A staff member at a Boston university is being treated for minor injuries after a package delivered to the campus detonated while they were opening it.A spokesperson for Northeastern University said the explosion happened shortly after 7 p.m. at Holmes Hall. No students were injured. The Boston Police Department's Bomb Squad responded to the scene to investigate the incident, according to the spokesperson. Responding police officers and Boston Emergency Medical Services personnel found the staff member, a 45-year-old man, suffering from minor hand injuries. That man was transported to an area hospital for treatment."I take very seriously that this city is home to everyone's young people, from our littlest learners up to our college students and university staff," said Boston Mayor Michelle Wu. "So we want to make sure we emphasize that this is of the utmost priority: the safety and well-being of all of our young people here."A search revealed a second similar package that was ultimately rendered safe by the Boston Police Department's bomb squad.Cox said the Boston Police Department is working with its law enforcement partners at Boston Regional Intelligence, the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF)."We are going to be working and continue to work with all our campus security partners, as well, to make sure all the students here are safe — as well as the rest of the residents in the city," the commissioner said. The FBI's Boston Division confirmed that it is offering its full support to its partners, especially Boston police, including the full resources of the Joint Terrorism Task Force, evidence response team and special agent bomb technicians."We're fully integrated with our partners and remain committed to resolving the incident safely," said FBI Boston Assistant Special Agent in Charge Jason Cromartie.Sister station WCVB reporter Mike Beaudet said he was teaching a journalism class at Northeastern University at the time. He said his class was moved outside but that neither he nor any of his students heard any explosions."I didn't hear any explosions. I don't think any of the other students did," Dicorpo said. "But we heard the fire alarm and so we assumed we should leave.""It's pretty late at night. Our class was an exception. Most students are home for the day. There's not a lot of classes going on," Maize said.At about 10 p.m., NewsCenter 5's Nathalie Pozo received an alert from the university stating that the scene at Holmes Hall was contained and the campus was secured and that Northeastern police were working closely with Boston police to secure the area."It's very important to note that our campus is secure and we will maintain a secure campus in perpetuity," said Northeastern University police Chief Michael Davis. "That's our work and that's what we continue to do, and we'll be working with our partners here to get this resolved."

A woman who was pulled from a house fire in California Sunday morning has died, family told sister station KCRA 3 on Monday. She is credited by the family as the reason they were able to escape. The house fire was sparked by an artificial Christmas tree around 2 a.m. Sunday. Investigators said an electrical short from the Christmas tree caused the fire, and the home did not have working smoke detectors.Family identified the woman as 22-year-old Destiny Abdrazack.Neighbors said they woke up to a loud sound and looked out the window. "You could see the flickering light on the tree and that's kind of like the telltale sign of a fire," Richard Byers said.He and his wife Brandy Byers ran three doors down and saw Abdrazack's family outside."They were screaming, 'Destiny! There's someone inside! There's someone inside!' There's nothing any of us could do," Brandy said.Richard said he couldn't just stand there and watch the house burn. He grabbed a fire extinguisher while another neighbor used a garden hose. He said a family member was motioning to the front window. "That's where I aimed my fire extinguisher, but the fire just came right back," Richard said. "It was too intense, moving too fast."Ernest Isom, his wife, their son and his fiance and two other adults had fallen asleep celebrating Christmas Eve."Unfortunately, they wanted to keep the lights on until the last minute and we all happen to fall asleep and we had an instant, seconds to get out," Isom said. "It was fast, and that's how quick it went. I'm talking minutes."The family lost everything, including two dogs. But Isom calls Abdrazack — she was his future daughter-in-law — a hero for her quick actions."Unfortunately, she was the one who yelled fire, and that's the sad part. She saved our lives," Isom said.Loved ones have started a fundraiser for the family impacted by the fire.Fire officials encourage people to check their batteries and make sure they are working. After the Bengals AFC Championship Game win, everyone was wondering if C.J. Uzomah would be playing in the Super Bowl following his knee injury. Bengals head coach Zac Taylor said that Uzomah is on track to play in the Super Bowl on Sunday and that’s also the case for every other player on the active roster.Uzomah sprained his MCL during the AFC Championship Game and was unable to practice until Thursday this week. According to the Bengals injury report, Uzomah was a full participant in practice on Friday, but is still listed as questionable. Guard Jackson Carman was the only other Bengals player to have anything less than full practice participation this week. He was limited Wednesday before going full the last two days, but Zac Taylor has not said whether he or Hakeem Adenjii will be starting at right guard on Sunday.Defensive end Cam Sample, defensive tackle Josh Tupou and wide receiver Stanley Morgan were on the list this week. All three players are considered healthy enough to play this weekend.Something notable to point out is that if the Bengals don't call up a tight end from the practice squad, then it's most certain that C.J. Uzomah will be playing in the big game on Sunday.

