Mega Millions nears $1 billion jackpot as streak without winner continues

Mega Millions’ jackpot for Friday has grown to $940 million as the multi-state lottery has failed to produce a winner in almost three months.

No one matched 25-29-33-41-44 and a Mega Ball of 18 during Tuesday's drawing. It's possible the jackpot could grow ahead of Friday's drawing based on ticket sales.

While no one matched all six numbers on Tuesday, six tickets that matched the five white balls were sold throughout the U.S. Three of the winners will claim $1 million prizes while three others will earn $4 million as they added the optional Megaplier to their tickets.

According to Mega Millions, two of the $4 million prizes were sold in Mississippi and South Dakota, marking the largest Mega Millions prizes ever given away in those states.

The last time the Mega Millions jackpot was this large was on July 29, 2022, when a $1.337 billion ticket was sold in Illinois.

The jackpot marks the sixth-largest in U.S. history for all lotteries, behind three other Mega Millions drawings and two Powerball jackpots.

Mega Millions produced six winners in 2022.

Mega Millions is played in all states except Hawaii, Alaska, Nevada, Utah, and Alabama. The odds of drawing all six numbers in Mega Millions are 1 in nearly 302 million.

Friday's drawing will be held at 11 p.m. ET.

Friday’s Mega Millions jackpot will top $1.3 billion for just the second time in the history of the lottery.

While the winner is set to make a considerable fortune, other groups stand to make a lot as well.

According to the National Association of State and Provincial Lotteries, U.S. lotteries generated over $98 billion in revenue. Of that amount, $63 billion, or about 65 percent, was returned to winners. Over $28 billion are paid out to various beneficiaries of lotteries. In many states, those funds are strictly allocated to public schools.

In some areas, those funds are distributed to the state’s general fund, which can be used for practically any purpose of government.

A small amount of the funds also go to the operation of the lottery. Retailers also can claim prizes for selling large winning tickets.

In general, lotteries might have large payouts, but the chances of making money off the lottery are slim. For every $100 a person spends on the lottery, they could expect a $65 return, meaning they would be out $35. The chances of winning Friday's Mega Millions jackpot stand at about one in 302 million.

Woman learns she won MI lottery after checking spam folder

A Michigan woman stumbled upon an email that said she won $3 million in the Michigan lottery and it wasn't a scam.

Laura Spears said she bought her winning ticket online at MichiganLottery.com.

“I saw an ad on Facebook that the Mega Millions jackpot was getting pretty high, so I got on my account and bought a ticket,” said Spears.

Unknowingly, she matched five white balls in the Dec. 31, 2021, Mega Millions drawing.

“A few days later, I was looking for a missing email from someone, so I checked the spam folder in my email account," Spears said. "That’s when I saw an email from the Lottery saying I had won a prize. I couldn’t believe what I was reading, so I logged in to my Lottery account to confirm the message in the email. It’s all still so shocking to me that I really won $3 million!”

Spears told the Michigan Lottery that she plans on retiring early and sharing her winnings with her family.

The 55-year-old said she isn't done playing the lottery. However, she has made some changes to her email account.

“I definitely added the Michigan Lottery to my safe senders list just in case I ever get lucky enough to receive another email about a huge prize,” Spears said.

Despite varying number of lottery winners, experts say there are no lucky states

Somebody has finally won the big Powerball jackpot. So far, we know the winning ticket was sold a store in Maryland. The single ticket is worth more than $731 million.

Maryland does allow its lottery winners to remain anonymous. The state itself has only had three Powerball winners ever, including the latest one.

It's not really considered a "lucky" state if you compare it to places like Indiana, where they've had 39 Powerball winners, or Missouri, where they've had 31.

So, is there such a thing as a lucky state? Experts in math and statistics say no.

“Every lottery ticket has the same odds, no matter where it's bought, no matter when it's bought,” said Dr. Lew Lefton, a Georgia Tech University faculty member who teaches math.

Lefton says it's expected to have clusters of winners, whether its broken down by state, zip code, or even gender.

It would be strange if the winners were evenly distributed by state.

“Random processes always have clusters and empty spaces. If you think about just throwing random points of paint on a canvas, some of them are going to be close together. Some of them are going to be far apart. That's just normal,” said Lefton.

Population density doesn't really have an effect on the chances of winning. Buying more tickets also doesn't really increase your chances of winning. It just increases the jackpot.

“The real odds are increased, but it's incrementally increased. It's so small that it's not substantial unless you start buying literally hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of tickets,” said Lefton.

Lefton says if you're going to play the lottery, you're better off buying just one ticket.

“Don't expect to win, but just enjoy the uncertainty of being wealthy for a moment and the possibility. That's enough entertainment for your $2,” said Lefton.

The jackpot for tomorrow night's Mega Millions drawing is up to nearly $1 billion.

The jackpot for the Mega Millions lottery game has grown to $1 billion, hours before numbers will be drawn Friday night.

The Mega Millions website says the jackpot is $1 billion, but if the winner opted for the cash option, it would be $739.6 million.

The growth is thanks to more than four months without a top prize winner, 37 number draws have failed to produce a grand prize winner.

This is only the third time a lottery jackpot has grown so large, the last time in 2018. On October 23, 2018, the Mega Millions jackpot reached $1.537 billion, and was won by a single ticket sold in South Carolina. It was the world's largest lottery prize ever won on a single ticket, according to Mega Millions.

Mega Millions is played in 45 states across the country, plus the District of Columbia and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

A grand prize winner must match all six numbers and the gold "Mega Ball". Numbers are drawn on Tuesday and Friday evening. The game started in 1996, with just six states participating, and was originally called the Big Game.
