Miami Beach is looking to bring in an older crowd for this year's spring break concert and event series, and the city has tapped headlining acts that shot to success in the 90s and early 2000s like Alanis Morissette, Juanes and Wilson Phillips.

The city's "Miami Beach Live!" concert and event series is a $3.2 million dollar project that will be centered around Lummus Park on the beach from March 4 to March 27, the Miami Herald reported.

Daytime events will include athletics and wellness activities along with movie nights and other musical performances as the city looks to clean up its image, especially after scenes from last year where the city saw over 1,000 arrests make and around 100 gun seizures amid a party-all-night spring break, the Associated Press reported. The city had to order an 8 p.m. curfew that officials had planned to extend until spring break season was over.

This year, the city's tourism director Lissette Garcia Arrogante said that the goal is to try and broaden the tourist demographic to bring in older tourists and families and not just college-age party crowds.

“We hope that the programming helps us move the needle a little bit in terms of changing the narrative and making it more inclusive,” Arrogante said.

A police officer died and another was injured after a police helicopter crashed in southern California Saturday night, officials said. The two officers were aboard the Huntington Beach Police Department's helicopter "HB1" responding to a disturbance call when it crashed into the water in Newport Beach, police chief Eric Parra said during a news conference.Officer Nicholas Vella, 44, died from injuries suffered in the crash, the police chief said."Our deepest sympathies to the family of Officer Vella," said Huntington Beach Mayor Barbara Delgleize. "This tragic accident serves as a reminder of the danger and the risks that our police officers put themselves in on a daily basis to protect our community."Another officer, a 16-year veteran, was rescued and taken to a hospital where he is in stable condition, police said.Authorities are uncertain why the helicopter crashed, and an investigation is underway as the police department inspects other aircrafts, Parra said.Huntington Beach police "and the law enforcement community have lost an officer that was truly dedicated to his job, that was doing what he loved doing, and this is a tragedy that we are investigating," Parra said. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and the Orange County Sheriff's Department major accident reconstruction team are investigating the crash, according to Parra.Huntington Beach and Newport Beach are adjoining seaside communities in Orange County, California. This crash comes on the heels of another helicopter wreck just hours earlier near the shoreline of Miami Beach. At approximately 1:10 p.m. Saturday, captured in a stunning video, a helicopter crashed into the Atlantic Ocean off Miami Beach, injuring two people. The two injured passengers were transported to Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami. Their conditions were described as "stable." A third passenger was not injured in the crash, according to Miami Beach Police Public Information Officer Ernesto Rodriguez.

MIAMI BEACH, Fla. — Miami Beach is home to one of the largest Art- Deco buildings from the last century, including Al Capone's house and the fight to preserve these buildings here and around the country.

“I grew up here in Miami Beach in an old house from the 1930s. I was always so fascinated by the older architecture,” said Daniel Ciraldo of the Miami Design Preservation League.

It was a late morning in Miami Beach when I met Ciraldo at the Art Deco Center in Miami Beach. He’s eager to explain what they do at the Design Preservation League.

“This talks about the main styles that we have in Miami Beach. Art-Deco being one of the predominant styles that we want to protect, but there’s also Mediterranean and mid-century modern,” said Ciraldo.

Yeah. He loves architecture. And he loves Miami Beach.

“What makes Miami Beach the state's number one beach for vacation destinations? We strongly believe it’s the arts and culture, the architecture, and the melting pot of different diverse visitors,” he said.

But Ciraldo and the MDPL have taken on a new fight. They want to preserve a house as a historic site.

“It sits on a man-made island in the middle of Biscayne Bay. And it was one of the first homes built on this island, Palm Island, in 1922,” he said.

The house that sits at 93 Palm Avenue had a very infamous owner. Notorious, bootlegger, mobster, and tax avoider, Al Capone.

“A lot of people will tell you he was a very bad person, and he was, but he also played a real role in the history of our city,” said Ciraldo.

The house was purchased over the summer by a developer who quickly applied for a demolition permit. That’s when Daniel and the MDPL stepped in.

