MILWAUKEE, Wis. — A Rhode Island man vacationing in Wisconsin has died after he fell more than 70 feet while attempting to walk across a rising drawbridge in Milwaukee.

According to a Milwaukee County Medical Examiner's Office report, 77-year-old Richard Dujardin of Providence, Rhode Island, was walking across the Kilbourn Avenue Bridge with his wife Monday afternoon when it began to rise, NBC affiliate TMJ4 reported.

The report said his wife, Rose-Marie Dujardin, made it across the bridge. However, Richard Dujardin, who was looking at an iPad while walking, was still in the middle when it began rising, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported.

"The lights, bells, and arms came down at each end of the bridge," the report said according to the news outlets. "However, Richard was hard of hearing, and it is thought that he didn't notice them."

The report states that the 77-year-old tried to catch up to his wife, but couldn't, so he grabbed onto the side railing but lost his grip and fell 71 feet to the pavement below, the news outlets reported.

According to the report, the news outlets reported that Richard Dujardin suffered head trauma and died from his injuries at the scene.

The bridge is controlled by the city's Department of Public Works, the Associated Press reported.

In a statement to the news outlets, Interim Commissioner of Public Works Jerrel Kruschke said the operator was "fully trained," and is in his fourth year as a bridge operator and had opened bridges hundreds of times.

Kruschke added that the bridge operator was on leave and that he "was connected with the City’s Employee Assistance Program for counseling," the newspaper reported.

Milwaukee Police said in a statement that there is no suspicion of a criminal act, but the investigation was ongoing, the Associated Press reported.

Rose-Marie Dujardin told TMJ4 that her husband of 54 years was a reporter at the Providence Journal.

COLLEGE CORNER, Ohio —

Human remains found in Hueston Woods are believed to be those of a man missing for more than two years.

Michael McKenney, 28, was last seen May 23, 2020. Investigators said there are strong indicators he has now been found.

“I'm totally not quitting until he's positively identified,” said McKenney’s mother Yolanda Middleton. “I'm a fighter. I'm not a quitter and I'm not going to quit until I know for certain, but everything points to that it is him.”

Texas Equisearch, Christian Aid Ministries and other volunteers have continued searching and Wednesday they made the discovery in a remote part of Hueston Woods.

“It's almost like you're going through the whole process over again, to be honest, from day one,” Middleton said. “I didn't know if we'd ever, ever come to this day.”

The family said there were some of McKenney’s personal effects found with the remains and some specific physical characteristics were the same.

“There were some things definitely strongly suggesting that it was him,” said Fairfield Township Police Sgt. Brandon McCroskey.

McCroskey said the cause of death could come with the coroner’s report, but so much time has passed, it could also be undetermined.

The case is in such early stages police cannot yet rule out foul play, however, there are no obvious indicators that anyone else was involved.

“I will say that we're not looking for anybody right now. We're not looking for any suspects at this point,” McCroskey said.

The identity will be confirmed by DNA. That could take weeks or even months to get back.

CINCINNATI —

A deadly shooting is under investigation in Norwood.

Norwood police said they were called to a home in the 5100 block of Hunter Avenue around 1 a.m., where they found a man who had been shot in the chest.

He was taken to UC Medical Center, where he died.

Neighbors said they heard people arguing, followed by one gunshot. Afterward, neighbors said people scattered from the home.

Rob Bolin has lived in the neighborhood for more than 40 years. He said that lately, there's been a lot of activity on the street.

"They just stop, pull up in the middle of the street, and do their little thing and take off," Bolin said.

Josh McCarthy also lives in the area.

"Hopefully, we can go off of this and rebuild chemistry together and get a neighborhood watch going, something along the lines of that to where we can get together and make this place better than it was before," McCarthy said.

Police have no information on the victim or suspect but said this does not appear to be a random shooting.

CINCINNATI —

Cincinnati police said a man stabbed two people in Westwood on Thanksgiving Day.