<p>Defensive end Cam Sample, defensive tackle Josh Tupou and wide receiver Stanley Morgan were on the list this week.</p>
<p>All three players are considered healthy enough to play this weekend.</p>
<p>Something notable to point out is that if the Bengals don't call up a tight end from the practice squad, then it's most certain that C.J. Uzomah will be playing in the big game on Sunday.</p>

In an exclusive interview with Golf Digest, Tiger Woods spoke publicly about his golfing future for the first time since his car crash earlier this year."I think something that is realistic is playing the tour one day, never full time, ever again, but pick and choose, just like Mr. (Ben) Hogan did," Woods told interviewer Henni Koyack."Pick and choose a few events a year and you play around that. You practice around that, and you gear yourself up for that. And you play. I think that's how I'm going to have to play it from now on."It's an unfortunate reality, but it's my reality. And I understand it, and I accept it."Woods began the remote interview from his South Florida home by walking into the room with what he called a slight "hitch" in his stride, evidence of the serious leg injuries suffered in a car crash near Los Angeles in February.Woods says during his grueling rehabilitation, things as simple as watching his son play or listening to birds sing have taken on greater meaning."I have so far to go ... I'm not even at the halfway point. I have so much more muscle development and nerve development that I have to do in my leg. At the same time, as you know, I've had five back operations. So I'm having to deal with that. So as the leg gets stronger, sometimes the back may act up ... It's a tough road."I'm just happy to be able to go out there and watch Charlie play, or go in the backyard and have an hour or two by myself with no one talking, no music, no nothing. I just hear the birds chirping. That part I've sorely missed."Woods will be in attendance at the Hero World Challenge in the Bahamas this week. The 20-man tournament benefits Woods' foundation.

<p>TUCSON, Ariz. (<a class="Link" href="https://www.kgun9.com/news/local-news/high-schoolers-help-local-77-year-old-in-hospice-decorate-for-christmas">KGUN</a>) — Christmas came early for a 77-year-old woman in Tucson when a group of high school students made her one wish come true.</p>
<p>Christmas is Nancy Mattern’s favorite holiday.</p>
<p>“It just brings out the part of people that you don’t see the rest of the year,” she said.</p>
<p>She’s been collecting Christmas decorations for 40 years. But ever since she got COVID, she hasn't been able to put them up.</p>
<p>“It put me in this position, it affected my heart and my lungs," Mattern said. "And to be able to do the little things now is really hard.”</p>
<p>Nancy’s daughter, Trina Mattern, has a work injury that also makes it difficult to decorate.</p>
<p>“It's been very heartbreaking to see her so sad during the holidays because we couldn’t put up any decorations for her,” Trina Mattern said.</p>
<p>This year, eight of Santa’s helpers wanted to change that. They’re all a part of University High School’s Dreamcatchers. The group grants wishes for patients in hospice care.</p>
<p>“Working together to create each dream has been a really special experience to me,” said Kristin Jung, a Dreamcatcher at University High School.</p>
<p>The group put up all of Mattern's indoor and outdoor decorations.</p>
<p>“It's what Christmas is about, it's about giving," she said. "And to be able to have my Christmas decorations up is something I thought was over and done with, but these kids, with their big hearts, are making it happen.”</p>

With his laces tied tightly, Randy Bowling said he's ready to walk to work if he has to.The nearly four-mile trek each way — from his apartment in Hamilton to Walmart in Fairfield Township — isn't ideal for the 50-year-old, who is also disabled. Bowling suffered a traumatic brain injury when he was 16.That's one of the reasons he bought a $157 bicycle a few months ago."It's the first bike I ever bought myself," Bowling said. He was proud of it. Now, it's gone.It was stolen from outside Party Mart Express in Hamilton Saturday night.Store security video shows Bowling walking his bike close to the front doors after his shift at Walmart. He's in the East Avenue store for less than a minute before a man rides up on another bike, grabs Bowling's bicycle and rides off with it.Bowling walks out in disbelief."He's made my life harder," Bowling said. Bowling lives alone at the Serve City apartments. He said he needs his job to pay bills, and the bus isn't always an option."When we had heard, it just broke our hearts. Our residents struggle with so many other life issues, to have something like this happen is a real challenge," said David Hood, executive director of Serve City. Neighbor Brenda Stevens called what happened unacceptable in her neighborhood."It's just aggravating. I don't know why people do it. It's selfish," Stevens said.Other neighbors have expressed frustration and support."There's a lot of people that care. If I had a bike, I'd give it to him," said neighbor Andrew Yeager. Bowling said even though he should be angry, he'd rather talk to the guy who snatched his bike and help him get a job.

