<p>
The Las Vegas Raiders have hired Sandra Douglass Morgan as team president, making her the first Black woman in that position for an NFL team.In a news conference at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas announcing the hiring, Morgan was asked what it meant for her to make league history."I have been the first in other positions that I've held whether it be city attorney or Gaming Control board," Morgan said. "I definitely never want to be the last and I want to get to the point obviously where there is no more firsts...I would tip my hat to all of the ... prior women that were leaders and visionaries, if I could be an inspiration or help or open doors for any other women or girl out there then that's an incredible accomplishment for me."The importance and effect of it is not lost on me. I know that sports is a male-dominated industry, just as gaming was, and we need to continue to break down these barriers."Raiders owner Mark Davis touted her experience, integrity and passion for the Las Vegas community."From the moment I met Sandra, I knew she was a force to be reckoned with," he said in a news release. "We are extremely lucky to have her at the helm."CNN has reached out to the NFL for comment. The Las Vegas Review-Journal obtained a letter to people in the organization that announced the hire."I am thrilled to join you as we embark on one of the most exciting times in the history of our organization," the Review-Journal quoted Morgan as saying in the letter. "I look forward to meeting each of you in person over the coming weeks."In May, Davis fired then-team president Dan Ventrelle and did not provide a reason for his termination. However, in a statement sent via text message to the Review-Journal, Ventrelle said he was fired as retaliation for informing the league of alleged complaints claiming Davis created a hostile work environment as well as other potential misconduct, which he says Davis dismissed. When asked at the time by the Review-Journal about Ventrelle's allegations, Davis said he was aware of them and wouldn't comment. The NFL said it would review the allegations.Within the past year, Raiders head coach Jon Gruden resigned after reports emerged of him using homophobic, racist and misogynistic language in emails while he worked as an ESPN analyst. He apologized, saying he "never meant to hurt anyone."Morgan addressed organizational issues in her letter, the Las Vegas newspaper reported."Let me be clear -- I am not here to avoid or sidestep problems or concerns that need to be addressed," the Review-Journal quoted her as writing. "I've given long and thoughtful consideration to joining you, and I've done so because I believe in the promise of the Raiders. Most importantly, I believe in your core values of integrity, community, and commitment to excellence. I will expect you to embody those and to hold me accountable to doing the same."Historical firsts are not new for the Raiders. The Raiders became the first team in the modern NFL to hire a Black head coach when they hired Art Shell in 1989. In 1997, with the hiring of Amy Trask, they became the first team to hire a woman as chief executive.Jason Wright, hired in 2020 by the Washington Commanders, was the NFL's first Black team president. Earlier this year, the Baltimore Ravens hired Sashi Brown as their president.Morgan is a former Nevada Gaming Control Board chairwoman, appointed in 2019. She was the first Black woman to hold that role as well.

<p>CLEVELAND — The NFL has postponed three games scheduled for this weekend due to COVID-19 outbreaks.</p>
<p>The Browns and Raiders, originally scheduled to play in a nationally televised game on Saturday, will now play Monday evening at 5 p.m. ET in Cleveland. Two other games originally scheduled for Sunday — Seahawks-Rams and Washington-Eagles — will now be played Tuesday evening at 7 p.m.</p>
<p>The Browns, Rams and Washington Football Team are all experiencing major outbreaks of COVID-19. All three clubs have at least 20 players on their COVID-19 reserve lists.</p>
<p>The NFL made it clear that postponing games would not be something they'd like to do. The 2021 season marks the league's first with a 17 game regular season, so the league said it did not anticipate adding another week to the schedule to play postponed games.</p>
<p>But postponements, while not a "right" for clubs, can happen this season, and the league made the call to do so Friday.</p>
<p>NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said this summer that while unlikely, postponements can occur if "required by government authorities, medical experts, or at the Commissioner's discretion."</p>
<p>This story is breaking and will be updated.</p>

<p>The team announced Tuesday that it is removing the former Buccaneers head coach from its Ring of Honor, one day after his resignation as Las Vegas Raiders head coach.</p>
<p>"The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have advocated for purposeful change in the areas of race relations, gender equality, diversity and inclusion for many years," a team statement read. "While we acknowledge Jon Gruden's contributions on the field, his actions go against our core values as an organization. Therefore, he will no longer continue to be a member of the Buccaneers Ring of Honor."</p>