Officers shocked him with a taser and shot him in the leg while he was still wielding the knife, according to police.

Investigators said the officers involved are now on administrative leave, which is standard protocol.

Meanwhile, neighbors who saw the chaos are glad it's over.

The FOP president told WLWT that the suspect has since been treated and released from the hospital, but he will be charged.

It was an unnerving way for people to spend the holiday.

"I seen the arguing and all of that took place, but then afterwards, police showed up, all of that came and I'm like, 'Oh my God,'" a neighbor who didn't want to be identified told WLWT.

The neighbor has only lived in Lafeuille Apartment Homes for a few months but said this holiday with her two small children has now been marred by madness next door.

"I mean, even if there is a little bit of family drama, you're not expecting it to end in stabbings. So, yes, it definitely is shocking and crazy. Especially for it to happen in this apartment complex," she said.

She didn't want to be identified to protect her family.

Cincinnati police said a 911 call came in Thursday afternoon, reporting someone in an apartment trying to stab people.

They said two officers responded and found a man and a woman stabbed.

Investigators told WLWT that officers told the suspect to drop a knife and when the suspect wouldn't comply, they fired a gun and deployed a taser.

The specific timeline has not been released by CPD.

"We don't have that set of sequence of events as of yet," Asst. Chief Terri Theetge said.

Police said the suspect was shot in the leg.

He was at UC Medical Center and in stable condition, police said.

Officers said no one has life-threatening injuries.

FOP President Dan Hils released a statement about the incident late Thursday night:

"Today, while most Cincinnati residents safely enjoyed Thanksgiving with family, our local police officers were on patrol, protecting people. One of those officers was called to a local home after a 911 call about a dangerous man with a knife who was cutting people. She and another officer came upon a man wielding a knife. That man refused orders to drop the knife and then approached the officers with the knife. Both officers immediately saw the threat, and both acted quickly. One officer deployed his Taser device while the other simultaneously fired her service weapon. They stopped the threat. The criminal was treated and released from the hospital, and he will be charged. Both officers are uninjured. Everyone in Cincinnati can be thankful that, even on holidays, they have brave, quick-thinking police officers on patrol, risking their own lives to protect others."

It's still not clear what led up to the stabbings, as CPD remains tight-lipped.

Neighbors said they are relieved the incident is over.

"I didn't want them watching that. I was watching it but I was keeping them away from the windows, when the arguing, you know, I didn't want them to hear all of that. It's Thanksgiving, you know," the neighbor said.

No one at the apartment involved answered the door.

There was blood on the ground as well as empty bandage wrappers just outside the door.

Cincinnati police said they believe the victims and the suspect are family members.

They haven't shared the suspect's name, age, or if he has a criminal history.

Police said the Criminal Investigation Section is now investigating and the Hamilton County Prosecutor's Office is involved.

HOUSTON, Texas — Houston's police chief says four police officers have been terminated after an internal investigation determined they did not use reasonable force when they fired their weapons 21 times at a man who had been experiencing a mental health crisis.

The man, 27-year-old Nicolas Chavez, was already injured and on the ground when he was shot and killed by the officers on the night of April 21.

During a news conference Thursday, video footage was presented from body cameras showing Chavez, who had already been shot and was bleeding, kneeling on the ground and grabbing a stun gun when the four officers shot him.

"Let me be clear, it's objectively not reasonable to utilize deadly force when a man's already been shot multiple times, has been tased, has been on the ground, has shown that he really cannot get up," said Police Chief Art Acevedo on Thursday. "I cannot defend that."

At the briefing, Mayor Sylvester Turner said the dismissal of the four officers isn’t an indictment of the police department and its nearly 5,300 others officers.

“But when you are wrong, there are consequences,” he continued. “And for the good of every police officer who serves, for the good of everyone that followed the rules, that protect this city, it is important for us to call a ball a ball, and a strike, a strike."

Turner acknowledged the effect Chavez’s death has had on the city and expressed sympathy for his family.

