<p>A list of lawmakers came out to issue renewed criticism over widely-held disapproval of the grip that events giant Ticketmaster has over the industry and its record of poor customer service. </p>
<p>The reinvigorated critiques over the ticketing giant came after multiple days of issues with ticket presale windows for Taylor Swift fans waiting in line to purchase high-priced concert tickets. </p>
<p>Thursday, Ticketmaster <a class="Link" href="https://twitter.com/Ticketmaster/status/1593333211769106433" target="_blank" rel="noopener">tweeted</a>, "Due to extraordinarily high demands on ticketing systems and insufficient remaining ticket inventory to meet that demand, tomorrow's public on-sale for Taylor Swift | The Eras Tour has been cancelled."</p>
<p>The frustrating news for fans came after multiple site crashes with Ticketmaster's purchasing platform. </p>
<p>Accusations that Ticketmaster has become a monopoly, or a near-monopoly, have been hurled at the company on social media, after many believe it has become too large and powerful to deal with a plethora of issues that its customers have been having over the years since its merger with Live Nation. </p>
<p>This month, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez tweeted her criticism of the company <a class="Link" href="https://twitter.com/AOC/status/1592587226801934336" target="_blank" rel="noopener">writing</a>, "Ticketmaster is a monopoly, its merger with LiveNation should never have been approved, and they need to be reigned in."</p>
<p>"Break them up," she said. </p>
<p>On the state level, Tennessee's Attorney General Jonathan Skrmetti <a class="Link" href="https://www.tennessean.com/story/money/2022/11/16/taylor-swift-ticketmaster-issues-presale-event-tennessee-attorney-general-consumer-protection-laws/69653646007/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> Tuesday, "We have received complaints, we are concerned about this very dominant market player, and we want to make sure that they're treating consumers right and people are receiving fair opportunity to purchase the tickets that clearly matter a great deal to them."</p>
<p>As the Tennessean reported, the attorney general is concerned that there could be consumer protection laws being violated. </p>
<p>With little to no other competitor companies for fans and artist to turn to in order to buy and sell tickets to shows, Taylor Swift fans found themselves, this time, stuck in long online queues amid the multiple site crashes, to purchase tickets that many see as exorbitant in price, with a list of fees. </p>
<p>The issue has been ongoing for lawmakers who have watched the company continue to provide customer service and benefits that aren't always in the best interest of the customer.</p>
<p>In 2020, Rep. Katie Porter from California, the Deputy Chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, wrote on Twitter saying Ticketmaster appeared to be trying to "provide the worst customer service in any industry" after it announced in April of that year that the company would not be providing refunds for tickets to postponed shows. </p>
<p>This can be a major financial blow for fans who have to travel from other cities to see concerts and attend other types of events, to then find out there has been a postponement to another date because of unforeseen circumstances. </p>
<div class="TweetUrl">
<blockquote class="twitter-tweet">
<p lang="en" dir="ltr">I applaud Ticketmaster for continuing to shine in what is apparently a competition to provide the worst customer service in any industry. Exorbitant ticket fees for negligible benefits—now taking advantage of a crisis to line their pockets? Next level. <img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/15.0.3/72x72/1f44f-1f3fc.png" alt="👏🏼" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" /><img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/15.0.3/72x72/1f44f-1f3fc.png" alt="👏🏼" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" /><img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/15.0.3/72x72/1f44f-1f3fc.png" alt="👏🏼" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" /> <a href="https://t.co/XySh6Ka04K">https://t.co/XySh6Ka04K</a></p>
<p>— Katie Porter (@katieporteroc) <a href="https://twitter.com/katieporteroc/status/1249871155575619587?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">April 14, 2020</a></p></blockquote>
</div>
<p>Lawmaker criticism for Ticketmaster has been ongoing, but this recent resurgence of red hot disapproval came after Taylor Swift announced her Eras Tour, a massive 52-show concert series set to begin in March. For fans, it's incredibly exciting as it's her first since 2018, and her largest, as the New York Times <a class="Link" href="https://www.nytimes.com/2022/11/01/arts/music/taylor-swift-eras-tour.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a>. </p>
<p>Tickets went on presale Tuesday via Ticketmaster's Verified Fan program that tries to keep tickets out of the hands of resellers, and first in the hands of fans. </p>
<p>Ticketmaster said in a statement on Tuesday that the company was “aware fans may be experiencing intermittent issues with the site and are urgently working to resolve" the issue, the company said in a<a class="Link" href="https://twitter.com/tmfansupport/status/1592546502484054017" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> tweet</a>. </p>
<p>Rep. Bill Pascrell of New Jersey wrote in a tweet that same day, "You'd think all these service and convenience fees could go to a working website Ticketmaster."</p>
<p>In 2009, Ticketmaster and Live Nation merged two years after an announcement that the live-events company planned to create its own ticketing service. Before the deal Live Nation was Ticketmaster's biggest customer, <a class="Link" href="https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/business/business-news/activist-group-justice-dept-unwind-live-nation-ticketmaster-merger-1235244376/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according </a>to the Hollywood Reporter.</p>
<p>Since then the merger has been criticized by artists, fans and lawmakers. In 2009 Bruce Springsteen tried to get fans to purchase tickets from his own ticketing platform. </p>
<p>While Springsteen lists tour dates with Ticketmaster, he said in a statement to <a class="Link" href="https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/business/business-news/activist-group-justice-dept-unwind-live-nation-ticketmaster-merger-1235244376/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">fans</a>, “the one thing that would make the current ticket situation even worse for the fan than it is now would be Ticketmaster and Live Nation coming up with a single system, thereby returning us to a near monopoly situation in music ticketing.”</p>
<p>An activist group has asked the U.S. Department of Justice to unwind the Live Nation and Ticketmaster merger, joining lawmakers, fans and artists in their continued pursuit to allow for more competition in the space. </p>

