The League to Save Lake Tahoe has been leading litter clean-up efforts for the area's beaches and water for years. Volunteers can easily pick up large pieces of trash, but smaller pieces of plastic can eventually still find their way into the water after sinking into the sand. That's a problem the league is looking to solve with help from a new robot. It's called "BEBOT."It's fully electric, solar-powered and remote-controlled by someone walking behind it. BEBOT's job? Comb through the top few inches of sand to sift out otherwise unseen litter.“This robot is really getting the plastics and the litter just out of our view that could end up in our lake and really cause some damage," said Jesse Patterson, Chief Strategy Officer for the League, which operates under the slogan "Keep Tahoe Blue."Patterson said the robot has been compared to a giant Roomba or a Zamboni. But the rover-like machine is far smaller than that."It's very compact, no emissions, very light pressure on the ground so it's not going to disturb things like our native Tahoe Yellow Cress," Patterson said. A company called Eco Clean Solutions, which is based in France, built BEBOT along with several other robots like it. BEBOT made its U.S. debut in Florida. This week's test event at Lake Tahoe was the first run for the robot on the West Coast. In ideal conditions, the robot can crawl along at 3,000 meters (just under 2 miles) per hour. As it moves along, it sweeps and sifts the top 1 to 4 inches of sand, removing pieces of trash. "We really see the robot as the last line of defense for the lake for keeping small pollution and litter, plastics in particular from getting in the water in the first place," Patterson said. After that, volunteers sort the trash and log what they've found. BEBOT is in a pilot phase this year while the League determines the most effective way to utilize it. Patterson said that Keep Tahoe Blue will still organize regular clean-up events. He also urges all visitors to prioritize being responsible stewards of the environment."Leave it better than you found it," Patterson said. "Come enjoy this place, but pack it in, pack it out. It sounds silly and simple but it really matters here in Tahoe."

A little bit of good news and a lot of luck coming out of a destructive wildfire burning near the California-Oregon border as a photojournalist saved a puppy wandering around the ruins of the McKinney Fire.Jonathan Rivas said he arrived at the community of Klamath River early Saturday morning, just hours after the wildfire broke out where he said there was a lot of damage, with trees and homes burned. Rivas said he was finishing filming one neighborhood when he heard yelping. "I heard a yelp in the distance, but I didn't really know what it was, I thought it was an injured deer or one of the wildlife that's there," the AIO Filmz photojournalist said. "All of a sudden, this little puppy comes and runs up to me. I was super shocked to see that come from the rubble there."The puppy was clearly excited to see Rivas in the video.Watch the full rescue below The puppy allowed Rivas to pick him up and put him in the back of his car. "He was very excited, he was wagging his tail, I am talking to him like I'm talking to my dog, I picked him up, put him in the trunk of my car," Rivas said.He gave him some water before dropping him off at a shelter. Rivas posted the video on social media, where he found the puppy's family. The puppy has been reunited with its family. "Reuniting it with their family and after hearing their story, it makes me feel good, I am just happy, I was at the right place at the right time," Rivas said.

A pilot has died during a single-jet crash at the Reno National Championship Air Races in Nevada on Sunday, according to officials. (Video above may be difficult for some people to watch.) The crash happened during the Jet Gold Race, according to the Reno Air Racing Association. Video shows the plane crash and immediately sparking a fire. The race was being livestreamed on the racing association's YouTube but has since been taken down. It was on lap three of six on outer pylon five, said Fred Telling, the CEO and president of the Reno Air Racing Association. The pilot who died was the only one on board when the plane crashed. It's unclear who the pilot was.All other pilots landed safely, Telling said. The races have been suspended due to the crash. The Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board are investigating.History of plane crashes at the racesIn 2011, 11 people died and another 70 people were seriously injured when a plane crashed into the grandstand at the Reno-Stead Airport at the 49th annual Reno National Championship Air Races. The National Transportation Safety Board report said the plane was pushed beyond its structural limits. Changes were then made to the races a year later for safety. In 2014, a wing malfunctioned before an experimental aircraft crashed and killed a retired Air Force pilot from San Jose. The pilot, Lee Behel, 64, died in the crash. No one else was injured. The races draw thousands of spectators every year to see the high-performance and experimental planes fly wingtip-to-wingtip as low as 50 feet off the ground. This is a developing story.