Jon Gruden has resigned as coach of the Las Vegas Raiders after emails he sent before being hired in 2018 contained racist, homophobic and misogynistic comments.Gruden released a statement Monday night, saying: "I have resigned as head coach of the Las Vegas Raiders. I love the Raiders and do not want to be a distraction. Thank you to all the players, coaches, staff, and fans of Raider Nation. I'm sorry, I never meant to hurt anyone."He stepped down after The New York Times reported that Gruden frequently used misogynistic and homophobic language directed at Commissioner Roger Goodell and others in the NFL.The NFL Network first reported the development. It was a rapid downfall for Gruden, who is in the fourth year of a 10-year, $100 million contract he signed with the Raiders in 2018. It started on Friday when the Wall Street Journal reported that Gruden used a racist term to describe NFL union chief DeMaurice Smith in a 2011 email to former Washington executive Bruce Allen. The emails were discovered in a workplace misconduct investigation into the Washington Football Team but ended up costing Gruden his job when they also showed Gruden denounced the drafting of a gay player and the tolerance of players protesting during the playing of the national anthem among other issues.Gruden apologized for his "insensitive remarks" about Smith, saying they were made out of frustration over the 2011 lockout. But the latest emails sent from between 2011-18 when Gruden was an analyst for ESPN show his use of derogatory language went well beyond that.A league source confirms the accuracy of the emails and said they were sent to the Raiders last week. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the league hasn't made the emails public. Raiders owner Mark Davis said last week that the email about Smith was "disturbing and not what the Raiders stand for" and said the team was reviewing the additional emails. The Times reported that Gruden used a gay slur to insult Goodell and said he was "clueless" and "anti-football." He also said Goodell shouldn't have pressured the Rams to draft "queers," a reference to Michael Sam, who was the first openly gay player drafted by an NFL team.Raiders defensive end Carl Nassib came out as gay in June and is the first openly gay player to appear in an NFL game.In a 2017 email, the Times said Gruden responded to a sexist meme of a female official by saying: "Nice job roger." The paper also said Gruden criticized Goodell and the NFL league for trying to reduce concussions, and said that Eric Reid, a player who had demonstrated during the playing of the national anthem, should be fired. The newspaper said Gruden also mocked an article in 2017 about players calling on Goodell to support their efforts promoting racial equality and criminal justice reform. "He needs to hide in his concussion protocol tent," Gruden wrote.Gruden and Allen have a long relationship, having worked together in Oakland and Tampa Bay. The emails between the two and other men included photos of women wearing only bikini bottoms, including one photo of two Washington team cheerleaders.Gruden also criticized President Barack Obama during his re-election campaign in 2012, and then-vice president Joe Biden.Smith said earlier Monday that he appreciates that Gruden reached out to him following the initial report, but that the email is evidence that the fight against racism is ongoing."But make no mistake, the news is not about what is said in our private conversation, but what else is said by people who never thought they would be exposed and how they are going to be held to account," Smith wrote in a Twitter thread.Gruden's comments to Allen about Smith came during the 2011 lockout of the players by the NFL. Gruden told the Wall Street Journal he was angry about the lockout during labor negotiations and he didn't trust the direction the union was taking. Davis had been trying to hire Gruden almost since he took charge following the death of his father, Al, in 2011. He finally got his prize in 2018 when Gruden agreed to leave ESPN and return to the sideline with a 10-year contract. Gruden had revived the Raiders in is first stint in 1998-2001 and then beat them in the Super Bowl the following season after he was traded to Tampa Bay for a boatload of draft picks.Gruden has a 117-112 career record but hasn't won a playoff game since the Super Bowl victory over the Raiders in the 2002 season. His second tenure with the team started with a pep rally introductory news conference but provided few reasons for celebration as Gruden had a 22-31 record, failing to reach a winning record or make the playoffs. He traded away stars Khalil Mack and Amari Cooper in his first season to start a rebuild, which has showed only minor progress. After the Raiders went 4-12 in his first season, Gruden tried to make a push in 2019 in the team's final season in Oakland by spending heavily in free agency and trading for star receiver Antonio Brown. But Brown was cut before the season after a series of run-ins with management, and the Raiders went 7-9.They improved to 8-8 last season and got off to a promising 3-0 start this year before losing the past two games. There is no immediate word on who will take over as interim coach. The Raiders have three former NFL head coaches on staff: defensive coordinator Gus Bradley, defensive line coach Rod Marinelli, and offensive line coach Tom Cable, who was the team's head coach from 2008-2010, going 17-27. Special teams coordinator Rich Bisaccia is the assistant head coach.___AP Pro Football Writer Barry Wilner contributed to this report.

