COST YOU 479. BUT THE ARERE DEFINITELY THINGS TO DO HERE AT HOME IF YOU WANT TO AVOID PAYING THOSE GAS PRICES AND TRAVELING SEEMS LIKE A LOT OF PEOPLE OUT FOR TASTED CINCINNATI THIS AFTERNOON AND ENJOYING THE CLEAR WEATHER AFTER ALL THE RAIN WE’VE HAD. YEAH, AND IT REALLY CLEEDAR UP JUST IN TIME FOR TASTE OF CINCINNATI. OBVIOUSLY A LOT OFRA GDUATIONS PART PARTIES GOING ON TAYOD AS WELL. SO REALLY REALLY PERFECTIT ME FOR ALL OF THIS. EITHER TO COME INTO TOWN AND TEMPERATURES THAT ARE WARMING UP THROUGH THIS WEEKEND AS WELL ON OFFICIAL START OF SUMMER. THEY’RE ON MEMORIAL DAY GOING TO BE FEELING LIKE SUMMER AS WELL. WE HAVE THIS DRY PATTERN THAT’S GOING TO BE STAYING AROUND HERE THROUGH THIS WEEKEND IN THROUGH MUCHF O NEXT WEEK AS WELL WITH THAT WARMING TREND MOVING IN HERE FOR THE NTEX SEVERAL DAYS AS WELL AND THEN EVENTUALLY SOME STORMS WILL RETNUR TO THAT FORECAST. WE’LL TRACK THAT OUT FOROU Y HERE AHEAD IN THE FORECAST AS WELL LIVE RADAR. YOU SEE A FEW CLOUDS OUT THERE ON SATELLITE DATA, BUT OVERALL HIGH PRESSURE SYSTEM REAYLL DOMINATING THE FORECAST FOR THIS WEEKEND AND INTO THE BEGINNING OF THISEX NT WEEK AHEAD. AND THAT IS DEFINITELY SOME GOOD NEWS FOR US BECAUSE THAT RAIN THREAT PRETTY MUCH SLOWO T NONE FOR THE NEXT SEVERAL DAYS. I HAD IN THE FORECTAS SO WE’VE BEEN TRAINCKG. THAT’S MAY RAIN FALL. WE’VE BEEN TALKING ABOUT IT. WE’VE HAD A LOT OF IT FOR THE PAST SEVERAL DAYS SEVERAL WEEKS HERE THIS MONTH AND THE DRY DAYS AHEAD. WE’RE KIND OF OFFICIALLY ENDING THAT WET STRKEA FOR THE MONTH. SO WE’RE ENDING RIGHT AROUND FIFTH WETTESTAY M ON RECORD WITH JUST OVER NINE INCSHE OF RAIN. JUST BIGELOW 1996 WITH 9.2 INCHES OF RAIN THERE JUST BARELY INCHING OUT THAT SIXTH PLACE AS WE GOT THAT RAINFALL YESTERDAY NOW SOME AREAS ENVE GOT MORE THAN THAT. THAT’S JUST WHAT CVG REPORTS AT THEIR SITE THE OFFICIAL REPORTING SITE FOR THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE AS IF YOU’RE HEADING OUT TO TASTE OF CINCINNATI. TIME PLENTY OF TIME OUT THERE FOR THIS EVENING AND TONIGHT GOING ON UNTIL ABOUT 11 PM. WE HAVE THOSE TEMPERATURES THAT ARE GOING TO BE COOLING DOWN INTO THE 60S SUNDAY INTO MONDAY A LITTLE BIT MUGGY RIGHT THERE. WE INCREASE THAT HUMIDITY IN THOSE TEMPERATURES GOING TO BE WARMING UP AS WELL. WE’RE TALKING MID0S 8 EVEN POTENTIALLY UPPER 80S. THEY’RE ON MEMORIAL DAY ON MONDAY IF YOU’RE NOT MAYBE GOING OUT TO TASTE IT CINCINNATI MAY NOT BE A BAD POOL OR EVEN BOAT DAY. HEADING OUT ACRSOS THE OHIO RIVER OR INTO ANY LAKES. WE HEAV PLENTY OF GOOD WEATHER AHEAD. NOT ENEV JUST MEMORIAL DAY, BUT EVEN PAST GOING TOIN TUESDAY WITH DRY. ARE THERE RIVER LEVSEL PRETTY PRETTY AVERAGE FOR RIGHT NOW AFTER ALL THAT RAINFALL THIS WEEK? WE LOOK AT FUTURECAST FEW CLOUDS OUT ABOUT FOUR THIS EVENING AND TONIGHT WILL INCREASE MAYBE SOME FOG OUT THERE EARLY SUNDAY MORNING FOR SOME AREAS, NOT EVERYONE DEALING WITH IT. BUT AS WE GET THROUGH THE MORNING AFTERNOON HOURS, WE’LL CLEAR THAT UP. SUNNY SKIES RETURNING THROUGHOUT THE BETTER PART OF YOUR DAY ON SUNDAY EVEN LASNGTI IN THROUGH ALL DAY ON MONDAY SUNSHINE TO GO AROUND FOR EVERYONE SOME HIGH LEVEL CLOUDS OUT THERE FOR THOSE HIDING OUT THIS EVENING RIGHT NOW. WE’RE DEALING WHIT 70S IN THAT FORECAST WINDS FAIRLY LIGHT OUT OF THE WEST BUT A NICE FIELD NONETHELESS AS WE STICK IN THOSE 70S ACROSS THE TRITA-STE AS WE GO INTO TONIGHT THOSE TEMPERATURES COOL DOWN THROUGH THE 60S EVENTUALLY GETNGTI INTO THE UPPER 50S VERY SEASONABLE FOR THIS TIME OF YEAR. NOTHING TOO BAD TO GO ALONG THERE AND THEN BY TOMORROW WE TALKED ABOUT IT BEFORE MID 80S RETURNING TO THAT FORECAST PLENTYF O SUNSHINE, AND THAT’S REALLY GOING TO BETA SRTING THAT WARM-UP PATTERN AS WE GO THROUGH. 70S 80S IN THE AFTERNOON, AND THEN WE’RE TALKING MAYBE EVEN A GRTEA TEMPERATURE COMING IN THERE FOR THE MIDDLE OF THE WEEK OU