US. REALLY, MICHELLE. WELL, YEAH, WITH THIS HIGHER INTEREST RATE, JUST LOOK FOR THINGS TO GET MORE EXPENSIVE. LIKE IF YOU NEED TO BUY A NEW CAR. FINANCIAL EXPERTS SAY WITH A LOAN RATES GOING UP, IT’S ALL IN AN EFFORT TO BRING INFLATION DOWN. NEW CARS ARE BACK ON THE LOT OF SACRAMENTO DEALERSHIPS AND THAT MEANS SO ARE BUYERS. WE NEED A BIGGER CAR. OUR FAMILY’S GROWING AND WE NEED TO MOVE UP FROM A CAR TO SUV. BUT TWO YEAR OLD ELIJAH, FIVE MONTH OLD SANDRA AND ANOTHER BABY ON THE WAY. THE TIMING FOR A NEW SUV IS NOT THE BEST FOR A GET A FAMILY. THERE’S NOT MUCH WE CAN DO ABOUT INTEREST RATES. I MEAN, IT’S BASICALLY WE WERE IN NEED OF A CAR. SO IT’S LIKE WE HAVE TO BUY IT REGARDLESS OF THE POINT. 75 JUMP, IT’S JUST GOING TO BE HARDER. IT’S JUST GOING TO BE MORE EXPENSIVE. FINANCIAL EXPERT KELLY BROTHERS SAYS THE FEDERAL RESERVE’S MOVE TO RAISE THE INTEREST RATE ANOTHER .75 IS HOW THE GOVERNMENT KEEPS INFLATION IN CHECK. THEY FEEL IT’S VERY IMPORTANT TO PULL INFLATION BACK IN, TO REIN IT IN, TO GET THAT UNDER CONTROL. AND THE ONLY REAL MEANS THEY HAVE OF DOING THAT IS RAISING INTEREST RATES AND SLOWING DOWN THE ECONOMY. THE HIGHER INTEREST RATE MEANS PAYING MORE FOR A NEW CAR. AT THE BEGINNING OF THE YEAR. THE AVERAGE INTEREST RATE ON A SIX MONTH NEW CAR LOAN. WAS 3.85%. WITH TODAY’S HIKE, THAT RATE COULD BE AS MUCH AS 5.75. REGULATORS KNOW THEY’LL HAVE TO STICK TO THEIR FAMILY BUDGET. WE HAVE TO BE A LITTLE BIT MORE SAVVY ON OUR SPENDING. THIS DEFINITELY IS GOING TO PLAY A BIG ROLE IN OUR SPENDING, MAKING THIS AND MAKING THIS TRANSITION FROM A CAR TO SUV, TAKING ON A NEW LOAN WITH A HIGHER INTEREST RATE. WELL, FAMILIES WILL FEEL THE PINCH. BROTHERS SAYS THIS WILL EVENTUALLY HELP THE ECONOMY AFTER THE PANDEMIC. WE’RE NOT PUSHING RATES UP ABNORMALLY. WE’RE RETURNING TO A MORE NORMAL RATE POSITION. WHAT WAS ABNORMAL WAS WHAT HAPPENED AFTER COVID, WHERE WE WENT DOWN TO ZERO. AND BORROWING BECAME CHEAPER. COST NOTHING. YEAH. AND BROTHER SAYS IF YOU DO HAVE CREDIT CARD DEBT, JUST TRY TO MAKE SOME BIGGER PAYMENTS INSTEAD OF JUST DOING THE MINIMUM PAYMENT. HE SAYS THOSE ANNUAL PERCENTAGE RATES ARE SURE TO GO UP. SOME MAY BE UP TO 19% ALREADY. REPORTING LIVE IN SACRAMENTO, MICHELLE, BONJOUR. KCRA 3 NEWS. YEAH. IMPORTANT NOW MORE THAN EVER TO GET THOSE CREDIT CARD DOWN THE PAYMENTS YOU NEED. WELL, FINANCIAL EXPERTS SAY THAT THERE IS AN UPSIDE TO THE HIKE IN INTEREST RATES HERE. SAVERS WHO KEEP THEIR MONEY IN THE BANK WILL SEE A BIT OF A

Friends of Tyre Nichols plan to hold a candlelight vigil in his honor on Monday at a Sacramento-area skate park.Regency Community Skatepark in North Natomas is a place where his childhood friends say they shared a lot of memories while growing up in Sacramento. "He was just such a genuine person and just such a good friend and to see that happen is, it's just very sad," said Nick Dragonetti, a friend who said he met Nichols at the skatepark when they were in middle school.Jerome Neal also met Nichols at the skatepark, about 13 years ago. "He was super sweet, super kind, very humble," Neal said. The friends did not talk as frequently after Nichols moved to Memphis, Tennessee, but Neal reached out when he visited Memphis last October."He linked up with me at the skatepark, and he and I just skated for half the day. We hung out like it was old times. Didn't miss a beat," Neal said.It was a little bit of time together that means a lot to him, especially now."That day was amazing, and now it keeps getting better due to the situation because I'll never have another one with him," Neal said. The 29-year-old FedEx worker and father died on Jan. 10 after he was beaten by police officers during a traffic stop."It was so unbelievable. Our Tyre, the guy we loved. The guy that brought us so much good energy is just gone, just like that," Neal said. The story has captured the nation's attention."A lot of skateboarders across the country feel for Tyre," Dragonetti said.On social media, professional skateboarder Tony Hawk shared a video of Nichols skating.Nichols often went to Regency Community Skatepark, where his friends plan to gather Monday night to remember him.Neal said he will be there even though he was originally supposed to spend the week in Phoenix."I'm just canceling half my trip here and going to Sacramento. Something in my heart is telling me I need to be there. Simple as that," he said.