"What happened the night of April 12 has dramatically affected many people and this city,” said the mayor. “Nicolas Chavez’ life was taken, and his family must live with their personal loss and anguish for the rest of their lives."

Leaders with the Houston Police Officers’ Union denounced the firings, saying the officers tried to de-escalate the situation but were forced to shoot Chavez.

“This unjust and deplorable decision by Chief Acevedo has sent a shock wave through HPD. Even if you deescalate, retreat, follow policy, training and the law...you will still lose your job as a Houston Police Officer,” tweeted Joe Gamaldi, the president of the Houston union.

Harris County District Attorney Kim Ogg said in a statement Thursday that prosecuters will be conducting an independent review of all the evidence in Chavez’s death and once it’s complete, the findings will be presented to a grand jury. They’ll determine whether charges will be brought against the officers involved.

CINCINNATI —

Efforts to protect and care for the most vulnerable during the pandemic expand Monday.

CVS Health will start COVID-19 vaccination efforts at long-term care facilities in 36 more states, as vaccinations have already been underway in Ohio and Kentucky.

At the same time, a man from Hamilton is pushing state lawmakers to allow family members to be essential caregivers in those facilities.

He said it has been an emotional journey he never expected, but one he said many families are faced with right now.

"It was a year this past Christmas that my mother, you know, was able to, to be in my home," Scott Reynolds said.

It was a tough holiday after an emotional year for Reynolds.

He saw his mother, Francene, 75, through the glass at Berkeley Square in Hamilton.

Reynolds said isolation due to COVID-19 restrictions caused his mother to deteriorate in the dementia wing, and that has limited her speech and what she will eat.

He said she recently beat COVID-19, but it has had a lasting impact and hospice care is now by her side.

Reynolds spoke directly to lawmakers in Columbus this month about allowing essential caregivers, such as family members, in long-term care facilities.

"Have you ever had to stand outside watching your mother cry for you and see a total stranger try to hug and console your mother? It was heart-wrenching. This is why House Bill 770 is so important," Reynolds said during a speech at the statehouse.

Reynolds has been granted a few compassionate care visits to see his mother in declining health.

He said she will be getting the COVID-19 vaccine CVS Health is administering in nursing homes.

As those health care workers try to protect residents, Reynolds continues to push for more support.

"It's probably not going to help my situation but I just, you know, I have to look ahead where it could help somebody else's mother," he said.

Reynolds said he will not be finished if House Bill 770 passes.

He said he wants to take on reforming the laws when it comes to elderly care to make those laws better, safer and to make sure everyone is more prepared in case of another pandemic.

Data released from the Labor Department showed the U.S. economy lost 140,000 jobs in the month of December, and it appears women accounted for all of the job losses.

For the month of December, the data show men overall gained 16,000 jobs, while women lost 156,000, for a total loss to the economy for that month of 140,000.

Not just women, minority women. The data shows Black and Hispanic women lost jobs in December, while white women gained. In December, Hispanic women have the highest unemployment rate at 9.1%, followed by Black women at 8.4%, with white women at 5.7%. The data does not break out other racial or ethnic identities in unemployment rates.

Overall, the unemployment rate in this country in December was 6.7%.

For months, analysts and economists have been pointing to the number of women leaving the workforce, for two main reasons. Women, and especially women of color, disproportionately work in some of the hardest-hit areas of the economy like retail, restaurants, education and hospitality.

Second, women have been more likely than men to leave a job to stay home with kids who are remote learning or whose daycare has closed.

"Those sectors are less likely to have flexibility, so when employers are inflexible or women can't come to work because of caregiving responsibilities — they have to exit the workforce," C. Nicole Mason, president and CEO of the Institute for Women's Policy Research, told CNN.

December’s Labor statistics were a blow to the economy, after analysts had expected small gains the report showed a huge drop. This was the first time since April that U.S. employers overall cut jobs.

In April, 22 million jobs were cut, and according to the December jobs report, the economy still has 9.9 million fewer jobs than it did before the pandemic.

