Mason teacher and Sycamore School District coach John Benham is running 50 miles in one day, but it's for a good cause.

With the month of May being Mental Health Awareness month, Benham is raising awareness and help break down stigmas surrounding mental health by running.

On Saturday, Bigger Than The Trail, a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization, is hosting an in-person and virtual race to help raise funds for mental health counseling.

Benham has decided to run 50 miles and is asking for donations and pledges to help reach his goal of $5,000. All of the proceeds will directly supply mental health counseling for those in need.

If he can reach his goal, Bigger Than The Trail will be able to offer a full year of counseling for 2 to 3 people. Benham says the counseling is $180 a month and approximately $4,300 to $6,500 is needed to achieve this. The counseling can also be split between multiple individuals in need.

Benham will be running back and forth on Mason-Montgomery Road until he reaches his goal of 50 miles (10 times back and forth on a 5 mile route).

Benham says he's named this event 'R250' because it signifies his run to 50 as well as his 50th birthday, as Saturday is his birthday!

LOVELAND, Ohio —

A roadblock is on the way for one of the region’s most popular bike trails because a new bridge will take all summer to install.

The Loveland Bike Trail will be closed at a distance from downtown that takes about one minute to walk.

The bridge will be closed for most of March and will reopen, but will then close down again from May until October.

“I don't think it's going to make too many people happy. The timing is not what I would call the best,” said Loveland resident Julie Dolbier.

“That is very disappointing because that is the riding season,” said Diana Hodges-Batzka. “It just means we will be going to the other parts of this wonderful trail that Ohio has.”

That’s the concern. The trail is important to downtown Loveland businesses.

Now, people hitting the trail at Loveland can’t go north toward Morrow and Lebanon, which is the most popular route.

Loveland City Manager David Kennedy said the Ohio Department of Natural Resource’s plan was to replace the bridge in January, but supply chain issues pushed it back to the summer.

“They're doing the right thing, timing, it's not good. It's not good for our businesses, but I'm absolutely supportive of the project,” Kennedy said.

Business owners are remaining optimistic.

“You’re always tempted to think worse-case scenario, but I think, for the most part, if you’re committed to doing good work, people want to come and find you anyway,” said the owner of Narrow Path Brewing Company, Chad Powers.

A search of a Fairfield Twp. lake came up empty for a resident missing since May, according to the Journal-News.

Fairfield Twp. police Sgt. Brandon McCroskey said officials received information last weekend there might be evidence related to the search for Michael McKenney, 29.

“We talked to a couple of people and we, of course, wanted to verify that was accurate so they had the Butler County dive team come out and check and we didn’t find anything at all,” he said.

McCroskey said they searched Wednesday the water near the Linden Lake Apartments, and the police department will follow every lead they receive “so we can try to get some closure for the family.” However, part of the problem, he said, is some of the people believed to be involved in McKenney’s disappearance are now dead.

A possible male involved died from an overdose, and a woman directly involved died from medical issues, McCroskey said.

“I can’t even say if there was foul play because at this point there’s not enough (evidence) to say that,” he said.

McKenney was last seen on May 22 and was reported missing the next day. His car and personal items, including a cellphone, were found at Hueston Woods. McKenney is 5-8 and has two full sleeves of tattoos. The family has set up a GoFundMe page in order to hire a private investigator.

ROSS TOWNSHIP, Ohio — The Butler County prosecutor's office said Friday that there will be no charges brought against any law enforcement officers who shot a Ross Township man attempting "suicide by cop" in May.

"After the independent investigation and review by the Butler County Grand Jury, no charges against any officer or agent have been returned," Butler County Prosecutor Michael Gmoser wrote in a statement. "The use of force as stated was justified."

Officials with the Butler County Sheriff's Office said around 12:30 p.m. on May 10, deputies were serving a federal warrant from the Department of Homeland Security at a home in the 4200 block of Jennifer Drive in Ross Township. The prosecutor's office said the suspect, 26-year-old Alex Hoskins, pointed a loaded pistol at the deputies "for the stated purpose of eliciting a lethal response..."

“The deputy told him to drop the weapon. He didn’t. The deputy shot him,” Jones said. "You can’t point guns at the police and expect the police to let you shoot them first."

Jones said Hoskins sustained a non-life-threatening injury. Investigators interviewed Hoskins at the Butler County Sheriff's Office, and he confessed to possession of child pornography as well as sending and receiving images and videos of child pornography.
