The family of a Louisville woman says they are still in shock after a shooting over the weekend left the mother and her unborn child dead.Nyota Bawili, 39, was shot and killed around 2 a.m. Jan. 9 at her home."The saying being at the wrong place at the wrong time really lost its meaning because this family was at the right place at the right time, and still," relative Roland Butsitsi said.Her family said Bawili, a mother of seven, was sitting in her living room around 2 a.m. with her husband and her 13-month-old child just feet away when gunfire erupted. Butsitsti translated for Bawili's husband Patrick Pili Pili."All of a sudden they heard a gunshot and then they looked around and his wife was on the ground," Butsitsi said.Much of the shock for the tight-knit Congolese community comes from knowing Bawili came to the United States from her war-torn home country of the Democratic Republic of Congo nearly six years ago for a better life. Butsitsi said Bawili had been in Louisville six months after moving from Florida. Butsitsi explained Bawili's husband is now trying to figure out how to move forward."It really left him with a big scar and big task," Butsitsi said. "He or she took his best friend away and as a widow of seven kids, with the last being a 13-month-old, he doesn't know where to start or where to finish."In the meantime, much of the grief Bawili's husband is feeling is coupled with confusion wondering why his wife and their unborn child's American dream was cut short."He couldn't tell what happened," Butsitsi said. "If it was an accident or if they were targeted but knowing that they have no issue with anybody in this city, there's more questions to be asked than answers to be given."The family is hopeful whoever is responsible will come forward so they can get justice and closure.On Tuesday, the LMPD also confirmed that another woman killed in a shooting this month was also pregnant. Jakia Holt, 36, died at UofL Hospital after she was shot on Jan. 3 near the 4200 block of Northwestern Parkway.Holt was found shot in a car and taken to the hospital.Deadly shooting: Coroner identifies woman who died after being shot in Portland neighborhoodThe shootings involving Holt and Bawili are not related, but the LMPD is hoping their cases will shine some light on the effort to find justice. Nyota Bawili, 39, was shot and killed around 2 a.m. Jan. 9 at her home.

"The saying being at the wrong place at the wrong time really lost its meaning because this family was at the right place at the right time, and still," relative Roland Butsitsi said.

Her family said Bawili, a mother of seven, was sitting in her living room around 2 a.m. with her husband and her 13-month-old child just feet away when gunfire erupted. Butsitsti translated for Bawili's husband Patrick Pili Pili.

"All of a sudden they heard a gunshot and then they looked around and his wife was on the ground," Butsitsi said.

Much of the shock for the tight-knit Congolese community comes from knowing Bawili came to the United States from her war-torn home country of the Democratic Republic of Congo nearly six years ago for a better life. Butsitsi said Bawili had been in Louisville six months after moving from Florida.

Butsitsi explained Bawili's husband is now trying to figure out how to move forward.

"It really left him with a big scar and big task," Butsitsi said. "He or she took his best friend away and as a widow of seven kids, with the last being a 13-month-old, he doesn't know where to start or where to finish."

In the meantime, much of the grief Bawili's husband is feeling is coupled with confusion wondering why his wife and their unborn child's American dream was cut short.

"He couldn't tell what happened," Butsitsi said. "If it was an accident or if they were targeted but knowing that they have no issue with anybody in this city, there's more questions to be asked than answers to be given."

The family is hopeful whoever is responsible will come forward so they can get justice and closure.

On Tuesday, the LMPD also confirmed that another woman killed in a shooting this month was also pregnant. Jakia Holt, 36, died at UofL Hospital after she was shot on Jan. 3 near the 4200 block of Northwestern Parkway.

Holt was found shot in a car and taken to the hospital.

The shootings involving Holt and Bawili are not related, but the LMPD is hoping their cases will shine some light on the effort to find justice. Officials confirmed that because the women were pregnant, each incident will count as two homicides, meaning there were a total of four victims.

No arrests have been made and detectives have not released details about the shooter(s).