Officials in Davis, California, have lifted an overnight shelter-in-place order after they were unable to find a suspect in a knife attack late Monday -- the third such incident following two fatal stabbings in less than a week near the campus of the University of California, Davis. The startling advice for students not to venture out following Monday's stabbing, which left a woman in critical condition. That attack was preceded by the killings Saturday evening of a UC Davis senior and Thursday of a 50-year-old man at different parks near campus. About 40,000 students are enrolled at the public university in Davis, a city of some 68,000 people about a 20-minute drive west of the state capital, Sacramento.Authorities in Davis, California are searching for a suspect after three people were stabbed in less than a week in the city. Two people died, and one woman is in critical condition in the incidents that have shaken the small university town. Video above: Witnesses say their friend was stabbed by Davis attackerThe city sent out an alert to residents around 12:30 a.m. on Tuesday calling for a shelter in place. That shelter-in-place has since been lifted but police have yet to find the suspect, whose description now matches the assailant in two of the recent stabbings. Here’s everything we know about the stabbings right now:Who was killed? On April 27, David Breaux was identified as the man who was stabbed to death in Davis’ Central Park. Breaux was a well-known community member and a positive presence around town, often referred to as the "Compassion Guy" for asking others about their definition of "compassion."A message from the Davis mayor, police chief and other city officials said that Breaux was a Stanford graduate who was "instrumental" in the addition of a "Compassion Bench" at the corner of 3rd and C Streets in 2013. Two days later, Karim Abou Najm, a 20-year-old UC Davis student, was stabbed and killed at Davis’ Sycamore Park while going home from an undergraduate awards ceremony. The student was studying computer science and was set to graduate in six weeks, according to his father, Majdi Abou Najm, who also said his son already had two jobs lined up for after graduation."We moved from Lebanon in 2018 when the situation in Lebanon was a little bit starting to go in not the right direction," Abou Najm said. "We came here hoping for safety." Who was hurt?A 64-year-old woman who has not been identified was stabbed the night of May 1 at a homeless encampment in Davis on 2nd and L streets. Video above: Chief of police at UC Davis speaks out on deadly stabbingsThe woman was found after a 911 call, and she told authorities she had been stabbed more than once through a tent. She was taken to a nearby hospital in critical condition and has undergone surgery. Witness Christine Barrios said that their friend was the woman who was stabbed and that the victim had thought at first that she had been punched.Where did the stabbings happen?Breaux was stabbed and killed at Davis’ Central Park. Najm was stabbed and killed at Davis’ Sycamore Park. The third person, an unidentified woman, was stabbed in the area of 2nd and L streets. Are the incidents related? Is this a serial killer?Police said it is possible the stabbings are connected. In at least two of the stabbings, a description of the suspect was similar. Do authorities have any leads on a suspect?Authorities are looking for a man with a light complexion, curly hair, 5 feet and 6 inches to 5 feet and 9 inches tall, and a thin build. He is believed to be wearing a black or blue sweatshirt, black Adidas pants with stripes and carrying a brown backpack.A similar description was issued for the suspect in the stabbing death of Abou Najm. Who is investigating the stabbings? The FBI has been called in to help with the investigation into stabbings."We're a small agency and we're working around the clock with the personnel that we have now. I have detectives sleeping under their desks for a couple of hours, staying away from their families," Dan Beckwith with Davis police said on Monday. Are there any increased safety protocols for UC Davis students? As an added precaution, the university said it is increasing escort availability for its Safe Ride program for students.Video above: UC Davis students