<p>Lisa Marie Presley, the only child of rock and blues legend Elvis Presley, will be buried at Graceland next to her son Benjamin Keough, who died in 2020. </p>
<p>The famous mansion in Memphis, Tennessee was once owned by Elvis and was later inherited by his daughter after his death. </p>
<p>Elvis died in 1977 at 42 years old, when Lisa Marie was just 9.</p>
<p>She was staying at Graceland at the time of his death. </p>
<p>She told a reporter for Rolling Stone in 2003 of her father's <a class="Link" href="https://apnews.com/article/lisa-marie-presley-dies-9fc02552f6f31e270647897a2e4104e9?utm_source=homepage&amp;utm_medium=TopNews&amp;utm_campaign=position_03" target="_blank" rel="noopener">death</a>, “I just had a feeling,” she said. </p>
<p>“He [Elvis] wasn’t doing well. All I know is I had it [a feeling], and it happened. I was obsessed with death at a very early age,” Presley said. </p>
<p>Her only son, Keough <a class="Link" href="https://people.com/music/lisa-marie-presley-final-instagram-posts-were-tributes-to-late-son-benjamin-keough/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">died</a> by suicide at 27. </p>
<p>Lisa Marie died Thursday at 54 after she was hospitalized following a medical emergency. </p>

A female shooter wielding two "assault-style" rifles and a pistol killed three students and three adults at a private Christian school in Nashville on Monday in what marks the latest in a series of mass shootings in a country growing increasingly unnerved by bloodshed in schools. The suspect also died after being shot by police following the violence at The Covenant School, a Presbyterian school for about 200 students from preschool through sixth grade. Police said the shooter was a 28-year-old woman from Nashville, after initially saying she appeared to be in her teens.Authorities were working to identify her and whether she had a connection to the school. The killings come as communities around the nation are reeling from a spate of school violence, including the massacre at an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas, last year; a first grader who shot his teacher in Virginia; and a shooting last week in Denver that wounded two administrators. The Nashville victims were pronounced dead upon arrival at the Monroe Carell Jr. Children's Hospital and Vanderbilt University Medical Center. One officer had a hand wound from cut glass.Other students walked to safety Monday, holding hands as they left their school surrounded by police cars, to a nearby church to be reunited with their parents."In a tragic morning, Nashville joined the dreaded, long list of communities to experience a school shooting," Mayor John Cooper wrote on Twitter. "My heart goes out to the families of the victims. Our entire city stands with you."Jozen Reodica heard the police sirens and fire trucks blaring from outside her office building nearby. As her building was placed under lockdown, she took out her phone and recorded the chaos."I thought I would just see this on TV," she said. "And right now, it's real."Video above: Jill Biden speaks after Nashville school shootingOn WTVF TV, reporter Hannah McDonald said that her mother-in-law works at the front desk at The Covenant School. The woman had stepped outside for a break Monday morning and was coming back when she heard gunshots, McDonald said during a live broadcast. The reporter said she has not been able to speak with her mother-in-law but said her husband had."In a tragic morning, Nashville joined the dreaded, long list of communities to experience a school shooting," Nashville Mayor John Cooper tweeted, thanking first responders and medical professionals. "My heart goes out to the families of the victims. Our entire city stands with you."The Covenant School was founded as a ministry of Covenant Presbyterian Church in 2001, according to the school's website. The school is located in the affluent Green Hills neighborhood just south of downtown Nashville, situated close to the city's top universities and home to the famed Bluebird Café – a beloved spot for musicians and song writers. The grade school has 33 teachers, the website said. The school's website features the motto "Shepherding Hearts, Empowering Minds, Celebrating Childhood."The shooter entered the school through a side entrance and went to the second story, police spokesperson Don Aaron said during a news briefing.Democratic state Rep. Bob Freeman, whose district includes The Covenant School, called Monday's shooting an "unimaginable tragedy.""I live around the corner from Covenant and pass by it often. I have friends who attend both church and school there," Freeman said in a statement. "I have also visited the church in the past. It tears my heart apart to see this."

<p>"I live around the corner from Covenant and pass by it often. I have friends who attend both church and school there," Freeman said in a statement. "I have also visited the church in the past. It tears my heart apart to see this."</p>

Another American community is reeling after a shooter killed three 9-year-olds and three adults at a private Christian elementary school in Nashville.Video above: Peers and friends of Katherine Koonce share the type of person and educator she wasMonday's attack was the deadliest U.S. school shooting in nearly a year and the 19th shooting at a school or university so far in 2023 that left at least one person wounded, a CNN count shows. Some 562 such shootings have unfolded since 2008."Our community is heartbroken," The Covenant School, a ministry of Covenant Presbyterian Church, said in a statement, expressing thanks to first responders for their quick response and those showing support for the school."We are grieving tremendous loss and are in shock coming out of the terror that shattered our school and church. We are focused on loving our students, our families, our faculty and staff and beginning the process of healing," the school said. Here's what we know so far about the victims:Evelyn DieckhausEvelyn was 9, police said. While her family appreciates all the love and support they've received, they're asking for space as they grieve, according to a family statement obtained by CNN affiliate KMOV."Our hearts are completely broken. We cannot believe this has happened," the statement said. "Evelyn was a shining light in this world."Mike HillHill, 61, was a beloved custodian at the school, police said, and a father of seven children.Known as "Big Mike" to students, Hill was a member of the facilities/kitchen staff, according to the school website. The staff member loved to cook and spend time with his family, according to a family statement obtained by CNN affiliate WSMV. He had 14 grandchildren."We would like to thank the Nashville community for all the continued thoughts and prayers. As we grieve and try to grasp any sense of understanding of why this happened, we continue to ask for support," the statement said."We pray for the Covenant School and are so grateful that Michael was beloved by the faculty and students who filled him with joy for 14 years," it added.Related video below: How do schools respond to gun incidents?Nashville parents set up a GoFundMe page to help support Hill's family with funeral expenses."Per his family, he took great pleasure and found tremendous joy in his job and through those students," the GoFundMe added. His daughter, Brittany Hill, said in a Facebook post on Monday that her dad "absolutely loved" his job."I have watched school shootings happen over the years and never thought I would lose a loved one over a person trying to solve a temporary problem with a permanent solution," she said. "I am so sorry for the loss of those children," she added."Please keep my family in your prayers tonight. Hug your parents and children a little tighter."Katherine KoonceKoonce was 60, police said, and head of the school, according to the website. She attended Vanderbilt University and Trevecca Nazarene University in Nashville and got her master's degree from Georgia State University, it added.Jim and Monica Lee, friends and former co-workers of Koonce, spoke Tuesday with reporters about her dedication."She gave her life because she was trying to protect students, protect faculty," said Jim Lee.They said the educator had a great sense of humor and was confident. Koonce exhibited humility and made each person she interacted with feel important, Jim Lee said."She could be on her knees talking to a preschool student, than she could turn around and be talking to a board member and then turn around and meet with an angry parent and then turn around and meet with the teacher that is having a bad day," he added.Cynthia PeakPeak, 61, was believed to be a substitute teacher at the school, according to police.Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee talked about the close relationship his wife Maria had with Peak. The teacher was supposed to come over to the Lee home Monday evening for dinner."Maria woke up this morning without one of her best friends," said Lee."Cindy and Maria and Katherine Koonce were all teachers at the same school and have been family friends for decades," Lee said."There will be a time to talk about the legislation and budget proposals we've brought forward this year. And clearly, there's more work to do," he said Tuesday night."There is hope in the midst of great tragedy because God is a redeemer. What is meant for evil can be turned for good. May we grieve in the days ahead, but not without hope. May we also act with wisdom, discernment, and grace. And may we love, especially those who have lost," Lee said in his video message.Louisiana state Rep. Charles Anthony Owen told CNN he's known Peak his whole life. Her hometown of Leesville, Louisiana, is grieving, Owen said."She and my sister were the closest of friends growing up and it seems like Cindy was around for all of my childhood," he said Tuesday in a Facebook post. "She and Mae Ann had birthdays one day apart and her family lived across the street from us for a period of time. Cindy and Mae were always together."Owen wrote that when Mae passed, Peak was one of the first faces he recalled seeing. "She was right here to grieve her old friend," he said.Hallie ScruggsHallie was 9, police said, and the daughter of Covenant Presbyterian Church Lead Pastor Chad Scruggs, according to a statement by Park Cities Presbyterian Church in Dallas, a sister church Scruggs formerly served."We love the Scruggs family and mourn with them over their precious daughter Hallie," the Texas congregation's Senior Pastor Mark Davis said. "Together, we trust in the power of Christ to draw near and give us the comfort and hope we desperately need."One other life takenAlso slain was William Kinney, 9, police said.

