Another year in the books, this was the one we thought we could be back to normal. The coronavirus - and the omicron variant - had different plans.

“We’re learning more about omicron every day. It seems milder in many ways than delta. However, the jury is still out on that because we have only data from countries that have a different infection history than we do,” said Gigi Gronval. She works on pandemics with John’s Hopkins University.

She’s right - omicron seems to be milder than previous variants.

But it also spreads quickly.

And it’s causing an unprecedented spike in cases in the U.S.

“Omicron is spreading a little bit more rapidly because it’s able to infect people who are vaccinated and even boosted. So we’re having a lot more transmission because of that,” said Gronval.

This brings us to New Year’s Eve. Traditionally one of the biggest nights for large gatherings in the U.S. and worldwide. Should you go to that party?

The White House says no.

“If you plan to go to a 40 to 50 person New Year’s Eve party, with all the bells and whistles and everybody hugging and kissing, wishing each other a happy New Year, I would strongly recommend that this year we do not do that,” said Dr. Anthony Faucci in a recent White House briefing.

Experts say throwing caution to the wind and treating it like we aren’t in a pandemic is not a good idea.

“Do what you can to protect yourself and reduce the likelihood that you’re going to get infected. This is just where we are right now, and unfortunately, we can’t just dismiss all concerns about the pandemic when it’s still ongoing,” said Gronval.

If you do head out - make sure to take some precautions.

“If you go and do it anyway, I would recommend taking some precautions. I hope that people have already had a chance to get a booster. If they do not, that will make a big difference in a brief time,” said Gronval, “Stay in well-ventilated areas, if you’re going to have a party or get together, make it outside, bundle there’s no such thing as bad weather, there’s just bad clothing.”

It’s not the news we wanted. But it is the information we need to stay as safe as possible this year.

Here’s to giving you some better news in 2022.

Doctors and nurses in the ICU are approaching two full years of pandemic pressure. But public support for frontline workers has taken a back seat. "We're here to help, but we also need you to help. We also need the public to help," said Haleigh Seizys, an ICU nurse at Nebraska Medicine. As the pandemic rolls into a third year, that help can be as simple as sending donuts."You feed my nurses and they'll be happy," said Kim Olson, an ICU charge nurse at Bergan Mercy in Omaha, Nebraska. But ICU nurses say you can make the biggest difference by taking precautions to mitigate hospitalizations."For the past two years, our world has honestly been turned upside down," said Olson. But the days of banging pots and pans to thank our health care heroes are bygone, while the virus is as vicious as ever. "I can't speak to my patients, because they're struggling so much. I've had way more experience with death in two years, than I ever thought I would in a lifetime," said Seizys, who feels public support for doctors and nurses has plateaued. "I wish that people could understand the exhaustion of just the overworked staff."Some people do, especially those who have witnessed the crush of COVID-19 first-hand. "We have had phenomenal care," said Amy Crosby. Her 1-year-old has Down syndrome and is hospitalized with COVID-19 right now. "I don't think some of the health care people take credit for all that they do for the families."As a nurse herself, Crosby appreciates how health care workers put on a brave face for patients and frightened families."I feel like they've just been my good friends or my girlfriends through this whole process," said Crosby.Patients, like family members, recognize what their nurses are going through. Marvin Brinkman was in the ICU at Bergan Mercy last month."The ICU stay really showed me the pressure that a lot of the nurses and doctors were under," said Brinkman, who had brain surgery and said there were COVID patients in the unit. Some fear those pressures of the pandemic could cause mistakes in high-stakes environments. "I think that that's always a concern," said Brinkman. "I could tell that they were stretched thin."Those on the front lines say advertising our appreciation is more important than ever, as health care workers leave the profession in droves."We need those very skilled nurses taking care of us, otherwise we're going to be regretting it," said Brinkman. For nurses, the exhaustion they’re experiencing right now is unprecedented. It is spurred in part by mandatory overtime."Every day continues to get harder," said Olson. As cases rise, support seems to be slipping away. “From an ICU standpoint, we're drowning, emotionally and physically."Even so, they continue to show up, shift after shift. "You don't lose the passion for nursing," said Olson. They say a simple 'thank you' can sustain them during their darkest days."We have seen the most amazing support from both patients, families and friends."