Carl Nassib, a defensive lineman with the Las Vegas Raiders, became the first active NFL player in league history to announce that he is gay."What's up, people," Nassib said Monday in a video on Instagram. "I'm Carl Nassib. I'm at my house here in West Chester, Pennsylvania. I just wanted to take a quick moment to say that I'm gay. I've been meaning to do this for a while now, but I finally feel comfortable enough to get it off my chest."Nassib, 28, has played five years with three teams and is entering his second season with the Raiders. He said in a statement accompanying the video that he had agonized over the decision to announce he was gay for 15 years.Nassib added that he was a private person and wasn't seeking publicity."I just think that representation and visibility are so important," he said. "I actually hope that one day videos like this and the whole coming out process are just not necessary. But until then, I'm going to do my best and do my part to cultivate a culture that's accepting, that's compassionate."NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell lauded the announcement."The NFL family is proud of Carl for courageously sharing his truth today," Goodell said. "Representation matters. We share his hope that someday soon statements like his will no longer be newsworthy as we march toward full equality for the LGBTQ+ community. We wish Carl the best of luck this coming season."The defensive end was drafted out of Penn State by the Cleveland Browns in the third round of the 2016 NFL draft. He played for the Browns from 2016-2017, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2018 and 2019 and was signed by the Raiders as an unrestricted free agent on March 23, 2020.Nassib said he was donating $100,000 to The Trevor Project, a suicide prevention and crisis intervention organization for LGBTQ youth. He wrote in his statement that it saddened him that LGBTQ youth are at an elevated risk for suicide.Amit Paley, CEO and executive director of The Trevor Project, said the donation will help scale up crisis services."The Trevor Project is grateful to Carl Nassib for living his truth and supporting LGBTQ youth," Paley said in a statement emailed to CNN. "Coming out is an intensely personal decision, and it can be an incredibly scary and difficult one to make. We hope that Carl's historic representation in the NFL will inspire young LGBTQ athletes across the country to live their truth and pursue their dreams."At a time when state lawmakers are actively trying to restrict transgender and nonbinary youth's participation in school sports, this news should serve as a clarion call for greater LGBTQ inclusion in the locker room and on the field."Nassib's decision can have profound impact, LGBTQ organization saysJason Collins, who became the first openly gay NBA player when he suited up for the Brooklyn Nets in 2014, was cheering Nassib on social media."Very proud of Carl Nassib! Incredibly happy for him and can't wait to watch him play this upcoming season!," he tweeted.Tennis legend Billie Jean King tweeted her support."The ability to live an authentic life is so important," she wrote.GLAAD President and CEO Sarah Kate Ellis said Nassib's announcement was "a strong message.""Carl Nassib's powerful coming out is a historic reflection of the growing state of LGBTQ visibility and inclusion in the world of professional sports, which has been driven by a long list of brave LGBTQ athletes who came before him," said Ellis in a statement."As an accomplished athlete who is now the first out gay active player in the NFL, Carl Nassib's story will not only have a profound impact on the future of LGBTQ visibility and acceptance in sports, but sends a strong message to so many LGBTQ people, especially youth, that they too can one day grow up to be and succeed as a professional athlete like him," the statement said.Penn State Head Coach James Franklin said his former player had a huge heart."I am very proud of Carl for his courage and voice. This announcement doesn't surprise me because if you know Carl, you know his strength. Carl's story continues to add chapters which will have an impact well beyond the field of play," he said in a statement. "His care and love for those around him, particularly those in need, has always been obvious. ... Carl's brave announcement will forge a path for others to be true to their authentic self."The Raiders also tweeted they were proud of Nassib.Pro Football Hall of Famer Warren Moon added to the chorus of people proud of him, and the former NFL and CFL quarterback added that he played with some guys who were gay but didn't feel comfortable coming out."As long as they helped us win and were great teammates- their sexual preference was never a issue," he wrote on