SUMMER LIKE FOR WHAT WHAT WE CALL THE UNOFFICIAL START OF SUMMER. THE GOOD NEWSS I IT’S NOT STAYING AROUND FOREREV AS WE LOOK AHEAD IN THE FORECAST. EVENTUALLY. WE’LL BE TALKING ABOUT STORMS RETURNING BY THE MIDDLE OFHE T WEEK WITH DRY WEATHER THEN FOLLOWING THAT UP AND A LITTLE BIT OF COOLER AIR COMGIN IN THERE FOR THE WEEK AS WLEL FOR THAT KIND OF SECOND HALF OF THE WEEK FOR YOUR MEMORIAL DAY BREAKING IT DOWNOR F YOU IN THE MORNING AS I MENTIONED. THOSE TEMPERATURES PRETTY NICE FOR US EARLY MORNING. WE STARTED OUT RIGHT AROUND THE MID TO LOWER 60S WE GET IONT THE LATER MORNING ONCE THOSE IS ALMOST GET UNDERWAY KIND OF GETTING IN TOWARDS NOON TIME. WE HAVE THOSE TEMPERATURES THAT AREOI GNG TO BE INTO THE 70S EVENTUALLY GETTING THEIR WAY INTO THE 80S FOR THE AFTERNOON. AND THEN FOR THE EVENING IF YOU VEHA ANY PLANS OUT THERE LATER ON WE’RE TALKING MAYBE MID TO UPPER 80S IN THE FORECAST ALL AROUND THOUGH PLENTY OF SUNSHINE IN THAT FORECAST FOR YOUR MEMORIAL DAY. AND RIGHT NOW WE’RE KEEPING THOSE GUYSN O THE CLEAR SIDE. WE HAVE HIGH PRESSURE THAT’S DOMINATING THE FORECAST AS THAT MOVES FURTHER TO THE EAST THAT’S HELPING. THEN SOME OF THOSE SOUTHERLY WINDS WHAT THAT MNSEA FOR US IS MORE AIR COMING IN OUT OF THE GULF REGIONS BRINGING IN SOME HUMIDITY TOHE T FORECAST SOME MOISTURE AND THEN ALSO SOME WARMER AIR AS WE ARE TALKING ABOUT TEMPERATURES TTHA ARE GOING TO BE ABOVE AVERAGE. ALSO TALKING ABOUT THINGS TO THE SOUTH JUST SOUTH OF MEXICO IN THE EASTERN PACIFIC. WE HAVE OUR FIRST HURRICANE OF THE SEASON AGATHA THERE IN THE EASTERN PACIFIC AS I MENTIONED THAT’S GONNA BE MOVING ITS WAY TO THE SOUTHERN MEXICO COAST HERE OVER THE NEXT 12 24 HOURS. SO ALRDYEA GETTING INTO THAT HURRICANE SEASON HAVEN’T HAD ANYTHING IN THE ATLANTIC YET, BUT I’M SURE WE’LL GET MORE HERE OVER THE COMING WEEKS AND MONTHS AHEAD BACK HERE IN TRI-STATE GOOD NEWS FOR US. WE’RE STAYINGRY D FOR BOTH MONDAY INTO TUEAYSD EVEN MOST YOUR WEDNESDAY GOING TO BE ON THE DRY SIDE. I HAVE A LOW IMPACT IN THERE JUST BECAUSE IT’S LOOKING LIKE WE COULD SEE MAYBE SOME EVENING OVERNIGHT STORMS THERE ON WEDNESDAY THAT THEN CONTINUE THROUGUTHO THE DAY ON THURSDAY FUTURECAST AS YOU SEE THERE’S NOT MUCH TO SEE AND THAT IS SOME GOOD NEWS FOR OUR REGION IS WE HAVE SUNDAY SKIES FEWLO CUDS TRY TO STREAM THROUGH HERE MONDAY AFTERNOON INTO MONDAY EVENGNI AND EVEN INTO TUESDAY KIND OF THE SAME DEAL WHERE WE KEEP THE DRY SKIES GOING. YOU CLOUDS IN THERE BUT TEMPERATURES WARMING UP EVEN MORE. SO I ALREADY MENTIONED MEMORIAL DAY GETTING INTO THE MID-TOP OR 80S. HOW ABOUT TUESDAY GETTING INTO THE UPPER 80S NEAR 90 DEGREES AND THAT COULD BE OUR FSTIR 90 OF THE SPRING GOING IN TOWDSAR SUMMER AND THEN WEDNESDAY, I DID BACK OFF TSEHO TEMPERATURES JUST A BIT INTO THE MID 80S JUST DUE TO A LITTLE BIT OF CLOUD COVER AND THAT RAIN THREAT COMING INTO PLAY SO OUT THERE TONIGHT TEMPERATURES STILL SITTING AROUND 70 DEGREES OF SOUTHEAST WINDS HELPING KEEP THOSE TEMPERATURES UP. ALGON WITH THOSE DEW POINTS TRSTI-ATE AREA SEEING THE SAME THING 69 BATAVIA 65 IN HARRISON. AND AS WE GO AHEAD AND BAKRE DOWN THAT 7A FORECAST. HERE’S HOW IT LOOKS THOSE IMPACT DA

