A collision between a double-decker bus and a city bus in Manhattan on Thursday left dozens injured and at least 18 people requiring hospitalization for non-life-threatening injuries, according to the New York City Fire Department.

First responders received notice of the crash on the borough’s east side shortly after 7 p.m. Thursday, said FDNY Deputy Chief Kevin Murphy.

“The first two units arrived to find two buses involved in what appeared to be a serious accident, complicated by the fact that one of them was a double-decker bus,” Murphy said at a news conference at the scene.

Ropes and ladders were used to assist passengers with getting off the buses, officials said.

“Any time you have two buses involved you have a significant number of patients that likely need to be treated,” Murphy said. “So seeing that quantity of people right away, I think the units did a very good job getting them off the bus quickly and taken to the appropriate resources.”

Eighteen patients were transported to area hospitals but none have life-threatening injuries, the fire department said.

“Many injuries are just cuts, bruises, scrapes, some suspected fractures. Some head and neck injuries as well,” said EMS Deputy Chief Paul Hopper. “We’re all quite fortunate it was not much worse.”

Another 63 people were needing assessment from a fire department doctor, Hopper said, adding, “We expect that they will refuse medical attention and be seen by our doctor who is on the scene and on the bus evaluating patients.”

It is not yet clear what caused the crash, fire officials say.

A spokesperson for the Metropolitan Transportation Authority said there was a crash at 7:17 p.m. on bus route X27 and referred CNN to the fire department for further details. Police referred CNN to the fire department when asked for comment.

Pickleball is the fastest-growing sport in America, but as more people step onto the court, many players also have to step into the doctor's office.

Valley doctors say the issue is two-fold: more people playing naturally leads to more injuries, and while more young people have picked up a paddle, most pickleball players are seniors.

"More folks who are older, maybe they were tennis players, but now because of arthritis and other problems, you have less amount of court to cover with pickleball," said ABC15 Health Insider Dr. Shad Marvasti.

He says older players mean bodies that are more prone to injury. Ankle sprains are among the most common injuries.

"The sudden movements, you're going to one side then pivot suddenly and can twist your ankle," said Dr. Marvasti.

Over-worked shoulders, rotator cuffs, and wrist fractures are common.

"Lose your balance, then fall on your outstretched hand and break it," he said.

Foot problems such as plantar fasciitis can also develop in athletes who've been on the court for a few years.

Dr. Marvasti says prevention is pretty straightforward: lots of stretching before you play.

The doctor suggests stretching your arms across your body, bending down to stretch your hamstrings and calves, and tracing the ABCs with your heel.

He also advises using sports bandages to pre-wrap any area with known injuries like knees or ankles.

CHESAPEAKE, Va. —

Multiple people are dead and others are wounded after a shooting at a Virginia Walmart on Tuesday night, police said.

Officers responded to a report of a shooting at the Walmart on Sam's Circle around 10:15 p.m. and as soon as they arrived they found evidence of a shooting, Chesapeake police spokesman Leo Kosinski said in a briefing.

Over 35 to 40 minutes, officers found multiple dead people and injured people in the store and put rescue and tactical teams together to go inside and provide life-saving measures, he said.

Police believe there was one shooter, who is dead, he said. They believe that the shooting had stopped when police arrived, Kosinski said. He did not have a number of dead, but said it was "less than 10, right now."

The Virginia shooting comes three days after a gunman opened fire at a gay nightclub in Colorado, killing five people and wounding 17. That shooter was arrested after patrons at the club tackled him and beat him. The shootings come in a year when the country was shaken by the deaths of 21 in a school shooting in Uvalde, Texas.

Tuesday's shooting also brought back memories of another shooting at a Walmart in 2019, when a gunman police say was targeting Mexicans opened fire at a store in El Paso and killed 22 people. Walmart didn't have a security guard on duty that day.

Chesapeake police tweeted that a family reunification site has been set up at the Chesapeake Conference Center. This site is only for immediate family members or the emergency contact of those who may have been in the building, the tweet said.

Chesapeake is about 7 miles (11 kilometers) south of Norfolk.

COVINGTON, Ky. —

Road rage over a parking spot led to a woman shot in the chest on Sunday night, according to Covington police.

Investigators said the woman had serious injuries and was transported to UC Medical Center.

They also told WLWT she was not in critical condition when we asked for more information about how she was doing.

Meanwhile, a neighbor talked with us about what happened and shared surveillance video that captured the sound of the gunshots.

"It doesn't happen down here. It's pretty quiet down here for the most part but this is the most craziest that we've dealt with around here," neighbor Chad Wagner said.

In five years living in the neighborhood, Wagner said he has never heard anything like what his cameras captured.

His security system recorded the sound of the gunshots echoing in the 2400 block of Herman Street.

Covington police said a woman was shot in the chest after an apparent road rage incident over a parking space.

"It's sad. Sad. People don't care. They just don't care. They think in the moment right then and there and then have to deal with the consequences later," Wagner said.

Wagner told WLWT he saw what he thought were the woman's loved ones rushing to the scene worried and upset.

He and other neighbors can't believe a scene like this unfolded here.

Covington police immediately had one suspect detained, according to an investigator.

Now, they're working to figure out what happened.

Investigators said they are interviewing several people at police headquarters.