New York City readied to embrace the new year — and bid good riddance to another pandemic-marred 12 months — as it prepared to revive its annual New Year's Eve celebration in Times Square. It did so as an uneasy nation tries to muster optimism that the worst days of the pandemic are now behind it — even as public health officials cautioned Friday against unbridled celebrations amid surging COVID infections from the omicron variant. The city said it would limit the number of people it lets into Times Square to witness a 6-ton ball, encrusted with nearly 2,700 Waterford crystals, descend above a crowd of about 15,000 in-person spectators — far fewer than the many tens of thousands of revelers who usually descend on the world-famous square to bask in the lights, hoopla and shower of confetti during the nation's marquee New Year's Eve event."We are very excited to welcome back visitors to Times Square this New Year's Eve," said Tom Harris, the president of the Times Square Alliance. "Our goal is to have a safe and responsible event for the world to see."The annual ball drop takes place Friday, as the clock ticks into midnight and ushers in the new year, an occasion usually commemorated with Champagne, clinking pints, joyous embraces and hopes for better times ahead. But 2022 begins just as the year prior began — with the pandemic clouding an already uncertain future.Doubts swirled whether the city would have to cancel this year's bash, as the city posted record numbers of COVID cases in the days leading to it, even as some cities like Atlanta had decided to cancel their own celebrations.Last year's ball drop was closed to the public because of the outbreak.COVID-19 cases in the U.S. have soared to their highest levels on record at over 265,000 per day on average. New York City reported a record number of new, confirmed cases — more than 39,590 — on Tuesday, according to New York state figures. But Mayor Bill de Blasio, who will relinquish oversight of the nation's most populous city at the stroke of midnight, said the festivities at Times Square would "show the world that New York City is fighting our way through this."Officials said those attending the spectacle would have to wear masks and show proof of vaccination. Organizers had initially hoped that more than 50,000 revelers would be able to join in, but plans were dramatically scaled back because of widespread infections.Rap artist and actor LL Cool J was supposed to be among the performers taking the stage in Times Square Friday night, but announced he would pull out of the event because he had tested positive for COVID-19.New York City's incoming mayor, Eric Adams, is scheduled to take his oath in Times Square soon after the ball drop. He expressed hope Thursday that 2022 would be "a new beginning of our resiliency."It was a sentiment shared by ordinary people.College students and sisters Mary and Vanessa Anyakwo were guardedly optimistic, too, as they took in Times Square on an outing from their home in suburban Elmsford, New York."I feel a lot more hopeful than I was last year because I think we have a lot more facilities" to handle the pandemic, said Mary, 20.Vanessa, 22, pointed to the crowds. "By this time last year," she said, "I didn't think it would be like this."Paolo Brügger, a banker from Zurich, Switzerland, reflected on a world fed-up with having to endure wave after wave of the virus a year after 2021 dawned with hopes bottled up in vaccine vials. His optimism was tempered by the world's new reality that the pandemic would linger into the new year."A lot of people are asking themselves now, 'Is this going to be like this every year — when we get into the cold season, we have a new variant, and we are back to square one?'" said Brügger, 55.Still, he was "extremely optimistic" about 2022, partly because vaccines and new therapies against COVID-19 and partly, he said with a chuckle, "because it can't be worse than the last two years."

New health and safety protocols were announced Thursday for the New Year's Eve celebration in Times Square.

The event in New York City will be limited to 15,000 people. Approximately 58,000 people typically pack into Times Square to see the ball drop on New Year's Eve.

Masks and proof of vaccination status are required for those planning to attend the event. Organizers will also limit entry to after 3 p.m.

The latest health protocols come as New York City faces a surge in cases of COVID-19 due to the omicron variant. The latest seven-day average of COVID-19 cases in New York City is well over 12,000.

This year's event marks the return of the in-person celebration. The annual tradition was virtual in 2020 due to concerns about the virus.