President Joe Biden lauded the sacrifice of generations of U.S. troops who died fighting for their country as he marked Memorial Day with the traditional wreath-laying ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery.Biden was joined by first lady Jill Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris and Harris' husband, Douglas Emhoff, for the 155th National Memorial Day Observance. He had a moment of contemplation in front of the wreath, which was adorned with flowers and a red, white and blue bow, and later bowed his head in prayer."We must never forget the price that was paid to protect our democracy," Biden said later in an address at Memorial Amphitheater. "We must never forget the lives these flags, flowers and marble markers represent.""Every year we remember," he said. "And every year it never gets easier."Monday's federal holiday honoring America's fallen service members came a day after Biden and Republican House Speaker Kevin McCarthy reached a final agreement on a deal that would raise America's debt limit and that now awaits approval by Congress. As it stands, the agreement would keep nondefense spending roughly flat in the 2024 fiscal year and increase it by 1% the following year. The measure would allow for 3% defense growth in fiscal 2024, to $886 billion, and then another 1% in fiscal 2025, to $895 billion.Biden has taken pride that his Democratic administration has overseen a time of relative peace for the U.S. military after two decades of war in Afghanistan and Iraq. It's been nearly 21 months since Biden ended the United States' longest war in Afghanistan, making good on a campaign promise to end a 20-year-old "forever war" that cost the lives of more than 2400 U.S. service members. The war in Afghanistan, however, ended in a deadly and chaotic fashion on Biden's watch in August 2021 with critics blasting the administration's handling of the evacuation of some 120,000 American citizens, Afghans and others as poorly planned and badly executed. The Biden administration last month released a review of the last days of the war, largely blaming his Republican predecessor, President Donald Trump, and asserting that Biden was "severely constrained" by Trump's decisions. The U.S. now finds itself leading a coalition of allies pouring tens of billions of dollars in military and economic aid into Ukraine as it tries to repel the Russian invasion, which appears to have no end in sight. While making clear that he has no desire for U.S. troops to enter the conflict, Biden has maintained that he sees the Russian effort to grab territory as an affront to international norms and has vowed to help Kyiv win, sending artillery, tanks and drones and recently agreeing to allow allies to train Ukrainian military on American F-16 jets. Before Monday's ceremony at the Arlington, Virginia, cemetery, the Bidens hosted a breakfast at the White House for members of veterans organizations, military service and military family organizations, surviving families of fallen U.S. troops, senior Department of Defense officials and other administration officials. The president and the first lady were scheduled to return to their home near Wilmington, Delaware, later Monday to spend the rest of the federal holiday.