<p>
In an extraordinary act of political retaliation, Tennessee Republicans on Thursday expelled two Democratic lawmakers from the state Legislature for their role in a protest that called for more gun control in the aftermath of a deadly school shooting in Nashville. The banishment of Reps. Justin Jones and Justin Pearson was a move the chamber has used only a handful of times since the Civil War. Most state legislatures possess the power to expel members, but it is generally reserved as a punishment for lawmakers accused of serious misconduct, not used as a weapon against political opponents. The GOP supermajority in the House declined by a single vote to expel a third Democrat, Rep. Gloria Johnson.Johnson joined with Jones and Pearson last week as hundreds of protesters packed the Capitol to call for passage of gun-control measures. While demonstrators filled galleries, the three Democrats approached the front of the House chamber with a bullhorn and participated in a chant. The protest unfolded days after the shooting at the Covenant School, a private Christian school where six people were killed, including three children. Video below: Former Tennessee House Democrat speaks after expulsion “We are losing our democracy. This is not normal. This is not OK," Pearson told reporters as he waited to learn whether he would be banished too. The three “broke a House rule because we’re fighting for kids who are dying from gun violence and people in our communities who want to see an end to the proliferation of weaponry in our communities.”Johnson, a retired teacher, said her concern about school shootings was personal, recalling a day in 2008 when students came running toward her out of a cafeteria because a student had just been shot and killed there.“The trauma on those faces, you will never, ever forget. I don’t want to forget it,” she said.Thousands of people flocked to the Capitol on Thursday to support the Democrats, cheering and chanting outside the House chamber so loudly that the noise drowned out the proceedings. The trio held hands as they walked onto the House floor, and Pearson raised his fist to the crowd during the Pledge of Allegiance.Offered a chance to defend himself before the vote, Jones said the GOP responded to the shooting with a different kind of attack.“We called for you all to ban assault weapons, and you respond with an assault on democracy,” he said.If expelled, Jones vowed that he would continue pressing for action on guns.“I’ll be out there with the people every week, demanding that you act,” he said.Republican Rep. Gino Bulso said the three Democratic representatives “effectively conducted a mutiny."“The gentleman shows no remorse," Bulso said, referring to Jones. "He does not even recognize that what he did was wrong. So not to expel him would simply invite him and his colleagues to engage in mutiny on the House floor.”Even if they are expelled, the three lawmakers may not be gone for long. County commissions in their districts get to pick replacements to serve until a special election can be scheduled.Any expelled lawmakers would be eligible for appointment back to their seats. They would also be eligible to run in the special election. And under the Tennessee Constitution, lawmakers cannot be expelled for the same offense twice.Republican Rep. Sabi Kumar advised Jones, who is Black, to be more collegial and less focused on race.“You have a lot to offer, but offer it in a vein where people are accepting of your ideas,” Kumar said.Jones said he did not intend to assimilate in order to be accepted. “I’m not here to make friends. I’m here to make a change for my community,” he replied.Outrage over the possible expulsion underscored not only the ability of the Republican supermajority to silence opponents, but its increasing willingness to do so.In Washington, President Joe Biden also was critical of the expulsions, calling them “shocking, undemocratic, and without precedent.”“Three kids and three officials gunned down in yet another mass shooting. And what are GOP officials focused on? Punishing lawmakers who joined thousands of peaceful protesters calling for action. It’s shocking, undemocratic, and without precedent,” Biden tweeted. Many of the protesters traveled from Memphis and Knoxville, areas that Pearson and Johnson represent, and stood in a line that wrapped around the Capitol to get inside.Protesters outside the chamber held up signs that said, “School zones shouldn’t be war zones,” “Muskets didn’t fire 950 rounds per minute” with a photo of George Washington, and “You can silence a gun ... but not the voice of the people.“Before the expulsion vote, House members debated more than 20 bills, including a school safety proposal requiring public and private schools to submit their building safety plans to the state. The bill did not address gun control, sparking criticism from some Democratic members that lawmakers were only addressing a symptom and not the cause of school shootings.Past expulsion votes have taken place under distinctly different circumstances. In 2019, lawmakers faced pressure to expel former Republican Rep. David Byrd after he faced accusations of sexual misconduct dating to when he was a high school basketball coach three decades earlier. Republicans declined to take any action, pointing out that he was reelected as the allegations surfaced. Byrd retired last year.Last year, the state Senate expelled Democrat Katrina Robinson after she was convicted of using about $3,400 in federal grant money on wedding expenses instead of her nursing school. Before that case, state lawmakers last ousted a House member in 2016 when the chamber voted 70-2 to remove Republican Rep. Jeremy Durham after an attorney general’s investigation detailed allegations of improper sexual contact with at least 22 women during his four years in office.