After money was collected during the offering, he grabbed the collection plate and ran down the side aisle with a pistol. He tried to fire the weapon but was tackled by several parishioners.Police said as he was being disarmed, he bit several of them.Brown says while he doesn't know this teenager, he knows many other young people in this neighborhood who stop by his store for a snack or soda."We treat everybody with respect around here. Kids, adults, children; It really doesn't make a difference," Brown said.He says his calling is helping the younger generation. His reasoning is simple — he lost several of his own family members to gun violence."I feel like I'm responsible for trying to make a difference because the cousins that I lost were like sons and I feel like I failed them. LOUISVILLE, Ky. —

It might just be the best Christmas present ever for one Kentucky woman. An extremely generous gift from an anonymous donor is making her life a lot easier.

"It took my breath away. It touched my heart that they had did this for me. So, I thank them for everything they have done for me and my grandkids," said Regina Russell, the recipient of a car from an anonymous donor.

The gift of transportation is something Regina Russell has needed for a long time.

"The car that I had, it was a 2003. I had it ever since, and it just broke down. So, I was getting on the bus," Russell said.

The 61-year-old is raising two of her grandkids. She took her 16-year-old and 9-year-old granddaughters in when their mother was having a rough time. Their father is incarcerated. Despite no transportation, she's managed to get them to and from doctors and dental appointments, grocery shopping and other places all through a pandemic.

It may not be long before the people serving you alcohol at your favorite restaurant get a little younger. A pre-filed bill making its way to the Kentucky senate floor would lower the age for servers from 20-and-a-day to 18-years-old.It comes as restaurants all over the state are working to get back to their pre-pandemic staff numbers. Drake's in St. Matthew's is no exception.Managing partner Bob Cameron said he’s been busy putting up hiring signs inside and outside of the restaurant. As of late, he's been successful at getting applicants, averaging 20-30 a week, but there's just one problem."It’s all coming down to the age of the applicant," Cameron said.Being a venue that serves alcohol, he said they get a lot of people asking for beer and mixed drinks. However, there are limited people who can serve them due to age."If you're not 20-and-a-day, I've got still positions available, but it gets to a point where we are starting to fill those positions," Cameron said. "We still have huge vacancies in certain departments that we really need to fill."He's not alone. Venues all over the state are trying to combat the current age requirement, so much so that state lawmakers are deciding to step in.On Thursday, Republican State Rep. Richard White addressed the state's Interim Joint Committee on Licensing, Occupations, and Administrative Regulations with a solution."I think we should lower the age to serve alcohol to 18-years-old," White said.A solution that would help out people like Cameron, but also one that the district manager for Agave & Rye in Louisville, Jason Fryman said, would help out those who get hired."I started serving when I was 16, but it was in a place that didn't serve alcohol," Fryman said. "It made a huge difference when I was able to serve alcohol, the amount of money I was making."Fryman said he's in favor of the move. In his opinion, there's not much of a difference between someone who is 18 or 19-years-old, and someone who is 20-and-a-day-years-old."I think as long as you're 18 you're an adult," Fryman said. "As long as proper training is put into a place, you can do it."A statement some state lawmakers agreed with during the Thursday meeting."We're talking about someone who is 18, who is eligible for the draft, can go into service, and is legally an adult," Republican Sen. John Schickel said. "It's not like they would be behind the bar alone at 1:30 a.m. They would be under the supervision of someone who is 21-years-old serving tables."The bill if passed would also allow cashiers at stores who serve boxed alcohol to be as young as 18-years-old.

It comes as restaurants all over the state are working to get back to their pre-pandemic staff numbers. Drake's in St. Matthew's is no exception.

Managing partner Bob Cameron said he’s been busy putting up hiring signs inside and outside of the restaurant. As of late, he's been successful at getting applicants, averaging 20-30 a week, but there's just one problem.

"It’s all coming down to the age of the applicant," Cameron said.

Being a venue that serves alcohol, he said they get a lot of people asking for beer and mixed drinks. However, there are limited people who can serve them due to age.

"If you're not 20-and-a-day, I've got still positions available, but it gets to a point where we are starting to fill those positions," Cameron said. "We still have huge vacancies in certain departments that we really need to fill."

He's not alone. Venues all over the state are trying to combat the current age requirement, so much so that state lawmakers are deciding to step in.