<p>The war in Afghanistan, however, ended in a deadly and chaotic fashion on Biden's watch in August 2021 with critics blasting the administration's handling of the evacuation of some 120,000 American citizens, Afghans and others as poorly planned and badly executed.</p>
<p>The Biden administration last month released a review of the last days of the war, largely blaming his Republican predecessor, President Donald Trump, and asserting that Biden was "severely constrained" by Trump's decisions.</p>
<p>The U.S. now finds itself leading a coalition of allies pouring tens of billions of dollars in military and economic aid into Ukraine as it tries to repel the Russian invasion, which appears to have no end in sight.</p>
<p>While making clear that he has no desire for U.S. troops to enter the conflict, Biden has maintained that he sees the Russian effort to grab territory as an affront to international norms and has vowed to help Kyiv win, sending artillery, tanks and drones and recently agreeing to allow allies to train Ukrainian military on American F-16 jets.</p>
<p>Before Monday's ceremony at the Arlington, Virginia, cemetery, the Bidens hosted a breakfast at the White House for members of veterans organizations, military service and military family organizations, surviving families of fallen U.S. troops, senior Department of Defense officials and other administration officials.</p>
<p>The president and the first lady were scheduled to return to their home near Wilmington, Delaware, later Monday to spend the rest of the federal holiday.</p>

Soldiers of the 9th Infantry Regiment made a desperate retreat as North Korean troops closed in around them. A wounded, 18-year-old Army Pfc. Luther Herschel Story feared his injuries would slow down his company, so he stayed behind to cover their withdrawal.Video above: A brief history of Memorial DayStory's actions in the Korean War on Sept. 1, 1950, would ensure he was remembered. He was awarded the Medal of Honor, the nation's highest military honor, which is now displayed alongside his portrait at the National Infantry Museum, an hour's drive from his hometown of Americus, Georgia. But Story was never seen alive again, and his resting place long remained a mystery."In my family, we always believed that he would never be found," said Judy Wade, Story's niece and closest surviving relative. That changed in April when the U.S. military revealed lab tests had matched DNA from Wade and her late mother to bones of an unidentified American soldier recovered from Korea in October 1950. The remains belonged to Story, a case agent told Wade over the phone. After nearly 73 years, he was coming home.A Memorial Day burial with military honors was scheduled for Monday at the Andersonville National Cemetery. A police escort with flashing lights escorted Story's casket through the streets of nearby Americus on Wednesday after it arrived in Georgia."I don't have to worry about him anymore," said Wade, who was born four years after her uncle went missing overseas. "I'm just glad he's home."Among those celebrating Story's return was former President Jimmy Carter. When Story was a young boy, according to Wade, his family lived and worked in Plains on land owned by Carter's father, James Earl Carter Sr.Jimmy Carter, 98, has been under hospice care at his home in Plains since February. Jill Stuckey, superintendent of the Jimmy Carter National Historical Park, said she shared the news about Story with Carter as soon as she heard it."Oh, there was a big smile on his face," Stuckey said. "He was very excited to know that a hero was coming home."Story grew up about 150 miles (241 kilometers) south of Atlanta in Sumter County, where his father was a sharecropper. As a young boy, Story, who had a keen sense of humor and liked baseball, joined his parents and older siblings in the fields to help harvest cotton. The work was hard, and it didn't pay much."Momma talked about eating sweet potatoes three times a day," said Wade, whose mother, Gwendolyn Story Chambliss, was Luther Story's older sister. "She used to talk about how at night her fingers would be bleeding from picking cotton out of the bolls. Everybody in the family had to do it for them to exist."The family eventually moved to Americus, the county's largest city, where Story's parents found better work. He enrolled in high school, but soon set his sights on joining the military in the years following World War II.In 1948, his mother agreed to sign papers allowing Story to enlist in the Army. She listed his birthdate as July 20, 1931. But Wade said she later obtained a copy of her uncle's birth certificate that showed he was born in 1932 — which would have made him just 16 when he joined.Story left school during his sophomore year. In the summer of 1950, he deployed with Company A of the 1st Battalion, 9th Infantry Regiment to Korea around the time the war began. On Sept. 1, 1950, near the village of Agok on the Naktong River, Story's unit came under attack by three divisions of North Korean troops that moved to surround the Americans and cut off their escape.Story seized a machine gun and fired on enemy soldiers crossing the river, killing or wounding about 100, according to his Medal of Honor citation. As his company commander ordered a retreat, Story rushed into a road and threw grenades into an approaching truck carrying North Korean troops and ammunition. Despite being wounded, he continued fighting."Realizing that his wounds would hamper his comrades, he refused to retire to the next position but remained to cover the company's withdrawal," Story's award citation said. "When last seen he was firing every weapon available and fighting off another hostile assault."Story was presumed dead. He would have been 18 years old, according to the birth certificate Wade obtained. In 1951, his father received Story's Medal of Honor at a Pentagon ceremony. Story was also posthumously promoted to corporal.About a month after Story went missing in Korea, the U.S. military recovered a body in the area where he was last seen fighting. The unidentified remains were buried with other unknown service members at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific in Hawaii.According to the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency, more than 7,500 Americans who served in the Korean War remain missing or their remains have not been identified. That's roughly 20% of the nearly 37,000 U.S. service members who died in the war.Remains of the unknown soldier recovered near Agok were disinterred in 2021 as part of a broader military effort to determine the identities of several hundred Americans who died in the war. Eventually, scientists compared DNA from the bones with samples submitted by Wade and her mother before she died in 2017. They made a successful match.President Joe Biden announced the breakthrough on April 26 in Washington, joined by South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol."Today, we can return him to his family," Biden said of Story, "and to his rest."