<p>The GOP supermajority in the House declined by a single vote to expel a third Democrat, Rep. Gloria Johnson.</p>
<p>Johnson joined with Jones and Pearson last week as hundreds of protesters packed the Capitol to call for passage of gun-control measures. While demonstrators filled galleries, the three Democrats approached the front of the House chamber with a bullhorn and participated in a chant.</p>
<p>The protest unfolded days after the shooting at the Covenant School, a private Christian school where six people were killed, <a href="https://apnews.com/article/nashville-covenant-school-shooting-children-killed-75c11745c54edb9691f3d41455de11c5" rel="nofollow">including three children</a>.</p>
<p><strong><em> Video below: Former Tennessee House Democrat speaks after expulsion </em></strong></p>
<p>“We are losing our democracy. This is not normal. This is not OK," Pearson told reporters as he waited to learn whether he would be banished too. The three “broke a House rule because we’re fighting for kids who are dying from gun violence and people in our communities who want to see an end to the proliferation of weaponry in our communities.”</p>
<p>Johnson, a retired teacher, said her concern about school shootings was personal, recalling a day in 2008 when students came running toward her out of a cafeteria because a student had just been shot and killed there.</p>
<p>“The trauma on those faces, you will never, ever forget. I don’t want to forget it,” she said.</p>
<p>Thousands of people flocked to the Capitol on Thursday to support the Democrats, cheering and chanting outside the House chamber so loudly that the noise drowned out the proceedings.</p>
<p><a href="https://apnews.com/article/tennessee-lawmakers-expulsion-gun-control-98fbc28d28aeb3956e1f0ea91cd33e3f" rel="nofollow">The trio</a> held hands as they walked onto the House floor, and Pearson raised his fist to the crowd during the Pledge of Allegiance.</p>
<p>Offered a chance to defend himself before the vote, Jones said the GOP responded to the shooting with a different kind of attack.</p>
<p>“We called for you all to ban assault weapons, and you respond with an assault on democracy,” he said.</p>
<p>If expelled, Jones vowed that he would continue pressing <a href="https://apnews.com/article/nashville-school-shooting-covenant-school-04ecedf88a3777c64051aaedcf893c70" rel="nofollow">for action on guns</a>.</p>
<p>“I’ll be out there with the people every week, demanding that you act,” he said.</p>
<p>Republican Rep. Gino Bulso said the three Democratic representatives “effectively conducted a mutiny."</p>
<p>“The gentleman shows no remorse," Bulso said, referring to Jones. "He does not even recognize that what he did was wrong. So not to expel him would simply invite him and his colleagues to engage in mutiny on the House floor.”</p>
<p>Even if they are expelled, the three lawmakers may not be gone for long. County commissions in their districts get to pick replacements to serve until a special election can be scheduled.</p>
<p>Any expelled lawmakers would be eligible for appointment back to their seats. They would also be eligible to run in the special election. And under the Tennessee Constitution, lawmakers cannot be expelled for the same offense twice.</p>
<p>Republican Rep. Sabi Kumar advised Jones, who is Black, to be more collegial and less focused on race.</p>
<p>“You have a lot to offer, but offer it in a vein where people are accepting of your ideas,” Kumar said.</p>
<p>Jones said he did not intend to assimilate in order to be accepted. “I’m not here to make friends. I’m here to make a change for my community,” he replied.</p>
<p>Outrage over the possible expulsion underscored not only the ability of the Republican supermajority to silence opponents, but its increasing willingness to do so.</p>
<p>In Washington, President Joe Biden also was critical of the expulsions, calling them “shocking, undemocratic, and without precedent.”</p>
<p>“Three kids and three officials gunned down in yet another mass shooting. And what are GOP officials focused on? Punishing lawmakers who joined thousands of peaceful protesters calling for action. It’s shocking, undemocratic, and without precedent,” Biden tweeted.</p>
<p>Many of the protesters traveled from Memphis and Knoxville, areas that Pearson and Johnson represent, and stood in a line that wrapped around the Capitol to get inside.</p>
<p>Protesters outside the chamber held up signs that said, “School zones shouldn’t be war zones,” “Muskets didn’t fire 950 rounds per minute” with a photo of George Washington, and “You can silence a gun ... but not the voice of the people.“</p>
<p>Before the expulsion vote, House members debated more than 20 bills, including a school safety proposal requiring public and private schools to submit their building safety plans to the state. The bill did not address gun control, sparking criticism from some Democratic members that lawmakers were only addressing a symptom and not the cause of school shootings.</p>
<p>Past expulsion votes have taken place under distinctly different circumstances.</p>
<p>In 2019, lawmakers faced pressure to expel former Republican Rep. David Byrd after he faced accusations of sexual misconduct dating to when he was a high school basketball coach three decades earlier. Republicans declined to take any action, pointing out that he was reelected as the allegations surfaced. Byrd retired last year.</p>
<p>Last year, the state Senate expelled Democrat Katrina Robinson after she was convicted of using about $3,400 in federal grant money on wedding expenses instead of her nursing school.</p>
<p>Before that case, state lawmakers last ousted a House member in 2016 when the chamber voted 70-2 to remove Republican Rep. Jeremy Durham after an attorney general’s investigation detailed allegations of improper sexual contact with at least 22 women during his four years in office. </p>

<p>NASHVILLE — Lawmakers in Tennessee have proposed two controversial bills that would essentially allow some gun owners to act as law enforcement.</p>
<p><a class="Link" href="https://wapp.capitol.tn.gov/apps/BillInfo/Default.aspx?BillNumber=HB2554">HB 254 and SB2523</a> designate "a person who has been issued an enhanced handgun carry permit" as a member of law enforcement, under certain circumstances.</p>
<p>The bills allow permit holders to carry a gun where police can carry one.</p>
<p>State senator Joey Hensley, who introduced SB 2523, told <a class="Link" href="https://abcnews.go.com/US/tennessee-bill-designate-gun-owners-law-enforcement/story?id=82757071">ABC News</a> the legislation does not make gun holders police officers.</p>
<p>Currently in Tennessee, any adult can apply for an enhanced gun permit, which allows open and concealed carry.</p>
<p>The applicant must pay a $100 fee and go through an eight-hour handgun safety course.</p>
<p>However, several groups can get exemption from the training, including registered armed guard, military members and veterans.</p>
<p>The Tennessee State Lodge for the Fraternal Order of Police has told it is opposed to this bill, essentially saying that civilians are not versed in “criminal law, defense tactics” the way police officers are.</p>
<p>A hearing has not yet been set for the bills.</p>