A Madeira sixth-grader, recently diagnosed with cancer, is learning a lesson in the power of community.Ella Ellison is 11 years old. She was diagnosed with pediatric osteosarcoma, a rare bone cancer, last week. One week prior, her family had no idea she was sick. "I had a healthy child as far as I knew two weeks ago. She was as healthy as could be," said Caroline Ellison, Ella's mother. "Her daughter was at the skating rink with friends two Fridays ago when she was injured and thought she may have broken her arm."She was sitting in a booth, and one of her friends bumped her out of the booth being funny, but little did he know, he probably saved her life," she said. "What we thought was just going to be a fractured arm and maybe a cast turned into, 'Oh my goodness, we see a tumor. We think your daughter has cancer and the oncologist is on his way to talk to you.'"The girl's mother said the last two weeks have been heartbreaking and devastating but her daughter remains strong and brave. "She knows there's one way to get through it and it's head on," Caroline Ellison said. <p>A Madeira sixth-grader, recently diagnosed with cancer, is learning a lesson in the power of community.</p>
<p>Ella Ellison is 11 years old. She was diagnosed with pediatric osteosarcoma, a rare bone cancer, last week. One week prior, her family had no idea she was sick. </p>
<p>"I had a healthy child as far as I knew two weeks ago. She was as healthy as could be," said Caroline Ellison, Ella's mother. "</p>
<p>Her daughter was at the skating rink with friends two Fridays ago when she was injured and thought she may have broken her arm.</p>
<p>"She was sitting in a booth, and one of her friends bumped her out of the booth being funny, but little did he know, he probably saved her life," she said. "What we thought was just going to be a fractured arm and maybe a cast turned into, 'Oh my goodness, we see a tumor. We think your daughter has cancer and the oncologist is on his way to talk to you.'"</p>
<p>The girl's mother said the last two weeks have been heartbreaking and devastating but her daughter remains strong and brave. </p>
<p>"She knows there's one way to get through it and it's head on," Caroline Ellison said. "Pray for strength and bravery and to keep her fierce and feisty."</p>

<p>FORT COLLINS, Colo. — People are back outside and they’re enjoying it</p>
<p>“Today, in particular, a lot of the wildflowers have bloomed and it’s a little bit cooler today,” said Dave Kazmirski, a hiker out on a trail. “It just feels good to get out in the fresh air."</p>
<p>As COVID-19 restrictions are easing, people are spending more time outdoors. Last year, 237 million people visited national parks. That’s a big number, but it’s more than 90 million fewer people than visited in 2019.</p>
<p>2021 is already outpacing 2019 at parks like Yellowstone, where visits are up 14%.</p>
<p>That uptick has some preparing for more accidents when people are outside.</p>
<p>“We expect just more volume of people outside this year than were last year, and accidents happen,” said Theron Risinger. </p>
<p>Risinger runs the Banner Health emergency department in Greeley, Colorado.</p>
<p>“Lots of crazy stuff that we always see in the ER,” he said. “Helmets are really important, ATVs are really dangerous, especially like three-wheelers, and boat propellers and lawnmowers, you have to be really careful around both of those things.”</p>
<p>Risinger and his staff are bracing for more injuries this summer as more and more people start traveling and returning to the outdoors. But he hopes people will use their best judgment to stay safe.</p>
<p>“You’re on a bike, on a skateboard, you know, having your helmet on. If you’re out hiking, it’s making sure you have water and sunscreen, and someone knows where you are. If you’re boating, make sure you have a life jacket on. If you’re operating any machinery, making sure you’re not intoxicated,” Risinger said. </p>
<p>According to the National Safety Council, biking, exercising equipment, and ATVs cause the most injuries in the US.</p>
<p>But hikers on the trails are hoping for a safer summer.</p>
<p>“Everybody that we’ve seen around here seems pretty safe,” said Kazmirski.</p>
<p>“I think people just use common sense, just as you would previously. I don’t think there’s a difference now,” said Stefani Piotrowksi, another hiker. </p>
<p>But if you haven’t been as active during the pandemic, make sure you ease back into your usual activities.</p>
<p>“Certainly, if you were really out of shape, you know, making sure you go into it slowly, that you kind of walk before you run and kind of get back into shape,” said Risinger.</p>
<p>Risinger says his department isn’t necessarily expecting more heart attacks or injuries due to fatigue, but they are ready for it.</p>
<p>So, get back outside and enjoy the summer, but use common sense and try not to push it too hard your first couple of times back on a dusty trail.</p>

Tiger Woods has given his first interview since he was involved in a massive car crash in February, discussing his rehab and physical therapy with Golf Digest. The golfing legend was seriously injured after the Genesis SUV he was driving veered off the road about 26 miles southwest of downtown Los Angeles around 7 a.m. on Feb. 23. Woods suffered serious leg injuries as a result of the accident and is currently in rehab."I understand more of the rehab processes because of my past injuries, but this was more painful than anything I have ever experienced," he told Golf Digest.Woods did not comment when asked about his hopes of playing golf again."My physical therapy has been keeping me busy. I do my routines every day and am focused on my No. 1 goal right now: walking on my own. Taking it one step at a time," he told Golf Digest. The 45-year-old golfer had been rushed to Harbor-UCLA Medical Center after the high-speed rollover crash. Woods suffered comminuted open fractures that affected his right tibia and fibula, which are the two long bones directly under the knee. After the crash, investigators said there was no reason to believe Woods had been operating the vehicle while impaired by alcohol or drugs but rather crashed while driving at an "unsafe speed for road conditions," according to a police report. The 22-page crash scene investigation report by the California Highway Patrol further stated that Woods was "acting in a manner consistent with someone suffering from shock due to having been involved in a major traffic collision," after the incident.Woods' right leg "suffered traumatic injuries" and what's "still unclear is whether additional procedures will be necessary, or if Woods can expect to regain full mobility and strength in his leg," according to Golf Digest.