We reached out to the owner but were told he had withdrawn the demolition application because they had sold the building.

The fight to preserve the Capone house and Miami Beach is emblematic of what different parts of the United States are grappling with as the country continues to build.

“Some of these sites which are historic, maybe recognized more so in the future,” said Scott Montgomery, an art history professor at the University of Denver.

“It’s not that old. We still have a memory there. But these places may become storied. They already are storied,” said Montgomery.

Montgomery researches music venues of the ‘60s and beyond. He’s worried that in the pursuit of development and profit, we may cast our history aside.

“My favorite cautionary tale is of the medieval walls of Florence, Italy. They tore the walls down to make circuit roads, to modernize and build it up,” he said, “But, since then, I think most of the city of Florence has lamented the loss of these walls that were part of its identity, part of its medieval charm.”

Ciraldo wants to make sure that Miami Beach doesn’t walk down a similar path.

“We have seen a big increase in applications to demolish historically significant but unprotected homes. In the last 15 years, there have been almost 300 of these homes that have been approved for demolition,” said Ciraldo, “It’s such an important part of our history. It would almost be like cookie dough ice cream and taking all the cookie dough out and just being left with vanilla. If we lose all of these homes to big white boxes, what set us apart from any other city?”

Rescue efforts at the site of a partially collapsed condo tower in Surfside, Florida, have been suspended as officials prepare to demolish the portion of the building that's still standing.

Miami-Dade Assistant Fire Chief Raide Jadallah said that first responders suspended their rescue mission at 4 p.m. ET on Saturday. He reiterated during a press conference that the demolition was necessary to keep rescue workers safe.

An emergency order approving the demolition has already been signed.

Workers will bring down the Champlain Towers South on Sunday ahead of the expected arrival of Tropical Storm Elsa.

Structural concerns about the building prompted the stoppage of search and rescue efforts for more than 12 hours on Thursday.

The tower partially collapsed in the early morning hours of June 24.

Earlier on Saturday, Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Lavine Cava confirmed that two more bodies were pulled from the debris overnight Friday into Saturday. The additional victims bring the death toll to 24, and another 126 who are presumed to be in the building at the time it crumbled are still missing.

Eighteen of the 22 people killed in the collapse have been identified. They are:

Hilda Noriega, 92

SURFSIDE, Fla. (WPTV) -- The first lawsuit has been filed in connection with the deadly collapse this week at a South Florida condominium.

The suit was filed late Thursday night, less than 24 hours after the Champlain Towers building partially collapsed in Surfside, Florida, killing at least four people.

It was filed on behalf of Manuel Drezner and attorney Brad Sohn of The Brad Sohn Law Firm for the victims involved in the tragedy.

The class-action lawsuit against the building association seeks to compensate the victims and says the defendant failed to "safeguard the lives and property" of residents.

The suit goes on to say that the association failed to "properly protect the lives and property" of the plaintiffs.

"According to public statements made by Defendant’s attorney Ken Direktor, 'repair needs had been identified' with regard to certain structural issues but had not been implemented; one of the most breathtakingly frightening tragedies in the history of South Florida followed," the lawsuit said.

The plaintiffs in the case are seeking restitution, recovery of damages and the cost of attorney fees following the tragedy.

They are seeking to recover $5 million for the victims, according to the lawsuit.

Sohn said he has been contacted by numerous victims who said they did have concerns over the structural integrity of the building prior to the partial collapse.

The attorney said the goal of the lawsuit is to try to make the victims whole again as soon as possible and to start holding those accountable so that evidence may be preserved.

Direktor, the attorney representing the Champlain Towers South Association, rejected the lawsuit.

"I don't know what caused this building to fall down, you don't know what caused this building to fall down, government officials do not know what caused this building to fall down, the engineers don't know what caused this building to fall down," Direktor said. "Please, explain to me how this lawyer knows what caused this building to fall down."

More than 150 people are still unaccounted for as first responders continue to sift through the rubble looking for survivors.

The building was constructed in 1981 and set to undergo a 40-year recertification process, which is mandated by code enforcement in Miami-Dade County.