HERE'S A LOOK AT YOUR WEATHER HEADLINES. THAT'S RIGHT. IT'S STAYING COLD THROUGH THE WEEKEND. WE'LL BE LUCKY TO GET THOSE TEMPERATURES AVEBO FREEZING. I THINK WE'LL DO IT. ALL RIG.HT YOUR BENGALS FORECAST IS COMING UP. AND AS I JUST MENTIONED, I DO HAVE AN UPDAT ON OUR CHANCES FOR SNOW ON SUNDAY. SO RHTIG NOW, IT'S THE HERE AND THERE. HOW AUTBO THIS? 17 HERE IN CINCINNATI. 21 CURRENTLY IN NASHVILLE. BUT BELIEVE IT OR NOT IT ACTULYAL FEELS COLDER IN NASHVILLE RIGHT NOW THAN IT DOES HERE IN CINCINNI.AT IT FEELS LIKE 11 DOWN THERE IN THE MUCSI CITY. SO AGAIN, A FRIGID DAYOR F FOOTBALL. BUT UNDERNEATH SOME OF THAT SOUTHERN SUNSHINE, DOWN THERE IN THE TENNESSEE VALLEY, IT MAY ACTUALLY FEEL OK FOR THE AFTERNOON GAME. FORTUNATELY IT'S IN THE AFTERNOON SO THAT HELPS OUT SOME, TOO. ALL RIGHT. HERE'S A LEIV LOOK OUTSIDE RIGHT NOW. IT IS FRIGID OUTSIDE. INTERESTING THE BREEZE UPON THE FLAG. IT HAS SWITCHED AROUNTOD THE SOUTH AND EAST. SO THAT MEANS THAT IN TIME, WE'RE SET FOR AT LEAST A LITTLE BIT OF A WARM-UP AND YOU THAT -- AND THAT YOU. BUT TEMPERATURES DROPPING CLOSE TO0 1 AS AN AVERAGE. SOME AREAS ESPECIALLY AWAY FROM THE CITY MAYBE DOWN AS LOW AS EIGHT OR NINE DEEEGRS TONIGHT. BUT MOST OF US THERE, SOMEWHERE BETWEEN ABOU 1T0 AND 15 FOR OVNIERGHT LOWS. HIGH PRESSURE IS SLIDING OFF TOWARD THE EAST. I AM KEEPING AN EYEN O A WEATHER SYSTEM UP HERE IN THE DABTAS. THAT WILL BRING US THE CHANCE FOR A LITTLE BIT OF SNOW ON SUNDAY. RIGHT NOW, WE'RE DOWN T 1O7 HERE IN CINCINNATI. THE WINDS ARE PRETTY MUCH LIGHT AND VARIABLE. THEY'RE REALLY NOT MOVING MUCH AROUND THE AREA. THEY WERE SOUTHEASTERLY LAST HOUR. AND I STILL THI TNKHAT'S THE CASE. WINDS ARE JUST VERY, VERY LIGHT. SO WITH THAT SAID, LOOATK THIS. DOWN TO NINE IN LOVELD.AN 10 IN HARRISON, 13 MASON WILMINGTON, 10 IN HILLSBOROUGH, WEST UNION, YOU'RE DOWN TO 14 IN DEALSBORO. UGH AND NINE AND IN -- IN MOUNT HEALTHY 11 IN DELH EXPIVMENT 12 IN HYDE PARK. SO IT IS TEETH CHATTERING COLD THROUGH THE NIGHT. SO WE'LL DROP DOWN TO ABOUT 11 HERE INHE T CITY. AND THEN EXPECT A NEIC WARM-UP TOMORROW. AT LEAST TOMORROW, WE'LLET G INTO THE 30'S. SOMETHINWEG DIDN'T DO TODAY. A QUICK CHECK ON FUTURECAST. SKIES TOMORROW WIL BEL MOSTLY SUNNY AND SOME HIGH CLOUDS ON THE INCREASE. IT SHOULD BE A NICE DAY. YOUR SATURDAY EVENING, PARTLY CLDYOU SKIES AND CHILLY. CONDITNSIO EXPECTED. HERE'S THE UPDATE ON SUNDAY. IT'S NOT SHOWING ON THIS PARTICULAR COMPUTER MODEL JUST YET, BUT I DO BELIEVE THERE IS CERTAINLY THE CHANCE THAT THIS AREA OF OWSN WILL BE EVEN FARTHER NORTH. AGAIN, THIS WAS MINOR TO BEGIN WITH. ANDT' IS LOOKING EVEN MORE MINOR IN THE -- AS WE GET CLOSER TO SUNDAY IN ITSELF. SO I'MEA RLLY THINKING RIGHT NOW IF SOMEONE COULD MUSTER OUT A HALF AN INCH OUTF O THIS, THAT MIGHT BE OWNED HHIG END NORTH OF THE MIGHT HAVE RIVER. AGAIN, THERE IS POTENTIAL THAT WE D'TON SEE MUCH MORE THAN A FEW FLURRIES OR A BRIEF SNOW SHOWER. KIND OF SIMILAR TO ATWH WE DEALT WITH EARLIER THIS WEEK AS THIS APPEARS TO BE ANOTHER SYSTEM THAT REALLY KIND OF SKIR THETS TRI-STATE. YOUR BEST CHANCES ARE NORTH OF 275. SO CLEAR AND FRIGID 11. TOMORROW, 32. MOSTLY SUNNYND A FREEZING. HERE'S A LOOK AT YOURAY D PLANNER. TEMPERATURES WILL INCH THEIR WAY TOWARD THE FREEZING MARK TOMORROW AFTERNOON. HERE'S YOUR SEVEN-DAY FORECAST. ALL RIGHT. NOTICE I REMOVED THE WEATHER IMPACT ICON ON SUNDAY BECAUSE I JUST DON'T THINK THE SYSTEM IS GOING TO BE THAT MUCH OF A DEAL TO BE HONEST WITH YOU. I THINK IT'S MORE FLURRIES. MAYBE A FEW SNOW SHOWERS THERE. EVEN IF YOU PICK UP HALF AN INCH I DO THINK ON SUNDAY TEMPERATURES WILL CREEP ABOVE FREEZING. SO THAT WON'T BE MUCH OF AN ISSUE THERE. BUT OVERALL, ASHLEY, COLD IS THE THEME. NOT SNOW. BUT COLD THROUGH THE SEVEN-DAY. ASHLEY: IT'S SAD WHEN A

