Following recent severe weather and storms, homeowners in Greater Cincinnati are looking to install lightning rods to ensure their homes stay safe from lightning strikes.Lightning rods intercept strikes, guiding the electrical energy into the ground rather than on the structure itself. It prevents fires from sparking and thousands of dollars in damage.Stephanie and Bob Stark were all set to move into their new home in Mason before a lightning bolt sparked a fire. First responders rushed to the scene."We were very lucky that a neighbor heard and saw and called 911 almost immediately," Stephanie Stark said. The couple now plans on installing lightning rods for their safety.Tony Riley owns Ohio Valley Lightning Protection. He said he's getting tons of calls about lightning rod and surge protection following the recent storms."What the lightning rod system does is protect the structure, and then we suggest everybody do surge protection, whether you can afford a lightning rod system or not, everybody should have surge protection on their electrical panels," Riley said.About 5 to 10 points are usually placed per home.According to the Ohio Valley Lightning Protection website, a properly installed lightning protection system is over 99 percent effective in preventing lightning damage. The cost is usually between $2,000 and $4,000.