Of those 9.9 million jobs that have not returned since February, the Labor Department says roughly 5.4 million were held by women and 4.4 million were held by men.

NEW RICHMOND, Ohio —

Tuesday brought a heartbreaking announcement in the search for a missing Clermont County man.

The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation believes a body found off of State Route 222 on Monday is that of Robert "Bobby" Farrell Jr., 23, from New Richmond.

Along with new details released by officials, there are still many lingering questions.

The search for Farrell started in New Richmond and has expanded into the county.

Even as family members said his best friend has been arrested, the questions of "How?", "Who?" and "Why?" are still unanswered.

Exclusive WLWT video showed a scene in the 2300 block of State Route 222 in Clermont County on Monday night just before 11 p.m.

The road was blocked off by tape.

Clermont County sheriff's deputies and the Clermont County coroner were in sight as evidence and bags were loaded into a truck.

Investigators have not elaborated on everything they found on Monday night.

But as of Tuesday, Ohio BCI officials said they believe they found the remains of Farrell off the roadway, describing him as the victim of a homicide.

His family has been devastated since he disappeared from New Richmond on July 6.

"He went out with his friend and that's all we really know. He went out with his friend and never came home," Farrell's aunt, Sandy Coorey, said.

Family members said Farrell's best friend, Keyanta Gardner, spent days helping them search for the young dad.

On Monday, we uncovered Gardner was arrested in connection to Farrell's disappearance.

Investigators said he admitted to making false and misleading statements to BCI agents.

The tragedy just keeps getting worse for Farrell's family.

"It just hard when you watch someone grow up as a baby, and just, and you don't know what's happening," Coorey said.

Neighbors in New Richmond and along State Route 222 told WLWT that police have asked for surveillance video from July 6.

Clermont County dispatchers said no one called 911 to report the body, so it's unclear how it was found or when it was put there.

Even still, there is a community demanding justice for Farrell.

The Ohio BCI said though Gardner is already charged with tampering with evidence, additional charges are expected.

SPRINGDALE, Ohio —

New video shows what it looked like inside Dave & Buster's in Springdale as a large fight exploded.

Families were startled, and employees warned police that a gun and a Taser were involved.

Police said a man was found shot nearby.

WLWT talked with a man who happened to be in the restaurant and arcade celebrating a birthday as it all unfolded and used his phone to record some of it.

A number of employees called 911 for help begging police to hurry.

"I just can't believe that I witnessed that, that that stuff actually happens," Chandler Davis said.

Davis said he captured video of the fight on Monday night inside Dave & Buster's.

He was there for his girlfriend's sister's 21st birthday celebration, but this was no way to mark that milestone.

"I see a bunch of men throwing fists at each other, so I decided to record it and I didn't want to get too close because there was a girl there with a stun gun and she was going around hitting a bunch of guys in the neck with it," Davis said.

The video he captured showed the intensity of it all.

Five employees called 911 asking police to hurry as the fighting only got worse.

"It's like 10, 15 people and they're fighting. They've got Tasers and everything," an employee said during a 911 call.

In the calls, employees tell 911 dispatchers someone has a gun.

Davis saw their reaction in real time as the fight continued inside and eventually moved outside.

"We were sitting there and one of the workers came running back inside and he didn't say he had a gun but he was like, 'Everybody stay in here' and like, 'Stay down,'" he said.

Springdale police found a 37-year-old man shot nearby.

He is expected to be OK.

Police said no one was arrested, but they are making progress.

Meanwhile, Davis isn't sure he will be back.

"Just don't do it in public, if anything. Just don't do it at all at that. Just, especially not in public around kids, because I was right by a family and they had a little kid and they were really, really freaked out," he said.

Springdale police said they have set up a meeting to talk with Dave & Buster's about security and preventing this from happening again.

They were at this arcade earlier this year for fights and shots were fired near a neighboring business, though no one was hit.

Dave & Buster's has not responded to our request for comment.