Meanwhile, neighbors are feeling pretty shaken up.

"I'm ready to move. That was the straw that broke the camel's back. I mean we've dealt with drugs and stuff, but this is, this is the straw that broke the camel's back for sure," Wagner said.

Covington police said they are still looking for at least one other suspect in this incident.

A man is dead and at least five people were injured after a bee swarm attack in an Arizona neighborhood on Thursday.

The man, whose identity has not been released, died after he was among three people "believed to have been stung hundreds of times" by the bee swarm in Marana, the Northwest Fire District said on Facebook.

The two other people needed medical attention. The swarm forced a residential street to be shut down for several hours in the town northwest of Tucson.

Three responding firefighters, including one who was hospitalized and later released, also were stung.

Workers discovered an open beehive in a nearby tree. They estimated it weighed about 100 pounds, according to the Northwest Fire District.

"Bee handlers have killed most of the bees and have removed the hive," Marana Police Department said on Facebook. "Although the area is much safer, there are still some lingering bees."

Police warned residents in the neighborhood to remain cautious.

FORT COLLINS, Colo. — People are back outside and they’re enjoying it

“Today, in particular, a lot of the wildflowers have bloomed and it’s a little bit cooler today,” said Dave Kazmirski, a hiker out on a trail. “It just feels good to get out in the fresh air."

As COVID-19 restrictions are easing, people are spending more time outdoors. Last year, 237 million people visited national parks. That’s a big number, but it’s more than 90 million fewer people than visited in 2019.

2021 is already outpacing 2019 at parks like Yellowstone, where visits are up 14%.

That uptick has some preparing for more accidents when people are outside.

“We expect just more volume of people outside this year than were last year, and accidents happen,” said Theron Risinger.

Risinger runs the Banner Health emergency department in Greeley, Colorado.

“Lots of crazy stuff that we always see in the ER,” he said. “Helmets are really important, ATVs are really dangerous, especially like three-wheelers, and boat propellers and lawnmowers, you have to be really careful around both of those things.”

Risinger and his staff are bracing for more injuries this summer as more and more people start traveling and returning to the outdoors. But he hopes people will use their best judgment to stay safe.

“You’re on a bike, on a skateboard, you know, having your helmet on. If you’re out hiking, it’s making sure you have water and sunscreen, and someone knows where you are. If you’re boating, make sure you have a life jacket on. If you’re operating any machinery, making sure you’re not intoxicated,” Risinger said.

According to the National Safety Council, biking, exercising equipment, and ATVs cause the most injuries in the US.

But hikers on the trails are hoping for a safer summer.

“Everybody that we’ve seen around here seems pretty safe,” said Kazmirski.

“I think people just use common sense, just as you would previously. I don’t think there’s a difference now,” said Stefani Piotrowksi, another hiker.

But if you haven’t been as active during the pandemic, make sure you ease back into your usual activities.

“Certainly, if you were really out of shape, you know, making sure you go into it slowly, that you kind of walk before you run and kind of get back into shape,” said Risinger.

Risinger says his department isn’t necessarily expecting more heart attacks or injuries due to fatigue, but they are ready for it.

So, get back outside and enjoy the summer, but use common sense and try not to push it too hard your first couple of times back on a dusty trail.

SAN JOSE, Calif. —

A shooting at a public transit control center in San Jose, California, Wednesday morning left multiple casualties and fatalities, Deputy Russell Davis of the Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office said.

The suspect is dead, he said. Employees of the Valley Transportation Authority were among the victims, and the extent of the victims' injuries was not immediately clear, Davis said.

The shooting occurred at about 6:34 a.m. PT at a VTA control center, which Davis described as a hub that stores multiple VTA trains and a maintenance yard. The VTA said its employees have evacuated and that service was not impacted.

The VTA is a public transit service that operates bus and light rail services in the Santa Clara Valley and employs about 2,000 workers.

Overhead video of the VTA rail yard from CNN affiliate KGO showed a large law enforcement presence on the scene as well as several ambulances. The first responders on the scene did not appear to be acting urgently as of 8 a.m. PT.

Agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) responded to the scene, and California Gov. Gavin Newsom said he was monitoring the situation.

San Jose Mayor Sam Liccardo said earlier Wednesday in a tweet that "the shooter is no longer a threat" and the facility had been evacuated.

He said the shooting "has left several people being treated, but the situation is still being assessed."

“Our hearts are pained for the families of those we have lost in this horrific shooting,” Liccardo said on Twitter.

Gov. Gavin Newsom said in a tweet that his office was “in close contact with local law enforcement and monitoring this situation closely.”

MADISON TOWNSHIP, Ohio — Several people were injured in Madison Township, Butler County after a deck collapsed with 25 to 30 people on it during a party, according to the Madison Twp. Fire Department on social media.

At 6:29 p.m., the fire department was called to a home in the 6800 block of April Circle on a report of a structure collapse, with multiple victims reported, according to Butler County dispatch records.

On arrival, the department said they found a large deck at the back of the house had collapsed with dozens of people on it, leading to multiple injuries.

Emergency crews transported four people to Atrium Medical Center, and a few more with minor injuries were taken to area hospitals by private vehicles.

The Madison Twp. Fire Department thanked the Wayne Township, Middletown and Trenton fire departments for their help at the collapse.
