Every year the National Recording Archives adds 25 recordings to be saved for posterity. The National Recording Archive has featured everything from presidential speeches to historic moments to the very first audio recording. This year there is another diverse list, including some you might have thought had been in there for years. The 1999 single that made a former singer from Menudo a star – Living la Vida Loca by Ricky Martin – has been cited as a way other artists from Shakira to Paulina Rubio made the jump to mainstream. It joins the list this year. For every small town girl living in a lonely world... the Bay Area band founded by former members of Santana – Journey – just now made it into the archive with "Don't Stop Believing." The song is so iconic the show "The Sopranos" chose it to end their run on TV. Interestingly enough, the phrase "don't stop believing" doesn't even show up until more than three minutes into the song. One of the most historic moments in baseball – when Hank Aaron broke Babe Ruth's all-time home run record – is in there from the radio call of his historic moment. With bright red hair, an audacious blues attitude, and a bottleneck guitar, Bonnie Raitt's album "Nick of Time" was called one of the thousand and one albums you must hear before you die by Billboard Magazine. That's one reason it was added to the 2022 list.Speaking of guitar greats, when guitarist Ry Cooder and Producer Nick Gold went to Havana, Cuba, to record an all-star ensemble of musicians who paved the way for Cuban rhythms, they adopted the name the "Buena Vista Social Club." It's a name taken from a popular club in Havana where most of they had played. The documentary is in the US Film Archive, the registry felt it was only fitting to add the soundtrack. The attacks on Washington, D.C., New York and Pennsylvania on Sept. 11, 2001, are in with the public radio broadcasts by WNYC in New York. The groundbreaking group The Wu Tang Clan, whose members would go on to create a myriad of record labels, influence multiple generations of artists and become a force in the hip hop world, get in with their album "Enter the Wu Tang Clan."One you might wonder "why wasn't this in here before?" It's a tune where you've all sung along in the car and tried to do the Fandango...Queen's epic musical journey "Bohemian Rhapsody" gets its due this year as well. The entire list of recordings is below:“Harlem Strut” — James P. Johnson (1921)Franklin D. Roosevelt: Complete Presidential Speeches (1933-1945)“Walking the Floor Over You” — Ernest Tubb (1941) (single)“On a Note of Triumph” (May 8, 1945)“Jesus Gave Me Water” — The Soul Stirrers (1950) (single)“Ellington at Newport” — Duke Ellington (1956) (album)“We Insist! The Chimayó village in northern New Mexico may be small, but its influence is anything but.Every year during Holy Week, an average of 300,000 people make their way to El Sanctuario de Chimayó. The church is known to have healing properties and bring blessings to those that seek them."It was always just to get back to God," Nina Steffen, from Rio Rancho, said. The annual tradition involves a pilgrimage to the small Catholic church from people around the world. The event was canceled in 2020 and 2021 due to the coronavirus pandemic and health concerns."It feels good. We need to see the people walking again. It was so sad for two whole years. It was really, like depressing not to see any of the people walking," Sylvia Montoya, an early trekker, said.Montoya added the pilgrimage is an annual tradition for her family.Despite driving this year, she said she made the walk several years ago, along with her mother, sister, and brother."My mom did it two years ago, and she did it from Galisteo," Montoya said. "Her and my sister and my brother."A similar experience for Steffen. She said she's been visiting the holy sanctuary for the past 22 years, joined by a group of local military moms."What really started it was our sons. I'm a group of Blue Star Moms that have sons and daughters in the military," Steffen said. "We've just done it every year to ask God to protect our kids."Steffen added she often spends her time praying for her son, Howard. He's currently stationed in Jerusalem."I got my dirt from the hole. I got the holy water," Steffen said. "They talk about God's country. This is the ultimate God's country, right here. It's just so peaceful."Some people, like Nicole Guzman, started their trek a day before Good Friday, in order to beat the crowds."This is the first time in like the past three years that I have done it. I would normally do it every year," she said.Guzman started around 11 a.m. in Truchas, an almost three-hour walking journey to Chimayó.Like many, she embarks on the journey for a special reason. From praying for good health to fulfilling religious promises."A lot of people pray. A lot of people meditate. We met a lady back there that was meditating on her way this way carrying the cross," Guzman said. "This year, I kind of just did it for my family. I have my stepmother's mom, that was really sick. And in the process, we found out that she had passed, so this was for her more than anything."Despite her personal loss, Guzman continued to walk on.Not just for her own family, but for others in need of prayer and guidance."I know a lot of us carry a lot of burdens, and this gives us time to meditate and to think about it. At the end of the day, God has us and he's going to push us the rest of the way," Guzman said. The pilgrimage dates back hundreds of years.El Sanctuario de Chimayó is one of the most-visited holy sites in the United States. The sanctuary sees the most visitors during Holy Week but is open year-round.

This is the story about a story. Two stories, in fact.A month before the lights, the glitz and the pageantry of the 2020 Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree lighting in New York, the 75-foot tall spruce tree had to be cut down in upstate New York.Along for the ride, as the tree was transported from the woods to the big city, in his little nest, was a Saw-Whet owl. The poor guy hadn't had food or water for three days. The man driving the truck had noticed him in the tree, got a box, and put him inside. The owl was eventually taken to the Ravensbeard Wildlife Center in Saugerties, New York. They dubbed the little guy "Rockefeller," for obvious reasons. That being a long name, they called him "Rocky" for short. "I read the article and started thinking, wow, that would be a great children's book," said Kim Dwyer, a clinical psychologist in Denver, Colorado. "I had lots of other pots on the fire in my professional life, walked away from it, and like the idea just kept coming back. And I think, you know, I also felt, you know, so timely, like, I felt this, this like it, write this, write this now write this book now and get your thoughts out while they're fresh."Her thoughts turned to Rocky's journey, translated to human feelings. A Saw-Whet owl doesn't have the low-pitched kind of "hoot" you might think of. It's more like a higher-pitched, as Dwyer writes it, "toot." Not dissimilar from the whine of a saw being sharpened. The feelings and sounds were put into her first-ever Christmas book, Rocky's Christmas Journey."There's something there that's emotional," Dwyer said. "And I'm using that as an opportunity to, to talk as basic as like, how are people feeling right now? How do you think you know, the main character, how's Rocky feeling when he finds himself in this tree in the middle of a city, and he's so far away from, you know, where he grew up, or where he decided to build his nest?"In the end, though, her hope is that parents will help kids realize that they can see themselves in Rocky as well."I mean, if you think about it, we could take that story of Rocky, and we could substitute a four-year-old and you're going off to school, and I can remember being that age, and you know, I wasn't particularly thrilled to be going off to school, and a lot of kids feel that way," Dwyer said. It's more of a fictional account, but one she hopes will connect with kids.Dwyer isn't alone, the folks at the Ravensbeard Wildlife Center have written their own book for kids. Theirs is a little less fictional, but the same journey. They also sell tree ornaments, clothes, cups and more with Rocky's image on them. Dwyer's book is available at retail stores and online. The real Rocky, by the way, had a happy ending too, just like the Rocky in Dwyer's book —found and set free. Rocky's came with some help from the Ravensbeard Wildlife Center.