We're really looking back at all the music creators, trends, memes and moments that really shades 2022 the bees and to be sent to be sent to the baby booth. You know the through line is that these are videos that brought joy and inspiration to millions of Americans in a year that has been a bit of a whirlwind for everyone as we all try to figure it out. So when you're seeing Nathan Apodaca, a k a dog for 20 dog, based to a skating on his skateboard, drinking is ocean spray cranberry juice with dreams from Fleetwood Mac playing, it's really about capturing an essence in a moment. What Gen. Z would call immaculate vibes is what they call it. Like that whole energy, random things in my overpriced, shoebox sized New York City apartment that just makes sense. You're seeing everyone from the teenager Thio, the college students with their parents and then their grand parents are making videos. And that takes a truly transcends generations, particularly this year when people had a lot of time to like digging and not only watch but sly

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. — A restaurant in Beverly Hills is facing criticism for trying to plan a “discreet” New Year’s Eve dinner violating California’s coronavirus restrictions.

Indoor and outdoor dining have been banned in the Southern California region after the area reached ICU bed capacity earlier this month according to the state’s health department.

A journalist in the Los Angeles area tweeted an image of the invitation, which allegedly were inserted into to-go bags from La Scala. The dinner was supposed to have a 1920s prohibition/speakeasy theme.

Please keep this discreet, but tell all your friends.”

The City of Beverly Hills contacted the restaurant and reminded management of the current dining restrictions, according to the Los Angeles Times.

“We understand this is an incredibly difficult time for all of our businesses,” the statement to the LA Times reads, “however the County Order does currently prohibit indoor and outdoor dining, including in the City of Beverly Hills.”

California has recorded more than 2.1 million cases of the coronavirus since the pandemic started, and more than 24,200 deaths.

LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) — Bars and restaurants in one Kentucky city are planning a do-over of New Year’s Eve after a bomb scare caused police to evacuate a chunk of the downtown business district just as revelers were settling in.

Debbie Long, who owns the restaurant Dudley’s on Short, told the Lexington Herald-Leader that her place was fully booked Thursday night, and she had just texted someone to say they were going to be able to make rent and be on good footing for the new year when the call came to evacuate, shortly after 8 p.m.

Lexington police later said they had spotted a suspicious RV in a parking lot on the next block, and an explosives-sniffing police dog signaled an alert. Although it eventually turned out to be a false alarm, police weren’t taking any chances after the Christmas Day bombing by a man in an RV in downtown Nashville.

People poured out of bars and restaurants, hotels and apartments as police blocked off a 24-block area in the heart of downtown for about two hours.

“We left food on the table. Candles burning. Coats hanging,” Long said. They helped one couple, in their 80s, call someone to come get them because they couldn’t move their car.

Between pandemic shutdowns and capacity limits, restaurants and bars struggled to stay in business throughout 2020. But New Year’s Eve, with a vaccine finally at hand, had looked a like a bright spot. Now restaurant and bar owners are hoping a “do-over” will make up for some of that lost revenue.

At ELIXIR Downtown, owner Stephen Scaldaferri said seating for a special meal was sold out and people were enjoying themselves.

“This would have truly been the first night since COVID that we would not have lost money,” he said.

Scaldaferri said he planned a “New Year’s Eve do-over” Friday night to celebrate making it into 2021. And by 10 a.m. on New Year’s Day he’d already had about 30 tables committed to coming back.

Other Lexington restaurants, including Distilled on Jefferson, also were planning to offer repeats on Friday and Saturday of special dinners that got cut short, and bars were leaving holiday decorations up so the party could go on through the weekend. Bluegrass Tavern planned to offer beer and champagne specials on Saturday night.

Long said she plans to offer her special New Year’s Eve dinner on Saturday. “We’ve still got all the food,” she said. The dinner will include the same three-course gourmet meal, at a slightly reduced rate, $65.

She said at least one customer had called wanting to pay for the meal that was cut short.

“So sweet,” Long said. “In times like this, you really see the best in people.”