Twitter."We live in a different time now where diversity is much more accepted. Cheers Carl, and I hope this lets other athletes know, its OK to say who you are."Nassib says players' support helped him In his Instagram statement, Nassib thanked family and friends. He also thanked the league, his coaches and other players."I would not have been able to do this without them," he wrote. "From the jump, I was greeted with the utmost respect and acceptance."Nassib wrote that he was standing on the shoulders of people who paved the way."I do not know all the history behind our courageous LGBTQ community," he said, "but I am eager to learn and to help continue the fight for equality and acceptance."Michael Sam came out before 2014 draftIn 2014, Michael Sam became the first openly gay player to be selected in the NFL draft when the St. Louis Rams chose him in the seventh round as the 249th overall pick. The Rams cut Sam just before the season started.Sam signed with the Dallas Cowboys practice squad but never was on the active roster. He was cut after six weeks. In 2015, he appeared in one game with the Montreal Alouettes of the Canadian Football League before leaving the team.Other NFL players have come out after they retired, including former Dallas Cowboys linebacker Jeff Rohrer, who married Joshua Ross in 2018.

<p>"What's up, people," Nassib said Monday in <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/CQZXu_8nyy_/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">a video on Instagram</a>. "I'm Carl Nassib. I'm at my house here in West Chester, Pennsylvania. I just wanted to take a quick moment to say that I'm gay. I've been meaning to do this for a while now, but I finally feel comfortable enough to get it off my chest."</p>
<p>Nassib, 28, has played five years with three teams and is entering his second season with the Raiders. He said in a statement accompanying the video that he had agonized over the decision to announce he was gay for 15 years.</p>
<p>Nassib added that he was a private person and wasn't seeking publicity.</p>
<p>"I just think that representation and visibility are so important," he said. "I actually hope that one day videos like this and the whole coming out process are just not necessary. But until then, I'm going to do my best and do my part to cultivate a culture that's accepting, that's compassionate."</p>
<p>NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell lauded the announcement.</p>
<p>"The NFL family is proud of Carl for courageously sharing his truth today," Goodell said. "Representation matters. We share his hope that someday soon statements like his will no longer be newsworthy as we march toward full equality for the LGBTQ+ community. We wish Carl the best of luck this coming season."</p>
<p>The defensive end was drafted out of Penn State by the Cleveland Browns in the third round of the 2016 NFL draft. He played for the Browns from 2016-2017, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2018 and 2019 and was signed by the Raiders as an unrestricted free agent on March 23, 2020.</p>
<p>Nassib said he was donating $100,000 to <a href="https://www.thetrevorproject.org/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">The Trevor Project</a>, a suicide prevention and crisis intervention organization for LGBTQ youth. He wrote in his statement that it saddened him that LGBTQ youth are at an elevated risk for suicide.</p>

<p>Amit Paley, CEO and executive director of The Trevor Project, said the donation will help scale up crisis services.</p>
<p>"The Trevor Project is grateful to Carl Nassib for living his truth and supporting LGBTQ youth," Paley said in a statement emailed to CNN. "Coming out is an intensely personal decision, and it can be an incredibly scary and difficult one to make. We hope that Carl's historic representation in the NFL will inspire young LGBTQ athletes across the country to live their truth and pursue their dreams.</p>
<p>"At a time when state lawmakers are actively trying to restrict transgender and nonbinary youth's participation in school sports, this news should serve as a clarion call for greater LGBTQ inclusion in the locker room and on the field."</p>
<h3 class="body-h3">Nassib's decision can have profound impact, LGBTQ organization says</h3>
<p>Jason Collins, who became the <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2014/02/23/us/jason-collins/index.html" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">first openly gay NBA player</a> when he suited up for the Brooklyn Nets in 2014, was cheering Nassib on social media.</p>
<p>"Very proud of Carl Nassib! Incredibly happy for him and can't wait to watch him play this upcoming season!," <a href="https://twitter.com/jasoncollins98/status/1407111047950090242" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">he tweeted</a>.</p>