On Thursday, Republican State Rep. Richard White addressed the state's Interim Joint Committee on Licensing, Occupations, and Administrative Regulations with a solution.

"I think we should lower the age to serve alcohol to 18-years-old," White said.

A solution that would help out people like Cameron, but also one that the district manager for Agave & Rye in Louisville, Jason Fryman said, would help out those who get hired.

"I started serving when I was 16, but it was in a place that didn't serve alcohol," Fryman said. "It made a huge difference when I was able to serve alcohol, the amount of money I was making."

Fryman said he's in favor of the move. In his opinion, there's not much of a difference between someone who is 18 or 19-years-old, and someone who is 20-and-a-day-years-old.

"I think as long as you're 18 you're an adult," Fryman said. "As long as proper training is put into a place, you can do it."

A statement some state lawmakers agreed with during the Thursday meeting.

"We're talking about someone who is 18, who is eligible for the draft, can go into service, and is legally an adult," Republican Sen. John Schickel said. "It's not like they would be behind the bar alone at 1:30 a.m. They would be under the supervision of someone who is 21-years-old serving tables."

The bill if passed would also allow cashiers at stores who serve boxed alcohol to be as young as 18-years-old.

Andy Beshear wants to do his part to incentivize those who work for him to get their COVID-19 shots, an effort geared at encouraging other state offices and employers to do the same across Kentucky.The governor announced Thursday, during his latest COVID-19 briefing, that he will give all executive branch employees an extra vacation day for getting vaccinated.Beshear said the incentive comes after the state first allowed workers time during their shifts to go get vaccinated when the shots began rolling out in January. The state also gave workers time off for recuperation.Now, the governor said he wants to reward those in his office for getting their shots. He said the one extra vacation day applies to all active, permanent, full-time and part-time executive branch employees upon submission of vaccination proof.Beshear said the incentive also applies to all those already vaccinated."This is an incentive so that you can spend more time with your family doing what you want to do for doing the right thing," Beshear said.The governor said he's also encouraging other constitutional offices that would like to participate. The announcement was made Tuesday morning at the Kentucky Expo Center with both Gov. As Louisville, and the country, mark one year since officers came inside Breonna Taylor’s home and fatally shot her, a federal investigation of the shooting is casting a wider net than previous investigations and looking into the warrant that allowed officers entrance.

In the early morning hours of March 13, 2020, officers serving a search warrant went inside Taylor’s home. Taylor’s boyfriend, believing the home was being invaded by criminals, opened fire, hitting an officer in the leg. Three police officers fired their weapons. Taylor was hit five times, and died.

Taylor was 26 years old and worked as an emergency room technician.

It was ruled that two officers fired shots that hit Taylor, Myles Cosgrove and Jonathan Mattingly, and a third officer, Brett Hankison, fired shots from outside through the windows. Mattingly was hit by Taylor's boyfriend's shot.

A grand jury formed last year by state Attorney General Daniel Cameron recommended only one officer, Hankison, be charged in connection with the shooting, the charge is for endangering Taylor’s neighbors not for her death.

The warrant that allowed officers to enter was not part of Cameron’s criminal investigation. The warrant was part of a drug investigation into Taylor’s ex-boyfriend, and there is discrepancy in whether it was a so-called “no-knock” warrant, which allows officers to enter without knocking or identifying themselves.

That warrant, and how it was obtained, are under review by federal investigators who are conducting their own investigation into what happened.

There are signs the federal investigation could look into the Louisville police response to demonstrations after Taylor’s shooting, according to the Associated Press. They could also examine police training and question officers about their mindset and thought process the night of the shooting.

In addition to the grand jury investigation, in the last year since the shooting, Louisville, and many other cities around the country, have banned “no-knock” warrants, Louisville’s Police Department has a new chief, and the city has paid a $12 million settlement to Taylor’s mother.

Two of the officers who fired shots in Taylor’s home have been dismissed by the department, Cosgrove and Hankison, along with a detective who had sought the warrant. Mattingly is still with the department.

Taylor’s boyfriend who fired at officers was originally facing charges for that shooting, but they were all dropped just this month.
