers are needed, which is why I believe the Inspector General should investigate this and other cases that suggest the weaponization of law enforcement by a corrupt president."

The Times reported that the subpoenas came as the DOJ was trying to hunt down the sources of leaks that had led to news stories about contacts between Trump associates and Russia.
