Related video above: US Open will offer players mental health servicesNaomi Osaka is back in Grand Slam action after a mental health break. Back to playing quite well, too. After a tight start to her first-round U.S. Open match Monday night, the reigning champion grabbed eight of the last nine games and put together a 6-4, 6-1 victory over 87th-ranked Marie Bouzkova of the Czech Republic.Helped by a serve that reached 120 mph, Osaka saved all eight break points she faced and accumulated a 34-10 edge in total winners. She hadn't played at one of her sport's four major tournaments since May 30 at the French Open. That day, Osaka skipped her mandatory news conference after her first-round victory in Paris, drawing a $15,000 fine and a warning from the heads of the Slams that she could face a suspension. She responded by pulling out of Roland Garros, explaining that she feels anxiety when speaking to the media and has dealt with depression for years. Osaka then sat out Wimbledon, too.A year ago, when she won the title at Flushing Meadows for the second time, there weren't any spectators allowed, because of the coronavirus pandemic. But they returned Monday in full force, and Osaka heard plenty of support from the thousands in Arthur Ashe Stadium."It feels kind of crazy to play in front of everyone again. I just want to say thank you for coming out here. Last year, when we didn't have a crowd, I know it felt quite lonely for me," she said with a smile during her on-court interview. "I'm glad to see little kids in the audience — and, of course, grown-ups, too."While dropping Bouzkova's career mark in major matches to 1-11, Osaka improved her own to 55-14, including 22-3 at the U.S. Open as she tries to become the first woman with consecutive trophies in New York since Serena Williams collected her third in a row in 2014.Osaka beat Williams in the chaotic 2018 final in Ashe. She also has won hard-court major titles at the Australian Open in 2019 and this February."I've played a lot of matches on this court," Osaka told the Ashe fans. "Definitely, I feel really comfortable here."Used to be home, actually. She was born in Japan to a Japanese mother and Haitian father, and when Osaka was 3, the family moved to Queens. They lived there until she was 8, when they went to Florida.Last week, Osaka went to her old neighborhood to check out tennis courts there that she paid to have refurbished. "It definitely meant a lot to me ... just to revisit my old courts and see familiar faces," she said. Her match against Bouzkova originally was scheduled to begin around 7:30 p.m., but didn't get going until after 9 p.m., on account of the preceding match between Andy Murray and Stefanos Tsitsipas lasting nearly five hours. When that men's matchup ended, thousands of fans with night session tickets needed to wait to get into Ashe while those holding day session seats were cleared out and the arena was cleaned. As play began, Osaka was a tad tentative, allowing Bouzkova to keep things close for a while. But from 4-all in the first set, everything began to go Osaka's way. She had fewer break chances overall — just six — but managed to convert half of them, and her serve and quick-strike forehand did the rest. Next up for Osaka is a match against 145th-ranked Olga Danilovic.

Naomi Osaka is raising awareness around the devastation in Haiti following a recent 7.2-magnitude earthquake. The tennis star has pledged to donate any prize earnings from this week's Western &amp; Southern Open in Cincinnati to support earthquake relief efforts in the Caribbean island country. Haiti declared a one-month state of emergency in response to an earthquake that struck near Haiti Saturday morning, which has left over 700 people dead and over 2,800 injured according to CNN.Osaka, who is Haitian on her father's side, and Japanese on her mother's, announced her pledge on Twitter on Saturday. She wrote, "Really hurts to see all the devastation that’s going on in Haiti, and I feel like we really can’t catch a break. I’m about to play a tournament this week and I’ll give all the prize money to relief efforts for Haiti." "I know our ancestors blood is strong we’ll keep rising," she wrote, ending the post with an emoji of the Haitian flag and a praying hands emoji.According to Sports Illustrated, the Western &amp; Southern Open begins Monday and is expected to award $255,220 to the women's singles winner, and $188,945 to the the runner-up.The four-time Grand Slam champion has been outspoken about current events and social justice issues throughout her career.During last year's U.S. Open, which took place amid nationwide police brutality protests, Osaka showed her support of the Black Lives Matter movement by wearing face masks printed with the names of Black people who have been killed by police. The 23-year-old also condemned anti-Asian hate crimes and called for support toward the AAPI community earlier this year.

Naomi Osaka had a special moment at the Australia Open on Friday — and it didn't have anything to do with tennis. The 23-year-old athlete had an unexpected visitor on the court during a match with Ons Jabeur. A small butterfly landed on Naomi's hand and she paused to make sure the little butterfly flew away safely. Except it didn't want to go. Instead, the butterfly landed right on her cheek and the world collectively gasped at the sweet moment."Even the butterflies in Australia love @naomiosaka," the Australian Open's Twitter account captioned a clip of the moment, adding a blue butterfly and a face with tears of joy emoji. Naomi shared photos from the match to her Instagram account, encouraging her followers to "swipe to the end for a laugh." The last photo, of course, is a shot of the butterfly (aka her new BFF) chillin' out on her face. What a photo op."That was my favorite part of the match. You’re like a Disney character ?? " one fan wrote. Another commented, "Such a great moment; that’s a message to go and do this...you’re flying now! This is your time!" "Butterflies are considered a good thing it’s protecting you Queen you have great things coming your was," one fan wrote. It's true that butterflies symbolize hope, endurance, and courage. Needless to say, Naomi won the match.