AND SO WE’LL HAVE TO WATCH FOR THAT AS WE CONTINUE ON. BUT AS WE LOOK AT FUTURE CASTS, YOU SEE IT’S NOT REALLY PICKING UP ON A LOT OF THOSE SCATTERED, SCATTERED CHANCES AROUND PARTS OF CINCINNATI TO THE NORTH, VERY WELL, BECAUSE IT’S MOSTLY PICKING UP A LOT OF THIS THREAT, STAYING INTO NORTHERN KENTUCKY UNTIL WE KIND OF GET INTO LATE THIS MORNING, INTO THE AFTERNOON, WE COULD SEE MAYBE A FEW MORE SCATTERED SHOWERS START TO WORK THEIR WAY MORE INTO THE GREATER CINCINNATI. AND THEN INTO THE REST OF OUR REGION. A LITTLE BIT MORE THERE AS WELL. THIS EVENING. NOW, AGAIN, THIS IS GOING TO BE SHOWING A LOT MORE THAN WHAT WE SEE ON RADAR AT TIMES. BUT YOU GET A GENERAL SENSE OF THE SCATTERED NATURE OF IT THROUGHOUT TODAY. AND AS WE GO INTO MONDAY, I MENTIONED STILL NOT A WASHOUT, BUT WE COULD SEE A FEW ISOLATED TO SCATTERED SHOWERS OUT THERE. AGAIN, FOUR TOMORROW THROUGH KIND OF THE MORNING, A FEW ISOLATED CHANCES AGAIN BY THE EVENING, BUT WE’LL STILL HAVE PLENTY OF DRY TIME TO ENJOY THE OUTDOORS. ENJOY ANY OF THE PARADES HAPPENING FOR TOMORROW AS WELL. FIFTIES RIGHT NOW, EVEN A FEW 60 SHOWING UP THIS MORNING, 61 IN FLORENCE, 59 HERE IN CINCINNATI, 54 IN HARRISON, 55 OUT THERE IN BATESVILLE. AS WE GO THROUGH TODAY, THOSE TEMPERATURES NOT REALLY GOING TO BE MOVING MUCH. SO BESIDES THE SPOTTY RAIN, CHANCES WILL STAY IN THE SIXTIES. WE HAVE HYDE PARK FARMER’S MARKET TODAY THERE AT THE PARK AND IT OPENS AT 930 WITH LOWER SIXTIES BY CLOSING TIME AROUND ONE. WE’RE TALKING ONLY THE MID 60. SAME GOES FOR TASTERS. CINCINNATI HERE IN DOWNTOWN FIFTH STREET WE ARE SEEING THOSE LOWER SIXTIES ONLY TURNING INTO THE MID 60 IS THEN LATER ON TONIGHT WE’LL KEEP IT CLOUDY WE’LL KEEP IT MILD WITH TEMPERATURES THAT ARE REALLY ONLY STAYING IN THE LOWER 60. SO WITH THAT RAIN TODAY, WINDS STAYING RELATIVELY LIGHT TO MODERATE, 5 TO 10 MILES AN HOUR OUT OF THE NORTHEAST. THEN LATER ON TONIGHT AFTER WE GET THROUGH THE OVERNIGHT HOURS INTO TOMORROW MORNING, WE’LL SEE TEMPERATURES GETTING DOWN TO AROUND THE MID 50. SO FAIRLY MILD OUT THERE TO START YOUR MONDAY AS WELL WITH TEMPERATURES BACK INTO THE 70. SO THAT’S SOME GOOD NEWS THERE ON MONDAY AS WELL. WE’RE BACK TO A SEASONAL FEEL. BUT THEN, AS I MENTIONED, AFTER THAT, AS WE GO THROUGH THE REST OF THE WEEK, A SUMMER SURGE WITH HEAT AND HUMIDITY GOING TO BE COMING BACK INTO THAT FORECAST WITH EIGHTIES AND POTENTIALLY NEAR 9

<p>This year, she got her acknowledgment. The Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund will add Larry Byerly’s name to its annual <a class="Link" href="https://www.vvmf.org/Honor-Roll/">“In Memory” Honor Roll program,</a> a list of lives the war claimed after it had officially ended.</p>
<p>“I live every day to honor him,” Byerly-Lamm said of her father. “That’s my goal. I know he’s proud of me, but I live every single day because he can’t.”</p>
<p>Byerly lost his eye and much of his face to a grenade explosion during the war. He met Byerly-Lamm’s mother during his recovery, which involved extensive surgeries, and corresponded with her via letters and telephone calls from the hospital.</p>
<p>The couple became engaged three days after meeting in person in 1971. Byerly got a job as a postal worker in Newport.</p>
<p>He died in 1980, when his daughter was three years old.</p>
<p>She remembers brief moments from that time: “Riding on his shoulders, walking around the block, him pulling me in a wagon around the block.”</p>
<p>Her mother never remarried.</p>
<p>Although her father had been out of the service for years at the time of his death, Byerly-Lamm believes internal and mental injuries claimed his life. </p>
<p>Post-traumatic stress was a little-understood idea at the time he was hospitalized, she said; and the physical strain of surviving a grenade blast was evident even after he returned to civilian life.</p>
<p>The Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund’s “In Memory” program is for veterans like him — those whose deaths were connected to their service but occurred after the war. It’s a supplement to the famous memorial wall listing the war’s in-field casualties.</p>
<p>“I sobbed when I got the letter saying he was accepted,” Byerly-Lamm said Friday. “Because it’s like, finally, 40 years after he passed away he’s going to be honored for that, for his service and his sacrifice.”</p>
<p>Byerly-Lamm honors her father by keeping photos of him in her home, sharing his story and wearing the Marine necklace that his father passed down to him.</p>
<p>She’s also a licensed clinical counselor who focuses on helping veterans through her work.</p>
<p>“Even if I did not get enough years with him — because I only had three, my mom only had eight — he made an immeasurable impact on my life,” she said. “He is part of the reason who I am. He shaped who I am because of what he did for our country and because of the person that he was.”</p>

