MOUNT HEALTHY, Ohio —

A little before noon Sunday, an apartment on Lakenoll Drive became the scene of what Mt. Healthy police Chief Vince Demasi believes was a murder-suicide.

The situation began when two officers tried to resolve a custody issue by getting Eric Johnson to return his 6-year-old daughter, Iyla, back to her mother.

"During the exchange, the officers heard what they believed to be a gunshot coming from the second floor," Demasi said. "Officers responded up (and) found that the door itself had been barricaded. Additional shots rang out at the officers, at which point they retreated."

What followed was an hourslong SWAT standoff that had neighbor Andrew Dawson praying for a positive outcome.

"That's the most important thing that any of us could do is lean on, trust God," Dawson said.

As minutes passed, Dawson described the desperation onlookers felt.

"The family, all the family was here. They couldn't, they couldn't get passed up where I live. They couldn't get passed there. Everything was roped off," Dawson said. "You had witnesses all over, SWAT, you had people here that was upset."

Upset turned to sadness when police discovered that Eric Johnson and his young daughter, Iyla, were dead from gunshot wounds.

While waiting for the coroner to make an official determination as to what happened, Demasi said Eric Johnson should not have had a gun.

"Mr. Johnson has a long felony criminal record and is obviously an individual that – number one, shouldn’t be out and about on our streets. And number two – definitely should not be in possession of a firearm," Demasi said. "But, unfortunately, he was."

Dawson said he thought police did a "really good job" during Sunday's incident by trying to resolve the ordeal without anyone getting hurt.

MOUNT HEALTHY, Ohio —

A man is behind bars after an accused kidnapping and armed robbery.

Mt. Healthy Police said the suspect, 25 year old Trevor Stigall, violated a restraining order when he entered the home with a pick axe.

A 911 caller reported the incident to police on Hamilton Avenue Wednesday.

"The guy's got a restraining order against the other guy and he's got him in his house scared," the caller said. "He said he keeps coming back and he might be there right now."

Police confirmed the homeowner, David Leaman, does have a restraining order against Stigall.

They said Stigall violated the restraining order by first entering the home and allegedly stealing food.

Police said a short time later, he came back with the pick axe and forced Leaman to leave the trailer, "or else."

"He was threatening to cause physical harm to him if he didn't go get the money out of the ATM," Sgt. Alan Fath with Mt. Healthy Police said.

The two walked to a nearby UDF, where Leaman withdrew $20 and handed it to Stigall.

Officers eventually found the suspect and arrested him that night. He faced a judge Thursday and is charged with aggravated burglary, kidnaping, robbery and violating a protection order.

Police say Stigall is claiming he did nothing wrong.

"The suspect stated that he had been asked to come to the residence and he voluntarily was given that $20," Fath said.

COLERAIN TOWNSHIP, Ohio — Police responded to four shootings in Mt. Healthy and Colerain Township – all occurring within several blocks of each other and leading to responses from four police departments.

The first shooting occurred outside a Walmart in the 8400 block of Colerain Avenue in Colerain Township before midnight on Monday. Shortly after police arrived, there were reports of another shooting on Forest Avenue in Mt. Healthy.

Another shooting was reported nearby on Werner Avenue in Mt. Healthy followed by another shooting call nearby on Arbor Wood Drive in Colerain Township.

Police said no injuries were reported.

"We were able to find evidence that there was some kind of a shooting (at the Walmart)," Jim Love, Public Information Officer for the Colerain Township Police Department, said. "The last one, it seems to have spilled over to Talon Terrace. We haven't found evidence of a shooting yet. But there's still more going on. A handful of police agencies are looking into it and trying to piece it all together."

Police officers from Colerain Township, Springfield Township, Mt. Healthy and North College Hill responded to the reports.

"It's just a matter of being able to connect all the dots and see what it was and how it happened," Love said. "Immediately we had Springfield Township, Mount Healthy and North College Hill come over. Everyone was on high alert. It seems to have been settled now, (but) the question is what was all this?"