CHANCES, ARE YOU HAVE MAJOR WAY OUTSIDE TODAY? IF YOU HADN’T YOU’REN I FOR A SURPRISE, IT’S VERY VERY. VERY COLD. IT IS VERY COLD. YEAH ALL THE LAYERS TODAY AND WE ARE NOT GOING TO BE GOING ANYWHERE WITH THE COLDS A WE HAD THROUGH TONIGHT. NO JUST GONNA GET WORSE GREAT. YEAH FEELS LE IKJANUARY. YEAH. IT’S GONNA BE A GREAT TIME TOMORROW MORNING, UH CITY CAMP VEFI RIGHT NOW SHOWING SOME CLOUD AND SUN CONDITIONS HERE ACROSS THE REGION. SO WE’VEOT G A PARTLY CLOUDY TO PARTLY SUNNY SKY AND WE’RE GONNA CONTINUE TO SEE THAT THROUGH TODAY THINK COLD SUNSHINE FOR MOST OF US HERE LIVE RADAR SHOWING THOSE QUIET SKIES, YOU DID START THE MORNING OFF WITH A FEW. FLURRIES, BUT THOSE HAVE SINCE DISSIPATED SO WE’RE GOING TO BE UNDER THAT MIX OF CLOUDS AND SUNSHINE AS WE GO THROUGH TODAY WIDER VIEW SHOWS HIGH PRESSURE OVERHEAD, AND THAT’SEE KPING THAT COLD AIR MASS IN PLACE. SO COLD HIGH PRESSURE SYSTEM OVER THE MIDWEST PCELAS IN THE OHIO VALLEY. SO WE ARE GOING TO BE STUCK IN THE CHILL HERES A WE HEAD THROUGH TONIGHT YOUR FORECAST FOR TODAY. WE’RE GONNA BE ON OUR WAY TO THE HIGH 20S. WE 'E ’RE GONNA BE UNDER THAT COLD SUNSHINE RIGHT INTO THIS EVENING AND THEN ORNVEIGHTO T 9. I THINK CLEAR SKIES EXPECTED BUT LOOK AT THAT TEMPERATURE BY TOMORROW MORNING. GOING TO BE SO GRATEFUL THAT WE DON’T HAVE MORE WIND STARTING THINGS OUT ON SATURDAYOR MNING IF WE HAD A REALLY STRONG BREEZE STARTING OUT TOMORROW’S WIND CHILLSOU WLD JUST BE NASTY. SO WE’RE JUST GONNA BE THANKFUL. THAT WINDSIL WL BE GENERALLY CALM AS WE START OUT TOMORROW TEMPERATURE 14 DEGREES. EITHER WAY. IT’S STILL GOING TO FEEL COLD FUTURE CAST AS WE GO THROUGH TODAY SHOWS THE CLEAR SKIES. YOU CAN SEENY A KIND OF LINGERING CLOUD COVER STARTING TO DISSIPATE SO I THINK BY THE COMMUTE TONIGHT WE’RE GONNA BE BACK UNDER THOSE MOSTLY CLEAR SKIES. WE’RE GONNA STAY CLEAR AS WE HEAD THROUGH THE OVER. HOURS NICE STAYRR SKIES INTO TONIGHT AND FIRST PART OF TOMORROW MORNING, SO WAKING UP TO SOME BRIGHT CONDITIONS, I THINK ABOUT 33 HERE IN CINCINNATI PARTLY CLDYOU SKIES ANOTRHE CHILLY DAY. SO IF YOU HAVE A WATCH PARTY TOMORROW HERE IN CINCINNATI, STJU DEFINITELY BRING THE WINTER YEAR WITH YOU ARE STAY CLOSE TO THE GRILL. IT’S GONNA STAY OLCO FOR MUCH OF THE AFTERNOON AND IF YOU’RE HEADED TO NASHVILLE, REALLY NOT A WHOLE LOT DFEIFRENT, I THINK A LOT OF SUNSHINE FOR THE NASHVILLE AREA STARTING THINGS TOU TOMORROW MORNING. I’VE GOT TEMPERATURES IN THE 3 GRAY RANGE AROUND TAILGATE TIME WIND CHILL IS GOING TO BE IN THE HIGH 20S TO LOW 30S AND THEN FOR CKKIOFF MOSTLY SUNNY SKIES. WE’RE LOOKING AT A TEMPERATURE OF ABOUT 38 NOW OUR ATTENTION TURNS TO SUNDAY HERE THAT’S GOING TO BE OUR NEXT SHOT OF ACTIVE WEATHER HERE. I THINK CLOUDY SKIES WAKING UP ON SUNDAY MORNING AND A QUICK LITTLE BURST OF SNOW COMING THROUGH WIT AH LITTLE CLIPPER AS YOU HEAD INTO SUNDAY AFTERNOON AND EVENING. SO BY 2 O’CLOCK, WE’RE LOOKING AT SOME LIGHT TO MAYBE LOCALLY MODETERA SNOWFALL ACROSS THE REGION THAT STARTS. AROUND AS YOU HEAD TOWARDS SIX IN THE EVENING. AFFORD THE MOST PART. I REALLY DON’T THINK WE’RE GOING TO SEE A LOT OF HIGH IMPACTS FROM THIS YOU MIGHT PICK UP A HALF AN INCHO T AN INCH OF ACCUMULATION WITH THIS. BUT AGAIN, IT’S GOING TO BE MOVING REALLY QUICKLY HERE. AND ONCE I’'S OUT OF HERE, I THINK WE’RE GOING TO BE BACK UNDER THOSE DRY SKIES AT LEAST RFO SAFE TIME MONDAY LOOKS PRETTY GOOD. WE’LL SEE A MIX OF CLOUDS AND SUNSHINE TEMPS IN THE MID-40S AND THE AN LITTLE BIT OF MORNING SNOW AS YOU HEAD INTO TUESDAY COLD DAY. <p>Due to a coin shortage at the Federal Reserve, Kroger will <a class="Link" href="https://www.newschannel5.com/news/kroger-to-no-longer-return-coin-change-to-customers">no longer return coin change</a> to customers. </p>
<p>Instead, the remainders from cash transactions can either be donated to charity or applied to the customers' loyalty cards to be used on the next purchase.</p>
<p>Kroger officials said, "at Kroger, we are implementing several creative solutions to minimize the impact to our customers. We know this is an inconvenience for our customers and we appreciate their patience. The Treasury Department expects the shortage to diminish as more regions of the country reopen."</p>
<p>Customers have the following options if coins are not available:</p>
<ul>
<li>Round up to support Zero Hunger, Zero Waste Foundation</li>
<li>Pay with a form of payment other than cash</li>
<li>Have their coin change loaded as credit toward their next purchase directly to their loyalty card</li>
</ul>
<p>Currently, Kroger stores are collecting donations for its Zero Hunger|Zero Waste Foundation by allowing customers to round up their order total to the next dollar. The foundation supports hunger relief efforts across the communities it serves.</p>
<p>Customers using self-checkout will still be able to receive coins.</p>