concerned for safety following deadly stabbings Those rides from campus into the city will now be available from 8 p.m. to 3 a.m. daily, according to the university. Nearly six months after a California family and their dog died of extreme heat exhaustion and dehydration while hiking, phone data was released on Thursday that shows a text message and several phone calls did not go through due to poor cellphone reception.John Gerrish, his wife, Ellen Chung, their 1-year-old daughter, Miju, and their dog were walking in extreme heat in a remote area close to the Merced River in the Sierra National Forest last August before they died.Jonathan Gerrish's phone showed the family took multiple photos throughout their hike from 7:44 to 10:29 a.m., according to the release. At 12:25 p.m, they took a screenshot of their location on the trail map.A single text message at 11:56 a.m. saying, "Can you help us. On savage lundy trail heading back to Hites cove trail. No water or ver (over) heating with baby" did not go through due to not having cell service in the area, the release said. Five calls were also found to have been attempted but were not successful due to the same reason. The first was at 12:09 p.m. and the last four were attempted within one minute of each other at 12:36 p.m. They were found dead on Aug. 17 just 1.6 miles from their vehicle after a family friend reported them missing. In October, the cause of death for all three family members was determined to be hyperthermia and dehydration. Temperatures ranged from 107 to 109 degrees Fahrenheit and their water container was empty, authorities said. The details found on the phone support the findings of a heat-related incident, authorities said. "The cellphone data results were the last thing both the family and detectives were waiting on. The extracted information confirms our initial findings. I am very proud of my team and our partner agencies for all the work they put in. Their dedication has allowed us to close this case and answer lingering questions the family had, bringing them a little peace," Mariposa County Sheriff Jeremy Briese said.

Randy Waites never expected to find a family member by watching the local news. But that's exactly what happened one day in late December. The sighting happened during a newscast of sister station KCRA, in a story about snowfall in Lake Tahoe. A man named Eddie Waites was being interviewed, and Randy wondered if there might be a family connection. Randy's daughter, Cambria kicked off the search. "I saw features and he actually looked a lot like my Dad in the eyes. I did my research, searched up his name, looked up all I could," she said. It wasn't long before the two men shared their first phone call. "It just clicked, like we’ve been friends for 20 years," Randy said. "It's just unbelievable.""It was an instantaneous chill all the way from my head all the way down to my toes," Eddie said. "At first I thought, it’s not possible. Once I seen a picture of him, I seen my dad. I seen our dad. I knew it was real." The connection has allowed Randy Waites an opportunity not only to connect with his brother, but also learn more about their father. "I’ve never met my father, never saw a picture of him my entire life," Randy said. " has been texting me all kinds of different stuff, pictures of my grandfather, and filling in on the family history that I never had on that side."Eddie and Randy grew up within just 30 miles of one another. On Saturday, they met for the first time."This is almost an out-of-body experience," Eddie said. "The whole thing is surreal. To have not only a brother, but a family I never knew existed is beyond words. It's unbelievable."Both families greeted and embraced one another on Randy's front lawn in Lodi, California. The moment was markedly special also because it fell on Randy's son's 13th birthday. "It was crazy. I didn’t even know it was possible this could happen," said Dalton Waites. "My dad showed me a picture of his dad, and he looked exactly like me when I was little."KCRA asked the brothers what their plans were for the weekend."Spending as much time with this guy as possible," Eddie said. "Filling him in on all the gaps he’s had in his life, and the gaps I’ve had in my life, and filling in that void we both have. I think that’s the most incredible thing ever."

Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer will retire at the end of this session, according to sources. The 83-year-old has been a consistent liberal vote on the court. Now, President Joe Biden will have a chance to nominate his first Supreme Court Justice pick of his presidency.McGeorge School of Law Professor Leslie Jacobs joined Sacramento sister station KCRA to discuss one of Biden's top candidates from California – Justice Leondra Kruger. Biden is eyeing at least three judges for the expected vacancy, and each of them would fulfill his campaign pledge to nominate the first Black woman to the nation’s highest court, according to aides and allies.Kruger is currently a justice on the California Supreme Court. She is a graduate of Harvard and Yale’s law school and was previously a Supreme Court clerk. Kruger has argued a dozen cases before the justices as a lawyer for the federal government."She brings excellent qualifications; she has an excellent law school education; she has private law firm experience, government experience and now she has experience being a judge on the California Supreme Court," Jacobs said on Wednesday. "She has shown herself to be reasoned and deliberate in her opinions. Not wild or ideological." Jacobs said Kruger is comparable to Breyer because her rulings are practical."One thing is the stakes are not as high as they have been because the lineup on the court is set. So, that is not on the table. At the same time, we can expect there will be posturing and opposition, but the question would be 'Will there be such opposition that Republicans, for example, would try to stop this?' But they actually do not have the power to do so unless some Democratic senators were to defect," Jacobs said. California Gov. Gavin Newsom remarked on Breyer stepping down Wednesday. The San Francisco native "has brought core California values to our nation’s highest court throughout his distinguished tenure, shaping impactful decisions to strengthen our democracy and change lives for the better," Newsom said. Justice Breyer will retire at the end of the summer, according to two sources who confirmed the news to The Associated Press on Wednesday. The Senate can confirm a successor before there is a formal vacancy, so the White House was getting to work and it was expected to take at least a few weeks before a nomination was formalized.Other successors Biden is considering include U.S. Circuit Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson, and U.S. District Judge J. Michelle Childs. The Associated Press contributed to this report.

A clinic in Sacramento, California, said it's seeing an uptick in people getting their COVID-19 vaccine as we approach the holidays.James Broderick is one of those people who stopped by Urgent Care Now. He was getting his booster shot. "We're just looking forward to the holidays," Broderick said. "The last couple years have just been real rough on everybody and particularly those of us who have big families."Federal health officials announced Monday that omicron is now the dominant version of the coronavirus in the U.S., accounting for 73% of new infections last week. And experts expect a surge of new cases following family gatherings during the holidays. "We'll probably see almost twice as many cases towards the end of January as we're seeing today," said Dr. Dean Blumberg, who specializes in pediatric infectious diseases at UC Davis Health. "So, we're already going to get that increase, and omicron will just make that worse. Blumberg also explained that with a more contagious variant, there will likely be more breakthrough infections."The early reports suggest we're seeing more breakthrough infections with omicron, that it's somewhere between two and five times more transmissible than delta, and that's why we are seeing more cases," Dr. Blumberg said. However, he said, the purpose of the vaccine is not to prevent infection entirely but rather to prevent severe infection. Dr. Blumberg said early data shows people with their booster shots had about 70% protection against hospitalization with the omicron variant."Vaccination is still the No. 1 way to protect against infection, including omicron, and masking is a close second," Dr. Blumberg said. A bar owner was arrested in connection with selling fraudulent COVID-19 vaccination cards, the California Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control said Tuesday.Luke Blehm, a spokesperson with ABC, told sister station KCRA the agency launched an undercover operation after receiving complaints that fake vaccine cards were being made at The Old Corner Saloon in Clements. Agents succeeded in purchasing several of these cards from the owner and a bartender in April. At least eight sales to customers were made at the bar at around $20 a card, Blehm said. Finished and unfinished vaccine cards were found during the undercover investigation, along with paper cutters and laminators.Blehm said bar owner Todd Anderson is facing charges of falsifying medical records with forging public seals, along with several counts of identity theft."Falsifying medical documents and also on the cards there are several agency seals on them, and that is illegal to falsify a seal of an agency or an entity, which makes that identify theft. And also there's a section — forgery section — with forging a seal," Blehm said.A Tuesday search of the saloon by ABC agents also turned up an unregistered handgun, Blehm said. ABC will also seek a criminal complaint against another employee from the saloon.Watch the video above to learn more about this story.