On Memorial Day we take time to remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice. The freedoms we enjoy come at a cost, and for one South Louisiana family, that message is a daily reminder of their loss."The insignia on that is for the 5th Marine and amphibious corps, and it's got an alligator," Kaanan Fugler says to her son, Aiden, while touring the National World War II Museum in New Orleans.Fugler's family knows firsthand the true meaning of Memorial Day."My first memory of the blur after he passed away was telling my children in a small room in the hospital that their daddy wasn't coming home," Fugler said.Fugler's husband, Staff Sgt. Matthew Mackey, served our country in both the U.S. Marine Corps and U.S. Army for nearly two decades. Around the Fourth of July in 2010, Matthew was in a serious motor vehicle wreck while on active duty. He spent weeks in the hospital, but ultimately lost his life, leaving behind his wife and five children. "It's painful and frustrating to know that I won't grow up with him in my life," son Aiden said. Fugler added, "For us, Memorial Day is every day. And on Memorial Day, we like to make sure that we're remembering everybody else, his brothers and sisters. It was important to Matt, the brotherhood he had through his service."In New Orleans, the National World War II Museum preserves the history of that brotherhood. "Almost half a million American men and women lost their lives in World War II, and many of them left behind wives and children, brothers and sisters, and those individuals were affected for the rest of their lives," Tom Czekanski, senior curator and restoration manager of the National World War II Museum said.To keep Matthew's legacy alive, the family started visiting his gravesite annually, and also found a way to pay tribute to others we've lost. "Went and bought all the flags we had in the area, and took my kids out there, and we walked around to veterans' headstones, and we placed flags, and then from that teaching moment, we went and did that the next year and the next year," Fugler said. That tradition continues this Memorial Day. As a Gold Star matriarch, Fugler keeps her family's focus on gratitude and honor."We are some of the most resilient people, and have been through and know the cost of freedom, and know that everything that we take for granted every day, they made sure that we could."

<p>TAYLOR MILL, Ky. — A Taylor Mill neighborhood was decked out for Memorial Day this weekend, thanks to one mom who didn't let a recent knee surgery stop her.</p>
<p>Stephanie Whithorn planted 100 American flags along Sunset Drive in Taylor Mill Saturday evening; she bought out two stores of their entire stock of small American flags. She planted them so her neighbors would wake up to find them on Sunday morning.</p>
<p><span class="VideoEnhancement" data-video-disable-history=""></p>
<p>Knee surgery didn't stop NKY mom from sharing American flags for Memorial Day</p>
<p></span></p>
<p>"The next morning, my neighbor directly across the street was cutting his grass and stopped me," she said. "(He) asked if I was the one who put the flags out, and he started laughing. I say yes, and he said it was a very pleasant thing to wake up to."</p>
<p>Whithorn has multiple family members who serve or have served in the U.S. military. </p>
<p>For Memorial Day on Monday, she said she'd be in Covington handing out bottled water and flags at the city's parade.</p>

EXPLAINS. AN OLD ELLICOTT CITY, THERE’S ONE SHOP ON MAIN STREET ONCE YOU COME INTO THE GAME STORE. YOU SEE THIS THIS MAGNIFICENT SPACE MARINE THERE PLUS WE’RE MARINES WHO’S TWO OWNERS WITNESSED FROM THE BATTLEFIELD. IT HITS HOME RIGHT TO THE SOUL FELLOW CONRADES IN WAR WHO PAID THE ULTIMATE SACRIFICE FOR THE UNITED STATES INSTEAD OF CONCENTRATING ON WHAT WE WERE DOING. AT THE TIME TO GET US OUT OF THAT MINDSET. WE THOUGHT ABOUT THE BUSINESS CAME UP WITH THE NAME THE LOGO. THAT’S WHY FOR THE CO-OWNERS OF GAMER CORPS MEMORIAL DAY ISN’T JUST A DAY FOR TRAVELING BUT TO EDUCATE THROUGH THEIR BUSINESS HAVING DEPLOYED TO COMBAT. FIVE SEPARATE TIMES MYSELF TO BOTH IRAQ AND AFGHANISTAN. I KNOW SEVERAL. IF NOT A DOZENS OF MARINES SOLDIERS SAILORS AIRMEN THAT NEVER GOT AS BUSINESSES ON MAIN STREET PREPARE FOR THIS HOLIDAY WEEKEND ONE ECONOMIST TELLS 11 NEWS. THIS MEMORIAL DAY COULD BE A MUCH-NEEDED REBOUND FOR THE ENTIRE STATE OBVIOUSLY OUR HOSPITALITY AND TOURISM SECTOR ARE PROBABLY, YOU KNOW POISED TO YOU KNOW, RECOVER PARTIALLY FROM FROM LAST YEAR OBVIOUSLY DINING ESTABLISHMENTS ARE GOING TO SEE YOU KNOW, A BIG BOONS SOME OF THE SPORTING VENUES. I MEAN, I’M GONNA YOU KNOW, SEE SEE BIG BIG BOOST IN ATTENDANCE. WELL MANY ARE TRAVELING TO THE BEACHES OR PLAN TO ENJOY SOME OUTDOOR COOKING THE EVENTS UNDERWAY AT THIS GAMING SHOP OR MORE THAN JUST A BOOST FOR THEIR OWN BUSINESS THIS WEEKEND FOR US. IT MEANS JUST TO BRING THE COMMUNITY TOGETHER. WAY ARE THE SOLDIERS WHO AREN’T HERE BY KEEPING THEIR MEMORIES ALIVE, EVEN IF IT’S THROUGH GAMING, I THINK A LOT OF PEOPLE NEED TO TAKE A SECOND IF NOT A MINUTE AND REMEMBER THAT THE REASON THEY HAVE THE DAY OFF THE REASON THEY’RE GOING TO A BARBECUE OR BEACH IS NOT JUST TO BE WITH FAMILY AND CELEBRATE, YOU KNOW A DAY OFF FROM WORK MEMORIAL DAY IS FOR THOSE THAT ARE FALLING AND DIDN’T GET TO COME BACK AND ELLICOTT CITY.