<p>Tennis legend Billie Jean King tweeted her support.</p>
<p>"The ability to live an authentic life is so important," she wrote.</p>
<p>GLAAD President and CEO Sarah Kate Ellis said Nassib's announcement was "a strong message."</p>
<p>"Carl Nassib's powerful coming out is a historic reflection of the growing state of LGBTQ visibility and inclusion in the world of professional sports, which has been driven by a long list of brave LGBTQ athletes who came before him," said Ellis in a statement.</p>
<p>"As an accomplished athlete who is now the first out gay active player in the NFL, Carl Nassib's story will not only have a profound impact on the future of LGBTQ visibility and acceptance in sports, but sends a strong message to so many LGBTQ people, especially youth, that they too can one day grow up to be and succeed as a professional athlete like him," the statement said.</p>
<p>Penn State Head Coach James Franklin said his former player had a huge heart.</p>
<p>"I am very proud of Carl for his courage and voice. This announcement doesn't surprise me because if you know Carl, you know his strength. Carl's story continues to add chapters which will have an impact well beyond the field of play," he said in a statement. "His care and love for those around him, particularly those in need, has always been obvious. ... Carl's brave announcement will forge a path for others to be true to their authentic self."</p>
<p>The Raiders also tweeted they were proud of Nassib.</p>
<p>Pro Football Hall of Famer Warren Moon added to the chorus of people proud of him, and the former NFL and CFL quarterback added that he played with some guys who were gay but didn't feel comfortable coming out.</p>
<p>"As long as they helped us win and were great teammates- their sexual preference was never a issue," he wrote on Twitter.</p>
<p>"We live in a different time now where diversity is much more accepted. Cheers Carl, and I hope this lets other athletes know, its OK to say who you are."</p>
<h3 class="body-h3">Nassib says players' support helped him </h3>
<p>In his Instagram statement, Nassib thanked family and friends. He also thanked the league, his coaches and other players.</p>
<p>"I would not have been able to do this without them," he wrote. "From the jump, I was greeted with the utmost respect and acceptance."</p>
<p>Nassib wrote that he was standing on the shoulders of people who paved the way.</p>
<p>"I do not know all the history behind our courageous LGBTQ community," he said, "but I am eager to learn and to help continue the fight for equality and acceptance."</p>
<h3 class="body-h3">Michael Sam came out before 2014 draft</h3>
<p>In 2014, Michael Sam became the first openly gay player to be selected in the NFL draft when the St. Louis Rams chose him in the seventh round as the 249th overall pick. The Rams cut Sam just before the season started.</p>
<p>Sam signed with the Dallas Cowboys practice squad but never was on the active roster. He was cut after six weeks.</p>
<p>In 2015, he appeared in one game with the Montreal Alouettes of the Canadian Football League before leaving the team.</p>
<p>Other NFL players have come out after they retired, including former Dallas Cowboys linebacker Jeff Rohrer, who <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2018/11/15/sport/former-dallas-cowboys-linebacker-jeff-rohrer-marrying-gay-partner/index.html" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">married Joshua Ross</a> in 2018.</p>

<p>LAS VEGAS (KTNV) -- A defensive end with the Las Vegas Raiders is the first active NFL player to announce that he is gay.</p>
<p>28-year-old Carl Nassib made the announcement on Instagram on Monday.</p>
<p>In his video, Nassib says, “I just want to take a quick moment to say that I’m gay. I’ve been meaning to do this for a while now, but finally feel comfortable getting it off my chest. I really have the best life, the best family, friends and job a guy can ask for.”</p>
<p>Nassib, who was the third-round pick in the 2016 NFL Draft and is headed into his sixth pro season, also said that he is a pretty private person and he is not doing it for attention. He said representation is important.</p>
<p>Additionally, Nassib said that he is going to do his best to cultivate a culture that’s accepting and compassionate and he is going to start by donating $100,000 to The Trevor Project.</p>
<p>The Trevor Project was founded in 1998 by the creators of the Academy Award-winning short film “Trevor.”</p>
<p>The Trevor Project is a national organization that provides crisis intervention and suicide prevention services to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and questioning young people under the age of 25.</p>