<p>Sam Cary started as a freshman in one of the biggest games in Iowa women’s soccer history.</p>
<p>“I put a lot of that pressure on myself of I need to do this because this is the position I’m in. So that all really started building in my head, and imposter syndrome, do I really belong here? Is it really, am I really the best choice filling the role on the team? A lot of self-doubt and questioning that I really had to rumble through,” said Cary.</p>
<p>She was the only freshman in a playoff game starting alongside 14 seniors in the Hawkeye women’s winningest season.</p>
<p>“I remember the NCAA game that year. I was like, oh my gosh, if I make a mistake and we lose, I’m the reason, I’m ending these senior’s careers,” she said. </p>
<p>That immense pressure only increases as you progress in a sport. Olympic athletes on the world’s biggest stage are no exception.</p>
<p>“The elite athletes, and some at the very tip-top, have different pressures than other athletes, so it’s just when you start to add up all of the risk factors or all of the different pressures, any human can only take so much. So I think it just understands what that is, that is very different for every athlete, and every person,” said Jessica Bartley is the Director of Mental Health for the US Olympic Committee.</p>
<p>She has been tasked with strengthening the organizations' mental health program.</p>
<p>That includes a hotline, adding mental health staff, expanding education for athletes, and having on-site therapists and counselors for athletes.</p>
<p>“On average, we get about eight calls a week to our team USA mental health support line. We also have athletes reaching out directly. We have coaches reaching out on behalf of athletes,” said Bartley.</p>
<p>The mental health of athletes took center stage over the summer as female superstars Naomi Osaka and Simone Biles have notably withdrawn from competition to focus on their mental health.</p>
<p>People on the inside say taking a step back is an efficient way to fight the stigma associated with mental health.</p>
<p>"Breaking down the stigma is starting to just openly reach out for help and openly talk about what’s going on,” said Bartley.</p>
<p>“The fact that an Olympian, someone that people realize as the greatest of all time, can put their mental health first and really just believe that that was the best decision for her is really inspiring,” said Cary. </p>
<p>She hopes that by speaking openly about her journey, she can be an inspiration too.</p>
<p>“I love that my teammates know that I go and I work with a sports psychologist, and that’s great for me, and it’s helped me so much. I feel like if I’m an incoming freshman and I hear a junior now about, oh yeah, I use the sports psych, maybe freshmen may not be as concerned and be like, oh, it’s normal."</p>

<p>MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) — Naomi Osaka has stopped Serena Williams’ latest bid for a record-tying 24th Grand Slam singles title in the Australian Open semifinals.</p>
<p>Osaka reached her fourth major final by beating Williams 6-3, 6-4 to stretch her winning streak to 20 matches.</p>
<p>Williams grabbed the first two games before Osaka took control with a five-game run.</p>
<p>Osaka broke Williams to begin the second set and was on her way.</p>
<p>Williams’ forehand was off the mark all match and she finished with totals of 24 unforced errors and just 12 winners.</p>
<p>Williams won her 23rd major championship at Melbourne Park in 2017 but remained one behind Margaret Court’s mark for the most in history.</p>
<p>Spectators are allowed back at Melbourne Park on Thursday (Wednesday night EST) after being banned for five days during a local COVID-19 lockdown.</p>
<p>The 39-year-old Williams already owns 23 major singles trophies, one away from Margaret Court’s record for the most in tennis history.</p>
<p>Williams’ most recent Grand Slam title came at the 2017 Australian Open, while she was pregnant. Since returning to competition after her daughter was born, Williams has reached four major finals and lost each.</p>
<p>One of those defeats came against Osaka at the 2018 U.S. Open. The 23-year-old Osaka also won last year’s U.S. Open and the 2019 Australian Open.</p>
<p>The other women’s semifinal is No. 22 Jennifer Brady of the United States against No. 25 Karolina Muchova of the Czech Republic.</p>
<p>One men’s semifinal is on the schedule: No. 1 Novak Djokovic vs. Aslan Karatsev, a qualifier from Russia who is ranked 114th and playing in his first Grand Slam tournament.</p>
<p>Djokovic is seeking a ninth Australian Open title and 18th Grand Slam trophy overall.</p>
<p>Rafael Nadal — <a class="Link" href="https://apnews.com/article/daniil-medvedev-australia-sports-europe-russia-andrey-rublev-8177c7dc41b90ec83753925686a825a1">who lost in the quarterfinals to Stefanos Tsitsipas</a> — and Roger Federer are tied for the men’s record of 20.</p>

<p>One of the best tennis players in the world says she won't do news conferences at the French Open.</p>
<p>Naomi Osaka posted the announcement on Instagram last night.</p>
<p>"I've often felt that people have no regard for athletes mental health and this rings very true whenever I see a press conference or partake in one," Osaka said in her post, saying that reporters ask questions that have been answered before, or asked questions that "bring doubt into our minds."</p>
<p>"I believe that whole situation is kicking a person while they're down and I don't understand the reasoning behind it."</p>
<p>Osaka, ranked number two women's tennis player in the world, says she's aware she will be fined for not appearing at press conferences for events and hopes the money will be donated to a mental health charity.</p>