With an unsurprising boost in travel this Memorial Day weekend, many businesses are preparing to welcome customers in their stores for the holidays. But for two co-owners of a business in Ellicott City, Maryland, the holiday has much deeper meaning. In Old Ellicott City, there's one shop on Main Street whose two owners witnessed from the battlefield fellow comrades in war that paid the ultimate sacrifice for the United States."Instead of concentrating on what we were doing at the time to get us out of that mindset, we thought about the business, came up with the name, the logo," said Julio Alegria, co-owner Gamers Corps. That's why for the co-owners of Gamers Corps, Memorial Day isn't just a day for traveling, but to educate through their business."Having deployed to combat five separate times myself to both Iraq and Afghanistan, I know several, if not dozens, of Marines, soldiers, sailors, airmen that never got to come home," said Marine Master Sgt. Tim McManus and co-owner of Gamers Corps. As businesses on Main Street prepare for the holiday weekend, one economist told sister station WBAL that this Memorial Day could be a much needed rebound for the entire state."Obviously, our hospitality and tourism sector are probably poised to recover partially from last year obviously, dining establishments are going to see a big boost. Some of the sporting venues are going to see a big boost in attendance," said Daraius Irani, chief economist of RESI at Towson University. And while many are traveling to the beaches or plan to enjoy some outdoor cooking, the events underway at the gaming shop are more than just a boost for their own business this weekend, but a way to honor the soldiers who aren't here by keeping their memories alive even if it's through gaming."For us, it means just to bring the community together," Alegria said."I think a lot of people need to take a second, if not a minute, to remember that the reason that they have the day off, the reason that they are going to a barbecue, or beach is not just to be with family and celebrate that they're off from work. Memorial Day is for those who have fallen and didn't get to come back," McManus said.

<p>CHICAGO — Travel should see a massive rebound this Memorial Day weekend. By some estimates, an increase of 60% from last year’s record low. With increases in vaccinations, relaxed mask mandates, and many people ready for "revenge travel," Americans are expected to take to the air and roads with a vengeance.</p>
<p>“We're going to spend more money, maybe take more trips or stay longer,” said Jeanette McGee with AAA.</p>
<p>Updated CDC guidelines say fully vaccinated people taking proper precautions can travel domestically at low risk.</p>
<p>“It's not completely back to normal yet, and I think for a lot of people, they will want to stay a little closer to home or travel to areas that they have a lot of comfort with for a while,” said Melanie Lieberman, senior travel editor with the travel and lifestyle media platform The Points Guy.</p>
<p>According to AAA, 34 million Americans are planning Memorial Day road trips, with another 2.5 million expected to travel by air.</p>
<p>“There are a lot of people traveling, so, you know, those COVID roads, where there were open roads and not so much traffic, that's not so much the case anymore,” McGee said.</p>
<p>The top five road trip destinations this holiday weekend:</p>
<p>1. Las Vegas, Nevada<br />2. Orlando, Florida <br />3. Myrtle Beach, Florida <br />4. Denver, Colorado<br />5. Nashville, Tennessee</p>
<p>Pent-up demand also means vacationing will be expensive. Flight prices have been climbing since April.</p>
<p>“This is a popular time for people to travel anyway,” said Lieberman. "Families are reconnecting. There are a lot of factors converging, and all of this is compounded by the fact that there’s still reduced inventory.”</p>
<p>Low inventory and high demand for rental cars could leave some scrambling for a ride. Rental car pricing in places like Arizona, Hawaii, and Florida has spiked by 300%.</p>
<p>“As much as $134 a day, if not more,” said McGee. “So, definitely best to plan ahead when you're looking at rentals.”</p>
