How is the world searching for love ahead of Valentine’s Day

What is love? A lot of people want the answer ahead of Valentine's Day.

It's the top searched question related to the holiday, according to Google Trends.

Valentine's Day isn't just something in American culture. It's celebrated around the world. In fact, searches for Valentine's Day were highest in Nepal and India, according to Google Trends. The U.S. is third on the list, followed by Japan and the U.K.

The National Retail Federation found that the Americans plan to spend an average of $192 on Valentine's Day gifts.

The top gifts include greeting cards, flower and candy. Flowers appear to be the overwhelmingly popular choice across the country, according Google Trends.

Valentine's Day isn't just about having a significant other. The idea of "Galentine's Day" has picked up steam over the past few years. It's celebrated on Feb. 13 among female friends.

Woman sets fire to shed while husband, another woman were inside

PROVO, Utah — A woman in Provo, Utah was arrested on Friday after, according to police, she set fire to a shed while her husband and another woman were inside.

The 60-year-old woman now faces charges of aggravated arson. According to a probable cause affidavit, her husband and an unidentified woman were inside a structure on their property when they reportedly began to smell smoke. Once outside the shed the two say they saw the 60-year-old wife "standing near the ignition point of the fire staring at the fire and the occupants of the shed."

A five-gallon gas can was found near the burning shed with no lid, as KSTU reported.

A police report said the man was "cohabitating" with the other woman in the shed.

The 60-year-old wife originally told police that she saw flames and attempted to warn her husband and the other woman inside, but both of the shed's occupants said she did not offer any warning.

After leaving the scene, the wife was found a few blocks away with a butane torch in her possession, police said. Once the woman was taken into custody, a K-9 unit "gave a positive indication on the shoes and pants" worn by the wife, during an "open air search," according to the police report.

Mother helping daughter find love with billboard

A mother is trying to help her daughter find love.

Beth Davis had a personal ad for her daughter put up on a billboard in Times Square.

“I had that moment of ‘oh my gosh what are people going to think about this,’" Molly Davis said.

While the ad may seem trivial, there is a deeper meaning behind it.

In June 2020, Beth was diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer, which has spread to her bones.

“It’s a tough time in anyone’s life finding out that news. Molly has been my wingman taking me to appointments even this week and now it’s my turn to be her wingman and try to find her love,” Beth said.

While Beth may be getting weaker, she still had enough strength to reach out to the app Wingman, a service where families help their loved ones find love.

The company was so touched by Beth’s story, they turned it into a billboard in New York City.

The billboard will be up until Jan. 25.

Santa’s helpers answer letters from all over the world

A little town nestled in rural Indiana is named after the man in the big red suit, and that’s not by accident. Santa Claus, Indiana, is home to the only Santa Claus post office in America. He gets thousands of letters every year from kids all over the world.

“Santa needs a lot of help because Santa is busy making toys, busy getting ready for the big trip, getting the sleigh ready. The elves are working very hard, so we have to ask for help for Santa to answer all these letters," Mrs. Koch said. “I grew up with Santa Claus in my home.”

Her father found his calling early, as one of Santa's helpers

“And by the way, the beginning of my father being Santa Claus happened when he was 19 years old on the USS New York on Brooklyn navy yard as a young sailor," Mrs. Koch said. “And he said, and these are his words, 'Dear God, if I live through this war, this is what I will do. I will make children happy by being Santa Claus,' and he was.”

For 54 years, he carried out that work in Santa Claus, Indiana.

“I found those letters that my father had answered in the 30s and of course children were asking for underwear, socks and mittens. Now Xbox and computers and sometimes I don’t even know what they are talking about," Mrs. Koch said.

Mrs. Koch is an expert when it comes to the letters written in English, but when she gets letters in other languages, that’s when more of Santa’s helpers step in. Anja is from Switzerland. She read a letter from a girl in Germany who is worried about the pandemic.

"She says, 'I hope all the people will learn to live with COVID next year,'" Anja said.

It’s some of the same things kids in America are writing about.

“One child said, please wear gloves when you get my letter out of the envelope," Mrs. Koch said.

This is an opportunity for these foreign-exchange helpers to see just how similar kids are all over the world.

“It’s so cool to see that it’s all over the world and that we have something in common," Anja said.

“Santa is real. Santa is just so special and so magical and so much beyond what our world is," Mrs. Koch said. “Santa Claus is what’s wonderful. A caring, loving, giving, selfless human being that makes people happy, that sacrifices on that sleigh by going all over the world to make everybody happy, not picking and choosing everybody.”

The letters are far beyond a piece of paper. They are magic, spirit, and a reminder that every child, no matter where they are, is being heard and is loved by Santa.

“Ya know, I always say we should keep the spirit all year. What a wonderful world it would be," Mrs. Koch said.

Finding that special someone can be tough in the best of times. But couples who met each other over the past year have had to balance getting closer emotionally while staying physically apart. Dating during the pandemic has come with novelties at every turn. Megan Farley started dating her boyfriend right before staying at home became the norm. "He's met my mom once, and we've been dating more than a year," Farley said. "It's just kind of strange. We didn't do family holidays and I've been fortunate enough to meet his family too, but every time we do this we have to get tested because his family lives with his grandfather."Instead of spending time out with each other's friends, they've spent more time inside playing games. "I feel like it made us bond a little bit more just because we weren't able to have all those other distractions," Farley said. "It really showed the connection we have."Courtney Quinlan owns Midwest Matchmaking. She said business is not only busy, but dating itself has changed with COVID-19. "People are dating with the intentions of finding a lasting relationship more so than the previous hook-up culture. A lot of people are A, not having resources to just go out to bars anymore because they're not open, or B, they're scared to do that," Quinlan said. Sidney Jacobson got into a relationship shortly before the first case of the virus arrived in Iowa. She said she's kept her circle of contacts small, but now she's planning Summerset Winery's first indoor event for Valentine's Day. "It will be very private, intimate," Jacobson said. "Only 12 groups down in the cellar, and then we made sure that tables are going to be spaced out."