<p>Recent <a class="Link" href="https://www.newschannel5.com/news/germ-resistant-copper-phone-case-created-in-nashville-now-in-hands-of-health-care-workers">Vanderbilt University graduates</a> who made a germ-resistant phone case after contracting COVID-19 have now sold 1,000 cases. They are donating as many cases to health care workers.</p>
<p>"Now that they have them in their hands, just the positive response we have been getting is just something that we weren't fully expecting," said Nick O'Brien.</p>
<p><b>RELATED: <a class="Link" href="https://www.newschannel5.com/news/college-seniors-create-germ-resistant-copper-phone-case-after-recovering-from-covid-19">College seniors create germ-resistant copper phone case after recovering from COVID-19</a></b></p>
<p>After contracting the novel coronavirus, Nick O'Brien, Isaac Lichter, and Andrew Medland founded <a class="Link" href="https://aeris.one/">Aeris</a> and created their first product, a copper-coated phone case.</p>
<p>"Copper is very effective at continuously killing germs, a whole variety of microbes including the novel coronavirus," said Isaac Lichter.</p>
<p>In a matter of months, the entrepreneurs who graduated from Vanderbilt, moved to San Diego and are now producing their product on an industrial scale. They are able to fill orders as soon as they come in and make good on their promise to donate a case to a healthcare worker for each one purchased.</p>
<p>On Friday, Aeris donated phone cases to Vanderbilt University Medical Center.</p>
<p>"I am very excited to see what these 250 healthcare workers have to say," said Lichter.</p>
<p>Next, the company plans to donate cases to hospitals in their hometowns, including New York City and San Diego.</p>

<p><b>LIVE COVERAGE AVAILABLE IN THE STREAM BELOW:</b></p>
<p>During a press conference Friday, Mayor John Cooper said 41 separate businesses were heavily damaged in the explosion. Cooper added that the city is resilient and will rebuild.</p>
<p>"The message today is that we are going from relief now to resolve," Cooper said. "To catch those folks, rebuild our city and one more challenge of 2020, but we will get through it."</p>
<p>Metro Police officials said tissue was found at the explosion site, but Chief John Drake could not confirm if it was a human victim of the incident. The AP said the remains were human, but could not confirm how the remains were related to the explosion.</p>
<p>"When I was briefed this morning of the explosion, I thought it was going to be a propane tank explosion from an RV, but it turned out to be an intentional act," Chief Drake said.</p>
<p>Metro Nashville police have also released a surveillance photo of an RV before it exploded early Friday morning in downtown.</p>
<p>According to police, the vehicle arrived on 2nd Ave at 1:22 a.m. Anyone with information on it should call Crime Stoppers at 615-742-7463 or report it online via <a class="Link" href="https://fbi.gov/nashville">https://fbi.gov/nashville</a>.</p>

<p>Additionally, the FAA has temporarily halted flights out of Nashville due to the ongoing telecommunications issues. Nashville International Airport said they expect the issues to be resolved and anticipate service to resume by 3 p.m. CT.</p>

<p>The FBI has now taken the lead in the investigation into the large explosion that caused massive damage and injured three people.</p>
<p>The blast was felt across much of Davidson County around 6:30 a.m. Metro police said the explosion has been linked to a vehicle outside 166 Second Avenue N., the location of an AT&amp;T data center downtown.</p>
<p>Metro police said there is no other imminent danger to the public, but out of precaution, K-9s are sweeping the area.</p>
<p>During a morning press conference, Metro police said they believe the explosion was an "intentional act." Federal agents say the bureau has not yet determined the motive or if the explosion was in fact intentional. The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is also assisting with K-9s.</p>
<div class="Quote">
<blockquote><p>Authorities provided the most recent update around noon. Watch below:</p></blockquote>
</div>
<p>The FBI opened an <a class="Link" href="https://tips.fbi.gov/digitalmedia/7a67ae4eca52788" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">online tip line</a> for anyone who may have information on the explosion. Agents said anyone with information can also call 1-800-CALL-FBI. The Nashville Convention &amp; Visitors Corporation (NCVC) has offered a $25,500 reward for information in the case.</p>
<p>Metro police spokesman Don Aaron said police received a report of a suspicious vehicle outside of the AT&amp;T transmission building and upon investigating the report, officers called the hazardous devices unit. The vehicle was playing a warning message for anyone in the area to evacuate, police said. Officers then went door-to-door to evacuate the area.</p>
<p>About an hour after the report of a suspicious vehicle, the vehicle exploded.</p>
<p>Witnesses told investigators they heard gunshots early in the morning and a message coming from an RV parked in the street warning anyone in the area to evacuate before beginning to count down to an explosion. Police have confirmed that the RV was broadcasting a message. Video posted to YouTube appears to capture the reported warning message seconds before the blast. </p>
<p><b><i>Warning, some may find the below video disturbing:</i></b><br /><iframe title="Nashville Explosion 12/25/20" width="1220" height="915" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/5nygTJeu9fU?feature=oembed" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe></p>
<p>Three people have been taken to the hospital, but officials say none of the injuries have been reported as critical. Metro police said an officer suffered hearing loss from the explosion, but the department is hoping the hearing loss is only temporary.</p>
<p>Traffic to the downtown area has been restricted on Friday morning. An Emergency Operations Center has been activated in response to the explosion.</p>
<p>Nashville firefighters have asked everyone in the area to move at least two blocks away due to concerns about any possible other explosions.</p>