<p>Experts say there will be a pain at the pump as well.</p>
<p>“Gas prices are the most expensive we've seen since 2014, and they're not going to get cheaper anytime soon,” said McGee.</p>
<p>For those hoping to avoid crowds, travel experts suggest reconsidering travel to some of the most popular vacation destinations.</p>
<p>“It's important to use a travel agent, someone you can ask questions to understand what's open, what restrictions are in place just again, so you can enjoy that vacation, especially if you're planning an international trip,” said McGee.</p>
<p>It’s important to remember the pandemic is not over yet and case increases could change things at your final destination.</p>
<p>“It's also a really good time to think about getting a travel insurance policy, even if that's something you didn't do before the pandemic. It's a great way to protect your travel investment,” said Lieberman.</p>
<p>Experts say successful summer travel will be found where planning ahead meets flexibility.</p>

THAT’S A SMALL EXTRA STEP THEY’RE WILLING TO TAKE FOR THEIR KIDS TO ENJOY A NORMAL SUMMER AGA -- SHERRI CEVALIER MOVED TO CINCINNATI WITH HER FOUR-YEAR-OLD DAUGHTER LAST YEAR AMID A PANDEMIC, AND JUST DAYS BEFORE MANY PLAYGROUNDS AND OUTDOOR POOLS CLOSED. &gt;&gt; YOU KNOW IT WAS A LITTLE DISAPPOINTING CONSIDERING IT WAS THE HEIGHT OF THE SUMMER, SO H AND SHE DID NOT HAVE MUCH TO DO. HELENA: NOT MUCH TO DO FOR A VIBRANT LITTLE GIRL LOOKING FO ADVENTURE AND FRIENDS. BUT THIS SUMMER PARENTS LIKE CEVALIER ARE LOOKING FORWARD TO THEIR KIDS BEING ABLE TO SPLASH AROUND TOGETHER AGAIN. &gt;&gt; I’M EXCITED ABOUT THE POOL OPENING AND IT BEING SO CLOSE WE’RE JUST AROUND THE BLOCK. HELENA: THE CINCINNATI RECREATION COMMISSION ANNOUNCING 13 POOLS WILL BE OPEN THIS SUMMER FOUR OF THEM DUNHAM, MCKIE, PLEASANT RIDGE AND HIRSCH SET TO OPEN THIS COMING WEEKEND. &gt;&gt; THIS PAST YEAR HAS JUST BEEN SO CRAZY, AND I THINK IT’S IMPORTANT FOR THE KIDS TO GET OUT, BE AROUND OTHER KIDS, HAVE FUN. HELENA: SEVERAL PUBLIC PLAYGROUNDS AND POOLS DID CLOSE FOR A LITTLE LAST YEAR. SOME GRADUALLY REOPENED AND TIMES YOU COULD VISIT THE POOL WERE LIMITED. THIS YEAR, YOU’LL STILL NEED TO MAKE A RESERVATION. THERE WILL BE TWO THREE-HOUR SWIM BLOCKS AT EACH POOL WITH A HALF HOUR BREAK IN BETWEEN FOR CLEANING. THE POOLS WILL OPEN AT NOON ON THE WEEKEND, WITH A SELECT FEW OPEN SEVEN DAYS A WEEK. &gt;&gt; I’M VERY EXCITED FOR THE KIDS TO HAVE SOMETHING TO DO BESIDES RUN AROUND AND FROLIC IN THE GRASS. HELENA: RAFEVEL GREEN HAS WORKED AT THE MCKIE RECREATION CENTER FOR TWO YEARS ONE OF THE PLACES KIDS WILL BE ABLE TO SWIM MONDAY THROUGH SUNDAY HE’S EXPECTING THIS TO BE BUSY. &gt;&gt; I THINK AROUND HERE THERE’ NOT A LOT TO DO SO THERE’S ALWAYS LINES OF PEOPLE OUT HERE WAITING. AND IF YOU DON’T CALL BEFORE YOU WONT GET ON THE WAITING LIST. HELENA: AS A LIBERATION FOR THESE POOLS OPENING WILL TAKE PLACE THIS COMING SATURDAY AT 11:30 AT THE RECREATION CENTER.

It's already feeling like summer, and soon, kids in Cincinnati will have a way to cool off.The Cincinnati Recreation Commission announced 13 pools will be open this summer. Four of them, Dunham, Mckie, Pleasant Ridge and Hirsch, set to open this coming weekend.Several public playgrounds and pools did close for a little last year. Some gradually reopened, and times you could visit the pool were limited. This year, you'll still need to make a reservation. There will be two 3-hour swim blocks at each pool, with a half-hour break in between for cleaning. The pools will open at noon on the weekend, with a select few open seven days a week.Rafevel Green has worked at the Mckie Recreation Center for two years, one of the places kids will be able to swim Monday through Sunday. He's expecting it to be busy."I think around here there's not much to do, so there's always lines of people out here waiting and if you don't call before, you won't get on the waiting list," Green said. For the pools opening this coming weekend, reservations will be taken starting Wednesday, May 26. For the rest of the pools, reservations will begin Friday, June 4.You can make reservations here.