<p>NASHVILLE, Tenn. — AT&amp;T said crews have made significant progress restoring service to the region on Sunday morning following an explosion on Friday morning outside an AT&amp;T data center.</p>
<p>The explosion impacted widespread service interruption reaching outside of just Middle Tennessee. </p>
<p>On Sunday morning, the company said power has been restored to four floors of the building and more than 65% of mobile sites affected by the explosion have been restored. </p>
<p>More than three feet of water was pumped out of the building's basement on Saturday, however, access to some of the lowers is still limited. </p>
<p>AT&amp;T said on Sunday crews will be adding additional cabling and more generators to provide more power into the building to help with restoration efforts.</p>
<p>"Teams are working to safely bring additional equipment online and reroute services through other facilities in the region. While mobility services have been restored in many areas, we still have more than 17 portable cell sites on the air to aid in communication, including for restoration teams and first responders," AT&amp;T said in an update. "We are bringing in additional resources to support the recovery of wireline voice and data services and expect to have a fleet of 24 additional trailers of disaster recovery equipment on-site by the end of the day."</p>
<p>The company did not provide an exact time when it expects service to fully be restored. Metro officials said there will be times customers will lose service as restoration efforts continue but officials are confident to be running at full capacity by the end of Sunday.</p>
<p>Damage to the building is still being assessed.</p>

<p>NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WTVF) — Metro Nashville Police has released body camera video from Officer Michael Sipos, one of the six officers who helped evacuate families ahead of the Christmas morning bombing.</p>
<p>Sipos was issued a body camera just days before the explosion.</p>
<p>The video shows actions both before and after the blast. The explosion happens around the 3:51 mark in the video below.</p>
<p><iframe title="Officer Sipos&#039; Body Camera Footage, 12/25/2020" width="1220" height="686" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/lBgm62C0q-w?feature=oembed" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe></p>
<p>Officer Sipos said in a press conference on Sunday that when they arrived, they didn't really notice the RV, and parked just across from it. That was before the RV began broadcasting a message that it contained a bomb and for people to evacuate the area.</p>
<p>You can see the RV in the video around the 1:57 mark, and hear the RV's broadcast through much of the first few minutes of the video provided by Metro police.</p>
<p>Sipos and his fellow officers began to work at knocking on doors, evacuating families ahead of the blast. Sipos says they got in contact with about six or seven families.</p>
<p>Sipos returned to his patrol car and was getting equipment out of the trunk when it exploded.</p>
<p>Much of the video shows Sipos and other MNPD officers returning to Second Avenue N. heavily damaged and on fire. Officers are seen helping residents evacuate the area, many of who are dazed and unsure of what just happened. </p>

<p>Dolly Parton is saying thanks, but no thanks, to Tennessee lawmakers who want to build a statue in her honor at the capitol in Nashville.</p>
<p>In a statement <a class="Link" href="https://twitter.com/DollyParton/status/1362431803391377409">posted to Twitter</a> Thursday morning, Parton said she was “honored and humbled by their intention but I have asked the leaders of the state legislature to remove the bill from any and all consideration.”</p>
<p>“Given all that is going on in the world, I don’t think putting me on a pedestal is appropriate at this time,” her statement reads.</p>
<p>A state representative proposed the <a class="Link" href="https://asnn.prod.ewscripps.psdops.com/entertainment/tennessee-lawmakers-consider-dolly-parton-statue-at-state-capitol">idea last month </a>to recognize all Parton has contributed to the state. The statue would have been paid for with a mix of monetary gifts and donations.</p>
<p>Parton has used her fame and fortune for several large philanthropic causes. In 1995, she started the Imagination Library to promote children’s literacy, which has grown into an international organization. Every month, the organization sends out more than one million books to children under age 5.</p>
<p>During the coronavirus pandemic, the Dollywood Foundation has focused on Mountain Tough, which offers resources to those impacted by COVID-19, including counseling access and shopping assistance.</p>
<p>And notably, last year she donated a million dollars to Vanderbilt University Medical Center to help develop the Moderna coronavirus vaccine.</p>
<p>Parton’s statement Thursday left the door open to the possibility of a statue in the future.</p>
<p>“I hope, though, that somewhere down the road several years from now or perhaps after I’m gone if you still feel I deserve it, then I’m certain I will stand proud in our great State Capitol as a grateful Tennessean,” Parton’s statement reads.</p>
<p>“In the meantime, I’ll continue to try to do good work to make this great state proud.”</p>

<p>NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Age discrimination is nothing new, but Suzette Inman says she’s worried COVID-19 gave businesses an excuse to push older employees out of the workforce.</p>
<p>Inman says she has filled out hundreds of applications and been through only a handful of interviews. It’s been five months without a job for the 50-something-year-old who says she’s heard all the advice before.</p>
<p>Some have told her to change the college graduation date on her resume. Meanwhile, others have said maybe consider cosmetic work to appear younger.</p>
<p>“It’s a dilemma, and I’m so sad and so sorry for the other people who are out there like me who are struggling right now to eat,” Inman said.</p>
<p>Inman has more than 25 years of experience in data research and digital marketing. It makes it all the more frustrating when she hears that these are the changes you need to get a job with few opportunities to pay a living wage.</p>
<p>The US Dept. of Labor released April’s jobs report, which showed we gained 266,000 across the country. Experts predicted the vaccine rollout and loosening of COVID restrictions would have led to a boom in hiring. Many expected the number of new jobs to top one million. The unemployment rate actually rose to 6.1 percent.</p>
<p>Thankfully Inman has had unemployment benefits, but even that took months.</p>
<p>"If it weren’t for my church, I would’ve gone under,” Inman said.</p>
<p>Slashing the state’s unemployment benefits was unthinkable for Inman. Now it’s closer to reality. State lawmakers voted to cut benefits from 26 weeks down to 12—the fewest number of weeks in the country.</p>
<p>An amendment to these bills looks to cut unemployment to 12 weeks from the 26 weeks it usually provides. This only happens if the state’s average unemployment rate is at or below 5.5%, in other words, where they’re expected to be when things get back to normal.</p>
<p>Claimants get an additional week of benefits for each 0.5% we are over that 5.5% threshold. So if the unemployment rate is at 6.5%, claimants get two more weeks up to a max of 20 weeks.</p>
<p>The state’s fiscal report says this will cut between $31-$36 million/year in benefits from the insurance trust fund.</p>
<p>If approved and signed, this law would go into effect on July 1, 2023. It would cost the state $250,000 to make the necessary IT changes to their unemployment systems.</p>
<p>“We need some solutions here and just cutting people off is not the solution,” Inman said.</p>
<p>Lawmakers say the solution should be finding a job. Inman says she agrees, but we need time to work for...not against us.</p>
